Application and admission
Application and admission
Applications will be accepted year round and reviewed on a monthly basis.
Applicants must obtain a master's degree before they are admitted to the doctoral program.
It is strongly recommended that applicants who did not receive their master's degree from a Swiss university
take the GRE (Graduate Record Exam) General Test. Applications without GRE test results will be reviewed,
but not submitting GRE test results will be considered a major drawback and must be offset by very strong
academic credentials (e.g., high grade point average).
Proficiency in English is required. No specific test is required, but applicants who have taken the TOEFL (Test
of English as a Foreign Language) are encouraged to provide a copy of the official test results.
You will be informed about the outcome of your application within six weeks after we have received your
application.
Applicants will only be admitted to the Doctoral Program in Neuroeconomics after funding for their studies has
been secured either by one of the chairs at the Department of Economics or by the applicant him/herself. If you
have already received funding for your doctoral studies, please remember to include a copy of the funding
approval in your application package.
Courses begin in September.

Funding Opportunities
Students are responsible for securing their own funding for their doctoral studies. Although there is no tuition at
UZH (only a small administrative fee of CHF 140 per semester), students must provide proof of their ability to
cover their living expenses in Switzerland. Funding opportunities include:
Employment at the Department of Economics
Grants and Scholarships
Employment at the Department of Economics
The individual department chairs select teaching/research assistants on a competitive basis. These positions
entail teaching assistance, research assistance, and administrative duties. As some assistants teach
undergraduate-level courses, knowledge of German is sometimes a prerequisite. Applicants should check the
requirements of the position they are interested in.
Information about open positions at the Department of Economics can be found here. Interested applicants are
also welcome to contact the secretary of any group they are particularly interested in. Note that employment as
an assistant does not guarantee admission to the doctoral program.
Grants and Scholarships
Many countries provide grants and scholarships for study abroad. There are also some competitive
opportunities in Switzerland. Applicants should inquire directly with the funding organizations (e.g., see links
below).
Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF)
In memory of the first female physician in Switzerland, Marie Heim-Vögtlin (1845-1916), the Marie HeimVögtlin subsidies are targeted to female researchers to increase the number of women in research.
