2014 Annual Report
Annual Report | 2014 If you hear a voice within you say ‘you cannot paint,’ then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced. – Vincent Van Gogh CARE FROM THE PRESIDENT To everyone associated with this phenomenal organization, I want to personally offer my gratitude for a very successful 2014! During the past two years, I have had the privilege of serving as President of the Board and it has been time I would not trade. The positive feeling that comes from the association with We Care Arts is one to be treasured. There are a few highlights I’d like to share with you from 2014. As many may be aware, we continue to push the envelope regarding the number of clients we serve with the limited resources available to us. For 2014, we served a total of 1,325 clients, amounting to 23,469 hours. This involved not only the time at We Care Arts facility itself, but nine nursing homes and eleven distinct school systems. In addition to the time we spend with our clients, we have proudly displayed their work at eight additional locations and started eight new programs. While not as exciting to the outside world, We Care Arts obtained the necessary Grants and Funds from The Dayton Foundation, The Spurlino Fund and Virginia Kettering, to repair and secure a portion of our ceiling that was in need of some major attention. It is additional needs such as this, and a much needed security system, that continually push our budget and our reliance on generous donors such as yourselves; going above and beyond our important and primary goal of serving our clients. Our annual fundraisers, grants, and most importantly, our donations from individuals like you, is what keeps our mission alive. The clients of We Care Arts depend on us for so many reasons and we are hopeful that one day we can take care of everyone that comes to our doors or requests our onsite visits. We have come so far over our 30+ years and are looking forward to many more successful years! Thank you for all you do! Your help does not go unnoticed, or unappreciated! Sincerely, Timothy Pittman, President of Board of Trustees “Creativity takes courage. ” – Henri Matisse inspire FROM THE DIRECTOR Friends, I am so happy to send you this report that will highlight the miracles that take place daily in our studio, and throughout our community, thanks to the healing power of art! Over 30 years ago, We Care Arts responded to a need in our community: to provide support to those who were under- and unemployed. Our goal was to give them something constructive to do as they were looking for a full time job. In the beginning, we taught our participants how to sew, knit, crochet, and make items out of wood that they could sell for some extra income during tough times. As the years have passed, our participants come to us with other needs. They are struggling with mental illness, recovering from a catastrophic injury, or have caregivers who want their loved one to be in a creative environment instead of a traditional workshop performing rote tasks day after day. The issues with which our participants come to us have changed, but the art, the support, and the compassion we have for those who call We Care Arts their second home remains the same. Last year, we served over 1,300 people. In addition to the art classes we provide each day at the Berkeley Center, we travel to 16 assisted living centers and memory care facilities, and collaborate with 11 school districts to teach art classes that inspire people to work toward their personal goals. Each day, we witness how potent and restorative the process of making art is to those we serve. As you read this report, you will discover that We Care Arts continues to be an agency where hope and love thrives. We feel blessed to work with these amazing individuals. Please consider this as an invitation to come and visit us soon. Pick up a brush and paint with us. You will be amazed when you see how we change lives by simply providing love, and the opportunity to create. “There is nothing more truly artistic than to love people.” – Vincent Van Gogh create YEAR IN REVIEW We Care Arts accomplished a great deal over the past year and we are pleased to offer the community this report. In 2014, The Board and staff worked diligently to continue to strengthen the foundation on which our programming is built. We worked closely with Wright State University’s Department of Urban Affairs, which sent staff and graduate students to help us craft a comprehensive three-year plan that will guide us throughout 2015 and beyond. Additionally, We Care Arts received a coveted three-year accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitative Facilities (CARF). We continued to fine-tune each of our programs, using their guidelines to assure that the people we serve receive the best services possible from our staff and volunteers. The staff at WCA completed continuing education credits that increased their ability to be responsive to the emotional, physical, and creative needs of our participants. As a result, our programs grew! In 2014, We Care Arts delivered life- transforming art programming for 1,325 individuals, and provided 23,469 hours of service. The ArtWORK program, the cornerstone of our programming, serves clients at the Berkeley Studio in Kettering, St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Fairborn, and Zion Church in Tipp City. Last year, 136 people attended art classes that reinforced life skills, tapped into their innate creativity, and gave them the opportunity to profit from the work they produced. As they created, our staff encouraged their efforts to make changes in their lives that enabled them to attain a level of independence. We are happy to report that 96% of those evaluated achieved their life and art skills goals. We are grateful for the support of the Ohio Arts Council, Montgomery County Human Services levy monies, and your donations that enable us to provide services to those who are not able to pay. Our work with area high school Transition to Work programs is expanding as well. Transition to Work is a state mandated program that teaches young people with disabilities life skills that prepare them socialize for a level of independence after graduation. Thanks to generous support from funders including the Tait and Mathile Foundations, PNC Bank, and money collected through Kettering-Fairmont High School’s Spirit Chain, we collaborated with 11 school districts; providing art classes for 229 students that reinforce the lessons they are learning in the regular classroom. Two years ago, the We Care Arts Board made a commitment to extend art programming to seniors with dementia. Throughout 2014, with funding from organizations including the Maria Anna Brunner Grant Fund, staff traveled to 16 assisted living and day habilitation centers to provide classes for 355 senior adults designed to encourage reminiscence and socialization among the residents. Last year, 52 young people attended art classes at our Tuesday evening and Saturday morning Art Cafés. These drop-in classes offer participants the opportunity to laugh, socialize, and to learn art skills that they can replicate at home for their own enjoyment. We remain dedicated to introducing our participants to new mediums that will offer them the chance to profit from the work they produce, so we added new classes in 2014. Each Monday, people gather to learn how to sew adorable baby bibs and other decorative items. We also offer a polymer class to teach participants how to create jewelry using this versatile clay. In addition to the We Care Arts gift shop and special events, we are finding new ways to promote our clients’ art. With a grant from the Community Foundation for Kettering, we have dedicated a staff person to increasing awareness of the agency using social media including Facebook and Twitter and making our participants art available on Pinterest, Etsy, Amazon, and our on-line gift shop at www.wecarearts.org. A gift from Vectren enabled us to create a system to inventory the art produced and to train participants to help manage the process. We are committed to being good stewards of the gifts we receive to maintain our operations. We established an investment fund to assure resources for the future and continued to hone our accounting system to assure transparency and to make reporting more efficient. Another big undertaking this year was to make essential repairs to our building and to upgrade safety features. The Virginia Kettering Foundation provided the funding necessary to make our attic structurally sound, to add lighting in the parking lot, and to install a remote lock/camera system, which can be accessed from our administrative offices. We are deeply appreciative of the support we have received from the community and remain committed to providing services that bring color back into the lives of people who may have lost hope. Together, we can continue to change disabilities into possibilities through art! support “Life beats down and crushes the soul and art reminds you that you have one” – Stella Adler love WE CARE ARTS VOLUNTEERS As we reflect on another year at We Care Arts, I’m amazed at how much we have grown and how much we have accomplished. Many of these accomplishments are due to the incredible support we receive from our volunteers: from Board members who guide We Care Arts in the right direction to students who work one on one with our clients. In 2014, over 300 volunteers donated 8,053 hours of time and talent that helped We Care Arts to grow and thrive. This year, the Ohio Department of Labor set the value of an hour of volunteerism at $22.55, which means that our volunteers contributed $181,590.00 of in-kind service to the agency. This donation is the equivalent of approximately 10 full-time employees. While this statistic is certainly impressive, we cannot fully measure the benefit of the love and compassion that our volunteers show our clients. 2014 Volunteer Highlight This year, I would like to recognize the staff and volunteers from the Montgomery County Adult Probation Department. In 2014, the department placed dozens of individuals who logged 205 hours helping We Care Arts in a variety of ways, including cleaning the back parking lot, spreading mulch, and much, much more.
