There is nothing quite like a “new ride” to generate
feelings of pride and satisfaction. Since the invention of
the automobile well over 100 years ago, a new vehicle
has been a symbol of success and accomplishment
With hundreds of new cars and trucks
on display, the 2012 Auto Show will
surpass all previous shows in its 32-year
history in regards to the vast range of
manufacturers, models, colours, materials and options available.
With more than 250,000 square feet
of exhibition space, dozens of manufacturers and as many accessory booths, the
2012 Auto Show will provide solutions
for almost any transportation challenge.
We will have passenger vehicles that
are incredibly fuel-efficient, trucks that
meet a range of uses and luxury vehicles
that cater to even the most discerning
of tastes. And let’s not forget to mention
the thoroughbreds that possess pulsequickening power and speed.
You will also find cutting-edge concept cars with a range of fuel choices,
from gas and diesel through to hybrid
and fully electric — some with newly developed colours, and other options that
provide consumers with an amazing
variety of choices.
In addition, the 77 member dealers of
the Calgary Motor Dealers Association
are delighted to host the 13th annual

lins is the signature kickoff event for the
Auto Show and provides its guests with
an impressive array of international cuisines, musical interludes by musicians of
the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and
an exclusive preview of the hundreds
of vehicles on display at the show. The
gala has surpassed $2 million in funds
raised for Calgary charities over its 12year history. To receive your invitation
to this event, please visit our website.
It is also worthy to note that the 2012
Auto Show is a non-profit undertaking,
with net proceeds being donated to
charity. Over the history of the show,
many hundreds of thousands of dollars
have been generated and donated to
the benefit of worthy Calgary causes.
Please be sure to visit our website

you can learn more about the show
and conveniently purchase your tickets
online, avoiding the lineups at the door
and saving a bit of money in the process.
I look forward to seeing you at the

ome come to shop, some just to kick tires and compare
specs, but let’s face it — a big reason to come to the Auto
Show is to get an eyeful of some cool new cars. And this
year’s show offers plenty to entice the auto buff, from futuristic and retro concepts to high-tech “green” machines,
modern muscle cars, luxury vehicles and exotic supercars. Here’s a
quick look at a few:
• Subaru XV concept (pictured left): Based on the Impreza
platform, but with added ground clearance and a more
aggressive stance, the XV is an all-wheel-drive “light
crossover” hatchback powered by a new
2.0-litre version of Subaru’s horizontally opposed “flat four” engine.
It’s currently being referred to as
a 2013 model, but no definite
launch date is known.
• 2013 Chevrolet Spark: The
Chevy Spark mini-car is laying claim
to a chunk of the territory the Smart fortwo has
until now had all to itself. Chevy says the sub-Sonic-sized
Spark is “where affordability meets swagger.” It’ll have to contend
with the Scion iQ, another newcomer to the teeny-tiny-car category.
• BMW M5 (pictured right): The new BMW M5’s stylish,
authoritative appearance hints that there’s power
lurking under its hood. And indeed there is —
560 horsepower from a turbocharged V-8.
• Cadillac ULC: Something different — really different — is Cadillac’s
Urban Luxury Concept. Definitely in
the “you gotta see this” category, it’s
a city car design study with unusual
features, including scissor-type doors,
and forward-looking content such as a hybrid powertrain with a turbocharged three-cylinder 1.0-litre engine.
• Bentley Mulsanne: The name is a nod to Bentley’s racing heritage; Mulsanne is the long, high-speed straight section of the Le
Mans circuit in France, home of the renowned 24-hour race where
Bentley sports cars achieved complete domination in the late 1920s.
Today’s Bentley cars are big, luxurious, powerful and taut, in the
tradition of grand touring. The Mulsanne’s high-tech new 6.75-litre
twin-turbo V-8 delivers effortless power and abundant torque from
just above idle.
• Lotus Evora S: A product of the storied British sports and racing
car maker, the agile Evora S cocoons the avid motorist in sumptuous leather-lined comfort, while its supercharged V-6 engine
cranks out 345 h.p., whisking you from a standstill to 100 km/h in
4.7 seconds.
• 2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo: With a turbocharged 1.6-L four
delivering 201 h.p., and design cues inspired by high-performance
sport motorcycles, this new Hyundai will give anyone shopping for
a Volkswagen Golf GTI, a Mini Cooper S or a Honda Civic Coupe Si
another option to consider. The Veloster boasts a lot to like, including great aerodynamics and impressive fuel economy.

Automakers storm into 32nd annual show with more cars, larger displays
By greg williams

algary Motor Dealers Association
general manager Jim Gillespie says the
same thing every year around this time.
“There just isn’t a better time to buy a
new car or truck,” he says, laughing.
“But safety systems have never been better, and
the technology in the latest vehicles is incredible.
With all of that said, current pricing seems to be
where it was seven or eight years ago.”
Indeed, there is renewed optimism in the
auto industry at the 32nd annual Calgary
International Auto and Truck Show, where, as
Gillespie says, it’s one-stop shopping under the
roof of the BMO Centre.
In 2012, major manufacturers are picking up the
pace, with many allocating more dollars to their
car show efforts — larger displays, new sets and
backdrops and more vehicles.
“There’s a bit of a resurrection in the auto industry,
and it goes across the board,” says Gillespie.
To be sure, there were challenges in 2011, with a
tsunami and then flooding wreaking some havoc
for not only the Asian automakers, but also the
domestics. But with the shortfalls behind them,
Gillespie says, every automaker is coming out hard.
Toyota is but one example. The
venerable Japanese automaker has
already introduced, or is set to introduce over the
next year, some 13 new or redesigned models.
Included in that lineup is the all-new Prius c,
the compact sibling in the Prius family, plus
new Camry, Avalon, RAV4 and Corolla vehicles.
Toyota’s hip youth-oriented brand, Scion, also
has two new vehicles. A two-door micro car, the
diminutive iQ — a vehicle the
company dubs the world’s smallest
four-seater — is turning heads.
And coming soon to the Scion stable is
the FR-S, pictured below, a two-seat sports
coupe that was developed jointly with Subaru.
Both of Scion’s new cars are on display here.
Hyundai is showing its refreshed rear-wheeldrive 2013 Genesis coupe alongside its
newest compact sport coupe, the 2013 Veloster
Turbo. Of the Veloster Turbo, Steve Kelleher,
president and CEO of Hyundai Auto Canada,
says: “It’s powerful, high-tech, and fuel-efficient,
attributes which we think makes the Veloster
Turbo the ultimate entry in the compact sport
coupe segment.”
Domestic automakers are a big story, too. Ford
and Chrysler have plenty to be proud of, as does
GM. Ford’s doing well with its range of EcoBoost
V-6 and inline-4 power plants, engines that deliver
more horsepower and torque than units almost
twice their size. >>

OVERVIEW
<< Chrysler is back with its Ride ‘n’ Drive event, giving show-goers
the opportunity to spend some seat time in vehicles such as the Fiat
500, 300 Ltd AWD and Grand Cherokee SRT. The test drives occur
in the north parking lot area, and the program is in operation during
regular show hours.
General Motors, meanwhile, is stealing the show with its restored
1959 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Concept, joining the all-new 2013
Chevrolet Spark, 2012 Buick Verano, GMC Sierra All-Terrain HD and
2013 Cadillac XTS and ULC.
Exotics, always popular, are sprinkled throughout the BMO Centre.
Lamborghini is showcasing the 700-horsepower 2012 Aventador
LP700-4 while Lotus has brought the Evora IPS.
Aston Martin is also wowing show-goers with its 2012 Virage, a
gasp-producing coupe sporting a 5.9-litre V-12, while Bentley, has
brought, for the first time to Calgary, its flagship Mulsanne to go
alongside the new Continental GT and GTC.
New this year in the exotic camp is the HTT Technologies Plethore
LC-750 sports car, pictured above, a made-in-Quebec supercar with
a central steering wheel position. With the driver thus situated, the
Plethore LC-750 is something of a street-legal single-seat racing car.
Yet with passenger seats on either side of the driver, it’s a three-seater.
Once again, all 250,000 square feet of the BMO Centre’s five halls are being utilized, with accessory and aftermarket exhibitors returning to Hall E.
“Over 90 per cent of these businesses are locally owned and operated, and they’re a great complement to the show,” Gillespie says.
Companies such as Auto Protectors, Davenport Racing, the Rod
Shop and Tunerworks are back, and as Gillespie adds: “These are businesses owned by our neighbours — they’re unique to Calgary.”
Show-goers also have the opportunity to win vehicles. The Calgary
Herald is offering up the all-new 2013 Mazda CX-5 compact crossover, while the Calgary Sun is giving away a 2012 Toyota Camry.
Adult weekday tickets to this year’s show are $10. Adult weekday
show-goers receive a $2 discount if they purchase tickets at
www.autoshowcalgary.com.
Access to the show is available either through the main gate on the
south side of the BMO Centre, or a second gate on the north side at
Hall D. A separate entrance for tickets purchased online is located at
the front of Hall A.

family matters
New model year sports fresh faces with your brood in mind
By Gerald vander pyl
F
or years, the standard “family” vehicle in
Canada was the minivan.
But that’s started to change as automakers
realize many buyers would rather shed
the minivan’s image, but retain the features that make it family-friendly and convenient.
Take the 2013 Infiniti JX, due in showrooms later
this year, as an example. Stylish and sophisticated,
it’s also been named one of the year’s smartest
family cars by Parenting magazine.
The JX has seating for up to seven people, and
almost infinitely adjustable second- and third-row
seats that can fold flat for maximum storage. Access
to the third row of seating is still maintained even
when a child seat is installed in the second row.
The spacious interior also has three climate zones
with separate controls, two panoramic moonroofs
and available headrest screens for watching videos.
Safety is also high on the list of priorities for many
drivers, and again manufacturers have responded.
The Infiniti JX features Backup Collision Intervention, which includes sensors that detect any
vehicles or obstacles behind it. The system provides
drivers with both visual and audible warnings, and
can even apply the brakes to avoid a collision.
The Blind Spot Intervention feature, meanwhile,
alerts the driver to vehicles in the mirrors’ blind
spots, and can actively assist the JX back toward
the centre of its travel lane.
The JX’s Around View Monitor takes the backup
camera to a new level, with four cameras that provide a 360-degree view of the driver’s surroundings and any obstacles.

rosy outlook
Canadian auto industry in a good place after tumultuous years, says analyst
FISKER
KARMA
The Karma, by California-based Fisker Automotive, is billed as the “world’s
first premium electric
plug-in hybrid.” Simply
put, it’s an environmentally
responsible exotic sportsluxury car.
It delivers a top speed of
more than 200 km/h, accelerates to 96 km/h from a
standing start in 5.9 seconds
and carries four passengers
— all while achieving realworld fuel economy of 2.35
litres per 100 kilometres.
Fisker’s history as a
company only goes back
to 2007, but founders Henrik Fisker and Bernhard
Koehler have impeccable
automotive pedigrees.
Koehler was hired by
BMW at age 16, later working in product development
for Ford, Aston Martin and
Mini. Fisker, meanwhile,
designed the BMW Z8,
Aston Martin DB9 and V8
Vantage, and Ford Shelby
GR-1 concept, among
others.
They’ve gathered a
“dream team” of designers
and investors dedicated to
producing electric vehicles
with extended range that
offer luxury, passion, style
and performance.
T
he outlook is rosy for the Canadian
automotive industry in 2012, as
manufacturers adapt to increased
demand for vehicles that offer better fuel
efficiency, technology and longevity, says
veteran auto industry watcher Dennis DesRosiers.
For the first time in nearly five years, the automotive market is no longer “at risk,” says DesRosiers,
founder of DesRosiers Automotive Consultants Inc.
Every year since 2007, most analysts predicted
the market would, at best, be flat or slightly down
from the previous year. But as each year
progressed, various risk factors tilted the market
in a downward direction.
“Now we’re into a market that looks like it should
be fairly positive,” says DesRosiers. “Everyone is
predicting low growth, but the market could surprise (us by being) high. We’ve not had that for a
long time.”
Whatever growth there was over the past several
years has been primarily in the light-truck category
— which includes SUVs — as many buyers played
catchup after deferring purchases during the recent
recession.
With that demand satiated now, passenger cars
will come on strong, predicts DesRosiers — particular vehicles that offer improved fuel efficiency.
Although sales volumes are still relatively small,
virtually every manufacturer has introduced hybrid
models across their lineups. Some, such as General
Motors and Nissan, have also added plug-in
electrics such as the Volt and Leaf, respectively,
which will be joined by four to five other models
by the end of next year.
Some automakers have also unveiled all-new
vehicle platforms that offer a choice of two or
three conventional-fuel engines.

edented way, says DesRosiers.
The used vehicle market, meanwhile,
continues to grow in Canada.
DesRosiers says vehicle ownership levels flat-lined
at about two-thirds of all Canadians eligible to
drive from the mid-1970s until the beginning of
the new millennium.
Since 2001, ownership has jumped to 78 per
cent, with most of that increase in used vehicles.
The reason behind the jump, according to DesRosiers, is the increased quality of today’s vehicles
— they last longer and, thus, are less of a risky
purchase, in buyers’ minds.

a buyer’s market
Automakers come into 2012 swinging, with new designs and technologies
By SUZANNE BEAUBIEN
I
t’s beginning to look like the auto industry’s
recent losses have been the car buyer’s gain.
After a downturn that sent the industry on a
major course correction, automakers are back
and swinging, with distinctive new designs,
ever-increasing fuel efficiency and technological
features that let drivers remain connected to their
social networks without jeopardizing safety.
Even entry-level buyers can expect to get more for
their money in the near future, says Darren Slind,
regional leader for Canada and Latin America at
J.D. Power and Associates’ automotive division.
The trend continues to be toward improving fuel
efficiency — but not at the expense of performance.
“That’s the theme across every manufacturer
across every kind of product — whether it was premium or economy. Everybody was talking about
best-in-class fuel efficiency.”
Notable, says Slind, was the new four-cylinder
BMW 3 Series.
“For the longest time — at least in North America
— they only sold that model with a six-cylinder
engine. Now, they’re moving to a four-cylinder
turbo, which is consistent with what many other
manufacturers have done, including Ford with its
EcoBoost technology.”
Keeping fuel economy in mind, 2012 is all about
the engine options, notes Slind, pointing to Ford’s
new Fusion, pictured above, which has a number
of drivetrain options, including a turbocharged
performance variant and a hybrid. A plug-in version
is also expected down the road.
As for styling, a luxury look and touchable highquality interior finishes are becoming the standard
— even in lower-cost vehicles, says Slind.
At this year’s Detroit auto show,
the consensus was the Fusion looked
like an Aston Martin, says Slind. And

better, adds Slind.
“A lot of attention is being paid to
interior design,” he says. “And that’s
particularly true among the Detroit Three, which
have come a long way in the past few years
toward matching Japanese and German
vehicles in terms of quality.”
And when it comes to hands-free Bluetooth and
voice-activated technology that offer drivers safer
ways to navigate and maintain connections, those
features are no longer the domain of luxury vehicles. Ford’s Sync, for one, allows motorists to use
their favourite mobile apps and even have tweets
read aloud while they’re driving.

2013 CX-5 compact SUV.
Mazda calls the CX-5 the

the automaker’s new “Skyactiv” technologies.
Skyactiv encompasses a

designed to be safe, efficient,
environmentally friendly
and fun to drive.
Under the CX-5’s hood is
a 2.0-litre, 150-horsepower
gasoline engine, coupled to
a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.
The Skyactiv engine’s

Advances have turned many of today’s vehicles into gas misers
By Joel Schlesinger
F
uel efficiency has become a perennial
catch-phrase come auto show season.
Enthusiasts can look regularly forward
to a new crop of increasingly miserly gas
sippers from automakers — and 2012’s
new vehicles are undoubtedly the most fuel efficient
four-wheeled creatures to ever set rubber to the road.
And despite several more-heralded types of powertrain, the good ol’ internal combustion engine is
holding its own in the stinginess derby.
Take the 2012 Subaru Impreza. Long renowned for
its sporty mix of handling and power both on and
off the road, this year’s model is the most fuel -efficient all-wheel-drive on the market, says Joe
Felstein with Subaru Canada.
“It’s 30 per cent more fuel efficient than last year’s
model,” he says.
The 2.0-litre boxer engine comes with a secondgeneration Lineartronic continuously variable transmission that averages 7.5 L/100 km in the city.
It’s technological advances like those seen on the
Impreza that have helped conventional gasoline vehicles improve their fuel efficiency by more than 50 per
cent in the last decade, says industry observer Dennis
DesRosiers.
“There are probably at least 100 technologies that
are being developed or employed in your standard
internal combustion engine to make
it more fuel-efficient,” he says.
Mazda has also introduced what it

that will be Mazda’s first vehicle to

The CX-5 is expected to offer highway fuel economy of 5.7 L / 100 km. “That’s even better than
some hybrid SUVs,” says Lemaitre.

New technologies are putting smaller vehicles on a level playing field
By Joel Schlesinger
SCION iQ
It’s pretty clear that Scion’s
parent company, Toyota,
had the Smart fortwo
squarely in its crosshairs
while designing the iQ.
And in many areas this
sub-$20,000 micro-car has
an edge over its European
counterpart. It’s a bit longer
(30 centimetres, to be exact)
and, thanks to its asymmetrical seating arrangement, accommodates three
full-size people — along
with a smaller (or very flexible) passenger behind the
driver’s seat.
Keeping the iQ on the go

four with a continuously
variable transmission. Factor in a low 960-kilogram
curb weight, and you’ve got
miserly fuel economy numbers of 5.5L/100 km in the
city and 4.6 on the highway.
Safety is augmented by an
impressive 11 airbags, and
standard features include air
conditioning, remote keyless entry, power windows
and outside mirrors, and a
leather-wrapped adjustable
steering wheel with controls
for the 160-watt Pioneer

The iQ can also be tarted
up with sport wheels, suspension and body plastic; a
premium audio package is
another option.
S
mall cars have traditionally been favoured
by budget-conscious consumers. Their
price tags tend to be lower, and they’re often among the least thirsty at the pumps.
Yet the knock against the sub-compact
and compact segments has been safety.
Not anymore, say automakers.
Today’s new small vehicles are arguably the
safest they’ve ever been, says Russ Rader with the
Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in the U.S.
“There are currently 29 small and mini-car
models that have earned the top crash test rating
for 2012. That tells you how much safety has
improved — there are so many choices,” he says.
“Even though crash tests have gotten tougher,
more vehicles are excelling.”
The 2012 Fiat 500 is among the smallest vehicles
to hit showrooms in recent years. While its European version has been a mainstay on that continent’s roads for some time, it needed a few safety
modifications before it could hit the pavement in
North America.
That included additions such as seven standard
airbags and four-wheel antilock disc brakes, says
Ed Brodbear with Chrysler Canada, which sells
Fiat.
“Then we added in the electronic safety systems
on the vehicle like the electronic stability system,
traction control and active headrests, all of which
are standard,” he says.
Volvo, meanwhile, has pulled out all the stops with
its smallest offering, the C30, pictured below.
The diminutive three-seater features, among other
things, emergency braking assist, a Whiplash Protection System and even a system that delays incoming phone calls in traffic situations that require
the driver's attention.
Many of these innovations were

more protective,” he says.
“Small cars have also become
heavier over time, which also helps reduce the risk
to occupants during crashes, because weight is also
a safety advantage.”
In the future, expect to see more crash prevention
systems, such as collision warning, in small cars,
adds Rader.
“They may be a luxury now, but they will quickly
become available on more mainstream cars,”
he says.

PORSCHE 911
When is a Porsche 911 not
a 911? The correct answer is
never, of course. And with
each new variation, Porsche
makes certain that the 911
will always be recognized
for the icon that it is.
For the 2012 model year,
the German automaker is
offering brand-new coupes,
with a wide variety of
convertibles and fixed-roof
models scheduled to follow
within the next year or two.
The base 911 Carrera
boasts a 350-horsepower
3.4-litre horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine,
smaller and more powerful
than last year’s model.
The 911 Carrera S ups
the ante to 400 h.p. Both
engines can be mated to
a first-ever seven-speed
manual transmission, or
optional seven-speed twinclutch automatic that delivers split-second shifts. The
base 911’s 0-to-100-km/h
time is listed at 4.6 seconds;
the Carrera S shaves half a
second off that.
The 911’s new sheetmetal gives the coupe a contemporary appearance, with
dramatically flared fenders,
a wider stance and almost
no gap between the wheels
and the fender openings.

Some vehicles resonate with drivers; the Bentley Continental GT is no exception
Auto insiders give their thoughts on what’s stood out in 2012 so far
By MILES DURRIE
By Gerald vander Pyl
here are certain names in the
auto world that resonate — that
evoke more than just recognition, an image or a price-point.
Some are icons of an era. Even
if you can’t picture the cars themselves, longgone brands such as Duesenberg, Stutz and
Packard paint a mental picture of the American Prohibition, 1920s and ’30s gangsters,
rumbling engines and fiercely contested
racing campaigns. “Rolls-Royce” equals
“wealth” — stately, silent, sedate, expensive.
Then there’s Bentley. With roots in motoring’s distant past, the Bentley name can
as easily bring up an image of open sports
cars driven to multiple race victories by
E
very year, the Automobile Journalists
Association of Canada pores over
hundreds of cars, analyzing dozens
of features, to come up with its Car of
the Year awards.
But we wanted to know from some of today’s top
auto insiders what has impressed them in the 2012
model year. Here’s what they said:
• Greg Williams, automotive contributor to the
Calgary Herald and AJAC member. Williams has
always been a fan of wagons, which are quietly
disappearing as many manufacturers instead focus
on their hatchback designs.
So his favourite vehicle for 2012 is the Cadillac
CTS-V sports wagon, which is equipped with a 556h.p. supercharged V-8 engine.
Foregoing fuel efficiency for outright power and
handling, he says it’s a hot rod of a station wagon,
“and everybody needs a hot rod now and then.”
Honourable mention goes to another wagon, the
2012 Mini Clubman, which has unique twin rear
“barn doors” for easy access to the storage space,
along with the great handling Minis are known for.
• Clare Dear, AJAC president and auto writer for the
National Post: Dear says Hyundai has impressed a lot
of journalists with its lineup of new vehicles, including the 2012 Elantra, pictured below, which was
just picked North American Car of the Year and is
also a finalist for AJAC Car Of The Year.
Hyundai has come a long way since the days of
the Pony model, and the 2012 Elantra has styling
that takes affordable family cars to a whole new
level, he says.
On a less practical note, Dear’s honourable
mention “wish list” for 2012 includes the
Mustang Boss 302, which he says appeals to
his nostalgia for muscle cars, and offers some
of the best performance bang for the buck on
the market.
• Malcolm Gunn, vice-president of Wheelbase
Communications Ltd, a company that provides auto
content for newspapers and websites. Gunn says the
midsize sedan category is the “bread and butter”
for a lot of manufacturers, making his car of the
year the made-in-North-America 2012 Volkswagen
Passat.
Gunn says being designed and built for the local
market has made the Passat a serious competitor to
traditional midsize Canadian favourites such as the
Toyota Camry and Honda Accord.
• Amee Reehal, AJAC member and founder of
TractionMag.ca. Reehal’s car of the year goes to
the redesigned 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK 350
Roadster.
He says the SLK 350 Roadster has as a beefier and
more aggressive look and styling than the previous
version, especially in the front end.
Honourable mentions go to the Kia Sportage SX
and Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid.
T
swashbuckling men in goggles and scarves
as that of the big, powerful luxury autos
the company creates today at its plant in
Crewe, England.
The Bentley Continental GT coupe and
GTC convertible are a modern expression
of the Bentley vision: uncompromising
quality, comfort and size with a sporting
character — cars built to be driven.
New for 2012 is the Continental’s 4.0-litre V-8 engine, available as an alternative to
Bentley’s proven 6.0-L 12-cylinder motor.
Company officials are thrilled about the
new engine, which is bristling with microprocessors and efficiency-increasing systems.
Although there are now two V-8 powerplants in the Bentley stable (the 6.75-L unit
in the Mulsanne is the other), the 12-cylinder
engine remains the ultimate expression of
Bentley engineering. The W-12-engined
Continental range has racked up more than
50,000 sales since 2003, making Bentley the
world’s largest maker of 12-cylinder engines.
Perhaps it’s the W-12’s familiarity that
makes the new motor more exciting, as
Bentley chairman and CEO Wolfgang
Dürheimer calls the 4.0 V-8 a completely
new driving experience.
“The new engine will have all the exhilarating power, drama and performance you
would expect … complemented by exceptional fuel efficiency,” he says.
We’re not sure how important fuel economy is to the average Bentley buyer, but if
the past is any indication, this new-school
Bentley will soon gain its own aficionados.

have been flashed in front of captive audiences for years. In many cases, they have
become as much characters on television

And, if these vehicles don’t sell out before the

most beloved and recognized hot rods of yesteryear
are collector’s items today.
“It’s a broad audience — huge,” says BMW
Canada spokesman Robert Dexter. “We wouldn’t be
spending the money to do it if we didn’t think it was
going to increase sales.”
Here’s a quick recap of Hollywood’s biggest

• James Bond: From BMWs to Aston Martins and
the occasional Mustang, James Bond has always
shown great taste in cars. Bond’s most famous set
of wheels was a 1964 Aston Martin DB5, driven in
Goldfinger and Thunderball, among others. These
days, coming across a DB5 is rare. Only about
1,000 were produced. No word yet on Bond’s latest
wheels in the upcoming flick Skyfall.
• Transformers: What kid didn’t want a car that
could transform into something much cooler? This
children’s toy, first produced in 1984 by Hasbro,
made the jump back into popular culture in 2007
and hasn’t looked back since, with actor Shia
LeBeouf sharing the screen with a 2011 Chevrolet

Today’s trucks sport all the bells and whistles their predecessors lacked
By DAVID MENZIES
F
rom a car buff’s perspective, there’s a
fascinating line of dialogue from a vintage
episode of Miami Vice. Det. Sonny Crockett (Don Johnson) vents to his boss that
the lacklustre vehicle he’s using to pose as
a drug kingpin just isn’t getting the job done.
“It’s been one month — one month! — since
the Daytona bit the dust,” says Crockett, referring
to his dearly departed Ferrari. “And I’m trying to
maintain a departmentally approved cover here,
and if I keep showin’ up for six-figure drug deals
lookin’ like Lil Abner , it ain’t gonna cut it!”
A jump cut later, Crockett’s shiny new ride is revealed: an ivory-hued Ferrari Testarossa — and all is
forgiven. As for the vehicle Crockett was complaining about? A pickup truck.
This episode originally aired in 1986. Much has
changed since the days of leg warmers and big
hair. Indeed, the pickup truck, previously a vehicle
driven almost exclusively by farmers and construction workers, is a different kind of animal today.
Oh sure, a full-sized pickup truck still features rugged engineering and four-wheel drive and plenty
of utility, thanks to beds that can accommodate
everything from sheets of plywood to major appliances. But today’s pickup also features all the
creature-comfort accoutrements found in the finest
luxury sedans — from multi-level heated seats to
DVD players for back-seat passengers.
And with good reason: pickup trucks are no longer exclusively being driven by tradespeople.

jumped to more than 250,000

Several reasons contribute to the
growth, says DesRosiers. Today's trucks are very
car-like in terms of the options available. As well,
many consumers realize there’s far more utility in a
pickup truck than a sport utility vehicle.
While a full-size pickup isn’t exactly a fuel miser,
DesRosiers adds that’s not an issue with most buyers, given that pickup trucks have excellent resale
values and typically lower insurance costs.

VERANO
A compact Buick? Yes —
the new-for-2012 Verano is
the Buick for people who
never considered driving
one in the past.
It’s smaller, sharper and
more efficient than just
about anything ever sold
under the Buick name, and
it points to a new direction
for the marque.
The Verano, based on the
Chevrolet Cruze platform,
upholds the Buick tradition of peace and comfort,
with special “quiet-tuned”
intake and exhaust systems
and extra layers of sound
absorption throughout —
including extra-thick windshield and side-window
glass to keep the noise
outside.
Available wood trim and
cushy leather seats add to
the comfort factor. Dualzone climate control is
standard; add the optional
heated steering wheel to
take the chill off those
colder mornings.
The Verano is powered by
a 177-horsepower 2.4-litre
four, mated to a six-speed

Priced below its Regal
and LaCrosse stablemates,
this little Buick is looking to
turn doubters into drivers.
B
e it ever so humble, there’s so much
that’s so laudable about the de rigueur
minivan.
Yet, for reasons that remain inexplicable, this vehicle continues to suffer
from a woeful image problem.
While the minivan should be hailed for its awesome utility and excellent value, instead, so many
mock this vehicle as being akin to the white flag of
suburban surrender.
While sales have continued to decline over the
years, there’s one design element of the ever-marginalized minivan that has thrived: that cherished
third row of seats — a commuting necessity when
more than five people want to come along for the
ride.
In fact, the recent rapid rise of the crossover has
much to do with the minivan’s demise. Since so many
crossover vehicles now offer a third row of seats in addition to car-like handling, this has made the minivan
obsolete in the eyes of many consumers.
“Consumers still want better utility, better power,
and better use of interior space, including that third
row of seats,” says Dennis DesRosiers, president
of DesRosiers Automotive Consultants. “And the
marketplace has responded with more and more
crossover products offering third-row seating.”

(sometimes eight), crossovers are jam-packed with
utility, too. Example: a typical feature of crossovers
and SUVs with third-row seating is the seats fold
down, thereby creating extra cargo space when
inanimate objects outnumber passengers.
“Lately, the soccer moms have been moving away
from small vans in a big way,” says DesRosiers.
It should be noted that not all third-row seats are
the same. Some are relatively flimsy compared to
the vehicle’s first and second rows of seats.
And some third rows only offer ample leg room if

you are what you drive
What you get behind the wheel of says a lot about you
By Suzanne Beaubien
LEXUS GS
When the 2013 Lexus
GS series was unveiled late
last year at the Los Angeles
Auto Show, company officials explained that the
vehicles’ bold, elegant,
aerodynamic exterior was
symbolic of the performance, precision and technology within.
The GS 350, GS 350 F
Sport and GS 450h focus on
the driver, with aggressive
power, a six-speed paddleshifted transmission and
a choice of four “driving
modes,” putting the priority
on the environment, performance or in between.
When it comes to the
environment, the GS 450h
model is leading the charge
to set a new standard in low
emissions and high performance, with 338 horsepower and a zero-to-96km/h time of 5.6 seconds
making it the world’s fastest
mass-produced hybrid —
along with SULEV II certification (Super-Ultra Low
Emissions Vehicle II).
And it’s not just about the
person behind the wheel,
though; passengers are
afforded spacious accommodations, with generous
headroom, legroom, knee
room and foot space.
T
hink you know what kind of person drives
a Porsche? How about a Cadillac?
While the average Cadillac driver does
have a couple decades on his neighbour
with the Porsche (who’s historically most
likely to be a man), times are changing when it
comes to luxury autos and the drivers who love
them, says Jessica Caldwell, senior auto analyst
with Edmunds.com.
Luxury vehicle owners continue to be older, affluent and urban. A recent study by price-tracking
website Truecar.com found the most senior among
them favour domestic automakers like Lincoln, Cadillac and even premium Buick models.
Likewise, if a BMW M3 sedan pulls up behind you,
it’s most likely driven by a member of Generation X.
And if you own a Porsche Boxster, pictured
below, or BMW 6 Series Convertible, you’ll have
a hard time claiming you’re any younger than 48
(the study found Baby Boomers are most likely to
be behind the wheel of those two cars, at 84 and
79.8 per cent, respectively).
But new products are poised to blur the distinctions between these brands and their devotees,
says Caldwell. Recently at the Detroit Auto Show,
Cadillac debuted its new ATS, a rear-wheel-drive
sedan designed to go head to head with the BMW
3-Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class — entry-level
luxury sedans that make up a large part of the
growing market segment.
“I think having a smaller vehicle

adds Caldwell.
Further, leasing options are letting younger buyers with lower incomes into the growing entry-level
luxury segment, adds Caldwell. More than half of
the BMW 3-Series vehicles on the road in the U.S.
were leased, she says.

PROUDLY SERVING
SOUTHERN ALBERTA FOR 10 YEARS !
Knowing the difference between ABS and AWD is as easy as ABC
By DAVID MENZIES
A
utomakers seem to adore
acronyms. Indeed, an owner’s
manual can look like split
alphabet soup thanks to the
plethora of acronyms and abbreviations pertaining to various types of
automotive technologies.
What does it all mean, you ask? Read on...
• ABS: Anti-lock Braking System. ABS
gives the driver better control during hard
braking by pulsing the vehicle’s brakes
in a rapid-fire mode. In the not-so-good
old days, a driver slamming on the brakes
would halt the wheels’ rotation completely. This would result in no traction
and no ability to steer around a hazard.
ABS effectively eradicates this problem.
• AWD: All-Wheel-Drive. An AWD drive
train provides power to all four wheels
rather than just the front (FWD) or rear
(RWD) two wheels. An AWD system will
provide enhanced handling capabilities.
• CVT: Continuously variable transmission is a transmission that can change
(without help) through an infinite number of effective gear ratios between maximum and minimum values. This contrasts
with other mechanical transmissions that
offer a fixed number of gear ratios.
• ESP/ESC: Electronic Stability Program
or Electronic Stability Control. Some systems
apply the brakes to selected wheels if sensors
detect slip; other systems selectively apply
or cut power. In either case, the goal is to
prevent spins from occurring and keep the
driver going in the intended direction.
• HEV: Hybrid Electric Vehicle. A type
of vehicle that combines a conventional
internal combustion engine propulsion
system with an electric propulsion system
(i.e., Toyota Prius.)
• HP: Horsepower. Units of measurement of power.
• SIPS: Side Impact Protection System.
Several airbags/air curtains that deploy
beside passengers when a crash occurs.
SIPS can also refer to specific chassis
strengthening measures within the doors.
• SRS: Supplemental Restraint System.
Airbags, which are “supplementary” to
seatbelts.
• TC: Traction Control. A TC system detects any slippage of the tires on a slippery
surface, cutting or reducing power accordingly even if the driver has the pedal
to the metal. A traction control system
will result in less wheel spin, which gives
the driver far more control of the vehicle.

INDUSTRY
behind the scenes
E
every year, the Automobile
Journalists Association of Canada
(AJAC) selects the best new
vehicles in a cross-section of
categories, including overall
Car of the Year.
The work that goes into selecting the
model year’s top cars — used by many
consumers as a basis for their next purchase
— involves more than just journalists picking their favourite cars, says AJAC’s Gerry
Malloy, director of the Canadian Car of the
Year awards program.
First, eligible vehicles are selected.
“The cars that qualify are actually newly
designed cars, or redesigned cars, as opposed to just annual model year changes,”
says Malloy.
Then, the real fun begins. Seventy to
80 automotive journalists from across the
country gather in Ontario for a four-day
intensive evaluation of more than 150
vehicles, in a process AJAC has dubbed
“TestFest.”
Team members rate the vehicles by secret ballot on more than 20 separate evaluation parameters, ranging from comfort
and convenience to steering/handling and
safety features.
“Within each vehicle category, the ratings
are given a weighting that may be different,” says Malloy.
“For example, in a small car, fuel economy will be more important than it will be
in a sports car, and performance less important, and so on.”
The testing takes place every October.
The vehicles are driven both on public roads
GT
and off-road test sites, including three runways of the Niagara District Airport.
Performance tests evaluate how fast the
cars accelerate and decelerate. At the end
of testing, final scores are adjusted based on
the vehicle’s price.
The results offer consumers sophisticated, comparative information in a range
of vehicle categories.
Malloy says the lists allow consumers to
make informed decisions when purchasing
a new vehicle.
“If a consumer decides that the winning
vehicle won because it had a better acceleration for example, and that’s not particularly important to their decision-making
process, they can pick and choose what is,”
he says.
Detailed lists of the 2012 winners are

About the CMDA
Association maintains deep ties to the community
C
algary’s gradual transportation evolution from horsepower to automobiles began
more than a century ago,
with the first automobile
dealership being established in the city in
approximately 1915. Few, if any, Calgarians at that time could have imagined the
dramatic growth the Calgary automotive
industry would experience over the ensuing 100-plus years.
Today, more than 4,000 people are employed directly within new-car-and-truck
dealerships in the city in a wide range of
professions from finance, computer and
IT, automotive maintenance and repair,
sales, management and a host of others.
Salaries and commissions alone paid to
those employees total in the hundreds of
millions of dollars, having an overall impact on the city’s economy approaching
— or surpassing — $1 billion annually.
The Calgary Motor Dealers Association,
formed in 1951, has 75 member dealerships representing 96 per cent of new
car-and-truck automotive dealerships
in Calgary.
Those dealerships generate a further
economic impact in Calgary of hundreds
of millions of dollars annually through the
purchase and sales of goods in the community. Additionally, dealer members
pay millions of dollars in property taxes
each year, enabling the city to undertake
infrastructure and other projects that
might otherwise not be possible.
But the full story of the members of the
Calgary Motor Dealers Association would
be incomplete without examining the
industry’s remarkable record of charitable
support for deserving groups and individuals in the city.
Over the many years of its existence,
car and truck dealerships in Calgary have
provided tens of millions of dollars in
charitable support to hundreds of charities in a board range of disciplines.
In the 60 years of the existence of the
CMDA alone, organized charitable endeavors by the industry have generated
many millions of dollars in donations.
The Calgary International Auto and
Truck Show, which has been staged annually for 30 years, also donates net revenues generated by the show to charity.
Another major charitable event undertaken by the CMDA is the Vehicles and
Violins Gala, which has raised more than
$2 million since 2000.
The Calgary auto and truck industry is
an active, vibrant, critical component of
the economic, social and charitable fabric
of our city, and the CMDA’s member
dealerships are extremely pleased to
continue to contribute, and to grow, with
this marvelous city.

When Kia launched its

But the Koup competes,

The Koup’s suspension

better high-speed stability and more direct feel

On the practical side, the

The list of standard features is impressive, with a

F
or auto aficionados who love shifting
gears, let’s collectively raise a toast to Eddie Alterman.
Alterman, the editor-in-chief of Car and
Driver magazine, launched a YouTube
public service campaign back in 2010 in which he
made a cheeky plea to “Save the Manuals” — the
transmission of choice for driving enthusiasts.
As Alterman notes, barely 10 per cent of the cars
on American roads today are equipped with a stickshift. And that’s a shame, given that, as Alterman
adroitly notes, cars with manual transmissions are
“fun, never accelerate unintentionally, and you can’t
tweet, text or play Mafia Wars while driving one.”
True confession: when I first viewed Alterman’s
plea to save the stick-shift, I reckoned his initiative
was a lost cause — a manual revival would surely
be about as likely as General Motors reviving the
Pontiac Aztek.
After all, thanks to the plethora of hand-held electronic gadgets today along with time-stressed commuters who dine as they drive, who’s got the time,
inclination or physical dexterity to change gears?
But a lot can happen in a couple of years. While the
manual may be on life support in North America, it
is not quite dead. In fact, automakers are bringing
back manuals in select models, and even featuring
stick-shifts in their advertising campaigns.
Indeed, check out the narration for the stickshift-equipped Cadillac CTS-V
coupe, pictured below: “Why did we

cess when a clutch pedal is part of the
motoring experience. As well, manual
transmissions tend to deliver slightly better fuel economy than their automatic cousins.
Perhaps the most noteworthy sign indicating that
there is a manual gearbox revival comes by way of
the Dodge Challenger. If purchasers of Chrysler’s
retro-themed muscle car desire a six-speed manual
transmission, that’s actually a $2,000 option —
quite the role reversal compared to yesteryear
when a consumer typically had to pony up extra
if he or she wanted the ride equipped with an
automatic transmission.

DRIVE BOLD
The Kia Forte is changing the face of Kia and setting new
benchmarks for compact sedans in Canada and around the
world. Forte’s styling is sporty and confident, its performance
is crisp and invigorating, and it comes with standard features
that no other car in its price range can match. That shouldn’t be
surprising from an automaker like Kia who is continually striving
to drive change. After all, that’s our forte.
CHRYSLER
300 SRT8
The 2012 300 SRT8, with
its new 6.4-litre Hemi V-8
engine, is Chrysler’s most
powerful sedan ever.
This imposing automobile
is no slouch when it comes
to handling, either, with an
adaptive suspension tuning
system that adjusts itself to
the road, and to driver input,
for optimal control.
That control is aided and
abetted by a paddle-shifted
five-speed automatic transmission, getting the Hemi’s
470 horsepower to the
ground with authority.
It gets better. Even with its
boosted power, torque and
displacement, the new 300
SRT8 delivers a 21 per cent
increase in fuel economy
over last year’s numbers.
The car differentiates
itself in style as well as
performance. It sits 1.27
centimetres lower than its
non-SRT brethren, and
features new side-sill cladding and a new front fascia
and grille.
From behind, the sedan
presents a unique lower fascia with chrome accent bar
and round dual exhaust tips.
The 300 is already a distinctive car; the SRT8 version takes it to a new level.

Once the forgotten child, today’s mid-size vehicle segment never looked so good.
By Shawn Hoult
T
he word mid-size doesn’t exactly conjure
up thoughts of sleek and sexy in auto
circles.
But yet, that’s exactly what’s happening as automakers continue to quietly
adding modern contours to four-door bodies,
filling the extra interior space with features and
gadgets and combining better fuel economy and
power under the hood.
And the best thing is these cars are still reliable,
responsible and safe — in fact, more so than ever.
While there are plenty of vehicles in the segment
to get excited about, here are a few of the current
standouts:
• Volkswagen Passat: The Passat has been
part of the VW family since 1973, and has seen
its share of overhauls. From the big hood in the
1970s, to the ’90s model that was a staple of college campuses, the Passat has come a long way.
The journey most recently landed the Volkswagen
mainstay the title of 2012 Motor Trend Car Of the
Year, with a new model that is as sophisticated as
anything the German manufacturer has built to
date.
• Ford Fusion: This is a car that has built its

get. With the 2011 line, Infiniti also
added a G25 model, which is a more
affordable version of the G35.
• Cadillac CTS: Between the CTS and highperformance CTS-V, Cadillac has found a spot on
the last five Car and Driver’s 10 Best Cars lists. In
only 10 short years, the CTS has already become
the jewel in the crown of Cadillac, which is high
praise indeed. The technology alone makes the
CTS seem like a car of the future — and if this is
what the future has in store, we have a lot to look
forward to.

MINI COOPER
COUPé
As Minis go, the newfor-2012 Coupé is the
Mini-est. It’s also historymaking, as the first-ever
two-seater from the halfcentury-old marque.
Still, it appears every inch
a Mini, especially the lower
body area, which looks
lifted from the classic Mini
production line.
The only key dimension
that has shrunk with the
Coupé is height.
Built using the strengthened and reinforced body
of the Mini Cabriolet, the
Coupé weighs about 25
kilograms more than its
four-passenger counterparts.
Despite the extra heft,
the Coupé is certainly the
sportiest of Minis, and the
suspension settings have
been adjusted to reflect this
characteristic.
Power comes from a base

The auto industry’s class of 2012 comes
with a mind-boggling array of gadgetry
to make your inner propeller hat spin — from parkassist to on-board hard-drives.
But an expert on innovation in the industry
suggests we haven’t seen anything yet.
“The automotive industry is hungry for innovation, and car IT will remain the major contributor to
innovation in the years to come,” says Dr. Juergen
Reiner, partner at Oliver Wyman in Munich.
He says three major trends will revolutionize the
driving experience in the near future.
The first is in-car IT that combines data from
existing and new sensors to make driving safer —
rear-view cameras, for example, which are already
standard on vehicles such as the Hyundai Veloster,
pictured below.
The emergence of technologies such as rear-view
cameras is courtesy of their plummeting costs, says
Chad Heard with Hyundai Canada.
“You can get a digital camera and pair that with
a standard-inch screen display,” he says. “Both of
those come rather inexpensively these days, so
you can offer that on a car that costs just under
$19,000.”
The second trend is car-to-car, real-time exchange
technology. Reiner says this includes traffic jam
warning, accident avoidance, autonomous driving
and parking, and intelligent navigation systems.
Some innovations such as park assist and collision
pre-warning are now options on many
mid-level vehicles — the new Dodge

able to drive in an autonomous way
while passengers are entertained with
the latest and greatest from the world of
apps, Internet and cloud technologies,” Reiner says.
Other innovations such as HUD (head-up display)
technology will bring science fiction to the real
world, making things we take for granted today,
such as dials and buttons, archaic.
“We are about to see revolutions in interior design, usability, and driver information — gestures,
voice recognition, eye-motion capture, even
blood-sugar monitoring — as technology is now
available to break paradigms of radio buttons and
mechanical km/h indicators,” he says.
