PRESIDENT
Welcome to all previous and new swimmers to our summer Long Course season. Soon
we will be swimming outdoors at our Park District pools. I am looking forward to an
exciting and fun season under our new head coach Glenn Brown. He is no stranger to
our team and I know he and his staff are dedicated to the success of our swimmers.
As usual, we are hosting two summer meets at Birchwood. We will need the help of
every parent to ensure the success of these meets. We will be asking one parent per
family to volunteer for each session you have a swimmer. Thank you in advance for your
help. These meets are the biggest fundraiser we have as a team. Parent volunteers are
what make these meets run efficiently. These meets also are the main reason we are
able to keep our registration costs the lowest in the whole northwest suburbs for a team of
our size.
The other exciting news is that we have a team travel meet to Fishers, Indiana the week
after our Frenzy. There are no time standards to qualify so anyone who wishes to go is
able to do so. We will set up a hotel with special rates. This information will be out
shortly via our website.
Our website is the best source for information regarding our team. It can take a while to
learn how to navigate, but it is easily mastered. If you can’t get an answer from the
website, do not hesitate to email the coaches or a Parent Board member. We try to be as
prompt as possible with responses.
Good luck to all swimmers and I hope you reach all your goals for the summer.

COACHING STAFF
Greetings,
I hope everyone had the opportunity to enjoy a nice relaxing break before we
began the long course season. This past season was the craziest, most stressful season
for me in many different ways. I am now able to return my complete attention and
dedication to the athletes of our team. I have now been coaching with PPD for 3 years
and have witnessed many swimmers, achieving more successes, than I could imagine.
While beginning my 4th year here with the Tiger Sharks.......I haven’t been this excited in
a very long time!
With the beginning of a new season, there are numerous reasons to be excited.
Swimming outside!! For me, that’s enough. However, we also have numerous swimmers
moving into new groups. Many new swimmers and families joining our PPD family.
Another group of seniors graduating, college level swimmers returning for the summer,
new coaches on staff and old coaches with new positions.
The sound of swimmers doing laps in the cool air of summer mornings, working, laughing
and achieving their goals is the ultimate. Our Park District facilities are beautiful, and
second to none for training during the long course season. I also can’t wait for our first
meet. Everyone needs to make sure and “commit” for swim meets to be entered.
Coaches will only enter swimmers for selected days/sessions for which they are signed
up.
Summer season also means the return of our 2 biggest fundraisers of the year. Our
Frenzy as well as our Summer Splash swim meets are very exciting. All PPD swimmers
will be entered in both meets and parents volunteering at both will be crucial to the
success of both. More details to come………..
Coach Tony and I are looking forward to our new responsibilities with PPD and would like
to welcome Dustin Thompson as our new Head Developmental Coach. Please help
welcome Dustin to the PPD family. Also joining our staff is Mike Huffman who will be
leading the charge with our Senior group and Rick Schaefer will also be lending his
expertise in swimming with our youngest swimmers. Pre-Comp, I believe has the highest
number of swimmers registered for that group in 3 years. Coach Erika and Coach Kristy
have done an amazing job with this group and look forward to continuing the development
of our youngest and newest swimmers.
Please, feel free to email, call or stop any member of the coaching staff with any
questions, concerns or comments you may have.
See you on deck,
Glenn- Coach Brown

This season brings many new faces to the Palatine Tiger Sharks, here is a short bio
on each of the coaches for the 2010 Long Course season……..
COACH BROWN
Coach Brown was born on October 15th, 1968 in Chicago, Illinois. Growing up in the
south suburbs he learned to swim at the Harvey YMCA. Living in Dolton until the age of 7
and then moving to Homewood, which he still considers his "hometown".
Glenn Gibson Brown began swimming competitively at the age of 7 for the Harvey Y. He
then competed for the Homewood-Flossmoor Swim Club, Lincoln Trail Y(located at
Governors State University), Skyline Pool (summer league, located in Chicago Heights)
and all thru high school for the Joliet Jets YMCA swim team in Joliet, Illinois, This in
addition to 4 years of varsity swimming for Homewood-Flossmoor H.S.. Graduating in
1986, he then took his swimming skills to Drury University in Springfield, MO.. Glenn
earned All-American honors his 2nd year at Drury in both breaststroke events.
After school, Glenn found a job with the Illinois Tollway and worked the next 19 years
doing everything within the Tollway. Yes, he even stood in a tollbooth and collected tolls.
Becoming a swim coach turned reality in the fall of '97 with the Naperville YMCA as Head
Age Group Coach. Then, receiving a call from Andy Rose in the spring of '07, decided to
return to the sport that has been so good to him and his family for years.
Coach Brown was born to Philip H. Brown and Diana L. Brown (Lester). He has one
brother who also is the Head Coach for the national powerhouse Sarasota YMCA Sharks,
located in Sarasota, FL.. Steven A. Brown is married to Anne (Matuzak) and has three
beautiful girls aged 3 1/2, 1 1/2 and 4 months. Unfortunately both of Coach Brown's
parents are now deceased. Diana in December of '96 and Phil in February of '10.
Growing up his extended family was very close and he has numerous aunts, uncles and
cousins still in the Chicago-land area.
In his spare time Coach Brown likes to golf, attend concerts, summer festivals and spend
time with his friends and family. Cheering for his beloved Chicago White Sox and Florida
Gators while laying on the sandy beach of Siesta Key is the ultimate afternoon in Coach
Brown's world.
Peace,
Glenn Brown

COACH TONY
Originally from Munster, Indiana, Coach Tony was a late bloomer in the swimming world.
Growing up playing baseball and basketball, Gallagher began swimming as a Freshman
at Munster High School. Once his high school days were over, he went on to earn a
swimming scholarship at Western Illinois University. Knowing that he wanted to be a
professional swim coach, Coach Tony chose Kinesiology as his major. By the spring of
2009, Tony had been Captain of the Leathernecks his Junior and Seniors campaigns and
ended up serving as an Assistant Coach during his fifth year. In between summers at
Western, Coach Tony had coached with BR Ryall and PPD as an Assistant to the late
Andy Rose, while swimming as a member of the National teams.
After graduating with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Kinesiology with a K-12 Teaching
Certificate, Coach Tony was hired as an Assistant Coach to Matt Lee with his hometown
Munster Swim Club. Tony not only had the opportunity to work with a strong age group
program, but also had to opportunity to work with many Junior National and Olypmpic
Trial Qualifiers at Munster. During the month of June, Gallagher ventured to the University
of Georgia, working as an Assistant Coach for the UGA swim camps. While at UGA,
Coach Tony was able to learn from 2008 USA Head Swimming Coach Jack Bauerle and
the rest of the UGA staff about everything and anything swimming. Upon the end of the
2009 long-course season, Gallagher received the call from Andy to return to PPD and the
rest is history.
In his first season as Head Age Group Coach, and fourth season with PPD, Coach Tony
looks forward to the opportunity of the continued development and success to the Top
Age Groups. He possesses and in depth plan in stroke mechanics, seasonal
progressions, and dry land training throughout the program's levels. Coach Tony is
currently awaiting the news of his Level III ASCA Certification. He is also an avid Cubs,
Bulls, and Bears fan.
Live slow, swim fast.

COACH DUSTIN
Hi, my name is Dustin Thompson; and I’ll be heading up the novice and developmental
groups for the Summer 2010 season. I’ve called Munster, Indiana my home for the most
part, but I’m extremely excited to be part of the Palatine Park District Sharks family now! I
have three younger brothers who all swam at Munster and went on to swim for NYU and
the University of Pennsylvania. As for me, I swam primarily the 200 IM and 500 Free at
Munster HS and then a wide range of events from the 200 Fly to the 400 IM and 100
Breaststroke at our Sectional and Junior National meets. After graduating I had the
privilege to swim 4 years at Penn State where I competed in the 200 Fly, 400 IM and 500
Free at the Big Ten Championships.
As for coaching, I spent a summer running some groups for the Penn State summer swim
camps. After a couple years away from the pool, I did some volunteer coaching and filling
in for the youngest kids and some of the high school practices down in Venice, Florida.
Lastly, I helped the PPD sharks Pre-Comp group out at the beginning of the 2007
Fall/Winter season. I have been coached by 15 different coaches at a very high level and
attended numerous camps by coaches from all over the country so I have picked up a
LOT of different coaching styles, ideas, and philosophies! I very much look forward to
passing TONS of swimming knowledge and a LOVE of this sport onto each and every
one of you!!!
What I expect from all the PPD swimmers:
1. Good Attitude: The word “can’t” is not going to be in our vocabulary!!! “I’ll try my
hardest to…” and “I’ll do my best to…” shows the CAN-DO attitude that we are going to
have throughout the year as we build endurance, gain strength, and perfect our stroke
mechanics, starts, turns, and streamlining.
2. Hard Work: Competitive swimming requires dedication and hard work. I expect you
all to be at as many practices as possible…It’s the best way to IMPROVE!!
3. Desire: I want you all to desire to swim faster, swim smarter, and have fun doing so!!!!
Swimming isn’t all about working hard. It’s about having fun and making new friends too!
What to expect from me:
You can expect from me the same things that I expect from you: a GREAT ATTITUDE,
HARD WORK, and a burning desire to be at the pool with you guys! You should expect
to have a great time and learn a LOT of new things. I’m extremely excited to be getting
started!!!!!
Always open for questions/comments/concerns,

TREASURER
To all of those who have been able to make a donation in Andy's Memory to the Andy
Rose Memorial, please know that your generosity and the kindness of your heart in a
trying time are gifts that will be remembered by this Swim Team.
The Palatine Swim Team is very much like a family and everyone coming together and
seeing each
other through the moments of sadness this past Winter Short-Course Season are proof
enough of that.
We are very proud that over $3,700 has been generated in the Memorial Fund and
several items are being considered in ensuring the appropriate utilization of these funds,
in honor of Andy's memory, towards the sport of swimming. The Board and the Coaching
Staff have agreed to make a strong commitment to on-going training efforts through the
acquisition of training equipment which all swimmers on the Team will be able to make
use of in furthering their swimming achievements and Team equipment that the Coach's
will be able to utilize in their efforts towards the achievements of our swimmers.
Additionally, the Parent Board has always striven to include in its budget amounts
adequate enough to allow for a swimmer scholarship each season. In light of Andy's
commitment to swimming and his clear understanding that if a swimmer wants to swim
that we will do whatever it takes to get them in the water, the Parent Board recently
named the Team's Scholarship Fund in honor of Andy. The Palatine Swim Team Andy
Rose Scholarship will allow for Andy's commitment to his swimmers to live on forever.
The Parent Board and the entire Team would like to acknowledge the gifts made to the
Memorial Fund and to express a very sincere thank you to those that contributed.
There is no doubt that Andy's legacy to his and all of our swimmers will be everlasting.
Thank you.

ESCROW
We are beginning the summer Long Course season and it will go by quickly! It is very
important that you monitor your escrow balance throughout the season. You must be
logged in to the website (www.ppdswim.org) in order to find your current escrow balance
and to see all charges against your escrow account. Click on "My Invoice/Payment" on
the left side of the screen. This will bring up a list of all invoices processed against your
account. On the right side of the screen, there is a column titled "Account Balance". This
is your current family escrow balance. If the top account balance is negative, you
currently have funds in your escrow account. If the top account balance is positive, you
need to send a check to cover the amount due (and additional funds for any upcoming
meets).
If you click on "view" by your current account balance, you will see all items charged
against your escrow account and all funds deposited into your escrow account for the
current month. The website generates “invoices” each month on the 21st so you will see
items move from "Un-Invoiced Items" to "Current Invoiced Items" each month. The meet
fees are listed by meet and indicate the number of Individual events and the number of
Relay events that each swimmer was charged for each meet. Please note that if you
signed up for a meet, but were unable to attend the meet, your escrow account will be
charged because we must still pay the host team for entries submitted.
You can get a summary of the entire season’s fees and deposits by clicking on “Show
Billing/Payment History”. Input beginning date of season and ending date of season. All
charges for the season will be displayed.
If you have any questions, please contact us at the e-mails listed above.

FUNDRAISING
The Palatine Swim Team offers a variety of ways for families to earn 100% of their
fundraising fees each season. There are also opportunities to fundraise for the Team in
general. In both cases, fundraising is essential in helping to maintain the cost to athletes
participating on the Palatine Swim Team. Monies earned for family/individual fundraising
will be applied toward the following season’s fundraising commitment. Excess “earned”
monies can be rolled over for one season. Use of earned monies cannot exceed the
fees paid the previous season. Detailed information and order forms for various
fundraising opportunities are available on the fundraising page of the Palatine Swim
Team at: www.ppdswim.org
Any ideas? The Tiger Sharks are always looking for new ideas for fundraising and would
love to hear your ideas!
Fannie May Candy Bars
Everybody likes Chocolate Bars!! Obviously, these are easy to sell……….basically, a
“buck a bar”. Candy Bar sales return 45% of each dollar of sales to the family. Candy
bars are purchased from the Team for $52 per box of 52 bars. Each box purchased
earns back $23.40 towards your fundraising commitment. To purchase boxes, just drop
me an email at [email protected]
Manna Express Scrip Orders
Orders are placed bi-weekly. Orders are due on Monday mornings and are typically
available for pick-up 2 days later on the following Wednesday or Thursday. Families can
earn 2-20% of their order towards their fundraising fees. The list of MannaExpress
vendors and vendor guidelines can be found at www.mannaexpress.net. Be sure to
check the website often, as vendors and discounts are constantly changing. All orders
should be sent to: [email protected], or ask me how to enter your own orders on the
website. Orders of $300 or more should be prepaid by cash or check payable to Palatine
Swim Team. Smaller orders can be paid for at time of pick-up.
Reminder - If you order manna cards, we will send you an email confirmation back that
we have received your order. If you do not receive confirmation back by the Sunday
before orders are placed, please call us at 847.925.1819 to verify that we got your
order.
Yankee Candles Fundraiser
The Swim Team will run 2 Yankee Candle Fundraisers each year. The first will be in
March or April, the second in the Fall for the holidays. Families will earn back 20% of
their order towards their fundraising commitment, and the Team also earns 20%. The
Fall Fundraiser has been completed. Watch for emails in the Spring indicating the dates
for the Spring Fundraiser.
Home Meet Heat Sheet Advertisements
Advertisements in the Team’s psyche sheet for the Home Meets can be sold to various
business and vendors. Families earn back 85% of each contracted advertisement. The
ads may be tax deductable for the business, too!
Information and instructions for Heat Sheets will be available on-line before each
scheduled Home Meet. Watch for emails regarding due dates .
TIGER SHARK DISCOUNT CARD

discounts and free offers to over 20 local merchants. The cards sell for $10, with a $1
earn back for each card purchased. Card discounts will be valid thru September 2010..

MEET DIRECTORS
Are you ready for some outdoor swimming?
It's about that time when we get to showcase the premier outdoor pool in the state of
Illinois, Birchwood Pool. Starting with the "Shark Frenzy" on June 19th & 20th!
Traditionally this been a smaller meet but is good preparation for our Summer Splash in
July. Did you know that for years the Frenzy was a time trials type meet that was held on
only a Friday night? (even before Birchwood pool opened to the public!) Many times the
lightening ended the meet before the entries did. In attendance were mostly PPD
swimmers and it gave us both the opportunity and benefit of testing our timing equipment
before the always well-attended Summer Splash. With the renovation of our pool only
recently have we been able to host a 2 day open meet format such as the Frenzy.
You will soon be contacted via email by our very organized and enthusiastic Volunteer
Coordinator, Betsy Smith to sign up for various meet assignments on our website. Hers is
a monumental job and hosting a meet would be next to impossible without it. A parent of
each swimmer is required to assist in the running of a successful home meet. Your help is
only needed in the session your child is swimming. Nothing more. If for some reason you
can't full fill you assignment, please let Betsy know so she can coordinate a replacement.
There are various jobs that are available: timing, concessions, safety Marshall, runner,
computer table, bullpen and more. If you happen to be at a position away from the
pool, arrangements can be made for you to see your child swim. They are the whole
reason we are doing this in the first place! Your time and help is greatly appreciated.
The Summer Splash is July 9th, 10th and 11th. Our Splash will be one of the most
competitive meets in the state. Most of the top Illinois Age Group and Senior teams will be
here as well as teams from Wisconsin and Minnesota. Our Summer Splash gives
athletes one of the last opportunities before the championship season to attain time
standards that will take them into the Championship season.
At the conclusion of the scheduled Splash events, a sanctioned "Time Trials" will be
offered. An additional fee will apply for each event a swimmer chooses to enter. Those
swimmers that are close to a particular time standard will voluntarily have
another opportunity to achieve their cut(s). This is a very exciting time and truly a race
against the clock. Some heats may only have one swimmer while others may have 4,6 or
8 swimmers all doing different strokes, but all with the same goal in mind. Some may
be trying for a Regional time, some for a Jr. National time. It doesn't matter. If or when
they get their cut the reaction is always the same...joy, relief & satisfaction... If you are not
busy, please consider sticking around or returning for the excitement. You will not be
disappointed.
