NICU Friendly Gown - Pattern & Tutorial Our NICU friendly gown fit most babies 3-7lbs (1.3 – 3.2kg). These gowns have been designed to fit around babies’ monitors and wires, and are easy to take on and off while keeping baby warm. NICU Gown Requirements: Gowns for babies in INCUBATORS: Must be made from new 100% pure cotton. Gowns for babies in COTS: Can be made from new brushed, flannelette or plain cotton or merino. Other Requirements: Make sure to pre-wash your fabric in warm or hot water & dry on high. It is important to use Velcro and not other types of fasteners, such as domes, or plastic snaps. Sometimes NICU babies are undressed in a hurry, and Velcro is one of the easiest and fastest things for the nurses to get open and out of the way in a hurry. This pattern was designed by Everything Your Mama Made & More! www.everythingyourmamamade.com CUTTING OUT Per gown you will need: - Main fabric o Front (A) – 1 Pair o Back (B) – 1 cut on fold - Lining fabric: o Front (A) – 1 Pair o Back (B) – 1 cut on fold - Velcro (approx. 2cm wide x 15cm long) You can cut out approx. 6 garments from 1 metre of each fabric (main and contrast). SEWING All seam allowances are 6mm unless stated otherwise. Seam allowances are included in the pattern. - - - Start with main fabric. With right sides together lay A on top of B with shoulders matching. Sew SHOULDER seam with a 1cm seam. (Ensure the left and the right fronts are positioned correctly). Repeat with lining fabric. Iron seams open. Lay main fabric right side UP. Lay lining fabric right side DOWN on top of main fabric. Sew around the whole gown – follow the red dotted line in diagram (on the right) and leave a 5cm gap at the bottom of B. Turn out the right way and push out corners and edges with a thick knitting needle. Top stitch the whole gown 2mm from the edge, closing gap at the same time. Add Velcro - Strip of Velcro goes on the MAIN FABRIC SIDE of the right hand front - Squares of Velcro go on the LINING SIDE of the back. (Refer to the pattern for placement). Yay, you are finished!
