January, 2014
January, 2014 Looking forward, looking back…. Welcome to the first issue of the Running Board for 2014. For the “new” masthead, your editor has turned the clock back more than a decade (with the help of our faithful Historian, Kathy Hollis) to find an earlier version. While we really don’t need to reinvent the Running Board, reaching back in time has provided a fresh look with strong ties to our earlier years – similar to our shared mission in restoring and preserving our favorite automobiles. So there you have it – along with lots of shiny new content thanks to our new officers, regular contributors and usual selection of great events we’re off to another fun year in the Naples-Marco Island Region. After all, if we’re not having fun, why are we here? NOTE: If you wish to receive this newsletter by email, please send a note to [email protected] and you can help your Club save money & get it sooner! 1 This is the Official Publication of Table of Contents Running Board Auction Reminder 10 Classified Ads 9 Editor’s notes 1 Events 5 General Meeting Schedule 2 History 6 Judging School 3 Legislative News (held for Feb.) Please fill out this form as it is the only way we have of knowing your latest address, phone, cars and correct email. This info does not get sent to anyone other than club members in the '14 Roster. 2 President’s Page: Hello fellow members! I would like to wish a belated Season’s Greetings to everyone. Now that you’re back in Southwest Florida you can thaw out a little from the cold! I hope all your travels during this past holiday season were pleasant and that you enjoyed yourselves. We have new tour directors, Jorge and Orte Gil. They have planned a new event for us on Jan. 18th, a visit to see the world famous Lipizzan Stallions in a practice session. It should be fun and exciting, something really different. For more information the Gils can be reached at 954-684-2410 or email them at [email protected]. Dick Reynolds has announced that we have some new members who recently joined our club. Please make all of them feel welcome! I’m looking forward to seeing everyone at our General Meeting at 7:00PM on Jan. 16th when we will have a guest speaker and Hank will have his auction, or as some members call it, “Hank’s Antique Road Show Auction”. Keep the shiny side up, Harry J. Seluga, President JUDGES SCHOOL TO BE HELD Judges’ school will take place at 1:00 PM January 25, 2014 at 4585 Progress Ave..Unit 1-3. Turn off Livingston Rd. at the Budweiser plant onto Progress. The garage is located on the right hand side, turn into the driveway right after the white mailboxes. We encourage all members to learn how to judge antique cars. The event is especially useful to anyone considering buying an antique or used car. We need 45 judges to run the Depot Show on March 22, 20014 We currently estimate that we are short judges to fill all spots. Volunteers should call Mike Keeler or email [email protected] Please Note: Time has been moved to the afternoon better lighting for the slide show. Thanks in advance, Roger Donald, Judging School 3 Volunteer Vehicle by Stan Goodman Everybody loves a parade! On Dec. 3rd a number of our members, thirteen to be exact, joined in the Chanukkah festivities at the Chabad Jewish Center in Naples. Along with a number of other exotic cars we paraded, with lighted Menorahs (candelabras) displayed on each car, down US 41, along 5th Avenue, down 3rd Street, and then through old Naples back to the Center. Tagging along with us, and clearing the intersections of all cross traffic, was a sizeable detachment of police vehicles. Upon seeing the parade, pedestrians and restaurant patrons everywhere stopped to look at us. It was amazing to see all the onlookers waving and taking pictures with their cellphones, cameras, and even I-Pads. Upon our return we were treated to the traditional delicious potato latkes with applesauce, and chocolate donuts. This event brought to our club much good will and publicity. I wish to personally thank all our members who supported this celebration. A good deed indeed! I am also very happy to report that our application for the 2016 Winter National Meet has now been formally accepted. This was a formality, but still it’s nice to know that our efforts haven’t been in vain. I recently received a very pleasant phone call from Tom Cox, President of AACA, congratulating us, and offering whatever assistance we might need. He, along with many other AACA executives are very much looking forward to joining us in SW Florida in 2016. This will be the first National event ever held down here. As an interesting aside, he mentioned that it has been the experience of other Regions who have held a National Meet that their membership had increased by up to 20 new members as a result. Having this approval, I will now proceed to formalize arrangements with Coconut Point Mall, the Hyatt Coconut Point Regency (our host hotel), as well as some other local hotels. At our January meeting we are expecting one or two guests from the Melbourne, Florida Region, who have previously hosted National Meets. They will speak about their experiences, and answer any questions you might have. As Hank will also be holding our auction night in January, we would like to start this meeting at 7:00pm, so please plan to come a little earlier than usual for this occasion. I wish everyone a very Happy and Healthy New Year! Stan 4 Schedule of AACA and Area Classic Car Events If anyone has an event to be scheduled please contact me at [email protected] . At our November 21st General Meeting, it was decided that the club will collect nonperishable food items as well as personal hygiene products, (soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes) for the students of Naples junior and senior public schools who are in need. Some of them go home on the weekends and holidays and have little to eat. Whatever you can spare would be appreciated. You can bring the items to the monthly general meetings, or to the breakfast meetings. Barbara Donald and I will be collecting the items and Barbara will take them to the schools. Helen Goodman Naples-Marco Region History The January, 1991 issue of the Running Board contains information about activities for the coming year. The club had enrolled 37 new members in 1990 making a total membership of 126. 46 of those members had paid their dues for 1991. Members were asked to get their dues paid for the new year. [some things never change! ed.] The Depot Show was to be held Saturday, March 30, 1991 and the grounds and rooms in the depot had been reserved from 7a.m. to 6 p.m. that date. They would have music by Sam Triplett’s Bobby Soxxers. The Naples High School Band Boosters would run concessions and receive those proceeds plus 20% of the gate. They were hoping for 100 to 150 cars. Jim Tackett (the new president for 1991) announced that he is initiating a new segment into the monthly meetings called “Sounding Your Horn”. This 10 minute period would give members an opportunity to present ideas, suggestions, or events that they would like to have considered. Some possibilities mentioned were – a picnic to which they would invite neighboring car clubs A two day rodeo at the “Y” in Marco Island A progressive breakfast in conjunction with the Farewell Party The group also discussed the upcoming Mall Car Show in February. Keith Fisher stated that the club would receive $35 for each car displayed at the show. The club was attempting to have this increased to $50 next year. The January newsletter ended with a “Food for Thought” from Indira Gandhi: There are two kinds of people in the world: Those who do work Those who take the credit My grandfather always said, “Try to be in the first group; There’s less competition there.” Kathy Hollis, Historian 6 MESSAGE FROM OUR DEPOT SHOW CHAIRMAN Harry Seluga needs help from the membership in obtaining sponsors for our annual Car Show.
