ALMAGUIN NEWS, Thursday, February 12, 2009 – Page 11 THIS SPACE FOR SALE! Professional service Priced right coverage Call the News at 382-9996 Burk’s Falls 382-2902 Sundridge 384-5361 How to wrestle a cow with one horn BOWLING Standings And other slushy ice fishing perils Fish Tales by Bill Eden This last bit of warm weather has certainly made a mess of our lakes around here. The slush has come up under the snow and things have got a bit sloppy. One guy was telling me how he cut open the hole in his hut only to have a gusher of water boil up and flood the ice all around him. The water came up almost to the floorboards, so now the hut must be blocked up out of the water. Now he wishes that he had jacked up the hut and blocked up the runners before he cut the hole. The water is now up to his boot-tops. But he is only one of the many unhappy campers out on the lakes right now. If you own a sled and intend to take it fishing on one of the many back lakes in our area, it might be good to walk out first and see how much water is under the snow. It only takes minutes to get a sled bogged down in the slush, but it takes hours to get one back to the shoreline. I once hit a slush pocket so deep that the sled stopped so fast, that I nearly went over the handlebars. When I put my foot down to get off, the slush went over my boot-tops before I found bottom. There was a time when I wondered if there was a bottom. I was afraid that everything was about to go through the ice at any moment. Then my foot found the solid ice under my boot. Now the fun started. First the sled had to be started and tipped over on its side. This way you can spin the track and clear out a lot of the slush stuck in the track. It might make the sled a hundred pounds lighter and easier to move. Problem was, when I grabbed the handlebars and tried to pry the sled over, I snapped off said handlebars on the right side. Now it was like wrestling a cow with only one horn. It was high noon when this happened and it was last light when I got back to the truck. That day my best friend was my snowshoes. With them I made a trail ahead and a pad to sit the sled on. Turned out that the swamp that I fell in was only four or five sled-lengths long. Since it was still cold enough to freeze, by mixing the top layers of dry snow with the slush, it finally firmed up enough to get up on. The next problem was steering the sled with one hand and holding the throttle in my lap. Made for a very interesting trip, but not one I would like to do again. The good news is that all this water will eventually freeze up again in a few days. Then all this water will be several inches of ice. The snow will be gone off the lakes and we will be able to take the bikes and trucks back out on the lakes and go fishing again. I can hardly wait. GP W L PF Pts. The midget rep team had the weekend off as they await their next round versus Beaverton. House league continues with regular season play while midget, AE bantam and atom teams await information with regards to the Muskoka-Parry Sound playdown schedule. Tyke: No stats available. Novice: The novice team played in the Valley East Tournament on Feb. 6 to 8. This was the first time for many of the kids to play in a tournament. The first game was on Friday night against Sudbury. There were lots of butterflies with this young team as Sudbury scored on their first shot. The Ice Devils came back to make it a very exciting game. The score ended 4 - 3 for Sudbury. The defensive MVP went to Cole Galekovic and offensive MVP to Nicholas Coleman. On Saturday morning they were back at it playing a team from Elliot Lake. Cody Smith put Almaguin on the board within the first 2 minutes with an unassisted goal. By the end of the second Almaguin was in the lead 3 - 0. Goals came from Aidan Flynn and Lucas West. West also got an assist on Flynn’s goal and Nicholas Coleman assisted West. Elliot Lake tried very hard to tie the game in the third and came close. Owen Johnstone with spectacular saves kept the team in the game which earned him the defensive MVP. The offensive MVP went to Aidan Flynn. The team had a long time off before their final game at the end of the day against Haileybury. Once again the Ice Devils were up 3 - 1 going into the third and couldn’t hold on for the win. This was a very exciting game which, they ended up on the losing end of a 4 - 3 score. Offensive MVP was awarded to Dustin Moore with the defensive MVP going to Cody Smith. Atom: No stats available. Peewee: The South River arena was packed and excitement filled the air as the Almaguin Ice Devils peewee squad hit the ice on Sunday, Feb. 8. This quarter-final series was a rematch of last season’s playdowns, with the Almaguin team facing off once again with Omeemee for the chance to move on to the OMHA semifinals. The home team used their nervous energy and came out and held their own against their very evenly matched opponents in the first period. With some exciting end-toend rushes and some big defensive plays, the Almaguin squad found themselves down 1-0 at the end of the first. In the second period, after a few failed clearing attempts and a few small collapses, the Ice Devils went into the dressing room down 6-0; however, the team rallied and realized that this is going to be a long series and wanted to send a message to the Omeemee team that it is far from over. Almaguin came out and dominated most of the play in the third but could only muster one goal despite consistent pressure throughout the period. Ralphie Burton stuffed one home from Dryden Sollman and Tyler Young midway through the final frame. The Almaguin squad realized that although this is going to be a tough series they are capable of winning it with discipline and hard work. The team looks forward to Game 2 in Omeemee next Saturday and Game 3 back in Sundridge at 3:45 p.m. next Sunday, Feb.15. Come out and cheer on the team and enjoy some exciting hockey action. Bantam: No stats available. Midget: The midgets defeated Flesherton in the preliminary round and now move on to the quarter-finals, facing off against their old rivals Beaverton. Game 1 begins at home in Sundridge at 4:10 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 14. Game 2 is in Beaverton on Sunday, Feb. 15, and then the action switches back home, this time at the South River arena on Monday, Feb. 16 at 2:15 p.m. Last year’s matchup with these two teams was a hard-fought battle played with intensity and with some adversity, leaving Almaguin just shy of a victory to move on. This year the team wants to make sure that they come out strong and hard and shut the opposition down to move on. Come on out to the rink and make some noise for the boys as they begin the next round of OMHA playdowns. Catch you rinkside. “GET A GRIP” Before we leave on a journey to another country there are many things to be considered in preparation. So too our journey in life is but a preparation for our final abode. Therefore we need to get a grip of the realities of life and death and where we will be beyond the grave. The Bible is the only book that can give us with all authority what to expect once we breath our last. Its message is reliable and time tested. It addresses our human need by the God who created us; and it contains the only way of salvation provided by the Son of God at great cost to Himself. If we believe its message, we understand the meaning of life; why we are here, and most of all the wonders of the God of heaven who is most anxious to reveal Himself to those who trust Him. So get a grip, read the new testament with an honest heart and see for yourself. – Herb West, Box 870 Sundridge, P0A 1Z0 South River Curling Club Team Curling Results as of Thurs., Feb. 5, 2009 Points Monday Night Mixed Draw 2 Team1 Judy Arai Team 2 Neil Walkinshaw Team 3 Steve Anderson Team 4 Doug Raaflaub 40 18.5 23 42 Games 3 3 3 3 Monday Night Draw 1 Winners: Team 3 Doug Raaflaub, Christine Martin, David Boyce, Amanda Chrest 132 Team 1 Art Langford, Lisa Graham, Judith Maeck, Sharon MacDonald 110 Team 2 Steve Anderson, Neil Walkinshaw, Katy Anderson, Doug Tait 73 Team 4 Judy Arai, Everet Black, Ron Maeck, Lois Tait 63 Tuesday Night Competitive MacFarlane Construction Draw 2 Team 1 Paul Divincenzo Team 2 Judy Arai Team 3 Jeanne Hagey Team 4 Warren Wanless Team 5 Grant Wood 26 16 16.5 19.25 6 3 3 2 2 2 Thursday Morning Seniors South River Lumber, Farm and Pet Centre Trophy Draw 1 Winners Team 8 Christine Martin 110 Christine Martin, Gale and Brian McLaughlin, Ron Maeck Team 3 Jerry Legate 98 Jerry and Joan Legate, John and Jean McDermott Team 1 Bruce Carmichael 95 Bruce Carmichael, Tom Harries, Barb Hundley, Jack Kennington Team 3 Claude Reaume 91 Team 5 Doug Raaflaub 89 Team 7 Grant Wood 87 Team 2 Jack Lacombe 85 Team 11 Warren Wanless 79 Team 9 Wilf Hall 76 Team 6 Art Langford 68 Team 10 Dennis Landry 51 Don Ivens Senior Mixed Invitational Bonspiel Wed., Feb. 4, 2009 Winners 1st place from South River: Doug Raaflaub, Christine Martin, Faye and Claude Reaume 2nd place from Nosbonsing: Harry Kraus, Jackie and Danny Carroll, Marcel Laframboise Coming Events Thursdays 7 p.m. Pick Up Curling: Cost is $1 per end (minimum $6).
