All K-8 programs are presented by MICHAEL BRANDWEIN, educator and author. NCDAA NOVEMBER 2011 DRUG AWARENESS MONTH ASSEMBLIES - PARENTS WHAT IS NCDAA? NCDAA is an all-‐volunteer drug prevention organization serving Northbrook since 1983. It helps to educate and inform people of all ages in our Northbrook community about the hazards of the use of alcohol, to-‐ bacco and other drugs by youth. The foundation of this program is youth and adult education with a focus on parenting. WHAT IS DRUG AWARENESS MONTH? It is an annual event when NCDAA sponsors educational programs for youth and adults. All K-‐8 students in Districts #27 #28 #30 #31 & St. Norbert receive the same assembly, and there-‐ fore hear the same information over a two -‐three week period in November. Educational materials are distributed to students and mailed to parents. It is a focused time for NCDAA to provide life skills assemblies to children and parenting skills to parents at Parent University and other parent education programs. WHY AN ASSEMBLY? In addition to many annual programs such as Parent University, the “Just Say No” Walk, and newsletters, NCDAA has also sponsored annual drug awareness assemblies to support and reinforce classroom instruction. The assembly is a unique way in which to present issues that young people face in today’s world. It gives students an opportunity to see how some of their day-‐to-‐day problems can be addressed. It shows them how to use positive skills to help them make healthy choices. Learning decision making skills beginning when they are very young serves as a good foundation for when they may have to make decisions about very serious issues such as using alcohol, tobacco or other drugs. Representatives from School Districts #27 #28 #30 #31 and St. Norbert and NCDAA have se-‐ lected the following programs for 2011. It is important that you know what your child will be learning so that you can reinforce the material in your home. Should you have any questions, please call NCDAA 847-‐272-‐7870 or [email protected] WHAT CAN PARENTS DO? * Ask your child about the assembly. * Discuss the issues of the assembly. * Ask to see the Drug Awareness Month material given to your child in school, and discuss it with him/her. * Use the Parent Resource Packet mailed to you as a catalyst for family discussions. All K-8 programs are presented by MICHAEL BRANDWEIN, educator and author.
