Why does Rosh Hashanah
come before Yom Kippur?
Dear Friends,
So why does Rosh Hashanah come before Yom Kippur? Wouldn’t it
make more sense for Yom Kippur to begin the Ten Days of Awe? In
other religious traditions the individual must repent first, and then once
purified and forgiven of their trespasses the individual celebrates his
personal renewal. Does the order of the High Holy Days even make
sense?
We all know how difficult it is to change. Even the smallest disruption in
our daily routines can throw us a major curve. The Rosh Hashanah
rhythm and themes help to move us to the spiritual place where we can
begin to reflect on being better people, better Jews. Without the
support of the congregation and the inspiration of prayer can we make
the push toward change? I doubt it. Michael Strassfeld in his classic
work The Jewish Festivals says that Rosh Hashanah needs to be first
because it represents hope. Rosh Hashanah is the spiritual pep rally
which gets our spiritual juices flowing. Hope girds us with the courage to
confront our shortcomings.
The 100 blasts of the Shofar on Rosh Hashanah help us to recall the
events of the past year and summon us to be spiritually present so we
can see ourselves more clearly. The sounds of the ancient Hebrew
prayers, the nearness of our family and neighbors, the endless flow of
poems and words combine to lift our spirits toward the Divine. It comes
but once a year; it is a date we literally cannot miss. Somehow the
predictable and familiar become dramatic and powerful.
Why does Rosh Hashanah precede Yom Kippur? Because, change must
be the conclusion of a process which begins with joy and hope. The taste
of honey and apples, the sound of the Shofar, the majesty of the Kol
Nidre remind us of what we have been missing, of what our souls crave.
It reminds us of how sweet it is to be together as a Jewish community
reaffirming our eternal covenant with the Holy One.

Lori comes with 30 years of experience as the Director of Early
Childhood Education at the Alpert JCC in Long Beach where
she resides. Lori also has undergraduate and master’s degrees
concentrated in elementary and early childhood education
(ECE). She remains connected to the ECE academic community
through her involvement on the executive board of the Beach
Cities Association for the Education of Young
Children and various other higher education-level committees dedicated to
mentoring and educating preschool teachers.

Tuvia Playground
Our Charlotte Diamond Concert to kick-off the summer was a huge success!
Thank you, thank you, thank you to the many Tuvia parents and Camp Menorah
staff who participated as volunteers and made it all possible. The event was cochaired by Tuvia parents, Leslie Friedberg and Megan Cotugno and generously
sponsored by Palos Verdes Medical Group, Isabella's Cookies, JOL Design, and
Fresh Brothers. With approximately 450 people in attendance, the show
generated about $4,000 to benefit the new Tuvia Playground Improvement Fund.
Over the past three years, through hard work and the giving hearts of our whole
Temple Menorah community and extended family members, we’ve raised a total of
$87,000 for the first phase of the playground improvement project and we are
excited to be able to say, “Pardon Our Dust!” Tuvia School’s new playground is
slated to be installed from Aug 20 – Aug. 31, during the break between camp and
the beginning of the school year.
Before the installation can begin, we need to prepare the area, including moving
sand from the smaller section of the playground to the larger one. We need
YOUR help one more time in order to save $3,000, which allows us to purchase
other more important equipment for the new playground. Bring your family,
neighbors, and friends, wheelbarrows, shovels, and smiles to our Sand Moving Day
on Sunday, August 19. In order to make this happen, we will work in shifts
throughout the day and need a minimum of 30 volunteers. Children can help, too!
The Playground Committee will be providing refreshments to all volunteers.

Tuvia’s new playground, named in memory of beloved Tuvia teacher Maureen
Liner, incorporates designated areas for art, music, storytelling, science, and play
structures that encourage dramatic play and engage and build children’s strength,
and teamwork skills. The new playground enhances Tuvia’s facilities and the
school’s reputation for excellence in the South Bay.
We invite the entire Temple Menorah community to join us for a special
dedication of our newly-renovated playground on Saturday, September 15, 2012,
immediately following services. We will have our Shabbat Kiddush on the

Youth Choir
If you're a kid in the Temple Menorah youth choir, you have a
lot to be proud of! Among all of your other performances and
achievements, you sang at the LA Kings Jewish Pride Night at
Staples Center and were hired to sing on a track in a recording
studio! I bet you're excited for what's in store for next year! If
you haven't participated in choir, now is your chance to shine!
We're trying something a little different this year. Choir
rehearsal will take place DURING Religious School hours, so unless there is a
performance or an extra scheduled rehearsal, there is no extra time commitment. In
addition to learning new music, participants will learn the basics of music, proper
singing techniques, and how to carry out show choir skills. 2nd -7th graders are
encouraged to audition to be part of Kol HaKavod, the Temple Menorah Youth
Choir. Sign ups and the calendar will be available on the first day of Religious School
(September 9th). I hope you can lend your beautiful voice to our team!
Adult B'nai Mitzvah
How would you feel if you could follow every Hebrew word and learn to chant the
prayers in the Shabbat service? Read from the ancient scroll of Torah? Feel
comfortable leading the congregation in an Aliyah from the bimah? Maybe you just feel
like it would be fun to go through with your own Bar/Bat Mitzvah because you never
experienced the ceremony at 12 or 13 years old? If you answered yes to any of these
questions, I invite you to join us for Adult B'nai Mitzvah. Adult B'nai Mitzvah is a 13
month course that will get you reading Hebrew, knowing the history and practice of
synagogue prayer, and ready and capable to lead the congregation in prayer and chant
from the Torah. The class will meet weekly for 90 minutes on Wednesdays from
6:45- 8:15 p.m. and move at a pace that makes it feasible to keep up, feel confident,
and stay motivated. Together with your classmates, you will reach a wonderful
milestone and become a learned Bar/Bat Mitzvah. For more information or for

Judaism 101 is a class designed for people who want
to gain an intellectual knowledge of Judaism as well as
the skills to perform basic rituals. It can also serve as
a “refresher” course for those returning to a more
active synagogue life. The class meets once a week

The high holidays will be upon us soon and
we will once again be supporting SOVA, by
asking you to bring in groceries during
Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur to feed
the homeless.
Feeding the homeless is a large part of our
mission. Once a month we provide food
and manpower at a local church to feed the
homeless. The next two dates for feeding
the homeless are August 23 and September
27. Please contact Allen Shall at

helping.
As Jews were are committed to making the
world a better place. We are looking for
ways to get our members more involved in
mitzvot for the Temple, for our
community, and Israel. So in the fall we
plan to start sponsoring monthly Mitzvah
projects for Temple members to be
involved in.

Meditations will explore the question; ‘Am I a good person?’ raised
by the eminent American psychologist Dan Ariely in his new book is
The Honest Truth About Dishonesty: How We Lie to
Everyone---Especially Ourselves.
Ariely is the James B Duke Professor of Psychology and Behavioral
Economics at Duke University. Most of us would argue that we are
indeed good people. Yet, Ariely’s research seems to show that under
certain circumstances we are willing to bend the rules, take advantage
of other peoples’ vulnerabilities and even cheat. This year’s panel of
outstanding
religious leaders will be presented with moral, ethical and legal
situations and asked to respond on three levels;

Am I a good person?
•
Am I a good Jew, Moslem, Christian?
•
What makes a good community?
The panel will once again be moderated by Palm Springs attorney
Clark Garen.
