Anyone over the age of 16 is entitled to use the library free of charge, people under the age of 18
need their parents’ approval. Home loan is only possible for patrons whose domicile is
Switzerland. For further details please consult the brochure Benutzungsbestimmungen which is
available at the issue and reference desks. To use the library, you need a library card from a library
affiliated to the IDS Information Network. The Zentralbibliothek Zürich will issue a library card
after you show official identification. Please register first, using the respective online form on our
website (www.zb.uzh.ch). The registration is valid for the NEBIS Network and all libraries
affiliated to the IDS Information Network.
All publications, unless otherwise stipulated by borrowing restrictions, may be taken home. The
loan period lasts for four weeks and is automatically – without notification – extended by eight
further weeks. During the extension of the loan period documents can be recalled at any time if
requested by other users. The loan period can be extended manually (online), after automatic
extensions, up to three more times. All books and periodicals displayed in the reading room areas
are for reference only. Publications over one hundred years old may only be consulted in the
library.
All stock with the classification letters
(except GG, but GGN included)
(except FF, but FFN included)
is located in the open access area (levels 02, 03 and 04). These books are fetched by the users
themselves and presented either at the issue desk for open stacks books or at the reading room
desk.
On demand, documents may be delivered directly to the home address for a fee (CHF 10.- per
volume) or sent by courier to one of the affiliated IDS libraries (q.v. section Purchasing Documents From Other Libraries). Journal articles from print documents of the Zentralbibliothek
Zürich may be ordered on-line as hard copies or pdf-files (CHF 10.- per 20 pages).
The On-line Network Catalogue IDS Zürich Zentralbibliothek / NEBIS lists all publications held by
the ZB since 1988. It offers various access options and can also be accessed externally by Internet:
www.zb.uzh.ch.
The Central Alphabetical Catalogue for Zurich libraries (card catalogue with yellow labels) and
the Subject Catalogue (card catalogue with green labels) list the ZB's holdings up to and including
publication year 1989. These two catalogues exist in a digitized version and can also be accessed
by Internet.
If you wish to borrow a ZB book listed in the card catalogues and not located in the open access
area, please order by computer using the On-line Network Catalogue: our staff will gladly assist you.
Bibliographical and specialist inquiries should be made to the reference desk in the catalogue
room. For information on specific subject areas please consult our subject specialists.
Self-service photocopiers are available on all floors of the public access area. To use these photocopiers you will need a copy-card which can be purchased for CHF 10.- or 20.- at the reference
desks in the reading or catalogue room, as well as at the issue and return desks. Microform machines
for reading and reproducing documents are situated in the reading room (P 2). Photographs, slides,
microfilms, scans etc. can be produced in-house: order forms are available at the reading room desk.
