The Calgary International Salsa Congress will offer two days of spectacular showcases featuring the world’s best salsa dancers, classes from beginner to professional levels taught by worldclass instructors, all capped off by a qualifying competition for the 2012 World Latin Dance Cup. Produced by the biggest promoter of salsa music and dance in the world — Albert Torres — along with Calgary’s largest dance companies, Alberta Dancesport, Dando Dance Company, and Salsa Rica Productions, the event will be held at the Hyatt Regency Calgary in the heart of downtown Calgary. We expect over 1,000 participants as well as extensive local newspaper, radio and television coverage. Salsa has no age or colour, and is a perfect pastime or passion for anyone. Calgary Salsa Congress 2009 Every night of the week you can find people attending a salsa class in Calgary. Expo Latino, held every August, is Calgary’s second largest festival, drawing crowds of over 80,000 people each year. The premiere of ABC television’s immensely popular Dancing with the Stars drew an audience of 22 million people. Compare that to the audience of 200 million people around the world who watched the 2005 World Salsa Championships on ESPN in which Calgary’s own Kelly Lannan and Eric Caty placed sixth. The Calgary Salsa Congress is the one time of the year where the Calgary community comes together to celebrate, share, learn, and be inspired. Calgary Salsa Co ngress 2008 April 20–22, 2012 International Guests Liz Lira & John Narvaez Los Angeles/San Francisco Liz Lira is one of the most recognised and accomplished dancers in the World. She has been World Salsa Champion at many different events including the World Latin Dance Cup, the Mayan World Salsa Championships, and was awarded Ultimate Champion at the World Latin Dance Cup. She has been a choreographer for Dancing with the Stars, and So You Think You Can Dance, and Judges World Championship events all over the world. Liz is known as the “Rose of Salsa” was born in La Paz, Bolivia, and has spent her career travelling the world sharing her passion of dance. John Narvaez is the director of Salsamania Dance Company one of the world's top Mambo and Salsa Companies. His teams have won and placed in the top 3 at many World Salsa Championships, and is one of the most respected teams in the world. John has placed in the top 3 in many World Championships with his partner Liz Rojas. Together they run one of the top training programmes for salsa in the world with many top dancers travelling to train with John. Together John Narvaez and Liz Lira are an exciting new couple on the Salsa scene who are sure to thrill at the Calgary International Salsa Congress. BNF Dance Company Dubai/Colombia The National Ballet El Firulete’ is an institution established by Eider Rua. ‘BNF’ as they are known internationally, have headquarters in Dubai and Columbia. Eider has been awarded the National Champion of Tango and Milonga, and is the director of the Tango Ballet Company of Columbia. With his partner Luisa, they have placed in the top 3 at the World Latin Dance Cup. Through their creativity, experience and combined talents they create outstanding shows of music and dance which encompass excellent artistic and choreographic qualities, elegance, creativity and skill, They are recognized nationally and internationally as one of the most accomplished companies of dance and are renowned for their high standard of technique, innovative style as well as the high calibre of dancers. April 20–22, 2012 International Guests Junior Alabi & Emily Alabi San Francisco Junior and Emily are two of the world’s most beloved salsa dancers having placed second at the ESPN World Salsa Championships. These rising stars grew up dancing salsa in San Francisco and now travel the world, teaching and performing professionally at salsa congresses across the globe. Billy Fajardo and Katie Marlow Miami Billy and Katie are both former World Hustle Champions and World Cabaret Champions; they have competed and performed at some of the largest and most prestigious events in the World. Billy and Katie are considered among the most highly accomplished and versatile dancers in the world. They have been honoured with many lifetime achievement awards in the dance world, and are the head judges of the World Salsa Championships. Edwin Rivera Los Angeles Edwin Rivera is one of the youngest salsa superstars on the world’s Salsa scene, and has traveled to every single continent in the world for his performing, teaching and unique choreography skills. Edwin of Puerto Rican origin, was born & raised in the Bronx, New York. Now residing in Los Angeles, Edwin is one of the most popular dance-personalities in the world, especially in South America after participating in the local version of the popular television show Let’s dance, Rojo Fama Contrafama. He starred as Roberto Roena/Cheetah Solo Dancer in the movie El Cantante with Salsa superstar Marc Anthony as well as Jennifer Lopez. Edwin was honoured at the 2008 Los Angeles International Salsa Congress for his contributions to the Salsa Community around the world. He is also currently working on two feature films and just finished producing his first instrumental album named Soul Of A Dancer. April 20–22, 2012 Event Organizers Kelly Lannan and Eric Caty Kelly and Eric are two of Calgary’s most recognized dance instructors both on the local scene and internationally. They have represented Canada four times at the World Salsa Championships and in 2010 placed fourth in the world. Eric and Kelly are featured choreographers on So You Think You Can Dance CANADA and danced on the Calgary tour stop of Dancing with the Stars. They are the directors of the Salsa Rica Dance Company, and are proud to be organisers of the 5th Calgary International Salsa Congress. David & Olga Joseph David and Olga Joseph share a love for dance, music and expression. They have danced and taught for many schools, festivals and arts organizations in and around Calgary. They are affiliated with numerous productions across Canada, the United States and Mexico, and are proud to be co-producers of the Calgary International Salsa Congress. Albert Torres Albert Torres is a legendary producer, promoter, and manager in the salsa world. Albert travels the world 49 weeks a year with his international salsa congresses, and is committed to “creating unity through salsa”. He holds congresses all over North America, Asia, and Europe, and is especially proud to have produced events in Israel as well as on the Great Wall of China. In 2005 Albert founded the ESPN World Salsa Championships, which boasts an international audience of 200 million. He now continues with hosting its current form, the World Latin Dance Cup. Albert has choreographed and danced in such movies as Mambo Kings and Dance with Me, and is making a true impact by educating the world on the history and legacy of Latin music and dance. Calgar y Salsa Congress 2009 Dancers, vendors, sponsors and spectators alike were treated to capacity parties, jaw dropping professional shows, and had the opportunity to attend classes with teachers not normally available in Canada. Since last years event, the organizers have performed at many international events, and received an award from the international salsa community for their work establishing the Calgary International Salsa Congress as a leading artistic event in the salsa world.
