Wondering what to do
with expired or unused
prescription medications?
Due to legal restrictions,
the Household Hazardous
Waste Collection Facility in
Martinez does not accept prescription medications.
Please use the following disposal methods
for unwanted medicine:
1. Beginning June 1, you can dispose of your
medications in a bin labeled “Pharmaceutical
Disposal Only” at the new Concord drop-off
location at the Concord Police Department, 1350
Galindo Street in Concord. (Do not dispose of
syringes or needles with medication.)
2. To dispose of unwanted medications, pour pills
into a quart-size sealable plastic bag (recycle
the empty containers as appropriate); liquids
should be left in their bottles, but still put into a
sealed plastic bag to prevent leakage.
3. Check with your pharmacy to see if it offers a
take-back program for your non-controlled
(non-narcotic) prescription drugs.

Spring 2010
Concord is a beautiful place... together we can keep it that way.
City of Concord Profile
Meet City Planner
Phillip Woods
Phillip Woods, the City of Concord’s new
Solid Waste & Recycling Manager, is not
new to planning. He earned his degree
in Architecture from the University of
Cincinnati, served both the cities of
Oakland and Palo Alto as a city planner,
before coming to Concord nine years
ago. Woods is responsible for the efficient
operation of Concord’s garbage and
recycling collection programs, in addition
to monitoring the City’s compliance with
AB 939 state recycling mandates. Under
Woods’ leadership, the City of Concord
will be instituting several new recycling
programs: A new pharmaceutical drop-off
program; a new curbside battery recycling
program; and a new program for disposal
of sharps. “Being at the forefront of new

programs to increase recycling is exciting,”
Woods said. Woods says that occasionally
he receives questions from residents
about Concord’s garbage and recycling
collection programs. “Most residents I talk
with are happy with their service,” Woods
commented. “Concord is the largest city
in Contra Costa County and for garbage
service to run smoothly, that’s impressive.”
In addition to managing the City’s solid
waste and recycling programs, Woods is
working on amending Concord’s General
Plan, to include plans for developing the
new Concord Naval Weapons Station
property. He also is responsible for
updating the City’s Housing element, which
requires Concord to plan ahead for its
future residential housing needs.
Ask the
Recycling Guy
Q: Why do I have to remove lids from containers and bottles?
A: It is important to REMOVE lids from all
containers before placing them in your
recycling toter. This will ensure that all
of the liquid has been removed and the
containers are dry. Clean, dry containers
greatly reduce contamination of the
cardboard and other paper products in
the recycling toter.
Q: What do I do with container lids once
I remove them from the containers?
A: Please recycle the lids in your BLUE
recycling toter.

FREE Summer Education Program
Concord Disposal Service offers a FREE Summer Education Program. Our exciting
educational program will teach students about the importance of recycling and
will encourage students on ways to protect the environment. We introduce simple,
effective ways to help maintain our planet’s beauty for generations to come, while
allowing students to reflect and
engage with ideas of their own.
With our grade-appropriate lesson
plans that satisfy California
education standards, students gain
knowledge in a 30-to 50-minute
interactive lesson. In addition to
our Summer Education Program,
we also offer tours of Mt. Diablo
Recycling, one of California’s
largest, state-of-the-art recycling
facilities, located in Pittsburg.
We are dedicated to educating young people on the value of keeping our community
clean, green, and beautiful for years to come. For more information about our free
summer education program or to schedule a tour of Mt. Diablo Recycling, please

Residential Bills Sent
to Customers on the
15th of Every Month
Concord customers now receive a monthly bill on the 15th of every month. Payment
for service is due upon receipt of the Concord Disposal Service invoice. Customers
who have not paid by the 15th of the month following the billing month will have
their service stopped. For example, if a customer does not pay for May and June
service, their accounts will be stopped on July 15th for lack of payment. Customers
will receive a reminder statement stating that service has been stopped. Concord
Disposal will pull all 3 toters 15 days after the stop date. Customers must pay the
entire balance to resume service, including the month the toters were scheduled
to be removed. For example, a customer that was billed in May, and was stopped
on July 15th, must pay for May, June and July to resume service. Also, accounts
resumed after toters are pulled will receive a RECONNECT fee of $20 per toter
pulled. Accounts resumed prior to toters being pulled will not receive a reconnect
fee. Thank you for your cooperation.
