Pontiacs of CENTRAL CALIFORNIA
October 2015 NEWSLETTER
Hi Folks,
We just got back from a 6000 mile road trip that took me to a
200 acre horse ranch in Michigan for a family reunion. Sheila
flew in and we had a very good time visiting family members,
some of which I had not seen in 40 years. The landscape was
green and the air clean. I paid a low of $2.14 and a high of
$2.69 a gallon for middle grade gas. That's hard to beat.
In talking with Bill T. things are looking pretty good for the
"Toys for Tots" show in November. We need everyone's help
in getting the flyers out.
October is the month we nominate POCC officers for the
upcoming year. As you will notice in this newsletter there is
also an announcement from POCI looking for Board of
Directors. If you have a desire to be nominated or would like
to nominate someone, contact our nominating committee.
Please if you are nominating someone, talk to that person
first and get their permission.
Halloween is right around the corner, if you’re out driving
please be extra cautious.
Looking forward to seeing everyone Monday evening. Bring
a Pontiac enthusiast to our meeting.
Dean & Sheila

Pontiacs of Central California Mission Statement:
OUR MISSION, FUN!
We are made up of a group of people with various
backgrounds who have one thing in common, we
LOVE Pontiacs. We drive 'em, work on 'em,
polish 'em, restore 'em, break 'em (even cuss 'em)
and have a lot of fun doing it. Be it an old '52
Chieftain straight-eight, a new WS6 Trans Am, or
anything in between.
We are individuals, couples, and families that like to
get together for a variety of activities. We host an
annual judged car show and participate as a club in
other local and regional car shows. We have
informal BBQ Show and Shines and get together for
Brunch and Dinner Cruises. We also attend the local
Cruise Nights as a group. The cars in the club range
from Concours cars, daily drivers, drag racers and
cars undergoing restoration. Our goal is to have
FUN while enjoying our Pontiacs.

GROWING UP IN A PONTIAC CHILDHOOD by Scott Garrett
Ever since I can remember cars were a big part of my
childhood. My Dad always had some kind of “old” car/s
around our house. Many of them being Pontiacs. My Dad
joined Pontiacs of Central Calif in 1994 when I was 6 years
old. My brother and I would attend a lot of the POCC monthly
meetings and activities. I learned to drive a stick shift when I
was 11 years old in my Dad’s Nash Metropolitan. I remember
one of my favorite cars my dad owned for a while was a 1966
Lemans with a 389 and a 4 speed Manual Trans I loved driving
that car in our cul-de-sac way before I had a driver’s license.

October 2015 NEWSLETTER
When I finally got my driver’s license I went thru a few cars, a
Pinto, Mustangs, VWs, Rice burners, and even a 1960 Pontiac
Catalina 2 door post with a 389 and a 4 speed manual. I sold
that car to buy my dream car, a 1999 Black Trans Am WS6 with
a 6 speed manual. I loved that car. However, while attending
Fresno State $$ concerns forced me to make the decision to
sell it. I promised myself I would get another one “someday”.

I
was
enjoying the Lemans
but still remembered
my old WS6. I sold the
Lemans and the search

another

lot of worn out,
abused, modified, and
overpriced cars before
I found this black
beauty.
My Trans Am is a 2001

with only 77K miles.
The previous owner
took very good care of
the car and it was kept
totally stock. I have
only upgraded the
exhaust to a SLP

a

A Night at the Madera Fair
It was another warm to hot summer evening on September 10, when almost twenty POCC members added their
cars to a group on display at the Madera Fair. Most of us met at the Chevron Station at Herndon and 99 with
others joining us at the gate.
Sam and Elaine Fisher, Joel and Judy Garrett, Scott Garrett and Jacquelyn Yerian, Darroll and Mary Walter, Glen
Barber, Andy Hoff, John Berglund, Tom and Paula Yost, Bill and Cheryl Richards, along with Mike and Larry King
made up the group (my apologies if I left anyone out).
We caught some shade behind trees and tractors and spent the evening visiting and taking turns patrolling the
midway for food and snacks. We also enjoyed (or endured) a concert by the Marshall Tucker Band (and learned
that there never was a member by that name). Ron and Willa spent a good part of the evening acquiring and
replacing an errant fan belt on the Bonneville but had it cooling once again before we were done for the night.
Once the concert ended, everyone was ready to head home to sleep off too much midway food. Thanks again to
Mike and Larry King for arranging for us to attend the fair!

October 2015 NEWSLETTER
On Friday morning, September the 25th, the Simonson’s met at the Berglund’s home to caravan to Murphy’s, CA.
to attend the Ironstone Concours d’Elegance. The Simonson’s had their ’69 Custom S, and the Berglund’s took
their ’65 2+2 Catalina. We stopped in Jamestown, had lunch and looked around town….they have some nice
antique and specialty shops. After checking in to our respective rooms, we went to the show field and dropped
off the trailers. That evening we attended the Banquet and Wine tasting at the Ironstone Winery. The weather
was very nice, and the food and wine were good. After walking around Old Downtown Murphy’s that evening we
retired to our hotels.
The morning of the Car Show, Dennis and Ron headed for the Concours early. Willa and Diane stayed back and
had a wonderful breakfast at the Simonson’s Bed and Breakfast (Willa got to have Dennis’ breakfast…. which was
Blueberry Pecan Bread Pudding, scrambled eggs and a bowl of fruit with something wonderful drizzled over it,
thank you Dennis!). The guys put the cars on the field and cleaned them up.
There were around fifteen cars in Dennis’ category, and about eighteen in Ron’s category. Around ten o’clock the
cars were judged. Both cars were looked over repeatedly by the judges. As a result both cars got Best of Class.
After lunch, all of the cars that received Best of Class were called to the reviewing stand to parade over the stage
and receive their very nice Crystal Trophy. Ironstone Winery was a beautiful setting for this venue, the weather
was a little warm (in the 90’s but nice in the shade), and Murphy’s is a quaint little town to visit. Ron and Willa
loaded the car and headed for home and Dennis and Diane stayed another night.
