1. First turn off both your Modem and Router. Turn back on your Modem first, and then you’re
Router.
2. You will need to access your Routers Setup. You may find an icon on your desktop or under
Programs. You will need your Admin Username and Password if you have changed the default. If
you did not change the default, it should be, username: admin & password: password or leave it
blank.
3. From the Setup menu in your Router, perform a MAC address spoof (the info from NetGear
shown below, explains more on this task).
4. If this does not fix the issues you are experiencing with MLXchange, you may call NetGear
Support at 888-638-4327 and provide them with the Track ID of 46012 so they can walk you
through installing a firmware update instead.
How to change the MAC address of a Netgear Wireless-N router
Every device that connects to a TCP/IP network has a unique address, called a MAC address,
that identifies that device on the network. Your Netgear Wireless-N router has its own MAC
address, which is separate from your computer's MAC address.
Some Internet service providers require that the same MAC address that was used when your
account was set up remain in use, otherwise they might charge an additional fee. Therefore, if
you set up your Internet account when you only had one computer, but you've since gotten
another one and you want to use a router to manage your network and share the connection, your
ISP would charge you to make the change. Fortunately, you can get around this requirement by
having your router mask its MAC address and pretending to use your computer's MAC address.
(These instructions were written for a Netgear WNR834B v2 router, but they apply to other
models as well.)
Instructions:
Step 1
Log into the Netgear SmartWizard utility
Open a web browser and navigate to the IP address of your router. (Typically, the IP address is
192.168.1.1, unless you've changed it.) You may be asked to log in -- if so, enter your router's
username and password. (By default, these are "admin" and "password", respectively.)
Step 2
Go to Basic Settings
On the sidebar on the left side of the SmartWizard screen, click on Basic Settings (under Setup).
Step 3
Change the MAC address
Scroll down the Basic Settings page until you see the Router MAC Address section. You'll have
three options here:
- Use Default Address
- Use Computer MAC Address
- Use This MAC Address
The default address is the router's own MAC address, which is probably the option currently
selected. To use the MAC address of the computer you are on now, choose the second option. If
you know the MAC address you want to use but it's not the address of the computer you're using
right now, choose the third option and then enter the MAC address in the field to the right. Be
sure to use the standard MAC address format, with a colon (:) in between each pair of characters.
Step 4
Save the new setting
Once you've chosen the new MAC address setting, click on Apply at the bottom of the screen to
save the change.
