Would you choose your natural son, or the son you
believed was yours after spending 6 years together?
Koreeda Hirokazu, the globally acclaimed director of
Nobody Knows, Still Walking and I Wish, returns to the big
screen with a heart-rending exploration of the meaning
of parenthood. Ryota believes nothing can stop him from
pursuing his perfect life as a winner. When he receives
a phone call from the hospital where his son was born,
he is forced to make a life-changing decision. Seeing his
wife’s devotion to Keita, their 6-year-old son, even after
learning his origin, Ryota also starts to question himself:
has he really been a ‘father’ all these years?

Oscar-nominated for co-writing Before Sunset, Julie Delpy
writes, directs and stars in a sweetly autobiographical
and fearlessly bawdy comedy about a family's boozy
get-together in Normandy. It’s the summer of 1979. High
above the earth, the space station Skylab is out of control.
And somewhere in Brittany, so is Albertine, a precocious
eleven-year-old making her transition into teenage life
and love while her extended family drinks, dances, fondles
and fights all around her. This award-winning comedy
– part Wes Anderson, part Truffaut – is like a miniature
French summer holiday in the dark of a London autumn.

Josiane Balasko's latest film, in which she reunites with
Michel Blanc, is a touching portrait of familial bonds,
and features stunning central performances. Nénette
(Josiane Balasko) is a little girl aged 60. A problem at
birth made her different. Nénette has a mental age of
eight, and has always lived with her mother, who raised
her alone. She has a job as a cleaner in the village
school, and her best friend is a tortoise. But when her
mother dies, everything changes, and Nénette has to go
into a retirement home. The home doesn’t allow pets
so Nénette heads off with her suitcase and her tortoise
to look for her father. When Nénette finally arrives at
the address, she discovers a pharmacy, and not her
father but her father’s son, Paul Bérard (Michel Blanc),
an uptight pharmacist who is thrown into a panic by the
arrival of his half-sister.

Guillaume Nicloux's adaptation of Diderot's classic novel is a visually elegant and
engaging period piece with a terrific central performance. It tells the story of a young
woman trying to resist imposed religious values, revealing the dehumanizing effect of
cloistered life. France, in the 1760s. Born into a bourgeois family, Suzanne is a beautiful
young girl with a natural talent for music. She is dismayed when her parents send her
off to a convent, expecting her to become a nun. She soon wants to escape the religious
path until she meets the new Mother Superior (Isabelle Huppert), who develops an
inappropriate affectionate bond with her…
Winner of the Palme d'Or at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, Blue Is the Warmest Colour
is a minutely detailed, searingly erotic three-hour study of first lesbian love. At 15, Adele
doesn’t question it: girls go out with boys. Her life is changed forever when she meets
Emma, a young woman with blue hair, who will allow her to discover desire, to assert
herself as a woman and as an adult.

Written and originally adapted to the screen by Marcel Pagnol, the now-classic version
is brilliantly directed by Daniel Auteuil, with graceful performances and beautifully
rendered scenery. Marius only dreams of discovering the South Seas. But Fanny, who
has been secretly in love with Marius since childhood, will do her best to prevent him
from leaving...
Fanny is the second part of Daniel Auteuil’s Marseilles Trilogy revival, which begins
where Marius ended. In love and abandoned, Fanny discovers that she is expecting a
child from Marius. She finally decides to marry a prosperous merchant from the Old
Port. Marius, who realises that he is in love with Fanny as he sails the seven seas,
comes home and tries to win her back... Like its predecessor, Fanny features glowing
performances from Auteuil, Belezy and Darroussin.

sexy assassin who nonetheless manages to awaken our
sympathy and who won't stop until she achieves her
revenge. Mollà delivers a virtuoso performance as the
merciless and vicious criminal. Written and produced by
Luc Besson, the creator of Nikita, the film is actionpacked and will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Essentially optimistic, Alberto Aranda's debut feature
focuses on Estrella, a cheerful young woman living in
the suburbs of Barcelona, but also examines the abuse
of women – a current concern in Spain. Benefiting from
the excellent performances of the lead actors, the film
touches upon Estrella's relationship with her ambitious
boyfriend, Salva, and with Trini, her best friend. The
simplicity of Estrella's life, with her desire to help and love
of music, spreads happiness to those around her.

Through Antonio Machado's poems, Chapero Jackson
leads us through the poet's life in an exceptional
documentary, subtly mixing poetry and contemporary
dance. One of the most respected poets in Spain and
one of the leading figures in the literary movement
known as the Generation of '98, Antonio Machado grew
up in a country in decline, humiliated after losing its
last colonies. However, he was inspired by the spirit of
men of letters such as Rubén Darío and Oscar Wilde,
who yearned to live an aesthetic existence in order to
foreground the soul in the face of growing materialism.

house brings to light an obscure episode that has been
haunting them for years...

An exquisite recreation of Bohemian Paris, this highly
entertaining film by Colomo, a Spanish director who is
well known for his fresh, unpretentious comedies, also
benefits from José Luis Alcaine's splendid photography.
The recipe is simple: take Picasso, Apollinaire, Manolo,
Braque, Max Jacob and Gertrude Stein, and mix in the
robbery of the 'Mona Lisa' from the Louvre. The result is a
good-humoured view of the jealousies and intrigues that
can arise between very colourful characters...

A mysterious epidemic spreads around
the world, with victims unable to venture
into the open, causing irrational fear and
eventually death. As chaos engulfs the
city of Barcelona, Marc sets off on a quest
to find his girlfriend Julia with the help of
Enrique, a seemingly ruthless consultant
who has arrived at Marc's company
as part of a restructuring plan. This
apocalyptic thriller features impressive
views of Barcelona, and exquisite
performances by Coronado and Gutiérrez.
A theatre group is rehearsing a play when
they're suddenly interrupted by the sound
of an alarm that leaves them isolated and
with no possibility to communicate with
the exterior. An interesting exercise born
of the collaboration between real actors
and prisoners from the Quatre Camins
prison in Barcelona, this film, shot in
the prison, explores the fear of losing
one's freedom of movement as well as
the conflicts that come up within a group
of people, and the subjectivity of guilt or
innocence.

One of Spain’s most exportable talents,
Mollà started acting in 1988 and shortly
afterwards his career took off when he
starred in what was soon to be considered
a cult movie, Jamón, jamón alongside
Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem. His
performances, invariably compelling and
authentic, range from dark characters
with nuanced perverse twists to shy,
tormented types and have won him
several awards both at home and abroad,
making him one of the most outstanding

Shot in the aridity of Zaragoza's desert,
Jamón, jamón – which juxtaposes erotic
desire and food – explores the complex
relationship between Silvia (Cruz), the
daughter of a roadside prostitute, her
boyfriend José Luis (Mollà), son of the
richest man in town, and Raúl (Bardem),
a would-be bullfighter attracted to Silvia.
It also lays bare the aspirations and
frustrations of their parents. The film
was a big break for the three lead actors,
the then extremely young Jordi Mollà,
Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem.

A reflection on the opportunities offered by
love, El amor no es lo que era tells us three
different love stories in the same city: a
re-encounter between two old lovers, two
youngsters trying to make a relationship
work and two others whose life together
does not make sense anymore. Playing
with the mathematical principle of

bodies will never go back to their point of

Bettie (Catherine Deneuve) is a former beauty queen
in her sixties. She runs a local bistro and lives with her
elderly mother. She learns from her the humiliating
news that her married lover has left his wife for another,
younger woman. The next day, still smarting from the
revelation, she gets into her car and starts driving. With
nods to Truffaut, Téchiné and Dupeyron, On My Way is
a love letter to screen icon Deneuve, although director
Emmanuelle Bercot doesn’t let her obvious infatuation
distract, grounding the film in a vérité style and employing
a contemporary soundtrack to reflect Bettie’s resilience

Writer-director Cherien Dabis makes
her big screen acting debut in May in the
Summer, a charming comedy drama about
a Christian Arab-American returning to
her native Jordan to marry her Muslim
boyfriend, much to her mother’s chagrin.
Dabis emits a breezy charisma in the title
role of May, the successful New York writer
torn between satisfying her mother’s
religious traditions while continuing to
maintain the independence she has
worked so hard to achieve. Dabis skilfully
avoids any sense of cliché or dramatic
stereotype by focusing on the abundant
humour in the culture clash.
Rebecca Zlotowski follows her impressive
2010 debut Belle Epine with a punchy,
compelling workplace drama. Tahar
Rahim plays Gary, who signs on for work
in a nuclear power plant. He’s inducted
into the workforce by supervisor Gilles and
hard-bitten veteran Toni, only to discover
that radiation contamination is not just a
risk factor but an everyday hazard. This
politically charged, somewhat Loachian
drama has the intensely satisfying
narrative drive of a Zola novel, as well as
echoing classic Hollywood blue-collar
dramas in the Howard Hawks vein.

The previous years have seen Syria go from
being one of the most politically stable
regimes in the Arab world to one that has
been torn apart by civil war. Malas initially
appears not to touch on the trauma of his
country, focusing instead on a love story.
Ghalia is inhabited by the soul of Zeina, a
girl who drowned the day she was born.
Haunted by Zeina’s past life, Ghalia travels
to Damascus to study acting. There she
meets a filmmaker who is fascinated by
her duality. Soon the events in the streets

Comic and tender in equal measure, this
fresh, no-frills feature is a comedy drama
about love, chance and storytelling that
gives the Nouvelle Vague an idiosyncratic
21st-century spin. Vincent Macaigne plays
the hirsute, self-effacing Arman, hoping
to change his life at 33, when he literally
bumps into Amélie and never looks back.
Inarguably a guys'-eye view of life and
love but also winning, literate and very

Coming-of-age films are rarely as
enjoyable, or as mischievous, as the
surprise audience hit of this year’s Cannes
Festival. Guillaume Gallienne shows what
it’s like to grow up as a boy when everyone
is convinced that you’re really a girl – or
should have been. Gallienne resembles
a cherubic cross between Harpo Marx
and Pee-Wee Herman, but with wit and
literacy à la Stephen Fry, and overall
proves a winning and unpredictable screen
presence.
A community of women await the return of
their submariner husbands at a rundown
military base on the Kola peninsula in
Russia. At the heart of the film is Lena,
who seems indifferent towards others
and, although she has been married only
a few months, has taken a lover. Ekaterina
Mavromatis’s screenplay, clearly inspired
by the Kursk tragedy, provides a sensitive
and understanding portrait of the waiting
women. Yusup Razykov’s Shame is a
profound and moving portrait of the human
reality behind a disaster that resonated
throughout the world.
The third part of filmmaker Roberto
Minervini’s loose Texan trilogy (after The
Passage and Low Tide) is a powerful drama
documentary. Set in a rural community
in southern Texas, the film focuses on
two real families, the Carlsons, who are
goat farmers with very strong religious
beliefs, and the Trichells, a less puritan
family whose passions are guns and rodeo
riding. At the heart of the film’s drama
is the burgeoning Romeo-and-Juliet
romance between the mildly rebellious
teenager Sara Carlson and her bull-riding
neighbour, Colby Trichell.

François Ozon returns with the story of
Isabelle, a 17-year-old student. After
losing her virginity during a brief holiday
romance, Isabelle returns home and, over
the course of the following year, embarks
on a secret life of prostitution. Jeune et jolie
explores the effects of rebellious teenage
behaviour on the moral ideologies of the
bourgeois family. Ozon’s unsensational
approach perfectly compliments the
youthful irreverence of his main character.
Pawel Pawlikowski’s new film is an elegy
for his homeland and an intimate, poetic
exploration of the limits of faith. Orphaned
during WWII, Anna was brought up in a
rural convent and in early 60s Poland is a
young novice preparing to take her vows.
When the Mother Superior insists she
make contact with her last remaining
relative, she meets her aunt Wanda,
a free-living intellectual working as a
judge and secretly annihilating painful
memories with a heady mix of sex and
booze. Their encounter lifts the shroud off
the dark secret of their family’s past.
Third time out, Xavier, now 40 and newly
divorced, follows his English ex-wife Wendy
(Reilly) to New York to be near their kids,
trying, yet again, to start over. Without
missing a beat, Cédric Klapisch picks up
his freewheeling relationship saga, the
Big Apple proving fruitful terrain for his
whimsical look at life, love, art and culture
clashes. Klapisch’s trademark inventive
visuals frame both slapstick melodrama
and soulful sincerity.
Screening with Likeness (dir. Rodrigo
Prieto, 2012, 9 mins)
Actress Valeria Golino makes her debut
as film director with this impressive
topical drama. Irene, aka Honey, is
an independent young woman with a
seemingly uncomplicated life and a large
social network. But, in fact, it’s all a sham:
a front for a complex secret existence
‘helping’ terminally ill people to end their
lives. When she is called to an assignment
where all her convictions are challenged,
everything changes. Honey is a carefully
balanced, distinctive movie that avoids
being agitprop for either side of the
euthanasia debate.

A loving family is forced apart by the
outbreak of World War II but, before
leaving to fight, the father gives his twin
13-year-old boys a notebook and instructs
them to write down their everyday
experiences. They are left with their
grandmother in a Hungarian border village
but the bitter old woman takes a hostile
attitude towards them and they experience
the violence of local life. The film shows
how the children, transformed by their
negative experiences, deliberately inure
themselves to physical and emotional pain.
A portrait rather than a biopic, Camille
Claudel 1915 depicts the troubled sculptor
(Juliette Binoche) as an inmate of an
asylum near Avignon. Camille lives a
seemingly uneventful life among the other
inhabitants of the institution with whom
she enjoys a quietly tender intimacy. Then
she receives a visit from her brother,
visionary Catholic poet Paul Claudel. Their
relationship and Camille’s internment
form the basis of a challenging inquiry
into madness, the clinical system and the
nature of religious and artistic inspiration.
Structured as a day-in-the-life in the
workings of Radio France, this latest gem
from the great French documentarist
Nicolas Philibert provides illuminating
access into a mysterious world. As
his perceptive camera observes the
preparation and recording of the news and
sports reports, drama and documentaries,
quizzes and concerts, chat shows and DJ
sessions broadcast by the station’s various
channels, it’s funny, touching and visually
exhilarating.

Liso has recently been released from a
psychiatric clinic. He is vulnerable and
insecure, but is trying to adapt to life
back at home. His overbearing mother
and his distant father offer one model of
family life, while his grandmother and
the family’s Bolivian servant present an
alternative vision. Encounters with two exgirlfriends suggest possible violence and,
certainly, unpredictable behaviour, but the
film refuses to pass any kind of judgement
on Liso. Rather, the focus is on showing
this young man trying to make some kind
of sense of his life.
Algerian filmmaker Merzak Allouache
continues his creative purple patch with
The Rooftops, a vividly drawn portrayal of
a day in the life of his native capital city
Algiers. Allouache employs an ingenious
structure by focusing on five iconic
rooftops set across the five different daily
Muslim calls to prayer. Setting all the
action above the bustling streets allows
Allouache to subvert the usual sense of
claustrophobia and urban confinement
and instead to paint Algeria’s myriad civil
tensions against a seemingly clear sky.

was the only surviving ‘Jewish Elder’
appointed by the Nazis to run the ghetto
camp at Theresienstadt, Czechoslovakia.
Condemned after the war as a
collaborator, Murmelstein explains, the
terrible accommodation he had to strike
with a murderous regime. In this new
documentary, Lanzmann shows the
same unblinking, sorrowful precision that
marked Shoah.
An intelligent, distinctive spin on the

auspicious debut of Louis Malle's daughter Justine. To
cap it all watch out for the much anticipated final part of
the Pot Luck (L'Auberge espagnole) trilogy Chinese Puzzle
from Cédric Klapisch - and so much more.
This first live action feature from Belleville Rendez-Vous
director Sylvain Chomet is a charming comedy full of
wry humanism and musical interludes. Guillaume Gouix
plays Paul, a sweet man-child who lost his memory
and the ability to speak when he witnessed the death
of his parents at a very young age. Now 33, he still lives
with his two eccentric aunts..Paul leads a monotonous
life until his upstairs neighbour offers him a concoction
that unlocks repressed memories. With nods to Buster
Keaton and Jacques Tati, Chomet's graceful feature
is a whimsical comedy about time passing, memories
recalled, and the ephemeral beauty of life.
Jacques Demy's debut feature is a bittersweet ode to
first love and missed opportunities. Beautifully shot by
Raoul Coutard (shortly after his work on Breathless)
in widescreen and luminous black and white, the film
stars a radiant Anouk Aimée, a cabaret-dancer forced

of cavalier Pierre Durand and his steed, Jappeloup.
Paulette, played by former Nouvelle Vague muse the late

be making easy money by dealing in drugs, she decides

De Funès Forever is the engaging portrait of a multitalented man whose only wish was "to make adults
laugh as much as children." Louis de Funès not only kept
France laughing during his 40-year career but his fan
base continues to exist today all over the world. As only
a great comedian can, he had the talent to make people
laugh about the serious or the tragic of human life, and
even turn those subjects into comedy classics. Known
as 'the man with 40 faces a minute', Louis de Funès is
remembered in this documentary by his collaborators,
his family and especially by those comedians, among the
most successful today, who were inspired by him to go
into comedy.

selfish intellectual, and is caught up in the woes of youth.

From the director of Romantics Anonymous comes a
gloriously theatrical adaptation of Victor Hugo’s classic
novel, The Man Who Laughs. Gwynplaine has a scar on his
face, giving him a kind of permanent smile. Abandoned by
the Comprachicos, who had kidnapped and slashed his
face a few years earlier, he is taken in by Ursus together
with a beautiful blind girl, Déa. They move from village to
village, performing a show whose star is the now grownup Gwynplaine, until they discover that he is the heir to a
large and noble family. Giddy with this sudden wealth and
the carnal passions of a duchess, he distances himself
from the only two people who have ever loved him for
what he is.

On her way back from New York to Paris,
where she's soon to be married, Julie
finds herself sitting next to Antoine, an
attractive cad whom she dated 3 years
earlier. She'll do everything she can to
avoid him, whereas he's counting on
the 7-hour flight to win her back! It's an
opportunity for us to travel back in time
and witness their encounter, their love
affair, their break-up...
An elegantly simple family farming drama,
Le Démantèlement is a pastoral tale about
the end of an era. Gaby is a farmer, rearing
beautiful lambs on his family property, La
Ferme Gagnon. His two daughters, raised
like princesses, live far away in the big
city. When the eldest asks for money to
avoid the loss of her home, Gaby decides
to liquidate his beloved farm: the house,
the tools, the lambs and the land. Le
Démantèlement is a beautifully observed
narrative film, but more significantly it is
the heart-breaking record of a way of life
that is dissolving before our eyes.

Screened at the Directors' Fortnight
strand of Cannes 2013, Thierry de Peretti's
film is a quietly engrossing tale of crime
and punishment. Loosely based on
real events, Apaches takes place at the
southern tip of the Mediterranean island
of Corsica, birthplace of the film’s director.
Full of hormones, half-naked pool parties
and rash teenage decisions, this sexy
adolescent thriller centres on the theft
of an antique double-barreled shotgun,
drawing the viewer into an ever-tightening
noose of creeping dread and impending
tragedy.
Marion Hansel's delicate and richly
sincere road movie is a magnificently
mature piece of work driven by thoughtful
and engaging performances by Marilyne
Canto and Olivier Gourmet. Separated
for 15 years, 50-somethings Frans and
Lisa immediately drop everything when
they hear news that their son Jack has
fractured his leg. They set off for the
day-long drive from Brussels. There is
little animosity between the two, but as
the journey commences, old irritations
and habits begin to surface. What do they
still feel for one another? Indifference,
rancour, jealousy? Or perhaps complicity,
friendship… and, who knows, love?
Lorraine Lévy's third feature is a moving,
emotionally concise human drama
played with warmth and convinction
by a cast including stars Emmanuelle
Devos and Pascal Elbé. As he prepares
to join the Israeli army for his national
service, Joseph discovers he is not his
parents’ biological son, but that he was
inadvertently switched at birth with Yassin,
the son of a Palestinian family from the
West Bank. This revelation turns the
lives of these two families upside-down,
forcing them to reassess their respective
identities, their values and their beliefs.

separation, Ahmad comes back to Paris
from Tehran, upon his French wife Marie’s

unveiling soon a secret from their past...
In part a romantic comedy, Meeting Leila
follows a young woman – a perfume tester

to persuade her fiancé, Nader, to quit
smoking before their marriage. Kicking
this habit proves extremely challenging
for Nader, because he works as an

because he believes smoking has become
inextricably linked to his creative thought
process. The film takes us through
Nader's gently comical struggles while
providimg a charmingly honest look at the

Iranian family, a very personal exploration
of womanhood in post-revolutionary
Iran, this film deals with the trials of a

centres on this woman's marriage with

she tries to take revenge on the cheating
husband by making him jealous of her
relationship with her first suitor.

a brown envelope, unexpectedly passes
briefly through the hands of an array of
colourful characters, including an ex heavy

The film covers themes of loss, love,

all potentially solved, at least for the day,
by the use of the money to pay debts,
bribe, save and take lives, repent and buy
time. A thought provoking film, portraying

Charming, visually lush and consistently
surprising, Grigris is Haroun’s most
optimistic film to date. Despite his
paralysed leg, the eponymous hero (Démé)
dreams of being a dancer. What appears to
be the simple story of one man’s unlikely
achievement ultimately embodies an
utopian vision that reaches into a wider
discussion of the state of Africa.
Almost a decade after winning the Grand
Jury Prize at Sundance with The Hero,
Zézé Gamboa brings us a sardonic
historical drama about Joãozinho, a
good-hearted, apolitical con man who
pulls off a massive swindle at the expense
of the Portuguese colonial administration
the day before the Angolan independence
in the 70s. Soon after, he finds himself

this moving story of a man forced to fight against the

Michel Descombes is a watchmaker, whose tranquil life
is shattered when he learns that his son is wanted for

the result of stifling under the bourgeois lifestyle that he
has always championed.
Claude Sautet's romantic drama César et Rosalie

Few filmmakers could rival Maurice Pialat's facility for
transforming autobiographical material into the stuff of
Art, and his third feature-film, La Gueule ouverte, stands
as one of the director's most intensely personal and most
lacerating works. Monique Mélinand portrays a woman
in the late stages of terminal illness. She and her prone
body become the locus around which gather her son
Philippe, his wife Nathalie, and Monique's husband Roger.
In short order, Monique recedes into the background of
Philippe's and Roger's network of respective adulteries.
But as the final, crushingly eloquent succession of shots
starts to unreel, we are once more reminded that, in
the work of Maurice Pialat, that which seems absent
ultimately makes its presence felt with terrible force.
This French historical comedy/farce, loosely based on
Victor Hugo's play Ruy Blas, benefits greatly from having
Louis de Funès and Yves Montand in the roles of Saluste
and Blaze. Saluste is a nobleman who has been exiled
from court and sent to collect taxes in the countryside.
Blaze is his assistant, who manages to help the overtaxed
peasants behind his boss's back. When Saluste decides
to resume meddling in the monarch's affairs using Blaze
as his henchman, his schemes backfire badly.
