Welcome The members of the ACTS community welcomed several men from our parish in last week’s bulletin who responded to God’s call. However, we missed one name that should have been on that list. Thank you Larry Puzzo for attending and participating. Your ACTS Brothers & Sisters This weekend the Fall Classic, the World Series, is being played. Although I am disappointed my Red Sox won’t be playing, I am cheering on the St. Louis Cardinals, after all, it is the “Cardinals” who elect the Pope, right? Seems appropriate to me! I came across an inspiring story in a book titled “And God said Play Ball” by Gary Graf. It is a story of forgiveness. One of the most important lessons Christ gave to his disciples was the concept of forgiveness. “For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you” (Mt 6:14) The story goes back to the summer of 1965. During an August game the Giant’s pitcher, Juan Marichal, had been aggressive in pitching the Dodger batters inside. Dodger catcher, John Roseboro, took exception to that tactic and when Marichal himself was batting, threw a ball back to the mound that reportedly nicked the Giant player in the ear. In response, Marichal turned on Roseboro, swinging his bat at the catcher. Before the two were separated, Roseboro’s face was bloodstained, the result of a two-inch gash on his forehead. If ever there was an incident in baseball where forgiveness would be difficult, this was it. Being attacked by a thrown ball, or worse a swung bat, goes beyond competitiveness and becomes a criminal assault. It would have been quite easy for Marichal, whose inclusion into the Hall of Fame was believed to be held up because of this incident, to be bitter. It would have been perfectly understandable for Roseboro to feel aggrieved and hold a grudge. But baseball, and life, is full of surprises. Fast forward a number of years and John Roseboro was lying in a hospital bed with two strokes, barely able to speak. “ I’m done” he mumbled to his wife and daughter. Dodger teammates from around the country rallied, but it was one phone call from a continent away, the Dominican Republic, that touched John the most. It was his friend Juan Marichal. “Please tell John to hang on” Marichal said. “Please tell him that I am praying for him.” Seventeen years after the incident Marichal approached Roseboro to publicly forgive him, hopefully convincing voters that he should be allowed into the Hall of Fame. “ John couldn’t see any reason not to forgive,” John’s wife Barbara said. “He wanted the pain of that day to go away.” Roseboro not only agreed, he flew to the Dominican Republic to play in Marichal’s golf tournament and show the baseball world that they were friends. A couple of months later, in 1983, Marichal phoned again. This time, he was crying. “He had just been elected to the Hall of Fame, and all he could say was ‘thank you, thank you, thank you.” Reached by phone to learn about Roseboro’s stroke Marichal’s voice broke again. “A wonderful, wonderful man.” He said. “I have long ago forgiven him, and I really hope that he has truly forgiven me.” Is there someone you need to forgive? Is there someone from whom you are withholding forgiveness? Let this story inspire you that even the most vicious attack can be overcome through love and forgiveness.
