Dear Friends
It is my pleasure to submit to you the 2010 Junior Achievement Annual Report. The annual report will provide to you
a financial status of our organization and will have a special focus on our students and our volunteers. The relationship
between the two is what sets Junior Achievement apart from many other organizations and is the key to our proven
impact and ability to transform the lives of young people.
The JA volunteer brings the world of work into the classroom and makes a difference in the lives of every student they
teach by sharing their work and educational histories, which in turn affects a student’s point of view and perspective.
They begin to be more curious and to feel invested in their own educations and career paths. To the over 1,150 volunteers
who went into a classroom last year to deliver a JA program – thank you!
While as a nation we continue to struggle with a challenging economy, we are grateful for the commitment of our
partners that continue to support Junior Achievement and its mission to inspire and prepare young people to succeed
in a global economy. This year we had our own challenges at Junior Achievement as our local territory grew to include
towns and cities in Central Massachusetts as well as the entire state of New Hampshire. I’m proud that the staff and
volunteers met the needs of local educators as nearly 43,000 Junior Achievement students in our expanded region had
the benefit of learning about financial literacy, work readiness and entrepreneurship this year – and those lessons learned
will produce positive results for years to come.
As I finish my term as the Chairman of the JA Board of Directors, I remain optimistic about the future and know that
the commitment of each member of our Board of Directors and our Advisory Council is strong and steadfast. It is
through their dedication, and the support from local corporations and foundations, as well as the talented volunteers
who teach our programs that will map out the future success of this organization.
When we commit our time and support to young people, we all benefit! I’d like you to know that I am grateful for the
team in place at JA, our supporters and our volunteers, thank you.

All enjoyed as JA students took top honors alongside our 2010
Inductees to the Boston Business Hall of Fame. Individual
inductees included Baillie Aaron, Founder of Entrepreneurship
101, Ruth Bramson CEO of the Girl Scouts of Eastern
Massachusetts, and 2010 corporate inductees recognized were
PTC, REZ-1, Robert Half International and Wilmer Hale.
BOWL-A-THON
State Street Corporation sponsored The 2009-2010 Bowl-a-thon
Season and employees from over 15 local companies really did
“Strike It Big” for kids! At right, KPMG employees had a “ball”
bowling for JA Students!

ABOUT JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT
At JA, we bring the workplace into the
classroom. Hands-on, interactive lessons
taught by local business volunteers create
an experience for students that:
Junior Achievement is the world’s largest
in- and after-school practical business
education program. JA has a proven longterm impact on youth giving them a stake in
the free-enterprise system to create a better
workforce for tomorrow. This past year,
1150 business volunteers used JA developed
curriculum to educate 43,000 K-12 students
in Eastern and Central Massachusetts and in
the state of New Hampshire, with a focus on
reaching disadvantaged youth. The student
cost is covered by donors and friends,
making the program free for students,
schools and organizations to participate.

MIDDLE SCHOOL
Kindergarten - Ourselves® uses compelling
stories read aloud by the volunteer, along with
hands-on activities, to demonstrate helping,
working, earning, and saving.
JA Global Marketplace™ provides practical
information about the key aspects of the global
economy, what makes world trade work, and how
trade affects students’ daily lives. Includes take
home CD.
Grade 1 - Our Families® emphasizes the roles
people play in the local economy and engages
students with activities about needs, wants, jobs,
tools and skills, and interdependence.
Grade 2 - Our Community® explores the
interdependent roles of workers in a community,
the work they perform, and how communities
work.
Grade 3 - Our City® studies careers, the skills
people need to work in specific careers, and how
businesses contribute to a city.
Grade 4 - Our Region®introduces the relationship
between the natural, human, and capital resources
found in different regions and explores regional
businesses that produce goods and services for
consumers.
JA Economics for Success™ explores personal
finance and students’ education and career
options based on their skills, interests, and
values. Includes take home CD.
JA America Works™ focuses on the impact
of business and entrepreneurship on the
development of the United States during the
19th century.
JA It’s My Business™ teaches students in grades
6, 7, and 8 entrepreneurship skills through
innovative activities that focus on filling a need,
knowing your customer and product, and being
creative and innovative.
Grade 5 - Our Nation®provides practical information
about businesses’ need for individuals who can
meet the demands of the job market, including
high-growth, high-demand jobs. Introduces the
concept of globalization of business as it relates
to production materials and the need for students
to be entrepreneurial in their thinking to meet the
requirements of high-growth, high-demand careers
worldwide.

Programs
HIGH SCHOOL
JA TITAN™ provides students the opportunity
to run a virtual company using this web-based
program, making decisions on price, production,
marketing, capital investment and R&D.
JA Success Skills™ develops students’
interpersonal effectiveness by identifying their
personal skills and matching them with careers
in which they have an interest.
JA Careers with a Purpose introduces students
to the impor tance of seeking careers that
help them realize their life potential and noble
purpose.
JA Business Ethics fosters ethical decisionmaking in students as they prepare to enter the
workforce and global marketplace.
JA Company™ teaches students how to create
and run their own business with the help of
volunteers from the business community. The
program requires 12 weeks of instruction, with
weekly sessions 90-120 minutes in length.
JA Presents The NEFE High School Financial
Planning Program includes five JA volunteer-led
“wrap-around” lessons that build upon elements
introduced in the NEFE High School Financial
Planning Program which is taught by the teacher.
JA Banks in Action™ explores the principles of
the banking industry. Students learn to be smart
consumers, focus on basics of banking, play a
computer simulated deposit and loan rate game,
address assets and liabilities, and investments.
JA Economics™ gives students the chance to
examine the U.S. economic system, explore
business operations, study the emerging global
economy, and acquire knowledge and skills
necessary to function as competent citizens,
workers, and consumers.
AFTER AND OUT OF SCHOOL
JA It’s My Business™ teaches students in
grades 6, 7, and 8 entrepreneurship skills
through innovative activities that focus on filling a
need, knowing your customer and product, being
creative and innovative, and believing in yourself.
JA Company™ teaches students how to create
and run their own business with the help of
volunteers from the business community. The

JA Job Shadow is an academically motivating
education activity dedicated to giving middle and
high school students an up-close look at the world
of work.
JA Academy provides high school students
connections to higher learning and the world
of work while forming and managing their own
student companies. All programs are held at
campus sites at area colleges and universities.
JA More Than Money™ teaches students in
grades 3, 4 and 5 about earning, spending,
sharing, and saving money, and businesses they
can start or jobs they can perform to earn money.
