Richmond Wood was probably given its name due to a connection with the Duke of Richmond, erstwhile owner of nearby Gordon Castle.
The woods have been very carefully thinned, making it easy and pleasant to walk through the woods. However you will come across vigorous
growth of rowan and ash demonstrating an energetic rejuvenation of the understory. This mix of old and new growth lends itself to the
creation of interesting natural glades where more sunlight can penetrate to the forest floor, encouraging biodiversity as well as creating places
suitable for camping. Three benches have been placed in one of these glades where the weary worker or the attentive observer can rest a
while and contemplate the surrounding beauty.
In spring and summer the woods are alive with birdsong with many nesting birds attracted to the already diverse ground flora and fauna. North
East Scotland is regarded as a haven for birdlife with its wide range of habitats and is a stronghold for, the Scottish crossbill, which is the only
species which is unique to the United Kingdom.
The nearby town of Huntley was formerly known as Strathbogie and is perhaps best known for being the home of the Gordon Highlanders
regiment. There is great salmon and trout fishing on the nearby Deveron and Bogie Rivers. Close to Huntley is the start of Scotland's longest
horse ride trail, Highland Horseback, running an adventurous 200 miles out to the west coast.

The woods are well placed for exploring the surrounding area with the beautiful towns of Banchory, Ballater and Braemar to the south and the
stunning countryside of Deeside to the Northwest. The Cairngorm National Park is within striking distance as well as many small fishing
villages to the north.
