How to establish WDS connection between Vigor2820n and
Vigor2800G under WPA mode (Repeater mode)
Below shows how can we establish WDS connection between Vigor2820n and Vigor2800G under WPA
mode (here we take Repeater mode as an example).
I. WLAN Configuration for Vigor2820n
General Setup for Wireless LAN

First, please access into Vigor2820n web configuration page and open Wireless LAN> General
Setup.

Enable Wireless LAN. For Vigor2800G can support 802.11G only, therefore, please choose 11g Only
as connection mode.

Set Wireless SSID. Such SSID must be the same as set in Vigor2800 web configuration page (in this
case, we use “ap28” as the Wireless SSID).

Choose a suitable Wireless Channel. Such channel must be the same as set in Vigor2800 web
configuration page (in this case, we choose Channel 8).
5.
Open Wireless LAN>>Security.
6.
Choose the encryption mode. Here we choose WPA/PSK. Please type the Pre-Shared Key. The
encryption mode selected here must be the same as set in the following WDS Settings page. Besides,
the encryption mode set in Vigor2800G also must be the same as the configuration set in this page.

Open Wireless LAN>>WDS.

For the mode setting, please choose Repeater.
9.
Choose Pre-shared key as the Security setting and click DrayTek WPA as the Type.
10. In the field of Peer MAC address, please type the Wireless MAC address of Vigor2800G..
**There are three options, DrayTek WPA, WPA and WPA2 for you to choose in Pre-shared key. If
you want to establish WDS connection between Vigor2820 and other router, please choose DrayTek
WPA to get the best compliance.
II. LAN and WLAN Configuration for Vigor2800G
For LAN Configuration
First, please open LAN>>General Setup of Vigor2800G. Make the first IP of Vigor2820n with the same
segment as set in Vigor2820n, but different IP address. Disable DHCP server. (In this case, the first IP
address for Vigor2820 is 192.168.1.1. Therefore, please modify the first IP address of Vigor2800G with
192.168.1.2). It can prevent IP conflict between the two Vigor routers.

For WLAN Configuration
1.
Access into Vigor2800G web configuration page and open Wireless LAN>> General Setup.

Check Enable Wireless LAN and choose 11g Only. As the mode which is the same as set in
Vigor2820n.

As for Wireless SSID, please type the same SSID set in Vigor2820n.

Choose a suitable Wireless Channel. Such channel must be the same as set in Vigor2820n web

configuration page

Open Wireless LAN>>Security.
6.
Choose the encryption mode. Here we choose WPA/PSK. Please type the Pre-Shared Key. The
encryption mode selected here and the Pre-Shared Key value must be the same as set in Vigor2820n.

Open Wireless LAN>>WDS.

For the mode setting, please choose Repeater.
9.
Choose Pre-shared key as the Security setting.
10. In the field of Peer MAC address, please type the Wireless MAC address of Vigor2820n.
III. View WDS Link Status
After finished the WDS connection between Vigor2820n and Vigor2800G, please open Wireless
LAN>>WDS from both routers and send Hello message to the other side. Next, open the following screen
to display the WDS link status.
*(U means successful connection)
Now, any PC on LAN of Vigor2800G can acquire an IP address from Vigor2820n DHCP server and access
into Internet through wireless connection to Vigor2820n.
Note:
Please pay attention to the following notes. If WDS connection is failed, please check the following items
first.

Wireless connection mode for both routers (AP) must be the same.
¾
Security settings for both routers (AP) must be the same.
¾
Wireless Channel settings for both routers (AP) must be the same.
¾
Except the first Access Point, DHCP function in all other APs must be disabled. (If not, please make
sure the IP addresses assigned by APs will not conflict for each other.)
¾
LAN IP for each AP must be set in the same network segment, but the IP address must be different.

Make sure MAC address of remote end is typed correctly.
¾
For Vigor router which supports WLAN function, no matter new model or old model, please choose
DrayTek WPA for WDS settings for the router supporting 802.11n to get the best compatibility.
