Message from the President & CEO
Advertising vs. Marketing
St. Luke’s
The Woodlands Hospital ...
Top 10 in the
Houston Metro Area.
Being named one of the Top 10 hospitals in the
Houston Metro Area and receiving recognition
as high-performing in neurology & neurosurgery
and orthopedics is an honor.
Yet, what’s truly impressive is not the praise,
but the people who’ve earned it — the doctors,
nurses and staff who give our patients their best,
year after year.
And to our patients and their loved ones,
we thank you for the trust you place in us.
You’re the reason we never stop reaching further
and striving to be even better.
Sometimes I run across an article that just cuts
to the heart of a subject and deserves re-printing.
One of the most frequently requested subjects
when our Affinity Team does their annual survey
is: “Tell us the difference between Advertising
and Marketing”.
Even some of our most experienced business
people have trouble defining it exactly, so it is no
wonder that new business owners are confused.
The article below clears that up and treats it
with humor which makes it memorable. Our
Karen Hoylman
thanks to the Better Business Bureau for letting
us reprint the article–the original author is unknown.
WHAT IS THE BEST DEFINITION OF MARKETING?
If you answered “sales”, you would be only partially right! Actually,
selling is just one component of marketing. Let me explain further–
using a little imagery.
If the circus is coming to town and you paint a sign saying, “Circus
is coming to the Fairgrounds on Sunday,” that’s ADVERTISING.
If you put a sign on the back of an elephant and walk him through
town, that’s a PROMOTION.
If the elephant convinces people in town to attend the circus,
that’s SALES.
If the elephant walks through the mayor’s flower bed, that’s
PUBLICITY.
If you can get the mayor to laugh about it, that’s PUBLIC
RELATIONS.
And if you planned the whole thing, that’s MARKETING!
Once you understand that “marketing” is really an umbrella that
encompasses several elements for the purpose of getting someone to
buy your brand, you’ll want to incorporate all elements into your
marketing plan.
Happy Marketing!

reliable, long-term water supplies for
our future, SJRA is constructing a water

transmission lines to deliver 30 million
gallons per day of top quality, treated
surface water to our community. This
construction will be accomplished by a

Young Professionals Network
Debt Management & Financial Planning Lunch & Learn
The Young Professionals Network “YPN” hosted their first
Lunch & Learn Seminar in February. Debt Management &
Financial Planning was a peer to peer seminar presented by members of the young professionals ambassador team: Henry Stevens,
Investment Advisory Services, Inc.; Ryan Mathes, Schroeder
& Associates, Amerprise Financial Services, Inc. and Keaton
McDaniel, Edward Jones Investments.
The seminar was moderated by Jay Tompkins, CPA with
Karlins Ramey & Tompkins LLC. The panel touched on debt
management solutions to help members learn how to pay down
their obligations, make sound investment decisions to suit needs
including whether or not to participate in 401K plans, IRA’s
and SEP accounts. They also touched on various college savings
options.
The event was sponsored by Rico’s Catering, which unveiled
their new line of boxed lunches. It was a well-attended seminar.
We are excited to see the changes in YPN and hope that our members continue to find the options well received.
The next YPN Event is an after-hours reception scheduled for
Thursday, April 18, at Karlins Ramey & Tompkins LLC. We
hope you will join us.
Our panel of experts: Henry Stevens, Ryan Mathes and Keaton McDaniel.
YPN Team Leader Chris Elmi, Keller Williams Realty,
and YPN Co-Team Leader and Seminar Moderator
Jay Tompkins.
Community Relations Team
Celebrating Dr. Seuss
The Community Relations Team volunteered their time to
Assistance League of Montgomery County for Dr. Seuss’ birthday. Team members signed up to go to various elementary schools
to read a selection of Dr. Seuss books to the classes. To get in
character, the team was asked to dress in black with a red tie or
scarf and report to the Assistance League’s offices for the finishing whiskers and top hat. It was a great experience and the team
received so much from seeing the excitement on the faces of the
children.
Pictured are Andrea Wilson, Montgomery County 911

Montgomery County’s healthcare at their recent Session, sponsored
by St. Luke’s The Woodlands Hospital.
Session Directors Linda Nelson and Debbie Sukin gave an overview of the day. Walter Wilkerson, Jr., MD, presented the history of

EfTA is Planning for 2013 Student Internship Program
Education for Tomorrow Alliance was created in 1989 by members of the community in collaboration with The Woodlands Area
Chamber. Its goal is to inspire students to start seeking answers to
the question: “What do you want to be when you grow up?”
More than 20 years later, EfTA’s Student Internship Program (SIP)
continues to support students as they explore career options. SIP offers
bright, motivated high school seniors hands-on work experience in a
variety of career fields. Internships have great potential to not only further students’ education but to also give them an edge after high school
as they apply for college and pursue professional careers.
In addition, the process of applying offers insights to the job search
and introduces students to the value of networking and developing
transferrable skills that can eventually be included on a resume.
