Lucy Neatby is a world-renowned knitwear designer, handknitting instructor, yarn designer and former Merchant Navy
Officer. She is widely acclaimed for her “Knitters’ Companion” instructional DVD series. Lucy’s company, Tradewind
Knitwear Designs, includes her instruction, designs and her Celestial and Cat’s Pajamas lines of hand-dyed yarns.

Workshops
Scarf Trio: Mirror M irror, Sea Lettuce, and Falling Leaves
Saturday, April 9 (9am-4pm)
New Art Center // 6 hour class // Intermediate
In practice yarn, sample all three of these designs and take a close look at all the
techniques used. Over the course of the day, Lucy will guide you through yarn
and needle selection for each project and then give instruction in the many and
various techniques involved in each project: I-cord cast-on, elegant increases, Modified Conventional Bind-off (which
may revolutionize your life), picots, short-rows, working from the right needle to the left (a.k.a. knitting-back backwards),
Provisional Crochet cast-on, two-colour double knitting and more! Mirror Mirror uses double knitting to combine
contrasting yarns in a reversible chequerboard pattern; Falling Leaves is an elegant reversible design based on a
repeating texture pattern; Sea Lettuce uses short rows to create a stylish ruffled scarf edged with picots.
Supplies –
• Two plain (not variegated) contrasting colours in Sport or Worsted weight
• Circular or straight needles in a size to suit your yarn
• Scissors
• Crochet hook
• Blunt darning needles

Short Row Wizardry (Part A)
Sunday, April 10, (9 am-12 noon)
New Art Center // 3 hour class // Advanced Beginners upwards
A practical look at short rows and their many applications to better tailor your knitting. Try
unwrapped, wrapped, yarnover and Japanese short rows and compare their merits. Short rows in
Garter stitch and making a mitered corner. Planning to improve fit and finish by planning your own shapings for bulgy
bits. Conversion of doostep shoulder directions to short rows.
Supplies −
• 20g Light coloured Worsted weight yarn or thicker (giving a gauge of 4-5 st per inch) in two colours
• At least two sets of 5 appropriately sized dpns, 4.5-5 mm/US# 7-8
• Usual knitting paraphernalia
• Scraps of yarn for markers or coil-less pins or safety pins
Homework − Using Worsted weight yarn or thicker (giving a gauge of 4-5 st per inch) in a solid light colour, and
appropriately sized dpns, 4.5- 5 mm/US 7-8. Cut off yarn from each swatch, leave stitches on a spare dp needle (ideally)
or holder.
Swatches 1, 2, 3 and 5 - Cast on 20 sts. Knit 4 rows (Garter stitch), then knit 1 row, purl 1 row (Stocking stitch).
Swatch 4 - Cast on 34 sts. Knit 4 rows (Garter stitch), then knit 1 row, purl 1 row (Stocking stitch).
Diamond Beaded Bracelet
Sunday Afternoon, April 10 (1-4 pm)
New Art Center // 3 hour class // Experienced Beginner Upwards
Try a number of beading techniques including tricks and tips for threading pre-strung beads and
handling tiny needles whilst making an attractive bracelet. The bracelet will be well on its way to
completion by the end of class.
Supplies −
• A pair of dpns in size 1.25mm (US # 0000). (You don’t require a full set of 4 or 5 needles.)
• Please don’t forget your reading glasses!!!!!
You may purchase these 1.25mm/ 0000 needles from Lucy at the workshop IF you note that on the registration form.

Venus Rising Cardigan
Monday-Tuesday, April 11-12, (9 am-4 pm each day)

The Venus Rising Cardigan is a fascinating one-piece, sideways-knit construction
which involves a number of sophisticated techniques to give a superb fit for all
sizes and figures. It is both interesting to knit, yet not complex, and due to the
needle size it is speedy and very slick to finish. All of the techniques will be practiced on a short-sleeved
miniature version of the cardigan.
We will use the Navaho knitting technique to create a triple strand yarn from a single ball and how to
exploit this for either colour purity or blending. Beginning at the right sleeve cuff and using the one long
circular needle method (or dpns if preferred) we will work the sleeve using uniform paired increases and
running yarn markers and create a sleeve head with short-rows in the round (by either the Japanese or
wrapped methods).
Once the sleeve is completed we will make a two needle tubular cast-on for the side ‘seam’, smoothly
incorporate the sleeve and then shape the body using short rows and incorporate bust (optional on a
baby garment), shoulder and hip shapings. Marker yarns will be used extensively to allow for easy
matching of the second side. Provision for the front and back neck openings will be made with waste
yarn before reversing the shapings to create the left side. Waste yarns will be used to hold the stitches on
the left side ‘seam’ for subsequent grafting.
The central waste yarns will be removed to allow for the creation of the back of neck detail and then the
front band and buttonholes applied.

One ball 150g Kauni yarn (100g = 400m) (approx $20).
Two 6.5 mm (US#10.5) circular needles 80cm or longer.
Two 8 mm (US #11) circular needles 80 cm or longer.
20g Chunky weight waste yarn (in a solid bright colour).
10g of finer scrap yarn to use as markers
Scissors, darning needles and usual knitting paraphernalia.
Homework − A swatch will be required. Lucy will send directions once people have signed up.

All registrations will be processed in the order received and priority will be given to guild members who submit their
registrations by February 8. After February 8 we will begin processing registrations from non-guild members.
General Information
Location: The New Art Center is located in Newtonville, MA at 61 Washington Park, just off Walnut Street and very
close to the Star Market/Shaw’s that sits over the Mass Turnpike. Directions are available at

Lunch: Lunch is at your own expense. There are several sandwich shops within walking distance of the New Art Center,
or you can bring your own.
Cancellation Policy: Sorry, we can’t do refunds once you’ve been confirmed in a class, but we will keep a waiting list
of those wanting to participate and will pass the names along, should you not be able to attend. Then, you are
responsible for finding a replacement and working out financial details with them on your own. We cannot manage
substitutions for you.
Saturday Night Supper with Lucy: Open to all guild members and any workshop participants. An opportunity to
informally, meet, and chat with your old and new friends and Lucy. $15 per person payable at dinner, which is held at
LeAnne’s house beginning at about 4:30 pm. (A mile from the workshop location). Please RSVP on the registration form.
