Serre Chevalier Vallée
Winter 2013-2014 Press pack With 1,308,000 million skiing days in 2012-13, Serre Chevalier is one of the largest ski areas in France in terms of visitor numbers. Thanks to its 250km of pistes, Serre Chevalier Vallée is also France’s largest ski resort not connected to other resorts. ...Serre Chevalier Vallée, a place for fun and sharing… A destination for all tastes… Serre Chevalier Vallée is a village-resort in the Hautes-Alpes that is blessed with exceptional weather. Lying on the border between the départements of Les Hautes-Alpes, Isère and Savoie, Serre Chevalier Vallée is a mountain village and well-being resort. The resort comprises three typical Alpine villages (Le Monêtier les Bains, Villeneuve-La Salle, Chantemerle-Saint Chaffrey), 13 hamlets and Briançon, a town inscribed onto the UNESCO World Heritage List for its Vauban fortifications. The summits of the mountains here reach altitudes of 2800m with 80% of the ski area lying at altitudes of over 2000m, giving great skiing conditions on natural snow from mid-December to mid-April. Culture at your ski tips: « Neiges de Culture » is back for a 5th season Four years ago Isabelle de Beaufort, founder of Labyrinthus, and JeanYves Salle, in charge of the ski area, came up with the slightly outrageous idea of marrying culture and skiing, scattering the pistes with cultural activities to sample with your skis on. Since then, small structures with bold designs have housed trails explaining the history of Serre Chevalier. The warm and welcoming tents of the « Village Nomade » are devoted to the cultures of the peoples of the Far North. The « Piste des Pourquoi » entertains those with a love of nature. Poems and quizzes, placed on chair lifts, warm up numbed neurons, while previously unheard stories delight the ears of headphone users. The programme of events and activities changes each season. ... Three spectacular, exciting and unusual encounters showcase this season’s event: Snow-drawings: • the artist Sonja Hinrichsen will draw huge, lyrical images in the snow, an ode to the resort’s landscapes and a sense of time having stopped. Les Enfants du Froid: • an outstanding photographic exhibition in the ‘Village Nomade’ presents portraits of nomadic children from the past and present day through the lenses of distinguished photographers. An auction of prints in aid of the Evenk Nomadic School will close the season. Jeux de pistes: • stimulating challenges and an exciting exhibition of comics ‘Les Romains font du boules… de neige’ (The Romans play snowballs) join the trail devoted to Caesar and Vauban, emblematic figures in the valley’s history. You’ll find the complete programme on page 6 in « Culture on the pistes ». Pisten Bully Hybride 600 E+ the first « hybrid » diesel-electric pisting machine on the market: Snow safety: the SCV Domaine Skiable is offering fans of off-piste skiing and boarding the opportunity to practise using an ARVA (avalanche transceiver). This item of safety equipment is indispensable once you leave the marked ski areas and it is essential you know how to use it effectively (free activities and talks). Pisteur Prudent : initiative to encourage young skiers to adopt an exemplary attitude on the pistes, and to pick out reckless skiers and boarders and encourage them to adopt the ‘cool attitude’ and, of course, not to lose their temper on the pistes! SCV Domaine Skiable is offering free Night Skiing (2 nights a weeks during the school holidays): enjoy a new way of skiing and have dinner in a mountain restaurant. Skiing ESF This new machine features innovative technology with several advantages. It is much more efficient than a machine with hydrostatic transmission, it uses up to 20% less fuel, producing around 20% fewer CO2 emissions and nitrogen oxides; the particle filter reduces environmental soot emissions by 99%, and the removal of the high pressure hydraulic drive eliminates the risk of soil pollution. Finally, the constant motion of the engine when idling makes the machine particularly quiet. Thanks to its hybrid drive design, the PistenBully can also serve as a generator and provide enough energy to run external electronic tools for repairs, for example. The machine, which will be seen on French pistes from winter 2013-14 onwards, is already establishing itself as a new benchmark in sustainable technology and a concrete response to resort managers’ concerns over budgets and ecological sustainability. ESF instructors in Chantemerle offer airbag jumps in a dedicated safety area. Across the ski area, ESF instructors provide services for skiers with disabilities to ski in complete safety with monoskis, dualskis, tandemskis and kartskis, with an information chalet right next to the pistes in Villeneuve. In Le Monêtier Les Bains training in cross-country skiing and biathlon is available. Aravet 2000 « Dancefloor » Once a week the Aravet 2000 bar restaurant organises an afternoon of music and festivities for skiers. The ski area has given its creator, Isabelle de Beaufort, « carte blanche ». For this particular season, «Neiges de Culture» evokes the beauty of the ski area’s landscapes, which frequently dazzle the skiers who too often hurriedly leave their tracks in the snow. Sonja Hinrichsen leaves her own marks in the fresh snow with her «Snow-drawings», a spectacular installation in dialogue with nature. The «Village Nomade» presents a previously unseen group exhibition of searching images by distinguished photographers, «Les Enfants du Froid», voted by the public. And once again, the «jeux de pistes» showcase the area’s rich history with exhibits to explore with family and friends. There are other exhibits and activities to engage skiers in their trials and tribulations along the pistes. « Snow-drawings »: an ode to the landscape and eulogy to leisureliness. Office du Tourisme de Serre Chevalier Vallée 05240 Serre Chevalier Tél. 33 (0)4 92 24 98 98 www.serre-chevalier.com Contact Presse D’Com Gaëlle MOREAU - 33 (0)6 87 30 67 87 [email protected] 6 Led by artist Sonja Hinrichsen, dozens of walkers draw huge lyrical circles in the glistening snow, creating an ephemeral work that praises the landscape without altering it. Snow-art Spirals, like great mandalas, suddenly appear from snowshoe-clad footsteps on fields of fresh snow in seven venues. Lasting one, two, three days, these ephemeral creations disappear in subsequent snowfalls. Sonja Hinrichsen feels no need to create permanent works of art, to «add objects to a world saturated with objects». Yet her work remains in the photographic memory and in that of the skiers, who, as actors or spectators, momentarily pause and catch their breath as they renew a link with nature that the artist believes is often broken. The reach of the work is as much ecological as it is artistic. Sonja Hinrichsen traced her «Snow-drawings» in the mountains of Colorado in 2011. This is her first work in France. ... Sonja Hinrichsen Originally from Germany, Sonja lives on the west coast of the United States. She has a degree in Fine Arts from Stuttgart and a Masters in Fine Art from San Francisco. In 2001, her installation «31MUNIRides» was awarded the McMillan prize. Since then she has been invited to exhibit individually and as part of a group in the United States, Europe and China. Her recent installations highlight the alterations man makes to his environment (Where the Waters Meet, «immersion» in the history of Denver; The Three Gorges, video installation on the Yangzi River dam in China). Sonja’s response to academic discourses on protecting the environment is Yes, you can eat them, which uses 27 computers to show the incredible number of edible plants collected in public parks and what she did with them Where & when? 15 to 22 February 2014. Free. The venue is revealed on the day of the event, and not a single ski track can mark the huge white canvas. « Les enfants du froid »: 80 portraits from here and elsewhere. Installed on the pistes, in the Village Nomade, this group exhibition brings together 40 portraits of children of the Arctic peoples and Central Asian nomads. As a counterpoint, Franck Gérard shows images of the children of the valley. The two strands of the show examine the links they have with their birthplaces. The prints go on sale in aid of the Evenk Nomadic School. « Les enfants du froid, portraits d’ailleurs. » Photographers exhibiting Their internationally recognised work documents the special link that unites these ancient peoples with nature, the move from a nomadic to a sedentary lifestyle, the struggle to maintain their traditions and culture, and the threats hanging over their lands prized for their natural resources. Robert Gessain (1905-1986): Inuit, images d’Ammassalik, 1934-1936. Photographs from an expedition by the ethnographer and doctor, companion to Paul-Emile Victor and Commandant Charcot. Tina Iktonen : la photographe finlandaise, membre de l’école d’Helsinski, offre un contrepoint contemporain avec son remarquable travail : Inughuit. Lucile Chombart de Lauwe : Foyers (urbains) mongols. This series earned the young photographer a special mention at the Roger Pic Prize 2012. Erika Larsen : They walk with reindeers. The American photographer learnt the language and lived for two years with Sami livestock breeders. Her images were praised at Perpignan’s «Visa pour l’image» Festival. Michel Debats : L’école nomade des Evenks. The director followed everyday life in the taiga. Jean-François Delamarre : Grimaces. unique work on an Inuit ritual that defies acculturation. Yuri Kozyrev : Yamal Peninsula. Kozyrev is a leading photojournalist who covers conflicts across the world. His reports have been awarded four World Press Photo awards and the prestigious Olivier Rebbot award. Hamid Sardar : Dark Heavens et Eagles. An Iraqi living in Mongolia, Sardar is a Mongolian and Tibetan language specialist and has been photographing the peoples of Asia for 10 years, in this case the last of the Tsaatans, and the Altai hunters and their eagles. Pierre de Vallombreuse : Gwitchin, pétrole contre caribous et Inuits du Groenland. Two reportages from the book-exhibition «Hommes racines» by a photographer working across the world for 20 years. Aim of the exhibition These portraits offer a sensitive and truthful glimpse of children’s lives, some of whom are nomads, in extreme environments. The journey illustrates their relationships with nature and school, their games and education, and at times highlights the consequences of sedentism. 7 ... Evenk Nomadic School Founded in 2006, with the help of Alexandra Lavillier, a French anthropologist married to an Evenk livestock farmer from the Stanovoy mountains, the school travels 1200km through the Siberian taiga each winter. Tents and computers make the journey on sledges pulled by reindeer. This means the children grow up among their families and share the nomadic lifestyle. Without this they are sent to boarding school from the age of 6. Contacted by Isabelle de Beaufort, all the photographers have agreed to donate a number of their prints to support the initiative. Around the exhibition • In the Jack London chalet, which houses the «Far North library», there will be readings from London’s short story collection «Children of the Frost». • Showing of Michel Debats’s multi award-winning film «L’école nomade». • Stories and legends from the Far North in the «Village Nomade» tents. Where & when? 21 December 2013 to 21 April 2014. Free. The ‘Village Nomade’ is located on the Piste des Myrtilles and is hosted by an actor everyday. « Les enfants du froid. Portraits d’ici. » Franck Gérard, the author in 2009 of a series of work about snow called «La Peau» (Skin) returns as artist in residence for these 40 portraits, with its special scenography. Starting point « The living spaces through which we move as children make us who we are. Is growing up in the mountains so very different these days from elsewhere, given the networks linking us to the outside world? Are these new customs transforming our relationships with the places in which we live? I will meet the children of the valley. These encounters will allow me to see the links they have made with their environment and what it means to them. The fruits of this work could be family portraits or images of children going about their daily lives.» Franck Gérard. Franck Gérard Born in 1972. Armed with his camera, he captures fleeting moments in life, and funny and unusual situations. «En l’état, 13 juillet 1999-Aujourd’hui» contains tens of thousands of images. His work has been exhibited at the «Rencontres Internationales» in Arles, the Centre Georges PompidouMetz, the São Paulo Museum of Contemporary Art and France’s François Mitterand national library. He has also received support from France’s Centre National des Arts Plastiques. Franck Gérard has created several series of portraits. « Jeux de pistes »: history and nature at your ski tips. Three themed trials away from the busiest slopes address the history of the valley and the world of the mountains. During this season’s school holidays an actor will take adults and children alike, complete with skis, into the «Huttes de Chioné» where soundscapes and observational games await them. La « Piste des Pourquoi » gives children the opportunity to ask their parents tricky questions on flora and fauna, the dangers of the mountains and working with skis… « Vauban et le manuscrit secret » has the pistes overlooking Briançon and the World Heritage Listed forts with their powdering of snow as a backdrop, and follows in the footsteps of Louis XIV’s brilliant architect. 8 Le « Complot contre César » dives down towards the Le Monêtier hot springs and reveals that the mountainfolk of the valley offered a chilly welcome to the Romans in AD58, and sets the record straight about the Gauls. Half-way through there is the chance to take off your skis at the Camp César. ... Les Romains font des bulles… de neige. While the Romans put on their cat-skin socks to tackle the snow that terrifies them, skiers stand in front of large format images from the comic book La Guerre des Gaules, by Tarek et Pompetti from Les Éditions Tartamundo. This multi award-winning album is written like a spy thriller, inspired by Caesar’s ‘commentaries’ and is well-researched. Vincent Pompetti’s superb illustrations enhanced with watercolours inspire readers of all ages. This exciting and previously unseen comic book exhibition also recognises other cult series: «Le Casque d’Agris», «Les Aigles de Rome», «Les Boucliers de Mars», «Alix», «Murena», and not forgetting «Astérix». The authors will be signing their books during the February school holidays, before the «Bulle de Glace» festival. Where & when? The three trails can be accessed throughout the season. Camp César runs everyday during the school holidays. Weekly ‘Jeux de pistes’ during the school holidays. Other highlights from the schedule Les Remontées Animées: hairlifts adorned with 400 poems inspired by snow and fun quizzes. L’Ivresse des Sommets: black and white rocks to interpret the area’s most handsome panoramas. Histoires en pente: skiing «all ears» in the company of skier Luc Alphand and the mountaineer Raymond Renaud. Carte blanche : the gastronomic section of Neiges de Culture programme has been designed in collaboration with chef William Ledeuil, who runs the Michelin starred Paris restaurant Ze Kitchen Galerie and is fan of the Serre Chevalier slopes. Each season Isabelle de Beaufort invites restaurateurs to create «Menus blancs» relating their colours, textures, spices, as well as their names, history, marriage of dishes and wines to white, the snow, the cold and the cultural trails. Chefs have been playing along for four years! Les Menus blancs, côté pistes Just at the arrival of the brand new Serre Ratier cable car, Anne-Marie Marquillé in The Chalet hôtel, proposes a delicious menu refering to white dishes and Serge Nguyen also introduces the white « à la carte». Runing the « Complot de Cesar » piste, down to Monetier, the « menus blancs » are proposed by 2 chefs, sensitive to the quality of dishes: Daniel Laurens in The Flocon and Damien Vigno Docchio in the Peyra-juana, 2 friendly and typical mountain restaurants. More info on the « Neiges de Culture » www.neigesdeculture.com Les Menus blancs, côté villages In Chantemerle, the young chef Dilek of the Triptique, combines flavors and colors, in the Restaurant-Lounge, Mathieu selects wines to accompany the white dishes. At Salomon’s in La Cabassa, the white menus have italian flavors and in the warm ambiance of Le Loup Blanc, each season the chef proposes new original white menus. In Monêtier, La Maison Alliey, Hervé Buisson and his chef, combine delicious different white dishes. The creation of a destination Collaboration between Briançon and Serre Chevalier for the promotion of tourist and commercial purposes Thanks to its central reservation service, the Serre Chevalier Tourist Office has been promoting Briançon accommodation providers since 2010. Buoyed by the experience, the four local authorities in Serre Chevalier and Briançon have decided to create a single body charged with managing tourist promotion and marketing ventures. The Serre Chevalier Vallée Tourist Office will take the reins of this new body, which is gradually coming into being and involves 50 partners and a budget of 7 million euros. The aim is to create a single destination and share resources under a single identity, «Serre Chevalier Vallée». Serre Chevalier affirms its commitment to improved environmental protection. Various partners in the tourism sector have introduced a number of measures to improve awareness-raising programmes, as well as waste and energy management systems. SCV Domaine Skiable, part of the Compagnie des Alpes, has had QSE (Quality Safety Environment) certification since this winter, as well as ISO 9001 (management system based on customer satisfaction), ISO 14000 (management system to reduce environmental impact), and OHSAS (health and safety at work management system) certifications.
