LOVEDAY HOUSE NEWSLETTER MICHAELMAS TERM 2012 House Master Report As term draws to a close and I ponder my newsletter comments I always enjoy taking stock for a moment and considering the last fourteen weeks. They have been as busy as you would expect; in the review of the term at last night’s House Prayers and in the contents of this newsletter you can witness the remarkable breadth of activity which your sons have been engaged in. I often get asked what makes a successful term. Is it the amount of cups, credits or commendations that are won? Is it inversely proportional to the amount of doors and windows broken? Well, for me the answer is neither (although we have had plenty of the former and not many of the latter), but rather it is simply a question of whether it has been a happy term, are the boys trying hard and have they looked after each other? The answer to this for 95% of this term has been a resounding yes. Two key dates for the House next term are the Loveday House play ‘It was the Dog that Died’ by Tom Stoppard running from Tuesday 5th February – Thursday 7th February and the Loveday House Charity Day on Sunday 17th March. A huge thank you to the many of you who contributed to our CHASE Christmas present appeal. We were able to take over a hundred presents to their offices in Godalming the day before term finished…amazing! I would like to wish you a joyous Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year, from my family to yours. Andy ning of term. The song chosen for our entry was the Pentatonix version of ‘Somebody that I used to know’. After three weeks of consecutive day rehearsals after prep, we successfully won the Part Song section of the House Performance, and we won the competition overall thanks to the 4th Form dancers coming second. It was a thrilling but nervy experience being up on stage: the audience really got behind us and that made us feel a little more confident. Thanks to everyone for all their contribution, especially Hebe Westcott and Rachel Hurst for arranging the music and conducting the rehearsals. Ian Lee 4th form Dance Congratulations to all the 4th Form on their win in the House Performance evening. Within their first month at Cranleigh School they have managed to secure one of the most prestigious house trophies and thoroughly enjoyed themselves on performance night. Individual top performances were displayed throughout their dance; special mentions go to both Harry Binnion for his incredible acrobatics and Charlie Floyd with his acting and flair. Aided by the affiliated 4th Form from West, they together achieved second place, losing narrowly to North. However, combined with 1st place in Part-song we won the overall competition! So a ‘well done’ to all the 4th form for their determination and commitment in rehearsals; it paid off! Nice one guys! Jonny & Brad Helen Wareham Competition At the Pat Dixon Woodwind subdivision of the Helen Wareham competition, Dan Evans from the 4th Form House Music Competition played saxophone in the Junior category, while Justin The Loveday boys and the Loveday-West Girls started Browning from the LVI played the clarinet in the Sento prepare for the Part Song right from the very begin- iors. The standard was incredibly high throughout the evening, which the judges acknowledged and commended. Both Loveday performers played very well, but unfortunately neither made it into the top three for their category, mainly due to the consistent quality that all the pupils upheld in their recitals. Overall, the evening was very enjoyable and it was good to hear from some young, talented musicians. Justin Browning Christmas Concert 2012 This year ,there was a great atmosphere in the Speech Hall as all of the major ensembles played in the terms most prestigious concert. Ally Smith, Harry Moore and Ian Lee were all in the Symphony Orchestra with Giorgio Bounous adding to those three for the Strings Orchestra. The Symphonic Wind Band had Ian and Justin Browning with them, and Ian also played in the chapel brass (one of only five musicians). The Concert Band then took to the stage with Eddie Mitchell, Dan Evans and Angus Barrett taking the lead on their clarinets along with Ben Mills, Angus Young, Tom Standen-Jewell and Milo Livesey in the band as well. To finish the show was the Big Band (which included Ben, Milo, Dan, Tom, Ian and myself) who played four songs finishing with “Have yourself a very Merry Christmas”. Altogether it was a great night with a total of 13 Loveday musicians getting involved. Thomas Cooper Helen Wareham: Dashwood Piano Competition Cranleigh’s annual piano competition took place during the second half of the Michaelmas term. From Loveday, Kuziva Ndewere, Ian Lee and myself competed in our respective sections. Although none of us made it through to the main Helen Wareham competition, it was a good fun evening and thoroughly enjoyed by all who played and watched. Angus Barrett Public Speaking For this year’s public speaking we had a strong team consisting of Kuziva , Orlando and myself. Our cho- interested and engaged brilliantly, and I gave the vote of thanks to conclude the proceedings. We were up against strong competition especially Cubitt and West who had some strong speakers. Kuziva was especially impressive and Orlando did well to keep everything flowing: I was able to win the best vote of thanks. It’s fair to say that we were close to Cubitt and could claim an unofficial second place. Thanks to everyone for coming and supporting us and thanks to Ali and Henry for helping organise our team and help with the speeches. Amyn House Challenge The House Challenge is an event in which Loveday have enjoyed a significant amount of success in recent years. This term, a very strong team was put together with Christian Round as captain: he was very well supported by the talented Nat McAleese-Park and Henri Martin with fourth former Henry de Villiers providing a strong performance as the team’s final member. We began the competition with a trouncing of West, tripling their score and went into the next round as bookies’ favourites. After easing past reigning champions North in the semi-finals the Loveday team faced a knife-edge all star final against Cubitt. The match lived up to its billing and ended in a tie after 45 minutes. Fortunately, Loveday were able to pull away dramatically in extra time and rushed to a 50 point advantage to end the competition as champions. Christian Round House Cross Country Competition The IV form House Cross Country was a great success. The conditions were great for running and the course was just 2 miles long. We only had two people in the top ten Freddie Austin in 3rd and me in 7th. The main reason why we were able to achieve a win was the amount of runners in places 20-30. The support from the other years was great and really lifted the runners. I hope we are able to achieve such a great result in future years. Alex H-W Basketball Loveday usually puts in a strong performance in House Basketball, and the Fourth Form this year was no exception. Winning all three of their matches against Cubitt, North and East comfortably it was a sen topic was “Are bankers greedy ?“ which was excel- resounding victory. Special mention should go to Ed lently debated by Kuziva who did the main speech: Cooper who landed three three-pointers as well as Orlando was the chairman and was kept the audience Freddie Austin and Ben Cordingley for general all round performance. Unfortunately the Fifth form basketball team lost to a very tall Cubitt side but even so the likes of Joss Pinnington managed to put a few points on the board. The third and fourth play offs contest saw a successful team effort destroying the North side with help from the great managerial and coordination skills of manager Jack Hart. Not being as strong as usual, the Sixth Form team knew it was going to be a struggle to keep the title. Beating North with relative ease, Loveday came up against a determined Cubitt side in the final and despite many near misses unfortunately lost by a mere 4 points, 1814. Well done everyone, especially Tom Farrelly who scored the majority of our points. Ed Roberts Senior Squash We went into the Senior Squash competition with a strong team, comprising of Will Jay, Milo Maxton, Charlie Gilbert, Jack Scriven, and myself. In the opening round we faced a strong East side, in which the winning team would advance through to the final and the losing team would play for third and fourth position. Much to our delight we beat East in a closely contested encounter, winning 3 out of our five matches. This meant we progressed to the final, where our opponents were Cubitt, containing four of the five first team players. Unfortunately despite our best efforts we lost 5-0, and therefore finished second. Overall the Senior House Squash was a thoroughly enjoyable house event, in which we fulfilled our expectations. Thanks to all who played and supported, and hopefully next year we will be able to better our result. Angus Barrett injury to our star player Mr Kefford. We drew our first game against Cubitt, and then lost to the favourites East. In the last game, a use of the Christmas tree formation helped us come away with a 3-0 victory. The surprise of the evening was seeing Kevwe finally score, after years of waiting. Tom Farrelly House Fives House Fives was one of the first inter-house competitions this year, remaining competitive and contested as ever . The team stood as Will Jay and Jack Scriven, Tom Farrelly and Ed Roberts, as well as Milo and myself. In the first round we faced Cubitt, an opposition who proved worthy winners after winning all three. In the 3rd and 4th playoff we came up against an inexperienced North side that lacked composure, which we soon exploited. Despite us feeling winners in our own right, we finished in a respectable third place. Well done to those involved and if anything the experience will only aid our ‘five’ abilities for next year. Cameron Henderson Riding This term has been a successful one for Loveday on the riding front, with both Fred and me competing at the National Schools Equestrian championships in a Sixth Form Football number of different classes. This was a successful trip As we all know, this is the most important event of the with the school winning three national team titles, with term, and is Fred and I in the winning Open Show jumping team. I always highly also competed in the Open Jumping with style compecompetitive. tition and dressage team competition, and Fred comLoveday went peted in the Individual Advanced show jumping comin as underdogs petition and Open Jumping with style competition. As with the likes of a school we finished in the top ten for each team comEd Roberts and petition apart from one: this made us the most sucNick Kelly in cessful school at the championships. It’s also encourdefence, after aging to see a number of other members of the House an unfortunate learning to ride and riding recreationally these are Richie Round and Liz. Tom Lane er North side. The boys played well with good trys from Ed Cooper and Harry Blevins. First Term At Cranleigh I have thoroughly enjoyed my first term at Cranleigh. I felt that having the team building exercise on the first weekend really helped me settle in, as not only did I get to know the boys in my year in my house a bit better, but also the older members of the school. It was a great day and I think everybody found it fun! Without a doubt, my favourite part of school has been house life. Everybody has been extremely welcoming and this Heavies On paper Loveday’s Heavies A were one of the weaker sides but on the pitch we proved our critics wrong. We won all of our first three matches with an exceptional performance against North who had all A team players. There was great play from the backs with Harris and Forrest showing great variety of play in the backs, both with good kicking games and running. In the final we went out fighting, but in terrible conditions North overpowered us. The score-line does not show how well some of the boys played, with Will Wright particularly outstanding throughout. In the B team, having lost our early matches we went to the third/fourth playoff a bit deflated but counting some great tries by Dan Khalupsky, Giorgio Bounous and Charlie Clayton. We ended up third - it was some amazing play and some exceptional performances from Fred Philips and Ben Mills. Seniors In the seniors A we had strong opposition from the likes of North and East. We played very well but had unlucky defeats to North and has made the house feel like home from day one. An- East. Our last other aspect I have really enjoyed has been the house match was events and competitions, for instance the 4th Form against Cubitt cross country which Loveday won: everyone did there which was tight bit and the support we got from the rest of the house but we were was amazing. Another example has been the house victorious in squash: in my first game I was down but when you this with some hear people shouting and cheering it really lifts you great play by and it helped me to eventually end up the winner, this Tom Farrelly, really gave me a feel of what the house was like. I have Nick Kelly and James Corbishley. We went to the really enjoyed my sport in my first term as well, it has third/fourth playoff in high spirits having already beatbeen a highlight. I was amazed by the amount of open the Cubitt side. This time we again came out on top portunities you get given and all the different things with some good tries by Kay Kay. In the senior Bs we you can try. Overall I think my first term at Cranleigh won all of our games in the group stages and played has been a huge success and I have enjoyed every mi- North in the final. This was a game of great imnute of it! portance to the overall standings of Loveday. In a big Freddie Austin encounter against North the scores ended up equal with some tries from Nathan Thorpe. House Rugby Bill Bathurst Lights The lights were strong this year in both A and B thanks to some strong new Fourth Form and some good Lower Fifth. Both A and B teams won all of their matches easily. In the finals we easily beat a competent East team with Harry Binnion scoring three tries and Freddie Austin scoring a great up and under. In the Bs we also had a strong side and played a weak-
