Somers, Vicki Prusnofsky as a recipient of the Julian Y. Bernstein Distinguished Service
Award.
Julian Bernstein was a well-known and admired leader in the Westchester Jewish Community. His
visionary leadership, guidance and friendship remain an inspiration to us all. The recipients of this award
and the organizations they serve follow in his legacy as they continue to strengthen our community.
The Award Ceremony will take place On Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at 7:30pm at the Jewish
Community Center of Harrison. Admission is free and everyone is welcome.

A Message from the President
Spring at HCS means time to clean up and clean out. Sisterhood had taken on the job of beautifying the outside of our synagogue. We have a large television that needs to be disposed of. (Any volunteers?) Somers bulk pick-­‐up does not take electronics. We now have a new flat-­‐screen TV to host Saturday movie night, which begins May 10th at 6:30. Rabbi Fred will surprise us with a wonderful film. May 18th is the last day of Hebrew School and moving-­‐up day. Our Annual Congregational Meeting is also May 18th. All families should send at least one representative. This is the time where we review the events of the past year and plan for next year. Brunch will be served. Get involved, join a committee. You don’t know how good you will feel. Ask anyone of our volunteers who keep this synagogue running. Check the new directory for their names. Remember, it is a mitzvah to sponsor a Kiddush during our Saturday morning Shabbat service. I am creating a new form that will be mailed out to make the process easier. Somers Bagels supplies the food. You contribute the donation of $54. You can celebrate a birthday, anniversary or the Yartzeit of a loved one. I hope to see you soon. Shalom! Mary Wolchan 6

A Message from the Rabbi
Memorial-Independence Day
I am writing this in Eilat, walking distance from Jordan and Egypt, a stone’s throw away from Saudi Arabia.
Right now we are in the middle of the Pesach holiday, the biggest holiday of the year in Israel, in terms of
family vacations. Eilat is filled with Israeli families instead of the usual plethora of French and American
tourists that come here during the winter months. With all its myriad of problems, Israel is a sea of
tranquility when compared with its neighbors. The Arab spring, to put it mildly, has had mixed results.
Egypt’s experiment with democracy appears to be rapidly coming to an end with a new military strong-man
taking over from the old one. Ironically, in the short term this has worked in Israel’s favor since the new
military leadership has closed Egypt’s border with Gaza and filled in the smugglers’ tunnels. The ruling
family of Saudi Arabia is above all else concentrating on one topic - maintaining its one-family rule.
Privately, it is well aware of the importance of Israel as one of its few defenses against the radical Shiites
who not only control Iran but who inhabit S. Arabia’s eastern (oil-rich) provinces. Jordan is barely keepings
its head above water under the weight of over a million Syrian refugees. Syria and, to a great degree
Lebanon, suffer under the cruelest of civil wars. There are frequent bombings in Beirut in the area of the
city ruled by Hamas, hundreds if not thousands of Hamas members have lost their lives fighting to keep
Assad in power. Syria itself no longer exists as a unified country and the cruelty and brutality of its civil war
goes on.
Meanwhile, Israel is celebrating. The economy continues to boom even while the supposedly indispensable
Stanley Fischer left his chairmanship of the Bank of Israel and became the Vice Chair of the Federal Reserve
Bank. Anyone who kept their money in Shekels instead of Dollars has reaped a windfall profit over the last
year, although that also means that Israel is no longer a cheap destination for tourists. Jobs are plentiful,
the Knesset has passed laws that are starting to limit the power of Israel’s economic oligarchies, the
infrastructure of the country is continually being improved with new rail lines and improved highways,
universal pre-school was adopted for the whole country three years ago. More and more of the ultraorthodox and Israeli Arab populations (Israel’s economic underclasses) are being compelled either legally or
for practical reasons to participate more fully in Israeli society and even to limit the size of their families. In
short, in all the areas that America is failing, Israel is succeeding.
By the time you are reading this, the twin Israeli holidays of Memorial Day and Independence day will be
upon us. Israel celebrates its independence day on the anniversary of its declaration in 1948. It’s
leadership had the great good sense to schedule its memorial day for the day before. That way, one can
never forget the price that had to be paid to gain that independence. But, perhaps more importantly,
Israelis understand that paying that price is not over. Every generation has had to fight to maintain Israel’s
continued existence. The parents of each succeeding generation has always wondered whether their kids
were up to the task. I well remember being here for the last war in Lebanon against Hizballah; the last two
wars in Gaza against Hamas. I also remember the shaggy-haired, tattooed and pierced hedonists of Tel
Aviv, the knit-kippah orthodox, the Ethiopian and Russian immigrants putting on their uniforms, showing up
for their reserve units and disproving the doubts of their worried parents. The irony of Israel is that it truly
is an Eretz Nehederet, an “amazing country,” but every generation for over a hundred years has had to pay
a price to keep it alive. Given the current situation, I doubt that this will change in the foreseeable future.
But when each generation’s turn comes, I am confident that they too will pay whatever price needs to be
paid to preserve the country.

In the next few weeks, Hebrew School will be
coming to a close. It has been a glorious
year. Our students are engaged and we had
some of the best teachers ever.
I am excited that many of our long time staff
will be returning. Sara Doar and Beth
Whipple are motivated to return to a new
group of students to work with. Jess
Sampson, a teen teacher, will be attending
college locally. Rose Rayner and Hannah
Most, who I taught at HCS years ago, will be
returning through their senior year of high
school.
Please remember that while school may be
out of session, services will still be going on
weekly. First Friday potluck and all the rest
are Saturdays. It would be especially exciting
for the students to attend the three Bnei
Mitzvahs occurring in June and July. Our
students work hard to learn the material and
I think you will be very impressed
I look forward to the beginning stages of
planning next year with all of you in mind.

Highlights from the March 2014HCS Board Meetings
The board invited Chief Burpee and Chief Driscoll to speak with teachers and students about safety. They also made a presentation to the board to offer suggestions on improving security and safety measures. A Safety Committee has been formed to address possible changes. Chief Driscoll mentioned that prescription drugs no longer needed may be dropped off at the Somers Police Dept. behind the Teen Center from Mon.-­‐Fri., 9am-­‐5pm. Please notice our new enlarged bulletin board in the front hall. There’s plenty of room, now, for our notices and photos. Enjoy! The Purim Carnival was a big success. Lots of people attended from tots to grandparents, and a good time was had by all. Please join us for the Spring Clean Up on April 27. We’ll have snacks to keep our energy going. In no time, with everyone’s help, we can spruce up our grounds and be ready for spring. On May 18 we will have our annual Congregational Meeting.
