It Cannot be Done Without Them... At New Hope for Kids, we work hard to achieve one of the highest efficacy rates of non-profits in Central Florida. Over 93% of our aggregate revenue goes directly to program services. You may ask, how are we able to consistently accomplish such a high percentage? The most valuable asset New Hope for Kids has is its volunteers. It is only through the tireless efforts of these dedicated people that our programs continue to be a succcess year after year. In 2007, 249 people volunteered their time in one or more the following ways: • Acting as a grief facilitator at the Center for Grieving Children • Helping out with our annual family events • Granting a Wish for a child with a life-threatening illness • Assisting our marketing efforts throughout the community • Participating in important fundraising events • Office assistance Their efforts compiled 7,433 hours of service for the Central Florida community! Testimony of one such volunteer: “To say that New Hope for Kids has been an inspiration to me would be an understatement. When I was ten years old my father died and my brother, grandmother and I started attending group at New Hope for Kids. I gained a lot of different things and did not want to lose that feeling of belonging. So I volunteered with new Hope for Kids until I was sixteen and then attended Grief Facilitator training. I became a Grief Facilitator in August 2007, the week of my sixteenth birthday, and thus far very few things have been as rewarding as helping these kids through their grief. I love New Hope for Kids; I love the kids, the employees, the other volunteers and the whole ideal New hope for Kids works toward. I’ve wanted to do this work for six years and now that I am, I must say nothing has been disappointing. I can not wait to work with New Hope for Kids in the years to come!” - Timmarie Hutchinson NHFK Volunteer hope Wishes for Kids Program New Hope for Kids realizes that hope allows joy to enter into the lives of sick children. Our Wishes for Kids program grants life-enhancing wishes to children, ages 3-18, who have been diagnosed with a life-threatening illness. These children may suffer pain and isolation, and often do not reach adulthood. Receiving a wish is an experience that creates priceless memories for the child and their family. Every wish is considered on a case-by-case basis to ensure that the child’s best interests are met. A physician’s medical acknowledgement verifies the child’s life-threatening illness which determines the eligibility of a child. Making a Difference in Our Community: • 49 Wishes were granted in 2007 • A total of 402 people were served • 32 UCF Cornerstone Teams raised $60,000 collectively to grant 31 wishes • UCF students produced an informational DVD to be used as a tool for training, soliciting donations, recruiting volunteers, marketing and sharing New Hope for Kids Wish stories. • New fundraisers generated include an annual Ruff Ryders Motorcycle Ride for Hope, Timacuan Golf Tournament, Simply Well Fundraiser, Alafaya Dental Services. • Continued fundraisers include those organized by St. Charles Jr. Honor Society, St. Andrews eighth grade class, Golden Steppers, Piecemakers and numerous churches and organizations. • 60% of wish costs were sponsored by the generosity and hard work of Cornerstone teams, community fundraisers and local businesses. • Wishes have included the following items and experiences: cruises, shopping sprees, trips, Conductive Education Center of Orlando, Woodplay of Florida, camps, trikes of all sizes, all-terrain wheelchairs, therapeutic hot tubs, celebrity Meet and Greets, computers and more! Unlike similar programs, New Hope for Kids also provides permanent monthly support groups and family events designed to prevent the isolation and sense of hopelessness that often accompanies grief and illness. This unique aspect of follow-up and continual support allows New Hope for Kids the flexibility to serve as many Central Florida families as possible each year. University of Central Florida Students at Work... S to grant 89 wishes, the teams direct caring attention to each child and give what money cannot - a sense of renewed self-esteem and hope. Through December of 2007, 92 teams comprised of 552 business majors have canvassed the Central Florida area on behalf of children suffering from life-threatening illnesses. Children with life-threatening illnesses often become disconnected from their peers because of limitations and noticeable physical and/ or mental differences. A once-in-alifetime wish celebrated with family, friends and the Cornerstone Team offers a tremendous boost for child and family. ince the fall of 2003, UCF students from the Cornerstone Program have made a huge impact on the New Hope for Kids Wishes for Kids Program. In addition to raising over $180,000 “Princess Victoria and Belle on the Disney cruise ship Team Wish Grantors with Victoria and family The Cornerstone teams take on the exceedingly ambitious task of planning, implementing and fundraising for a wish granting and celebration. They receive handson experience with budgeting, teamwork, media, documentation and working wtih special needs children. Cornerstone is a unique program that has enabled NHFK to grant more wishes and leave a deeper impression on the lives of children with life-threatening illnesses in Central Florida. Wish Director, Rosie Wilder, puts it this way - “The UCF teams add creativity and a personal touch to each wish. They make it six times better than I could alone! I wish every donor could see the light in the eyes of children when they receive their wish. Through continued support and family events, NHFK keeps in touch with families and offers hope and encouragement for as long as they want to remain a part of our New Hope family.” Victoria’s Wish... The UCF Cornerstone Wish Grantors Team hits the top! They put their full efforts into granting Victoria’s wish for a Disney Cruise. They even surprised themselves with the results of their efforts. Their original goal was $3,000, and they far exceeded it by raising $7,500 - the most money ever raised by a team in the five years of partnership with New Hope for Kids and Cornerstone! Wish Grantors faced challenges of scheduling, implementing fundraisers and “stretching” their skills. Their largest fundraiser was a golf tournament. This is an extremely ambitious event for a semester, but they pulled it off, attained 57 players and numerous sponsors. Timacuan Golf and Country Club generously augmented their fundraising efforts by providing an excellent venue for the tournament. The Wish Grantor’s commitment to Victoria and New Hope for Kids did not waiver and truly resulted in a beautiful wish come true. healing Center for Grieving Children The Center for Grieving Children is the only one of its kind in Central Florida. It offers a program of peer group support, activities and positive play that gently guides children ages 3-18 through the grieving process. Grief support is also provided for parents, grandparents and caregivers of the children who attend. The goal of our proven program is to help children help each other face grief as a normal human experience while learning valuable life skills. Children who attend the Grief Program report feeling understood and supported. They gain an enormous sense of relief from being able to discuss their experiences with peers who are going through the same range of feelings and emotions - something they cannot do at school or at home. 239 children were served in the grief program throughout 2007. The 5th annual “Camp Ray of Hope” welcomed 46 children to a very special weekend. It was held at Walt Disney World’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground, giving our adventurous tent-campers an opportunity to explore Animal Kingdom, enjoy an evening campfire and sing-a-long with “Chip and Dale” and build strength for their healing journey. Fundraisers in the community... Donor Appreciation Casino Night In the spirit of generosity, New Hope for Kids donors graciously gave $1,053.33 during an event intended to simply thank them for their continued support throughout the years. What makes New Hope for Kids unique? When a family becomes involved with New Hope for Kids either through the Grief Program or by receiving a Wish, they immediately become a part of the New Hope family. Our services extend much further than granting a Wish and offering grief support groups for a year. New Hope for Kids recognizes the need for support in a variety of ways when one is faced with sickness and death. For this reason, a very important part of New Hope for Kids are the ample opportunities for families to receive help when they need it most. In 2007, New Hope for Kids hosted eight Family Events designed to provide socialization for our Wish families and a place for our Grief families to make new, happy memories. Additionally, the holidays can be a tough time for our families either experiencing them for the first time without their loved one or facing the financial stresses of providing for their family as well as covering burdensome medical bills. For this reason, New Hope for Kids hosts a Thanksgiving Food Drive as well as a Holiday Toy Drive to help lesson the weight of holiday responsibilities. “Aloha Santa!” Holiday Party Halloween Bowl “Summer Kamp” 868 children and 620 adults attended the various Family Events hosted by New Hope for Kids in 2007. Moreover, 101 families were served with the items needed to make a Thanksgiving meal. 144 families were served by the Holiday Toy Drive with over 1,748 presents distributed. 2007 Unaudited Financials Corporate/Individual donations: $242,955.36 Grants/Bequests: $309,297.52 32.20% Program Fees: $ 46,320.00 24.49% Special Events: $268,427.67 27.94% Interest Income: $ 29,920.82 3.11% In-Kind Donations: $187,368.00 16.46% Total Revenues: $960,643.40 100.00% Total Expenses: $771, 543.14 80.32% Total Surplus: $189,100.26 19.68% New Hope for Kids recognizes the need to support the entire family.
