Whilst these rankings capture academic performance and peer commendation, they don’t actually enable institutions to evaluate the reach or strength of their reputation amongst wider publics and on an international basis. Aurora therefore is a tool designed to map international media articles both quantitatively and qualitatively to allow members of the World 100 Reputation Network to see the extent to which their reputation is amplified in the international media. Aurora was originally run for six months in 2009/10 followed by a full 12 months in 2010/11. With continuing support from our members, we are running Aurora for its fifth year, and hopefully making it even more useful. Over the past five years it has been interesting to follow long-term stories featuring the institutions that participate in Aurora. For example, continuing research and discoveries around graphene have kept Manchester firmly in the media spotlight, while Nottingham often comments on Chinese politics and seems to be a leader in international expansion. Aurora allows us to observe and comment as universities build these niche areas of specialisation, and we look forward to following their development over the next 12 months. As we move towards REF 2014 in the UK, the reporting will continue to focus on research stories. Although it is clear that measuring “impact” will be much more important in the UK over the next few years, it also has global importance; we have demonstrated in the previous studies that the proportion of research stories is often very high for non-English speaking universities. We will focus on how much impact is received through media articles, what types of research are most impactful, and ways in which institutions can try to increase their impact through research. In 2013/14, we have seven institutions participating in Aurora: Manchester, Helsinki, Nottingham, Queen Mary, LSE, Lancaster and Melbourne. We are also extending the tool to the Research Members of the W100 Network by providing a brief overview of the international media coverage of the World 100 universities, based on the quantitative analysis provided in the Aurora report. How it works The full Aurora report contains two sections. The first is a quantitative assessment of the total number of international media mentions during the assessment period (the first full week of each month). This is carried out for all 150+ institutions who are ranked in the top 100 by the SJT, THE or QS world rankings and helps to set the monthly context for overall media volume. The second aspect is a qualitative study carried out for the participating World 100 members that provides an in-depth comment on the media impact each month by analysing and comparing across the World 100 sample. Analysis scores individual articles for their reputational impact and our reporting picks up interesting stories and trends, looking in detail at what constitutes a “high impact” story for that month. Also provided is an individualised summary of your institution’s media mentions, as well as individual article reports in which © 2014 The Knowledge Partnership 2 AURORA: Aggregated University Online Reputational Assessor each mention is presented in detail, with every variable that it was scored by. This section gives the most in-depth explanation as to why a media story generated a high or a low score and is useful for making comparisons between stories. Owing to its depth and analysis, Aurora continues to break new ground in the field of assessing the impact of media communications. As the methodology is highly complex and each article is being scored by two totally independent scrutinisers, slight refinements to the methodology may be made each month. This is to improve the rigidity of findings, to reduce the subjective elements as much as possible, and to make the results as useful as possible. We will notify members in the report introduction if any changes are made. We currently have a stable methodology, however, which we believe is providing reliable results to our members. Therefore, we have decided not to make any methodological changes for the start of the 2013/14 period. We would welcome any comments or suggestions you may have about the methodology or reporting. © 2014 The Knowledge Partnership 3 AURORA: Aggregated University Online Reputational Assessor Quantitative Analysis Volume of Coverage for World 100 Universities The volume of media mentions was measured for all 150+ institutions who qualify as a “World 100” university. Owing to the number of institutions, only the first 40 have been shown in the chart below. Different colours highlight an institution’s country. Figure 1: Volume of international media coverage for World 100 ranked universities © 2014 The Knowledge Partnership 4 AURORA: Aggregated University Online Reputational Assessor Overall Coverage Oxford, Cambridge and LSE top the chart this month, with Oxford leading by a wide margin – 288 stories, compared with 161 from Cambridge and 116 from LSE. Overall, there are 15 US universites and 15 UK universities in the Top 40 by media volume with four Australian universities, three Canadian universities, two from Asia, one from Scandinavia (Copenhagen) and one from Israel (Hebrew University in Jerusalem). There are five Aurora Subscribers in the Top 40 – LSE (3rd position with 116 stories), Manchester (8th position with 73 stories), Nottingham (18th position with 48 stories), Melbourne (20th position with 43 stories) and Queen Mary (35th position with 30 stories). Lancaster has 15 stories this month and appears in 70th position whilst Helskinki is in 133rd place this month with just five stories. Aurora Research Members with significant volumes of coverage include UCL (7th place, 76 stories), Edinburgh (22nd place, 42 stories), Tokyo (25th place, 39 stories) and Copenhagen (31st place, 30 stories). UK and North American universities The upper reaches of the chart are dominated by UK and North American universities this month. Harvard, Stanford and New York are the US institutions with the highest volume of coverage. Harvard placed 113 stories and occupies the 4th position, behind LSE. Stanford is in 6th place with 76 stories and New York is in 9th place with 67. Russell Group institutions again form the majority of UK universities receiving a high volume of coverage, led by Oxford and Cambridge. Sheffield achieved the highest volume of coverage of the Yorkshire universities, in 12th place with 62 stories. Leeds is in 26th place with 38 stories. Edinburgh achieved the highest volume of coverage for the Scottish universities and appears in 22nd place with 42 stories. Glasgow is in 28th place with 36 stories. Australian universities Sydney, Queensland and Melbourne are in the Top 20 institutions for volume of coverage this month with Australian National University (ANU) in 21st position with 42 stories. Sydney is in 16th place with 60 stories, Queensland is in 19th position with 44 and Melbourne is in 20th place with 43. Canadian Universities There are significant volumes for two Canadian institutions this month – Toronto in fifth place with 112 stories and the University of British Columbia (UBC) is in 16th place with 60 stories. Oriental Universities Tokyo had the highest volume of coverage among Oriental universities. The W100 Research Member came in 25th place with 39 stories. Hong Kong was in 40th position with 23 stories. © 2014 The Knowledge Partnership 5 AURORA: Aggregated University Online Reputational Assessor Volume of Coverage for Participating World 100 Network Members The graphs below look at the volume of coverage for the members of the World 100 Reputation Network who are participating in Aurora – either as a Research Member or as an Aurora Subscriber. Of these 107 resulted in a positive impact score, while 1 returned a negative score. The overall reputation score gained by LSE was 49,264 and the average score for one article was 456, compared with 423 across the sample. The highest impact score LSE received was 18,620 for the story “Election focus on London's housing future” featured in BBC News. An LSE lecturer living in the borough of Hammersmith and Fulham was interviewed alongside a local reporter in a BBC radio piece about the reduction in council tax charges made by the Conservative-led council in a bid to attract voters. See: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-27430934 The highest score across the sample for a single article was 47,025, and was received by Manchester for the story “Manchester University brings its skills to finding state school governors” featured in The Guardian. See: http://www.theguardian.com/sustainable-business/sustainability-case-studiesmanchester-university -school-governors The story is examined in this month’s Article Focus. The lowest impact score LSE received was -3,088 for the story “Sheffield University rated best place to be a student? You'd better believe it” featured in The Guardian. The lowest score across the sample was -23,750, and was received by Melbourne for the story “Sophie Mirabella penned in by protesters at University of Melbourne” featured in The Guardian. Nottingham and Melbourne had a similar volume of coverage – 42 and 41 stories respectively. Manchester had 32 stories and Queen Mary had 26. Lancaster and Helsinki had the fewest stories with 15 and 5 respectively. © 2014 The Knowledge Partnership 8 AURORA: Aggregated University Online Reputational Assessor Figure 4: Participating members’ media volume and total impact score 120 70,000 60,000 100 40,000 80 30,000 60 20,000 10,000 40 0 Overall reputational impact score Number of articles in period 50,000 -10,000 20 -20,000 0 -30,000 The reputational impact score received by the Aurora Subscribers in relation to the volume of coverage received during May 2014 varied somewhat. Manchester achieved a total reputational impact score of 60,509 from its 32 stories and Queen Mary was close behind with 59,575 reputational impact points from its 26 articles. LSE’s reputational impact score was 49,264 from 108 stories whilst Nottingham placed 42 stories with an overall reputational impact score of 9,328. Although it placed only 15 stories, Lancaster’s reputational impact score was high in relation to the volume of coverage with 7,226 points. Helsinki also received a relatively high score from a small number of articles – 317 points from 5 articles. Melbourne suffered from negative coverage in high profile media this month, which lowers its overall impact and average article scores – although it did achieve some very positive publicity in both specialist and popular media. Melbourne’s overall impact score was -18,516, largely due to videos of a scuffle between student protestors, security staff and a visiting speaker which appeared in high profile media worldwide. © 2014 The Knowledge Partnership 9 AURORA: Aggregated University Online Reputational Assessor Table 2: Aurora participants ranked by total impact score University Number of Stories Total Impact Score 32 26 108 42 15 5 41 60,509 59,575 49,264 9,328 7,226 317 -18,516 Manchester Queen Mary LSE Nottingham Lancaster Helsinki Melbourne © 2014 The Knowledge Partnership Average Impact Score 1,891 2,291 456 222 482 63 -452 10 AURORA: Aggregated University Online Reputational Assessor Group Analysis – Average Impact (Article Quality) The graph below plots the number of media mentions against each institution’s average impact score. This was largely due to BBC news coverage of asthma research and high-scoring medical and research stories in high-profile media. Manchester had an average impact score of 1,891 against an overall average of 423 points per article across the Aurora participants. Lancaster achieved an average impact score of 482 and Nottingham 222. Helsinki’s average score per article was 63. Two high profile instances of negative coverage drove Melbourne’s average score per article down to -452. © 2014 The Knowledge Partnership 11 AURORA: Aggregated University Online Reputational Assessor Table 3: Aurora participants ranked by average impact score University Queen Mary Manchester Lancaster LSE Nottingham Helsinki Melbourne Number of Stories Total Impact Score 26 32 15 108 42 5 41 59,575 60,509 7,226 49,264 9,328 317 -18,516 © 2014 The Knowledge Partnership Overall Average Article Impact 423 423 423 423 423 423 423 Average Impact Score 2,291 1,891 482 456 222 63 -452 12 AURORA: Aggregated University Online Reputational Assessor Group Analysis – Monthly Comparison The following graph shows the total volume of media mentions and the total impact score for this month, in comparison to the previous month. Queen Mary achieved a consistently high reputational score both months – 65,488 in April and 59,575 in May. Manchester’s reputational score increased considerably from 30,959 in April to 60,509 in May. Nottingham’s reputational impact score dropped from 58,321 in April to 9,328 in May – largely due to the lack of BBC and other high-profile coverage this month. LSE’s reputational impact score increased from 29,335 to 49,264 but Lancaster’s score remained relatively stable – 8,036 in April compared with 7,226 in May. Helsinki’s score has also decreased due to a lack of exposure in high-profile media. © 2014 The Knowledge Partnership 13 AURORA: Aggregated University Online Reputational Assessor Group Analysis – Research Focus The graph below shows the proportion of the articles that were classified as ‘Research Stories’ and the amount of impact that they created for each institution. 20 50,000 18 45,000 16 40,000 14 35,000 12 30,000 10 25,000 8 20,000 6 15,000 4 10,000 2 5,000 0 0 Overall reputational impact score from research stories Number of research articles in period Figure 7: Participating members’ volume and impact from research stories Queen Mary had the highest volume of stories in the research category this month. Some 77% of the University’s stories were classified as research-related and accounted for 78% of its overall reputational impact score. Melbourne also placed a significant proportion of research-related articles – some 20 articles or 49% of its total stories. Although the impact of these on its reputational score was undermined by negative coverage in the non-research category they represent a significant body of coverage and it will be interesting to draw comparisons during months when there are no high-impact negative stories to skew the results. Manchester also placed significant research stories – some 44% of its total coverage. However they accounted for just 4% of its reputational impact score – mainly because they appeared in specialist or low-profile media. The same applies to Lancaster which had 33% of its stories in the research category accounting for just 3% of its overall reputational impact score. Helsinki, on the other hand, derived 38% of its reputational impact score from research related stories which accounted for 40% of the University’s coverage. © 2014 The Knowledge Partnership 14 AURORA: Aggregated University Online Reputational Assessor Some 13% of Nottingham’s overall reputational impact score came from the 12 research related stories that made up 29% of its total coverage. The bulk of LSE’s coverage each month comes from informed comment on world-affairs and economics, alumni stories, articles written by staff or people previously connected with the University and from name-checks and references to its world-class status. Research-related stories account for a relatively small proportion of its monthly coverage despite its global reputation. This month is no exception as just 10% of its volume of coverage was classified as research-related, contributing 5% of its overall-reputational impact score. The effects are generally short-lived and the monthly Aurora reports show that most negative stories tend not to haunt or dog the institutions unfortunate enough to be on the receiving end. There are exceptions – mud sticks – and there will occasionally be longer term references to negative aspects associated with particular institutions. It is inevitable that universities, as places which deal in discussion, analysis and debate, will occasionally attract attention – either through association with ideologies that some commentators disagree with, or in connection with visiting speakers and incidents involving staff or students. This month Manchester, Nottingham, LSE and Melbourne all received negative publicity for one reason or another. The Group Analysis section this month considers the potential impact in each case. LSE is an example of an institution which is sometimes ‘shot from both sides’. In some rightwing American publications it can sometimes be portrayed as a hot-bed of Marxist or socialist thought or even a haven for radical Islamists. Conversely, LSE has sometimes attracted negative comments from writers who see it as a supporter of the capitalist system because of the focus on business, management and economics. Generally, these comments are not significant enough to result in a negative score and in many instances are offset by more positive comments elsewhere in the articles in which they appear. As a high-profile, world-class institution it is inevitable that LSE will attract both positive and negative attention. Sheffield University – a W100 Research Member – has received significant positive publicity for its top-rating for student satisfaction in the THE Student Satisfaction Survey; a comment piece in The Guardian is particularly effusive about the positive aspects of the University and the city itself. See: http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/may/15/sheffield-university-numberone-student-experience-times-higher-education-survey Inevitably, with articles of this kind, some attention is given to those institutions which have not performed as well in certain aspects. LSE had a relatively low score for student satisfaction in this year’s survey, despite its high academic reputation and the writer, Laura Kay, speculates whether this might be due to a lack of ‘community spirit’ in the capital. I cannot speak for the students of universities such as the London School of Economics, which scored comparatively low on student experience, despite having a great deal of academic prestige. But perhaps it is a lack of a community feel which adds to this: the feeling of living in an anonymous city and not really belonging to something, as well as other more tangible reasons such as expensive housing and living costs. Laura Kay, The Guardian 15 May 2014 The negative score in this instance is offset by positive comments about the academic prestige of the institution itself. The comment itself is unlikely to cause reputational damage, © 2014 The Knowledge Partnership 19 AURORA: Aggregated University Online Reputational Assessor but clearly the onus is on the student support systems at LSE to investigate the causes of the comparatively low satisfaction score. Manchester received some negative publicity in the THE over the apparent lack of support from ‘mainstream’ academics at the University for an ‘alternative’ curriculum prepared by a lecturer apparently in response to students’ demands. Lecturer Sakir Yilmaz has not had his contract renewed and has criticised the ‘stubbornness’ of some of his colleagues for rejecting a module covering alternative approaches to the economic crisis. A student group, The Post Crash Economics Society called for an alternative approach to the teaching of economics in an initiative widely hailed in The Guardian and reported in broadsheet and specialist media. A petition calling for the renewal of the lecturer’s contract has been submitted to the University and an unofficial ‘out of hours’ version of the module has allegedly attracted around 50 students. The article quotes the University’s reasons for not accepting the module and its plans to deliver new modules by a ‘renowned’ economist and two new politics modules from September. So far, the story appears only to have featured in the specialist THE supplement but given previous interest in The Post Crash Economics Society in The Guardian, it is likely to be picked up by that paper and other media outlets in future. Nottingham received potentially damaging publicity in The Daily Telegraph this month with a highly emotive article about ‘value for money’ in the wake of the increased tuition fees. This is a topic which is likely to recur and affect many universities in future. The paper ran a strident headline, “Student criticises ‘appalling’ lack of teaching time at university”. A subheading continues, ‘A student hit out at the substandard teaching and short term times at Nottingham University which charges £9,000 per year for undergraduate courses’. The emotiveness of the piece is heightened by the absence of quotation marks around ‘substandard’, implying that this is not solely an accusation brought by the student but the opinion of the newspaper itself. A caption to the photograph of the student who brought the complaint reinforces the negative tone, ‘Talia Samuelson, who is studying at Nottingham University, complained over paying £9,000 per year for just four-and-a-half months of “semiintelligible” lectures and tutorials’. The complaints, made in a letter to The Times, are repeated in the body of the article which claims that the student was receiving just four-and-a-half hours of lectures a week on her Art History course from ill-prepared and ‘inarticulate academics.’ The University defended itself with citations of its league-table performance, global standing and Top 10 performance in the THE Student Experience Survey which had just been published that week. Whilst the University’s response is robust, with quotations from the head of department and the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and a commitment to investigate the student’s concerns, the overall tone is highly critical leading to a negative score of -3,960. © 2014 The Knowledge Partnership 20 AURORA: Aggregated University Online Reputational Assessor See: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/education/universityeducation/10831088/Student-criticisesappalling-lack-of-teaching-time-at-university.html Although this score – and Manchester’s negative score of -3,088 – is lower than the negative score that Melbourne received for news of a scuffle on campus, both the Manchester and Nottingham stories have the potential to cause some longer term reputational damage. Melbourne is unfortunate to have received high-profile negative publicity during its debut month as an Aurora Subscriber. However, despite the dramatic video footage of an unseemly scuffle on campus, the longer term effects are likely to be negligible. Campus sit-ins and protests are often regarded as a thing of the past, but they do recur from time to time. In this instance, scuffles on campus were captured on CCTV and the footage shown on the websites of The Daily Mail (which has recently launched an Australian edition) and The Guardian in the UK. Controversial former Australian Liberal MP, Sophie Mirabella was forced to temporarily abandon a lecture on campus when a ‘mob’ of about 20 students disrupted the event chanting, ‘Say it loud, say it clear, racists are not welcome here.’ The lecture continued after the protestors were removed by security staff. The incident was a comparatively minor one yet received negative scores of -180 in the Daily Mail and -23,750 in The Guardian, largely because of the paper’s high-profile. The tone of the articles is rather emotive, The Guardian headline and subheadings describe the controversial former MP as being ‘penned in’ and ‘struggling to escape’ a ‘mob’ of protestors – descriptions that are arguably rather more dramatic than the footage itself. Daily Mail: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2632366/Former-Liberal-MP-SophieMirabella-mobbed-student-protesters-Melbourne.html The Guardian: http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/may/19/sophie-mirabella-penned-inby-protesters-at-university-of-melbourne It is unfortunate that Melbourne received negative scores from these articles but one-off incidents of this kind rarely affect institutional reputation in the longer term. Where negative stories concern provision, teaching and learning and decisions around the curriculum the negative effects are likely to be cumulative and require monitoring and remedial action by the universities involved. In the instances cited this month, both Manchester and Nottingham have responded with measured and balanced comment highlighting positive aspects – such as the development of new modules in the case of Manchester and global reputation and a commitment to investigate complaints in the case of Nottingham. Negative publicity cannot be entirely avoided but in these instances there are clear signs of reputational management and response. © 2014 The Knowledge Partnership 21 AURORA: Aggregated University Online Reputational Assessor Group Analysis – Article Focus In this section, we will look at two important stories from this period side by side. UNIVERSITY Story 1 – Snails homing instinct can be overcome, if you move them 20m away http://www.theguardian.com/environment/ 2014/may/16/snails-homing-instinctovercome-move-20-metres-away UNIVERSITY Story 2 – http://www.theguardian.com/sustainablebusiness/sustainability-case-studiesmanchester-university-school-governors Editorial Prominence Due to: Link to website Written by special correspondent More than 500 words Editorial Prominence 165 Due to: University name in bold 50 University described as world-class 10 Link to website 10 Mentions ranking 10 Institutional Amplification Tone Reach 95 10 20 40 Strong Positive The Guardian 95 Overall Reputational Impact 13,538 Institutional Amplification Tone Reach Full Overwhelmingly Endorsing The Guardian 95 Overall Reputational Impact 47,025 This month’s Article Focus considers two very different stories – one looking at an aspect of research of general interest and public relevance – at least to gardeners – and the other covering an aspect of university work which is having an impact on the wider community. The Queen Mary article concerns research that shows that the ‘homing instincts’ of common garden snails diminishes if they are moved more than 20 metres from their original location. The habit of throwing them into neighbouring gardens does not avail if the molluscs are thrown less than 20m away. The story was covered in a range of media, including Nature World News, The Independent and The Daily Mail. The Guardian’s coverage gained Queen Mary the highest reputational impact points due to the paper’s ‘reach’. All the articles picked up on the memorable aspect of throwing the snails into neighbouring gardens – a good example of a ‘hook’ or image added to a research story in order to make it accessible to a wider audience. Coverage is light-hearted but not flippant and The Guardian piece combines colloquial and quirky observations with an examination of the science involved. It ends with the observation that ‘few snails were hurt in the course of this research’ – as the scientists from Queen Mary and Exeter Universities reported that most had a ‘soft landing’ in undergrowth. The Guardian article and similar pieces in The Independent and Daily Mail is a good example of serious research presented in a light-hearted and accessible way but without damage to the scientific integrity of the research itself. © 2014 The Knowledge Partnership 22 AURORA: Aggregated University Online Reputational Assessor There are links to the Queen Mary website and to the scientific journal in which the findings of the joint Queen Mary/Exeter research was published. The Manchester story was the highest scoring in this month’s Aurora Comparison and concerns the University’s involvement in an initiative to attract professionals into the role of state school governors. The piece appears as a ‘Sustainability Case-study’ on The Guardian Professional website, as part of a series on ‘corporate sustainability’. The initiative to recruit professionals to roles as state school governors is led by Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell, the University’s President and Vice-Chancellor and a ‘distinguished life scientist’. In 2013 the University was the first to sign-up to an initiative with SGOSS, a charity which promotes the role of state school governors and which seeks to attract professionals to volunteer for these roles. Initially, the University promoted the volunteering opportunities among its own staff and now it is involved in a wider initiative with its alumni and other contacts. The aim is to deploy well-qualified volunteers with academic, estate management, finance, law, human resources and student welfare expertise. Progress has been impressive, with the University hitting its five-year target within the first year. The growth has been the largest from any single-site employer in the UK and also the highest among campus-based educational institutions. The use of impressive statistics and highlighting the University’s achievements with support from its highest levels leads to a ‘Very Positive: Overwhelmingly Endorsing’ ranking in the ‘Tone’ category and contributes to the high score of 47,025. © 2014 The Knowledge Partnership 23 Summary of Article Impact Scores Article Relevant ID University 16 LSE 17 LSE 18 LSE 19 LSE 21 LSE 22 LSE 23 LSE 24 LSE 25 LSE 26 LSE 27 LSE 28 LSE 29 LSE 31 LSE 32 LSE 33 LSE Source Name of Article The Corruption of Human Rights Watch Elections 2014: NRIs in the UK celebrate Narenda Modi's victory LSE ranked as top university in London Improving the recruitment of community health workers in Zambia Canada needs balance in war on crime Privacy Group Accuses UK Spy Agency of Hacking Millions of Computers Worldwide Madison's Drew University commencement speech to be farewell by President Bull Philadelphia Tribune picks Wolf for Philadelphia Tribune governor The Malaysian DAP's Dyana Sofya to take on Gerakan Insider President in Teluk-Intan by-election Rutgers University - Newark will honor a visionary entrepreneur at May 21 commencement ceremony The Upside of Being a Night Owl Only Lance Armstrong has thrown more people under the bus My view: Monica at the end of her 'humiliation derby' A Drug-Free World?
