The members are Registered Nurses, EMTS, Social Workers, and other interested parishioners who volunteer their time and expertise to benefit parishioners at St. Patrick Church. The Ministry meets only twice a year but facilitates the following: monthly blood pressure screenings, support to bereaved families, Mass of Remembrance, Mass of Anointing, as well as Bulletin health tips and health brochures and Care Notes in display cases in the church and center. The Ministry extends a welcome to anyone who would like to join. For more information, please contact Maggie Coolican 860 267-0540 or [email protected]. In our day and age there is a lot of skepticism and cynicism about religion and faith. People are weary of political leaders making promises they do not keep and, in general, there is a lot of mistrust of people in authority (whether it be teachers, pastors, chief executives or government leaders). Wouldn’t it be nice to see the Gospel lived? Wouldn’t it be heartwarming to experience the love of Jesus Christ? Such love is possible. I am very pleased to report that in a world with all of this skepticism, cynicism, and unbelief there are people who are making a difference. I personally was able to experience it this past weekend on the Men’s ACTS retreat in Willimantic. What make the ACTS retreat formula so special is nothing fancy-it is the Gospel lived. Twenty-seven team members (many of whom are from our parish) ministered to thirty one men from St. Patrick and St. Andrew/St. Francis. Fr Marek Masniki, pastor of St. Andrew, and myself both went as Walter and Mark and we both agreed that it was one of the most powerful experiences of our priesthood. Apparently I hid my identity quite well because many of the men did not realize that I was a priest! Many thanks to those who worked so hard behind the scenes to make the retreat happen! Your efforts bore great fruit. Amazing things happen when men put down their defenses, their walls, and allow themselves to be human. Isn’t this what Jesus did? The other thing that struck me about the weekend is the importance of community. The Gospel is not meant to be lived alone. Unless you have a specific vocation to live as a hermit (which is a very small percentage of people) you will live out your vocation, your calling, in a community. For many people this community is the family. Eventually, however, our community expands among friends and acquaintances at school, work, and in our town. At no time was God alone. God is a Trinity of persons, Father, Son & Holy Spirit, and you and I are called to live in a community as well. Hopefully, parish life here at St. Patrick is another key community in your life. Bearing with one another, learning to love, is the key to becoming more authentically alive, more authentically human. My prayer is that everyone will heed the call of Christ to discipleship and to live the Gospel. As they say when you work for the Church, the pay may not be much, but the benefits are out of this world. Ask any of the men who were on the ACTS team, or men and women who have been on a team in the past, to a person I am sure they will all agree: what you receive is far greater than what you give. And, as for me, it was an honor and privilege to be ministered to, and I hope and pray that “Walter” can grow into the Shepherd and Pastor that God wants me to be. Deo Gratias! The question is asked, “Is there anything more beautiful than a young couple with clasping hands and pure hearts in the path of marriage? Can there be anything more beautiful than young love?” And the answer given. “Yes, there is a more beautiful thing. It is an old man and an old women finishing their journey together on that path. Their hands are gnarled, but still clasped, their faces are seamed, but still radiant, their hearts are physically bowed and tired, but still strong with love and devotion for one another. Yes, a more beautiful thing than young love is old love.” (Unknown) Increased Giving The Increased Weekly Giving Program is very important to our financial stability. It is also important to show our gratitude to God for our many gifts by responding to the needs of our parish. If you have not returned your response envelope, please do so at the first opportunity. Page Five Twenty Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time Introduction-Liturgy of the Word: Sometimes when we hear the words of today’s Gospel about repaying Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God, we get caught up in an accounting problem and lose sight of the fact that everything belongs to God. As we gather for today’s celebration, let us remember that even when we think that we have earned everything we have, it is all still a gift—given to us by our loving God. How can we repay that? Diocesan News STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS “Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.” Matthew 22:21 In reality, everything belongs to God. We would have nothing if God had not given us the skills, talents and opportunities to accomplish what we accomplish. Therefore, we have an obligation to return a portion of our gifts to God, for all gifts come from Him and belong to Him. Great Family Movies in Theaters this fall! Today our missionaries are facing incredible odds as they labor in places like Africa where drought and the AIDS epidemic are causing enormous human misery. They need and rely on our support, through prayer above all, but also through our financial needs. Thank you for your generosity in the past and thank you for what you will do now to help our missionaries continue their vital work.
