Mature oaks, mixed with ash, sycamore and birch, are the tallest trees in the broad-leafed section of Yaff Wood. Beneath this higher canopy,
grow other species such as cherry, rowan, holly and beech.
Most of the floor throughout the woodland is carpeted with bluebells, which form a sea of glorious blue flowers in late Spring. Growing in and
amongst them are some large patches of wood anemones, with sparkling white flowers, which are accentuated by the verdant green and blue
of the surrounding bluebells.
Ancient ferns and the occasional bramble patch, are also dotted around the wood while coppiced hazel also appears quite frequently. The
protective structure of these species creates shelter and cover for ground-nesting birds such as Woodcock and Pheasant. Wild honey suckle
spirals up into the canopy offering numerous nesting opportunities for the birds that live within the woods, and its perfume will drift on the air
on warm, still evenings. The variety of plant species found in the woodland, are a hint at ancient history, and the entire wood is designated as
PAWS, planted ancient woodland site.
About one third of Yaff Wood is pine; the tall straight trees are all of a similar age and many pine cones cover the floor. On a warm and still
spring day, the cones up in the canopy can be heard popping and cracking open in the sunshine, throwing their seeds to begin the next
generation. Even in this section of the woodland the indicator plants of ancient woodland are visible; coppice-grown trees form the understory,
with ferns and bluebells beneath.
At nearby Holy Moor, a site of prehistoric rock art can be found, one of several in the Peak District and its surrounds. The rock, with cup marks
surrounded by weathered rings, lies at the edge of a pile of smaller stones, the result of mediaeval field clearance, but it is likely that the
larger rock has not been moved far from its original position, if at all.
Nearby Chesterfield is famous for the crooked spire of St Mary and All Saints Church, which was built in the late 13th Century and finished
around 1360. Being the largest church in Derbyshire, its spire is 228 feet above the ground and leans a staggering 9 feet and 5 inches from its
true centre. The spire was built straight and true but it has distorted due to its construction from green timber and the addition of 32 tons of
lead: enough to distort anyone's back!
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and
meadows.

From M1 junction 29 take the A617 signed to Chesterfield.
Follow the A617 dual carriage way for about 4 miles and at the next roundabout take the first exit onto the A61 signed to Derby and
Matlock.
Continue on the A61, after passing the Tesco Express turn right at the traffic lights sign posted for Matlock (A632) and Buxton (A619).
Follow this road up the hill and at the roundabout take the second exit onto the A632 signed to Matlock.
Pass Walton Hospital on the left.
Continue up hill and at the traffic lights go straight on past the Texaco garage.
Follow the A632 Matlock road for about 1½ miles until you reach a ‘Woodlands for Sale’ sign on the left. Pull in here and park ensuring the
gated access is left clear.
On foot now, climb the stile and follow the farm track for about 400 metres until the gate into Walton woods is reached.
Yaff Wood is approximately 800 metres down the recently improved and upgraded track, on the right.
