Neighbourhoods
A.- Manuel Montt street. Take the
subway and get off at the Manuel Montt
station. Several bars and restaurants area
are open until late hours of the evening
and onto the early morning hours too.

B.- Suecia avenue is a popular spot for
foreigners; many of the bars, like Irish and
Boston style pubs, are specifically
designed to attract foreign customers. The
bars and nightclubs are often more
upscale than Bellavista and are not as
crowded. Suecia avenue offers many
nightclubs and is considered one of the
best places for a night of salsa dancing.
C.- Barrio Bellavista at night is
Santiago's liveliest neighborhood. The
bars are generally inexpensive and the
district boasts dance clubs of many
genres, including salsa and techno.
Restaurants range from cheap pizza to
fine French cuisine. Bellavista's main
street, Pío Nono, is an attraction in itself.
Patio Bellavista is a beautiful walk with
restaurants, ice-creams and souvenirs.
Street vendors have colorful booths along
the sidewalks. They offer anything from
paintings and souvenirs to kebobs and
bamboo saxophones. Pío Nono is very
crowded on weekends, so beware of
pickpockets.
To get to Bellavista, take the metro to the
Baquedano Station or take a bus to Plaza
Italia. Follow Pío Nono north across the
Mapocho River. After a few blocks, you
will know when you are in Bellavista.
Money
The official currency is the Chilean Peso
(CLP), which uses the confusing symbol
for USD ($). Over the last few years, the
rate of inflation has been around 2 to 3%.
The exchange rate in May 2007 was
about 1 USD = 510 CLP, 1 euro = 730
CLP (December 2009).
Spending Money: The best way is
drawing cash (pesos) with your money or
credit cards from automated tellers
marked with the Cirrus, Plus or Maestro
symbol in all major cities - know your PIN!
You have to count of paying a fee (find
out from your bank before you leave).
Otherwise, take travellers' cheques and
cash in US dollars (in a money belt) and
exchange money only in official places
(never in the street) or banks (usually
worse rates, and only open from 9-2.)
Santiago has the best currency
conversion rates; several exchange
places are located on Agustinas between
Ahumada and Bandera (open Mon-Fri 97, Sat morning), as well as near Manuel
Montt, Pedro de Valdivia, and Los Leones
Metro stations.
Banks and ATM availability
All major cities and many smaller towns
with a significant tourist economy have
ATMs. Some banks, however, charge
rather exorbitant fees for international
withdrawals, and per-day withdrawal limits
are usually around US$300. Banks are
open to public Monday through Friday,
from 9.00 to 13:30.
The AmEx office in Isidora Goyenechea
3621, piso 10, Las Condes, Ph. 3506700 ,
Mon-Fri 9.30 a.m. - 5 p.m., is only worth
the trip if you have large amounts in
AmEx travellers cheques to convert. On
the weekend, the larger hotels exchange
money, too, but at a bad rate.
