CHICK PATTERN EASTER
Take Number 8 or 4 mm or 9 or 3 ¾mm needles, yellow double knit wool, and a small
amount of contrast colour for the top of the head.
Orange felt or wool for beak
Black wool for eyes
Ribbon, roses, sequins for decoration
Body and Head
Knitted in one piece in Garter stitch (every row knit).
Cast on 26 sts.
Knit 28 rows in Garter stitch in yellow, then Knit 4 to 5 rows in the colour of your choice.
New Row – K2 tog, all across row. Break off yarn leaving an end long enough to thread
through remaining stitches. Pull up remaining 13 stitches tightly and fasten off. Stitch with
a back seam about 4 rows in yellow for head, thread a running stitch through at this point
to form neck.
Stuff head then pull up thread at neck and fasten off tightly. Gather cast on stitches and
pull up and sew first 2/3 rows of back seam, leaving a gap between cast on stitches and neck
to insert egg.
Sew eyes with black wool 1 row below contrast colour then cut a small diamond in felt ( and stitch across centre on to head just below eyes.
Place ribbon in a bow around neck and add any other decoration as you wish .

NOTES
Stuffing for heads available from any haberdashery shop, use only polyester filling that
complies to BS standard. Without seeming presumptuous, please could you make every
effort to decorate and pretty the chicks up.
We would appreciate it if all knitters would concentrate on this new chick pattern because
it is such a simple pattern and has proved to be very popular in recent Chick Knit seasons.
If possible we would like all the chicks in by January of every year to give us time to fill the
chicks with the chocolate eggs and get them ready for distribution.

NOVELTY
EGG
PATTERN
Novelty egg pattern for Easter
Materials
Knitting yarn : Small oddments of double knit in bright colours .
Knitting Needles : No 11 or 3mm
Plastic stick on wiggle eyes
Glue : Quick drying adhesive such as all pupose UHU
Instructions
Begin at lower hem edge of the egg cup and using the colour required, cast on 20 sts
loosely. P 1 row
K4, M1 ( make one) K4, M1, to end – total 24 stiches
K row, for base edge of hem, this completes the hem section.
Beginning with a K row, st-st 8 rows
Join on another strand of yarn and using the two strands, begin with a P row, st-st 2 rows.
This forms top edge of egg cup
Break off yarns and join on white or apricot for the egg section
On the next row, treat the two loops on each st as one st.
K23 sts through the back of the two loops on each st, K last st through front of the two
loops.
Beginning with a P row, st-st 9 rows.
OR
If knitting an integral hat, st-st 7 rows and change colour. St-st 4 rows then shape as
below.
Shape top of Egg (K1, K2tog) to end -16 sts
P1 row.
(K2tog) to end – 8 sts, break off yarn leaving a long end, thread through sts, pull to gather
tightly then fasten off.
To make up
Oversew the row ends together then leave the P Side outside. Fold the hem section up at
the K row. Catch the cast on edge in place, taking care not to pull the stiches too tightly.
Turn right side out. The double thickness hem extends beyond the base of the egg so that
the pocket stands up and holds the egg securely in place.
Add wiggley eyes, colour cheeks slightly with red pencil.

If possible we would like all the novelty eggs in by January of every year to give us time to
fill the eggs with the chocolate eggs and get them ready for distribution.

BEANIE [see blue egg cup below]
Begin at lower edge and ising yellow cast on 24 sts. St-st 6 rows.
Shape top
Next row: (k1, k2tog) to end – 16 sts. P 1 row.
Next row: (K2tog) to end – 8 sts. B&T tightly.
To make up: Oversew the row ends together, then turn right side out. Place beanie on the
egg, with seam at centre back. Sew cast on edge in place.
BERET [see green egg cup]
Follow the knitting instructins exactly as given for the
beanie noting that P side of the beret is right side.
To make up: oversew the row ends together then turn
right side out. Sew a asmall loop of matching yarn into
centre top of the beret. Allowing the cast on edge to
turn in, place beret centrally on top of the egg with seam at centre back. Sew cast on edge
in place.
BERET WITH FLOWERS [see pink egg cup]
Follow the instructions as given for the beret omitting the loop at centre top.
Place beret on the egg with seam at centre back and tilting it to one side as ilustrated.
Sew cast on edge in place.
Flowers: Cast on 18 sts. B&T tightly, noting that right side is facing as the sts are slipped
off the knitting needle.
Using the cast on the tail-end of yarn catch the row ends together, then sew the end into
back of the flower. Use the B&T tail-end to sew flower to the beret.
CAP WITH POINTY TIP [see orange egg cup below]
Begin at lower edge and using yellow casts on 24 sts. G-st 2 rows.
Break off yarn and join on green. Beginning with a K row, st-st 6 rows.
Shape top of cap
Next row: (K1, K2tog) to end – 16 sts. P 1 row.
Next row: (K2tog) to end – 8 sts. Beginning with a P row, st-st 2 rows. B&T tightly.
To make up: Oversew the row ends together, then turn right side out. Put a little stuffing
in the pointed top section. Place cap on the egg as illustrated, with seam at centre back.
Sew cast on edge in place.
FLOWER HEADBAND [see light pink egg cup]
Begin at lower edge and using shocking pink casts
on 32 sts. Cast off, noting that cast off row is wrong
side and also top edge of the band.
Catch row ends together, then sew tail-ends into
wrong side. Turn right side out. Place band on the
egg as illustrated, with seam at one side of the eyes.
Sew in place along centre of the piece.
Flowers: Using yellow, make flower as shown for the beret with flowers.
BOBBLE HAT [see red egg cup below]
Begin at lower edge and using gold casts on 24 sts. G-st 2 rows.
Break off yarn and join on red. Beginning with a K row, st-st 4 rows.
Shape top of cap
Next row: (K1, K2tog) to end – 16 sts. P 1 row.
Next row: (K2tog) to end – 8 sts. Break off yarn, join on gold for the bobble and P 1 row.
Beginning with a P row, st-st 4 rows. B&T tightly.
To make up: Oversew the row ends together then turn right side out. Put a little stuffing in
the bobble. Knot a length of matching yarn tightly around first knitted row of the bobble.
Sew yarn ends into bobble.
Place cap on the egg as illustrated, with seam at centre back. Sew cast on edge in place.
HAT WITH A BOW [see the gold egg cup]
Begin at lower edge of the hat and using
orange casts on 24 sts. Beginning with a P
row, st-st 4 rows.
Shape top of hat
Next row: (P1, P2tog) to end – 16 sts. K 1
row.
Next row: (P2tog) to end – 8 sts. B&T tightly.
To make up: oversew the row ends together, the turn right side out. Sew casts on edge to
the egg, tilting the hat to one side as illustrated and with seam at centre back.
Bow: Using turquoise cast on 20 sts. Cast off, noting that cast off row is wrong side.
Oversew the row ends together. Sew the tail-ends of yarn into the piece, then turn right
side out. Bring the row ends seam to centre of the piece. Using matching yarn, knot a
length tightly around the centre, to form two equal loops. Sew one tail-end into bow. Use
the remaining tail-end to sew bow to centre top of the hat.
