The INTERNATIONAL INTERNET LEATHERCRAFTERS' GUILD presents Leather Fiesta 45TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE & TRADE SHOW Albuquerque, New Mexico - October 13-16, 2011 Workshop Class Schedule Wednesday, October 12, 2011 (Pre-Conference Classes) Sheridan Style Photo Album – Day 1 of 3 Instructor: Chan Geer Cost: $200 for all days Class Size: 12 max. Location: Salon G 8am-5pm In this three-day class we will make a mid-sized photo album with Sheridan-style tooling on the front, basket stamp design on the back, and laced all the way around. Materials to bring: Sheridan-style tools, your choice of basket stamp tool, a mall, and tooling surface. Leather, lace, tooling pattern. Instructions will be provided. How to Make a Sheridan-Style Shoulder Bag – Day 1 of 3 Instructor: Akiko Okada Class Size: 15 max. Cost: $200 for all days Location: Salon H 8am-5pm How to Make a Holster – Day 1 of 2 Instructor: Alex Madson Cost: $95 for both days 8am-5pm In this three-day class Akiko will be teaching how to make a Shoulder bag with Sheridan Style tooling. Students need to bring a tooling surface and Sheridan-style tools. Class Size: 12 max. Location: Salon I In this two-day class we will learn how to make a floral tooled paddle back holster for a Government model 1911 pistol. Materials to bring: set of checkered bevels B936, B198, B701, B702 or similar, unless you prefer smooth bevels; Lined shader P981 or P209 or similar P212 checkered or P208 smooth; Flower Center 566 or J820 or about 1/2" diameter flower center; Stop H907 or similar; Veiner V920 or similar; Background A104, A104-2 or your choice; Optional F902, F976, or F941; Hair blade, or B199, or B893, or B894 for drag tool; Mallet or maul and a stone. Stitching groover, #5 overstitch wheel, Stitching awl, #2 and #3 edge beveler, Optional rotary tool like a dremel with a sanding drum, Utility knife, 7/16" punch, Rubber punching pad, Optional scalpel, Stitching pliers, and Scissors. How to Carve Dragons Instructor: Roz Kaohn Cost: $115 Class Size: 15 max. Location: Salon J 8am-5pm In this class we will learn how to carve dragons so that each one will take on a personality of its own. Materials to bring: tracing film, pencil, rough sand paper, leathercraft cement, carving knife with curved tip, strop, dremel drill with small and large ball bit (1/16” bit), pointed nose tweezers, disposable lighter, small blow torch, and a spray water bottle. Location: Santa Fe 8am-5pm Making a Custom Motorcycle Seat – Day 1 of 2 Instructor: Lui Rayon Cost: $200 for both days 8am-5pm Class Size: 12 max. Location: Taos-2nd FL In this class we will make a book cover using Jessie’s technique of Northwest Style carving. Students need to bring tools, calipers, and a triangle. Leather and stamping surface will be provided. In this two-day class each student will make a custom motorcycle seat. On day 1 we will be making the pattern, laying out the design, carving, and gluing the top piece to the seat and molding. Seat pan, shoulder, foam, kangaroo lace, and Barge Aussie oil will be provided. Materials to bring: calipers, 1/8” hole punch, poundo board, marble slab, leather scissors, #3 edge beveler, bone folder, slicker, lacing fid, tracing paper, and stamping and carving tools. Materials to bring: figure carving tools, tooling surface, mallet, and swivel knife. 8am-12pm In this class Roz will teach you things that you will not find in any book. Some lessons will be hands on, others will be watch and take notes. Materials to bring: A 12” x 12” piece of 8-9-oz. tooling leather, marble tooling surface, carving knife, # 3 scalpel, leather shears, pro pedals (large & small), #5 multi-purpose tool, Basic 6 carving tools, spray water bottle, leathercraft cement, 12” ruler, tracing film, pencil, large modeling spoon, mallet, swivel knife, rough sand paper, and contact shelf paper. Page 2 How to Carve 3-D Feathers Instructor: Roz Kaohn Cost: $45 Class Size: 18 max. Location: Santa Fe 1pm-5pm In this class you will learn to carve 3-D feathers that you can use to make all kinds of cool projects. Materials to bring: Tooling marble, #3 scalpel, leather shears, #5 multi-purpose tool, B202L, B202R, swivel knife, mallet, #8 flat brush, tracing film, leather glow, spray water bottle, leathercraft cement, modeling spoon, Acrylic paint in following colors: delta cream, black, white, and brown. How to Make a Custom Motorcycle Seat – Day 2 of 2 8am-5pm Instructor: Lui Rayon Class Size: 12 max. Cost: $200 for both days Location: Taos-2nd FL This is day 2 of a 2-day class. On day 2 we will be finishing the edges, punching holes, double-loop lacing, applying oil, and Aussie finish. Plaiting a Kangaroo Leather Bolo Tie Instructor: Ann Ross Cost: $125 8am-5pm Class Size: 10 max. Location: Office Suite-2nd FL In this class we will learn basic plaiting skills while making a kangaroo leather bolo tie. Materials to bring: lacing fid, needle nose pliers, craft or small knife, ruler, threaded small round needle, and bone folder. Cost: $200 for all days Location: Salon H 8am-5pm Southwest Native American Designs Instructor: Brad Martin Cost: $100 8am-5pm This is day 3 of a 3-day class. Class Size: 18 max. Location: Salon I In this class Brad will teach his unique method of carving designs common to the Southwest Native American People. Materials to bring: basic carving tools, figure carving tools, common wood chisels (1” and smaller), and small jeweler’s screwdrivers. Figure Carving Buffalo Head and Landscape – Day 1 of 2 Instructor: Karen Siems Class Size: 15 max. Cost: $125 Location: Salon J 8am-5pm In this one-and-a-half day class you will learn how to figure carve a buffalo head and landscape. Materials to bring: tooling surface, mallet, swivel knife with 1/4 and 1/2 inch angle blades, hair blade, A98, A99, A104, A588, C770, and figure carving tools. Leather, transfer pattern and photo carve sheets will be provided. Page 3 Floral Pattern Design, Cutting Your Design, & Swivel Knife Design 8am-5pm Instructor: Al Gould Class Size: 18 max. Cost: $125 Location: Santa Fe In this class you will learn how to draw floral pattern s in the morning. In the afternoon you will learn how to carve the pattern. Materials to bring: paper, pencil, eraser, swivel knife, stylus (optional), and strop. Ken Griffin Style Notebook Instructor: Jim Linnell Cost: $75 8am-5pm Class Size: 12 max. Location: Taos-2nd FL In this workshop, students will carve a design in the manner and style that Ken Griffin was famous for. If you are not familiar with this style of work, you can get an idea by visiting http://www.elktracks.net/images/gallery/artwork/cowboy.jpg or http://www.elktracks.net/images/gallery/artwork/bucking_bronco.jpg Students will need to bring their favorite floral stamping tools, swivel knife, tooling surface, mallet, tracing tool, and whatever they like to use. The design will have a figure incorporated into it, so some basic figure carving bevellers and matting tools would be helpful. Leather and pattern will be provided. How to Make 3-D Rose Pins Instructor: Roz Kaohn Cost: $45 8am-12pm Class Size: 18 max. Location: Office Suite-2nd FL In this class students will learn how to make a 3-D rose pin, which afterwards you’ll be able to make any type of flower pin. Materials to bring: tracing film, poster board, 2 daubers, shears, awl, 1-pc 6” x 6” green pig skin suede, 1-pc 12” x 12” red pig suede, leathercraft cement, white glue, 3 disposable lighters, pencil, 1/4" x 13” any color ribbon, 1” pin back, stem tape roll. Special instructions: Do the following before coming to the show: Lay out your red and green pig suede on separate pieces of wax paper, then spray both sides evenly with starch. Blot any foam with paper towel. Let dry completely. Leather should be soft but stiff. Realistic Facial Features Instructor: Kathy Flanagan Cost: $45 1pm-5pm Class Size: 18 max. Location: Office Suite-2nd FL Do you have trouble getting that sparkle in your tooled eyes? You can't get the cavities out of your pearly whites? This workshop will clear up your concerns and questions on eyes, ears, mouths and noses. Hair textures and skin wrinkles will also be covered. If you have a specific problem, bring it to class, we'll work it out. All leather and patterns will be provided. Tools to bring: Swivel knife, scalpel, pro petal or undercut bevellers, modeling spoons, fine stylus, hair blades: large and small, pear shader P206 or similar, Figure carving tools: F series 902, 918, 941, any or all of 895 to 901. Saturday, October 15, 2011 Making Leather Cases Instructor: Randy Cornelius Cost: $25 Class Size: 18 max. Location: Salon G 1pm-5pm In this class students will be taught how to make a leather case for just about anything. A step-by-step power point presentation will show how to make wooden molds for forming leather cases as well as other methods. Each student will get a copy of the power point presentation to take home. All students need to bring is note taking materials. Page 4 How to Draw Sheridan-Style Patterns Instructor: Chan Geer Cost: $100 or $75 if also Class Size: 12 max. Location: Salon I enrolled in Photo Album class 8am-5pm In this class you will learn to draw your own Sheridan-style patterns. Each student will receive a “Drawing Sheridan Style Pattern Pack” by Chan Geer. Materials to bring: pencils, erasers, ruler, and a small square. Location: Taos-2nd FL This advanced class in extreme leather belt carving is designed for the experienced leathercrafter. Materials to bring: swivel knife, strop, and any surface you wish to have under the leather as you work. In this class Bob will teach how to properly use your tools. Saddle Repair and Restoration Instructor: Bob Klenda & Randy Cornelius Cost: $45 Class Size: 12 max. 1pm-5pm Location: Taos-2nd FL In this class Bob Klenda and Randy Cornelius team up and go over a Power Point presentation on saddle repair and restoration. Leather Carving Intro for Kids Instructor: Jim Linnell Cost: Free 8am-12pm Class Size: 20 max. Location: Salons A-F (Grand Ballrm) This class is designed as an introduction to the art of leather carving for kids and is open to anyone under 18 years young. Page 5
