Human Error Publishing welcomes you
to the Greenfield Annual Word Festival
Having something to say, having a story to tell,
having the courage to say it… standing up and
expressing yourself is what the Greenfield Annual
Word Festival (GAWF) is about.
Here in Greenfield, MA, two great festivals – the
Greenfield Annual Word Festival and the Brick and
Mortar International Video Art Festival – share
the weekend, giving visitors and local audiences a
chance to enjoy international visual expression and
words crafted by poets, spoken word artists, and
writers from all over New England and New York.
GAWF presents young and old writers, from those
just finding their voice to well-seasoned authors who
have published many books, won awards, been
on tours, and make their living from their craft of
writing and performing.
Take your time. These two festivals are set up so
that you can enjoy walking around Greenfield, meeting new and old friends, and taking in the creative
muse being expressed in words and visual art. To
really experience what each of these festivals has
to offer, you need to walk around and venture into
the many different venues. Take a break and enjoy
some food with friends, and then head out again,
for this is an all-day and into-the-evening experience.
I also encourage you to support the venues that
are hosting the festival – today and throughout the
year. Buy coffee, lunch or dinner, and check out
what they have to offer. Help us to thank them for
their kind support of the festival.
This year, Human Error Publishing is working with
The Literacy Project to put on the festival, as a
benefit for The Literacy Project. I hope that you will
donate to The Literacy Project and help fund the
great services they offer in our community.
I would like to thank The Literacy Project’s volunteers, staff and supporters who put in valuable time
and resources to make this festival happen. Working
together, we have put Greenfield on the literary map
with an Annual Festival that has doubled in size
since last year.
To all the writers who are participating: thank you,
thank you! Without you, we wouldn’t have a
festival. It is an honor to have you take part in this
event.
Lastly, enjoy! You will be hard-pressed to decide
which venues to go to, for all of them have amazing
talent. If you find one venue crowded, there is
another very close by. We are fortunate to have so
much talent in one place.
Thank you for supporting this festival with your
presence and donations.
A Note from The Literacy Project’s Executive Director
It is my great honor to welcome you to the 2nd Greenfield Annual Word Festival (GAWF). The Literacy
Project is proud to participate in this event, and we gratefully acknowledge the support of all our sponsors.
The Literacy Project offers free adult literacy and GED classes at five locations in western Massachusetts:
Greenfield, Amherst, Northampton, Orange, and Ware. Approximately 500 students each year work
with us to build skills in reading, writing, math, and computers. We help our students prepare for college,
train for a job, or meet more personal goals, like discovering the joy of reading and the power of telling
their own stories.
Becoming a writer, learning to read, earning a GED – all of these accomplishments bring with them power
and new freedoms.
[Getting my GED] was so amazing. I finally had this piece of paper that says,
“Now you have the choice” and you can do whatever you wanted. I have freedom.
I mean, no matter what else, I have a freedom to use my mind and to learn
whatever I want – and that’s a big freedom.
As you wander the venues and listen to today’s writers, I invite you to reflect on what the gift of literacy
means to you and the freedoms it allows you to enjoy. Please consider making a donation to support
adult literacy in the Pioneer Valley. Look for donation envelopes at each venue, or donate on-line
at www.literacyproject.org.
Warmly,
Paul Richmond
