How to Win Resume & Ace Interview (25/Apr/14) Feedback & thoughts from Jia Ge Dear my students, Thank you for your comments. I am very happy to see you have some additional thoughts about my interview and resume concepts after our class. As I said before, there is NO shortcut when it comes to resume and interview preparations! To Leslley, everyone has the “suffering frustrations” before getting the first accounting related job. How do you define “enough” failures? 10? 100? 500? 1000? “I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.” Thomas Edison once said. When I graduated, I was just an international student who finished the bachelor degree and got the PR in Sydney. Today you think my titles and experience are “too impressive”. It is because that people only get noticed once they have some proven results to our society. But have you seen the time when I was struggling to write my winning resume in front of my computer? Have you seen the time when I was completing my CA assignments at 3am after my wife and kids went to bed? Success only comes with our own determinations! That it! Everything else is just another excuse for failures. To Alex, Yes, you need to write down the answers. Read them, change them and improve them. Finally make sure you can act on them! And remember you need 3 stories to cover the 10 points as much as you can. We only have 6 hours in class, so the best way to do role play is to find a reliable friend. Another way I used before is to make your own interview videos in front of a camera and replay them again and again, then repeat this process until you think the videos could be uploaded to YouTube without embarrassing yourself on the Internet! To Yu, there are countless ways to teach the resume and interview skills. But I choose to share my own personal experience with you. So I can tell my students: “Yes, we can!” You just need to know how and then DO it! Practise, practise and practise until you can “fake” it. This is not magic. This is hard work! Finally best wishes and good luck for all of you. During this course, I have learned a lot of details about how to present the best part of myself during the interview process and even how to interest the interviewer from my resume. As a graduate, I have no any work experience and have no idea what would an interview looks like. Lacking of information makes me feel less confidence and fear to find jobs. After last Friday's course, I have learned lots of skills like how to make us match the company's requirement perfectly, how to control the progress of interview. This course not only teach us how to present us perfectly, but also help us to find out what are the major weakness of us to compete with others. I noticed that the only way to be confident is do preparing well. The more homework we did before the interview, the more control power we hold during the interview. Also thank you for sharing your own experience with us. That was very kindness. Thanks for your helping. Regards. YT Hi Jia, I'm very impressed with your class. Not only did you have good structural content in consistency, you have strong human sense. Your speech inspired me not to give up on my career path. I've found that I was not completely to prepare for the interviews by drawing lessons from past so that I was nervous and stuck in behaviour questions. Indeed, there are many stuffs to be done before I walk into the any type of interview, and different types of interview has different strategy such as phone interview and video interview. Is it necessary or useful to write my story down based on the models so that I could answer the questions smoothly? Here I would look forward an advice that you could provide real practice or simulation exercises on role-play for us in order to improve response skills. Dollars R US Pty. Ltd. I would really appreciate you if you could modify it and consider me 1 hour one to one free career coaching at your convenience. Best regards, AM Hi Jia, I really enjoy today’s lecture about the soft skills of resume and interview preparation. Your personal experience and research inspired me a lot about how to prepare my job seeking and interview. For example, preparing three stories to cover the behaviour questions and get more information from different resources to start a topic during the interview. I believe they are very useful skills. However, your titles and experience are “too impressive” to me (e.g. CA, ACCA, CPA etc.). As a beginner, your achievements look kind of far too different with me and we have totally different starting point (e.g. Optus graduate program). After suffering enough frustrations in the job hunting, I really need a mentor with similar and related experience with me. I love the last story you told us about how you “come back” to work for PWC after years. You proved that apart from knowledge and skills, desire to succeed is important too. I always believe afraid of failure is a really bad excuse for not even trying. This is the major reason why am I in this program right now and meeting you is my pleasure. Thank you.
