This event, which serves as a kick-off for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, is sponsored by the Atlantic Medical Imaging Foundation and benefits the Ruth Newman Shapiro Cancer and Heart Fund. To date, The AMI Foundation has raised more than $255,000.00 for RNS and its initiatives. Galloway National Golf Club is a private, world-class 18-hole championship golf course ranked one of “America’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses”. Although the skies threatened to storm all day, golfers enjoyed the sand hills of South Jersey, over looking the skyline of Atlantic City that the course provides. The day began with a delicious lunch, followed by a shotgun start, with a shamble format. Noted for their 4-star dining, not a single Continued on page 7 Irving Fryar (center) lends fashion advice A Rose for Rose The 48th anniversary celebration of the RNS Ball was an outstanding event and because it was dedicated to our beloved founder, Rose Newman, it was much more special. We were delighted to have several members of Rose’s family share the evening with us. Chairs for the 2009 ball were Mr. & Mrs. Howard (Charlotte) Berger and Mr. & Mrs. Harold (Martha) Moskowitz. I am truly honored to have been given the chance to serve as leader of such a prestigious organization that does so much for the benefit of our community. Our entirely volunteer charity continues to raise funds to ensure that proper medical treatment and facilities are available locally. As we continue to face economic challenges in the world today, it is of the utmost importance that we continue to fulfill our pledges to area hospitals and healthcare facilities. To accomplish this, we will have to continue to work hard as a board as we give our time, efforts and talents for each and every fundraiser. We must continue our fundraising efforts and find new ways to raise funds. I know our group of dedicated board members can do anything we put our minds to! We, of course, couldn’t raise the funds we do without the support of our generous benefactors and the community. The road ahead may have some bumps and obstacles but I see RNS having a bright future and I am proud and excited to be a part of it. I intend to do my best in leading the board to even greater successes. Most importantly, we must always remind ourselves why we are here doing what we do. Through the generosity of Robert and Stephanie Himmelstein we are heading to Ocean City for the first time in our 19 years of presenting a Show House. This lovely 1907 Dutch Colonial is located at 1501 Wesley Avenue and offers unbeatable ocean views. Past supporters of RNS and first time visitors will be amazed at the magical work of our designers. Also in conjunction with the Show House we will once again have five informative and fun lectures which are included with the purchase of a single ticket. Our many talented and well known designers are usually on hand in their respective rooms on Thursday evenings. The designers are an entertaining group and enjoy conversing with our many visitors. Ocean City has many attractions to offer Show House visitors, so please make a day of it and enjoy lunch and or dinner, stroll the family friendly Boardwalk and shop the downtown merchants. The current owners of the home, Dr. & Mrs. Richard Lucas generously allowed RNS to take possession of their home for the summer. It seems as though every year we say “This is the best Show House ever!”, and this year was no exception. Our group of loyal designers never fails to amaze and inspire us and they always exceed our expectations. Kudos to all the designers and their crews of workmen for a job well done. Special thanks to Paula Jane D’Amato who graciously offered her time and energy to this project. She willingly shared her fond memories of the years she spent living at 12 S. Suffolk Avenue. Thank you to all of our wonderful RNS members and our loyal volunteers who dedicate numerous hours in bringing the Show House to fruition. You are the best! Terry Calvi, Chair Owners of La Dolce Vita On a cloudy summer afternoon, our day was made special by the visit to the Show House of the McManus family. Dr. Steve McManus, who works for Atlantic Medical Imaging in Central Jersey, wife Shanda and daughter Madison came to visit their “old” home. They told us stories about the home that they loved and changes that they had made. The kitchen was a delight for them – it had been their dream years ago. The D’Amato family was the first owner, Dorothy Nahas the second owner, the McManus family number three and to date, Dick and Maryanne Lucas. We enjoyed the McManus family and hope to see them on a future visit. Harriet Friedman, Editor 4 may www.rnscancerandheartfund.org 2010 2009 Preview Party A very special house, “La Dolce Vita” was the scene of our annual Preview Party, celebrating the anniversary of our “Show House at the Shore”. And what a scene it was!! A big thank you to our host Bill McCullough and to Paula Jane D’Amato, who grew up in the house as the daughter of Paul “Skinny” D’Amato. Their involvement was greatly appreciated, as was our hardworking chairwomen Shirley Belitsky, Anna Humphrey and Andrea Moss, all contributing to create the most fabulous party ever!! The balmy summer weather was a bonus to an already festive evening filled with friends of Paula Jane and the many RNS supporters returning year after year. The bartenders and service staff of Local 54 looked smashing in their fedora hats and black tee shirts, highlighting the 500 Club, the legendary nightclub owned by Skinny and known for bringing together Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis, etc…the rest is showbiz history. The happy and well-dressed crowd munched on White House subs, Cookie, Kathy, Roe, Marty tomato pies and deli wraps, China Dumpling’s delicious hors d’oeuvres, Mediterranean dips, made by Nicole Harris, as well as fabulous shrimp donated by Sage. Cheese and fruit platters were beautifully arranged amongst the stellar desserts created by the many pastry chefs from the casinos, as well as local restaurants. We are so grateful for their support. A show stopping table highlighting their famous breads was presented by Formica Bakery. Even Frank, its owner, showed up! La Dolce Vita, “the good life”, was a celebration that will long be remembered as a dazzling kick off for a most successful Show House season. All the departing guests agreed they had a fantastic evening and are all looking forward to next year’s Preview Party. Supervising one or two shifts a week, each of you directed the daily activities of our hundreds of volunteers. As captains you digested scores of rules and regulations relaying this information to each volunteer that covered a room in the Skinny D’Amato home. Fast and furious are words that come to mind. As a captain, you were multitasking as an instructor (let me show you how that Toto toilet works in the basement), head of security (everyone in their room), information central (I can find that answer), paper pusher (all hear say “I”), raffle ticket seller and furniture purveyor (lots of red dots), trouble shooter (we can remedy that) and above all, “diplomats”! It was a truly diverse job. The title “RNS Show House Captain” is well worth a line on your resume! You all did your jobs so beautifully and professionally and are well qualified to supervise our next Show House at the Shore. It offers the most advanced diagnostic and treatment technology, including technology new to the southeastern New Jersey region. AtlantiCare earned the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certification, for designing, constructing and operating the facility as a high performance green building. “We understood that our community truly needed a Cancer Care Institute,” said David P. Tilton, president and CEO, AtlantiCare. “This Cancer Care Institute is that commitment come to life. We have brought together compassionate and skilled clinical and support staff, exceptional physicians, a respected clinical partner in The Fox Chase Cancer Center, and the latest clinical technology, in this beautiful facility that we designed around the unique wants and needs of cancer patients and their families.” “This facility makes it possible for our patients and their families to receive the best cancer care possible,” said Lori Herndon, president and chief executive officer, AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center (ARMC). She also thanked AtlantiCare’s Board leadership, “for their wisdom and encouragement to pursue building this cancer center for our community.” Outpatient oncology and radiation services previously offered at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center (ARMC) Mainland campus in Pomona have relocated to the new facility, which offers chemotherapy/infusion treatments, diagnostic services, as well as access to the latest clinical trials as a Fox Chase Cancer Center Partner. 8 The AtlantiCare Cancer Care Institute offers CyberKnife® Robotic Radiosurgery System is the world’s only robotic radiosurgery system designed to treat tumors anywhere in the body non-invasively. It continually tracks, detects and corrects for any movement of the patient or tumor. “We can now treat previously hard to reach cancers, including those of the lung, brain, spine, liver, pancreas and kidney – non-invasively,” said Jonathan Law, MS, DABR, DABMP, director, Medical Physics AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center. “Side effects are minimal and there is little or no recovery time.” AtlantiCare Cancer Care Institute radiation technology also includes linear accelerator image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT), including Varian RapidArc™; Elekta Synergy® Platform intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT); Xoft® electronic brachytherapy; 64-slice GE Discovery PET/CT 600; GE Wide Bore LightSpeed®16 slice CT. Additional Patient and Family Services The AtlantiCare Cancer Care Institute has on-site laboratory, pharmacy, social work, nutrition and lymphedema therapy services. It also offers Preparing for Chemotherapy and Preparing for Radiation Therapy classes, Look Good…Feel Better®, and other educational and community events. Healing Arts The work of more than 40 artists and/or artist teams from New Jersey and the Philadelphia area contributes to the healing environment in the AtlantiCare Cancer Care Institute. Through its Healing Arts Program, AtlantiCare asked artists to submit proposals that supported the “healing through The Flower is Joy Sculpture by José Chora of Chora Leone The Seed is Hope Sculpture by José Chora of Chora Leone nature” theme of the Cancer Care Institute. “I was in awe of all the local talent we witnessed while making our selections,” said Dee Kassis, RN, chair, AtlantiCare Foundation Board of Trustees and member of the AtlantiCare Arts Committee, of Absecon, NJ. “Our focus was to make sure the pieces we chose were of a superior caliber and in keeping with our theme of healing through nature. The awesome array of pieces will have a tremendous impact on patients, family and staff.” “Members of AtlantiCare’s Arts Committee carefully considered how each piece of work would affect patients, families and staff,” said Gary Hill, committee member and vice president of communications, Metropolitan Business & Citizens Association, of Atlantic City. “All of us have known someone touched by cancer. We were honored to serve on this committee. We wish all who will visit AtlantiCare’s new Cancer Center well.” Joanie San Chirico, of Toms River, an artist and cancer survivor, designed a triptych titled, “Woodlands Sunrise.” Each of her three paintings is 50 inches high by 30 inches wide; the two outer paintings show abstract trees with dappled sunlight and the middle painting depicts the forest floor with a blue sky. “If I can make another cancer patient see something in my work that may ease their mind, then I’ve accomplished something significant,” said San Chirico. Additional signature artists were partners José Chora and Judy Leone, of Absecon and their team, Michael Delfiandra and Ryan Noll, of Egg Harbor Township; and Erin Endicott, of Port Republic. Their pieces, “The Seed is may www.rnscancerandheartfund.org 2010 FROM THE EXPERTS Hope” and “The Flower is Joy” are at the front and back entrances to the building. Community Advisory Group AtlantiCare’s Cancer Center Community Advisory Group of individuals from throughout the community affected by cancer, shared ideas and recommendations for the new facility. Members included cancer survivors, family members and loved ones of those who have had cancer, and health care professionals. This group continues to meet and provides valuable insight AtlantiCare incorporates into its cancer care programs and services. “Since they’ve experienced cancer treatment first-hand, their insights into what works well, what could be improved, and what would make the experience more pleasant was truly invaluable,” said Lauren Ochs, executive director AtlantiCare Oncology Services. “A cancer diagnosis brings many changes,” said Craig Keyser, chairman, ARMC Board of Trustees. “One of them is a lot of time in treatment centers. We envisioned a bright, airy, comfortable, positive, hopeful, thoughtfully-designed cancer treatment center that would help make the experience of cancer just a little bit better. Everything we envisioned has come to life, and then some.” Sponsorship Opportunities Donors have the opportunity to sponsor AtlantiCare Cancer Care Institute art, the facility and/or technology as a new option for contributing to the AtlantiCare Foundation, which raises funds for ARMC programs and services. William Elliot Executive Director, Shore Memorial Health Foundation 9 RNS supporter RNS Office: 609-487-1190 FROM THE EXPERTS 2009 Report to the Community Bacharach Institute for Rehabilitation celebrated 85 years of serving the rehabilitation needs of the community in May on Mothers Day. More than eight decades after opening its doors in Longport, Bacharach continues to be a leader in quality of services and programs of excellence. Today Bacharach has physical, occupational and speech and hearing services for children on an outpatient basis at the main campus in Pomona. The entire sundrenched second floor of the Leonard M. Hollander Ambulatory Care Center is filled with pediatric treatment rooms including a pediatric gym, a quiet room and a sensory stimulation room. Parents may accompany their children or observe the therapies from televisions outside of the therapy area. Hearing services for children begin at birth when babies who are thought to have failed a hearing screen are referred for further testing. Bacharach boasts the most cutting edge testing equipment, including objective measures that detect hearing response without a cooperating infant. Adults with hearing loss may seek treatment at either our main campus or at our convenient second location in Somers Point. Our four audiologists, under the leadership of Dr. Janet Revelle, are licensed hearing aid dispensers and offer the newest computerized digital state of the art designs in hearing instruments. Speaking of convenience, Bacharach has 14 physical and occupational therapy centers in 4 counties: Ocean County, Atlantic County, Cape May County and Cumberland County. If you need PT or OT, we hope that one of these locations 10 will be perfect for you: Manahawkin, Tuckerton, Brigantine, Atlantic City, Galloway, Pomona, Mays Landing, Egg Harbor Township, Bargaintown, Margate, Somers Point, Ocean City North, Ocean City South, Cape May Court House, or Vineland. At our main campus in Pomona, Bacharach has a Cardiac Rehab Program open to individuals after heart attack, stent implantation, bypass or angina. RNS has generously funded the Cardiac Rehab Program – buying exercise equipment, an EECP table, and three patient transportation vans to ferry needy patients to and from cardiac rehab. Even the monitors patients wear while exercising were purchased through the generous gift of RNS. Other outpatient services at Bacharach include psychology, neuropsychology, speech and language therapy, PT and OT, and sleep and neurodiagnostics testing. Sleep apnea is a dangerous condition closely related to high blood pressure and obesity, and Bacharach’s newly completed, eight-bed unit sets the standard for excellence in sleep testing. Located across from the main campus on Jimmie Leeds Road in Pomona, the new Bacharach Institute for Rehabilitation Sleep Center offers flat screen TV, luxurious appointments, a shower in every room, continental breakfast and highly trained staff of specialists under the leadership of a sleep boarded neurologist. Few rehabilitation hospitals offer both Level One Acute rehabilitation and SubAcute Level Two rehabilitation in the same location. Our subacute, Renaissance Pavilion, has the highest ratings in Atlantic County. It has 29 beds and is specifically geared for patients after joint replacement therapy. Our acute rehab hospital, Bacharach Institute for Rehabilitation, is unequalled in the region, with 10 CARF accreditations for rehab programs, as well as the gold seal from the Joint Commission. From scope of services, to convenience to excellence, it would be hard to find a similar specialty hospital either near or far that offered so much in rehabilitation care. Mary Joyce Perskie Vice President for Marketing and Business Development Cape Regional Medical Center continues to appreciate the hard work and dedication of the many members of the Ruth Newman Shapiro Cancer and Heart Fund. Your on-going support to the Thomas and Claire Brodesser, Jr. Cancer Center and the purchase of our Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) technology is affording many cancer patients in Cape May County the advantage of receiving sophisticated cancer services close to home. In May 2009, Cape Radiology, an affiliate of Cape Regional Medical Center, added state-of-the-art digital mammography in the fight against breast cancer. There are many advantages to a digital system including: • Digital mammography provides physicians with clear and precise digital images, rather than images on x-ray film. • The system provides the largest field of view currently available; this can be extremely helpful for precision imaging of patients with diverse shapes and sizes. • The images are clear and easy to read and offer excellent views of the breast, especially near the skin line, chest wall, and in women with diverse breast tissue types. • The digital image is available in ten seconds, eliminating the wait for traditional films to be developed. may www.rnscancerandheartfund.org 2010 FROM THE EXPERTS In September 2009, the Society of Chest Pain Centers recognized Cape Regional Medical Center as an Accredited Chest Pain Center. The goal of the Chest Pain Center is to significantly reduce the mortality rate of patients with chest pain by meeting or exceeding the extremely high standards established by the Society. Cape Regional Medical Center demonstrated our expertise and commitment to high quality care of chest pain patients by meeting or exceeding the Society’s stringent criteria as evident by an on-site evaluation by a Society review team. Only 500 hospitals in the United States have achieved the Society’s Chest Pain Center accreditation. This accreditation is another step in our continuing efforts to provide the highest quality of care to our patients. We are all very proud of the exceptional care provided by the exceptional people at Cape Regional Medical Center. The Medical Center has continued to grow to meet the needs of our community and we are grateful to RNS for partnering with us and providing financial support to help with the capital purchases of new technology. Cape Regional Medical Center is committed to supporting the tremendous work of RNS throughout the year by providing volunteers for their various fund-raising events. The annual holiday bake sale sponsored by the Volunteer Department at Cape Regional Medical Center and Cape May County Sturdy Bank raised over $940 for the benefit of RNS. Cape Regional Medical Center continues to share the great news of RNS to our constituency in our effort to bring greater awareness in Cape May County. Cape Regional Medical Center is an affiliate of Penn Medicine. Our Cancer Center together with the Penn Cancer Network is committed to providing the best possible cancer treatment available to our patients. Cape Regional is also a member of the Penn Medicine Cardiac Network. This affiliation provides residents with physicians from the Penn Presbyterian Medical Center Heart team, working in tandem with the patient’s local cardiologist, to provide them the best in cardiac care. To learn more about Cape Regional Medical Center’s Radiation Oncology services at the Thomas and Claire Brodesser, Jr. Cancer Center, please call 609-463-2298. Back from left to right Michael Clark, Sturdy Savings Bank, and Julie Paolella, Cape Regional’s Director of Volunteer Services Dear Friends and Colleagues, It is my great privilege to let you know that President Barack Obama and Commerce Secretary Gary Locke have named AtlantiCare a recipient of the 2009 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. The prestigious Baldrige Award is only given to a handful of businesses in the country each year judged to be outstanding in several categories, including leadership, customer focus, and quality results. This year, only five organizations were recognized, and we are one of only two healthcare organizations who received this honor. This recognition is extremely meaningful for AtlantiCare because if affirms our 22-year quest for excellence, involving the extraordinary vision, commitment and hard work of our trustees, our leadership team, our staff, our physicians, our volunteers, and our community. You can be proud to know how deeply and sincerely this organization cares about improving the quality of life in our region. The Baldrige Award reinforces what I believe our patients and customers already know—that AtlantiCare is truly committed to building a healthy community. Baldrige Award winners have the opportunity and the responsibility of sharing our performance excellence strategies with other organizations in the country. We are looking forward to acting as mentors and role models to others who aspire to offer the highest quality of care and service to their patients and customers. We will formally accept the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award during a ceremony in Washington, D.C., in 2010. The receipt of this award is not the end of our quality journey. In many ways it is just the beginning. We will celebrate for sure, but then we’ll get right back to improving the quality of care and service we provide for this community. Thank you for your support and for your role in this extraordinary accomplishment. This year’s Kay Tongue award winner is also the consummate RNS Volunteer. She is always there whenever anything needs to be done, quietly answering the call. Never too busy, too early, too late, too difficult, or too tired. you know it will be done quietly, without fanfare, and, of course, done well. RNS is very fortunate to have this incredible lady giving her heart and soul to our all-volunteer organization, since the day she came on the Board, in 1988. We love and honor you, Elizabeth Greenberg. (L) Lois Braithwaite and Janet Leavy for the Board of Directors of RNS Elizabeth Greenberg Spotlight The RNS Board is a group of dedicated, hard working women. The old quote “there’s one in every crowd” rings true with this Board. Terry Calvi’s “I’ll do it” rang loud and clear when RNS asked for a Show House chair. And, what a fabulous, Terry Calvi efficient, pleasant and delight she is to work with. Her smile is bright, her energy catching, her words soft and her dedication sincere. I think we should make her chair for life! Terry, all of us thank you, from our Board to our volunteers, designers to their workmen, and the visitors who make it all worthwhile. For such a small donation, you can rest assured in knowing each and every dollar counts in the fight against this terrible disease. We are very thankful for our generous vendors who allowed these cards to be distributed and displayed. We also thank everyone who gave $1.00 for this campaign and made a difference! Once again, Bernie Robbins Fine Jewelers was our Presenting Sponsor and generously donated a $2,000.00 Judith Leiber black evening bag for our raffle. Bernie Robbins Fine Jewelers is our 007! The “Bond” that helps to make this fundraiser a winning game. Congratulations to Janet Leavy, an RNS Board Member for buying the winning ticket. A special thanks to Accents, The Perfect Accessory. From Vera Bradley credit card holders for everyone who came, to the overwhelming number of the most desirable handbags donated for bidding, Accents has definitely helped to make this affair a continued success. As always, Chic Shoes and Sandra and Roy’s were major players. Your continued support is appreciated. Each year Boscov’s Cosmetics Department donates a beautiful gift basket. This year the basket, worth $500.00, was won by me, Joanne Kenny, an RNS Board Member!! Most sincere thanks to Mazzeo’s Fruit and Produce, Northfield, and Edible Arrangements, of Somers Point. Both donated, for the second year, gorgeous, large, floral-looking fruit baskets. They were exciting and delicious prizes. Thanks loads! Our newest sponsor, Lesley Levin of Lesley L, who is the niece of Rose Newman, not only donated several handbags, but also offered a 50% off coupon to her store for every ‘gently’ used handbag donated. Wow! Did she get a lot of bags! Welcome aboard. A special last minute feature was sent by DKNY - The Walk. They did not have a handbag to donate but still wanted to support RNS, so they sent a new item, a “Cubbie.” Their model, Joanne, demonstrated how to wear this Wrap, thirteen different ways and also gave us one to donate as a door prize. A second raffle, with a one-of-a-kind, red satin handbag, made especially for RNS by Sheila Weiss, was won by Muriel Elliot. A vintage golf bag from Atlantic City Country Club, a large orchid from Waldor Orchids and a two-hour consultation from John Kelly, one of our Show House designers, were added additions this year. Each table was graced with beautiful orchids from Waldor Orchids that were donated by The Stuart & Estelle Price Foundation. Everyone went home with Mary Kay Cosmetic items donated by Charlotte Jackson of Somers Point. Friendly bidding competition was the “name of the game” on our very large selection of new and gently used designer handbags. Much fun was had by all, especially the high speed shopping for bargains, in our $15.00 room. There were so many bags to choose from that even “floor” shopping was fun. Our sincerest appreciation, to all the stores and individuals, who very generously donated to this fun day! Please, when shopping, patronize these stores who continue to “Make a Difference” in our communities. Special thanks from the Bag Ladies Committee to everyone who helped with everything from donations, mailings, setup, pickup, selling raffles, check out, and all the other jobs too numerous to mention. Our dedicated and hard working members are ever tireless when it comes to fundraising and helping others. We were able to serve our customers for four weeks of the holiday season wrapping gifts large and small. Some of them were so large that it took two of us to handle the box and two of us to rip the paper. As the weeks approached Christmas we became busier and busier. We even ran out of many sizes of boxes and beautiful papers. Linda Kolman wrapping Michelle Bronkesh wrappping Most of our board members and many of our regular members worked several shifts to get the job done. Many of them brought friends and relatives who are not members but have been with us for many seasons. We were glad to initiate some new workers as well. Their talents were obvious as the clever variety of beautiful packages were lifted over the counter to pleased and delighted customers. Christmas eve saw long lines waiting to have their last minute gifts wrapped even after the mall closed. Our last customer was a musician, Jamel Washington, from Manhattan whose mother lives in Atlantic City. He returned three times and waited patiently until all his family and girlfriend had beautifully wrapped packages to go under the tree. paper with help Jean Lawless measuring Charles d, ban hus from her Thanks to Diane Lennon and Franca Dowe for your help; you were both terrific!
