Thank you Howard for being a
dedicated volunteer driver
Howard
Radican
for the Iosco County Commission on Aging
in Tawas. Howard has been delivering the
Volunteer
home bound meals to our seniors in the
Driver
Tawas area since May of 2014. He drives the
meals to our client’s homes on an average of four
days a week, and when he isn’t delivering the meals, he is helping out
with maintenance around our Tawas Senior Center. Howard was born in
Indiana in 1958. He has an associate’s degree from Delta College and
a bachelor’s degree from Saginaw Valley State University. Howard has
had many different jobs, including cooking, working for the D.N.R. and
being an auto mechanic. Howard really enjoys hunting, working on
automobiles and spending time with his family. Howard is the father to
3 children and 4 step-children and has 9 grandchildren. We really
appreciate how much time Howard spends volunteering for us at the
Tawas Senior Center.

RED CABBAGE, CRANBERRY & APPLE SLAW
Ingredients:
• 1/3 cup rice wine vinegar
• 2 tablespoons white wine vinegar
• 1/3 cup granulated sugar
• 1 tablespoon olive oil
• 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
• 5 cups red cabbage, thinly sliced
(about 1 1/2 pounds)
• 1/2 cup dried cranberries
• 2 large Granny Smith apples
• 1/2 cup pecans, chopped and toasted
Instructions:
Whisk together the vinegars, sugar,
olive oil, and salt in a large mixing bowl.
Add the cabbage and cranberries;
toss to coat.
Cover & chill for 2 hours.
Just before serving, core and then
thinly slice the apples. Add the apple
slices and pecans to the salad and
toss well to combine.
Surprising Health Benefits of Cabbage – Cabbage is powerful!
Ancient healers declared it contained moon power because it grew in the moonlight.
Modern nutritional science understand its power comes from its high sulfur and vitamin C content.
IDEAL FOR WEIGHT LOSS! – A cup of cooked cabbage has only 33 calories.
It is low in fat and high in fiber.
IT’S A BRAIN FOOD! – It is full of vitamin K and anthocyanins. These help with mental function
and concentration, improving your defenses against Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
HELPS DETOXIFY THE BODY – High in sulfur, the beautifying mineral. Sulfur is essential for
keratin, a protein substance necessary for healthy hair, nails and skin.
IS WELL KNOWN AS A CANCER PREVENTATIVE – Compounds lupeal, sinigrin and
sulforaphane stimulate enzyme activity and inhibit the growth of cancer tumors.
HELPS KEEP BLOOD PRESSURE FROM GETTING HIGH – The high potassium
content helps by opening up blood vessels, easing the flow of blood.
CABBAGE FOR HEADACHES – Crush cabbage leaves;
place in a cloth and apply on the forehead.
ANTI-INFLAMMATORY AND BLOOD SUGAR REGULATOR
The natural red pigments of red cabbage are said to lower blood
sugar levels and boost insulin production.

Changes to BCBS Legacy Medigap Plans
The Blue Cross Blue Shield Legacy Medigap plans A and C will no longer be locked into the price of $122.86
for Plan C and $40.42 for Plan A. After a 5 year price freeze, things will be changing. You should have received from Blue Cross, a notice of what your new price will be along with information on subsidies that
could help with the new cost of the plan. Some key changes in Plan C are as follows:
SOME KEY CHANGES IN PLAN C ARE AS FOLLOWS
• It will close to new enrollment on November 14, 2016
• Current members can keep their plan by continuing to pay their bill on time.
• Rates will not be adjusted until January 2017
• New rates are based on age, gender and geography
• If you decide to switch plans you WILL NOT have guaranteed issue rights.
Guaranteed issue rights (also called “Medigap protections”) are rights you have in
certain situations when insurance companies must offer you
certain Medigap policies in these situations, an insurance company:
Must sell you a Medigap policy
Must cover all your pre-exis!ng health condi!ons
Can’t charge you more for a Medigap policy because of
past or present health problems
It is important to understand that you will not have these protecons
if you drop your Legacy plan to enroll in another Medigap plan.
