As I sit in my hotel room in Saskatoon with papers spread all over my bed, watching American Idol, I can only remind myself
that this is was a good idea!! As you can see Golden Leaves has a new look! I hope you like it! We have moved to a colour
format and are using a professional layout and printing company. I have many people to thank for contributing to this issue
– you know who you are!

But I would mostly like to thank Lisa Williams ... I was on my way for a business meeting to Calgary one morning in December
at a God forsaken hour. I noticed a familiar face in the waiting area and it was none other than Lisa Williams! We had talked
briefly in the past about her coming on board to help with the GRCC in some way. When we went to board the plane ... we
were both in row 14 and sitting right next to each other ... seeing that this was an opportunity for two hours of GRCC
propaganda, I am happy to report that she is now the Advertising Editor and Co-editor of Golden Leaves.

Greetings from the East Coast!! By the time you read this newsletter, Christmas will have come and the New Year too.
It seems like yesterday we were getting ready for our Regional Specialty which was held on Oct.30th in PEI. I believe
Charmaine is giving a detailed report on that. Kudos to the Specialty Committee. They worked very hard.

The annual Club Awards were presented during the Rewards Reception which was held after the Specialty. We also
presented performance medallions for titles earned during the previous year. We had implemented these medallions with
the hopes of encouraging our members and their dogs to participate in the many other areas of competition for our goldens.
There were a total of 13 performance titles for 8 goldens and 6 applied for the championship medallions.

On another note, I recently was checking an advertising site on my computer. There was an advertisement “Golden Retriever
Puppies for Sale”. It indicated CKC Registered, vet checked, needles and male & female and puppies were on site and could
be seen. Price was $750.00. Out of curiosity I emailed and asked what clearances were being done – not expecting an
answer. However, this person quite proudly indicated no clearances were being done in order to keep costs down.
While our membership has a code of ethics to abide by as it relates to clearances of breeding stock, people such as these
think only about the money and not the resulting health of the puppies!
 

For 25 years Bruce and I had each heard the statement: “When you grow up and
get a house of your own, you can have a dog,” hundreds maybe thousands of
times. In 1985 we fulfilled both of those criteria. We went looking for a
Labrador Retriever breeder at the Metropolitan Dog show in the fall of that year.
While waiting for Labs to go into the show ring we watched Golden Retrievers
being judged. Bruce and I switched allegiance immediately. Bruce thought all
the Goldens were beautiful, I was smitten by two dogs in particular Ch.
Ambercroft’s Brasstacs Chianti and Ch Jeran’s John Henry. More by luck than
skill we found the common factor
linking Chianti and Trucker was Carol Lee of Ambercroft Golden Retrievers. I really
do consider us lucky to have acquired our first ‘fur kid’ from Carol. Carol’s
commitment to producing mentally and physically sound Goldens set us off to such a
good start. Carol became a great friend and mentor to us, we are forever grateful to
her for giving us such a great foundation in the breed and specifically for providing us
with a bad little red bitch named ‘Cairny”.

From the day we took her home, Cairny was smart and tenacious, even as a baby she
seemed to have a sense of humour. She never took anything too seriously, including
Bruce or I. In her life time I never knew her to startle from anything, I never heard
her growl (although she was always the obvious Queen B at Gowrielea). We took for
granted Cairny’s steady confident temperament. We wouldn’t know until we
witnessed less stellar Golden temperaments how fortunate we were to have had our
Cairny as a benchmark for mental soundness. Her independent nature taught us to
be more creative trainers. Her athletic, balanced ‘old style’ physique forced us to be
patient while she matured enough to finish her conformation championship (with
group placements). Cairny compelled and inspired us to be good students of the breed. Thank you Carol,
thank you Ch.Ambercrofts Brat of Cairngorm CDX WCI Am CDX WC JH.

Her AKC registered name was Abby’s Miss Strawberry Jenna but to all who knew and
loved her she was Jenny or to be very formal; Miss Jenny. When we lost our Springer
spaniel and we had our blind Springer still with us, my husband asked what is one breed
of dog that you have never owned that you would like. At that time the list was complete
with mutts, shepherd, lab, collie, afghan so a golden retriever it would be. Jenna came to
us from a breeder who had Frisbie field lines in Wells Minnesota and boy she had me at
wits end on most days as a puppy. I can only appreciate the perseverance of the folks at
CanDo dog training for many many patient sessions of Jenna running laps around the
training building. Jenna never was trialed to obtain her CD but to her last days her drop
on recall could not be beat. Sweet Sweet Jenny with her endearing “elephant ears”…my
first and the golden light of the many who have followed in her paw prints…

Ten year old girls with hearts

Last year, the Golden Retriever Club of Manitoba had a
fundraiser to help defray the costs of the many rescue dogs
that we were receiving in poor health. I, along with other
club members, had solicited the help of all the “dog” people I
could think of including those people whom I had sold
puppies to in the past.

Throughout the summer, they had numerous events,
including a garage sale and various lemonade stands and
the three girls (with some casual help of other friends)
managed to raise $212.00 for the Golden Retriever Club of
Manitoba. Last night, the president of our club, Marshall
Emek and I went over to the Skylar’s home so they could
“present” us with their hard earned donations.

Over the summer, Skylar along with friends Faith Ludlow and
Leah Hicks, started selling lemonade on street corners to
raise money for Golden Retrievers that needed help. Much
to their mom’s surprise, these girls formed “The Golden
Retriever Club”. When their moms explained to them that
there was already a Golden Retriever Club, they decided to
create the “Junior Golden Retriever Club”.

One of the families that I had sold a puppy to the previous
year has a 10 year old daughter, Skylar Ferbers. Skylar
decided that she and her two friends needed to do something
on their own to help.

an owner handler
As the Vice President of the Canadian Professional Handlers
Association, I have been asked by many (both novices, and long
time breeders) for references on Professional Handlers. It has
come to mind that there are guidelines for basically every aspect
of dog shows –whether it be conformation, obedience, rally,
Juniors, agility….but no where is it written on how to find the
right Professional for you .

I try to get new people to run pre-lims on their younger dogs
BEFORE they take on the task of showing them).

I have been a professional all breed handler for the past 23 years.
My involvement with dogs started in the late seventies. My first
“client” was my godparents dog. A handsome rambunctious
Golden Retriever. This was the first dog I ever finished, and I was
paid with a brand spanking new pair of Cowboy Boots that I so
desperately wanted but could not afford. To this day, I still wear
those boots! That was it, I was hooked……Now, I look back on
those photos and cant believe judges actually pointed at us when
I look at the grooming. I “thought” it was superb .In fact, it was
atrocious, but as a novice handler at 16 yrs old, I had caught the
bug . Wanting to learn more and more about this magnificent
breed, I spent many hours under the guidance of Paula Edwards
from the famed Glynspur lines. And so started a life long love of
the Golden Retriever. This in turn paved the way for my chosen
Profession.

most asked of myself in my profession. This also leads me into the
question “Should I Hire A Professional Handler?”

their contract.) A small percentage have visions of glory with
making thousands of dollars if they have a Champion dog in
their possession

• As an owner, have you ever thought of presenting your dog
Now one would think with my chosen line of work that when a
Novice approaches me to show a dog I would automatically say
yes. Not so. No matter the breed, I ask the following questions to
feel out the reasons they have chosen to approach a handler.
yourself? (This is often met with gasps of astonishment, as they
have been told a quick Championship is obtained by using a
Professional.) I like to strive for the fact that if this is going to be
a family hobby, then there are handling classes available that will
enable them to showcase their dog’s talents, whilst having fun in
the ring. Many people are not comfortable in the conformation
ring and so wish to hire a handler. Many have not ever given it a
try and don’t know what they are missing out on.
My general responses from people is that “HANDLERS ALWAYS
WIN” which again irks me to no end. As a Professional Handler,
there is nothing that intimidates us more, than to go up against
the powerful Breeder/Owner/Handler. These are the true dog
people of the sport. They know their breed inside out, they have
hours to spend on only preparing their ONE breed for the
competition. A Professional Handler must juggle many different
breeds in a day, and hope that nothing conflicts with a scheduled
SQUARE ONE.
To be or not to be an owner handler.
For yes, that is the question most asked of myself in my profession.
This also leads me into the question “Should I hire a professional handler?”

Are we overvaccinating
our animals?

The core vaccines she recommends your dogs should
have are distemper, parvovirus and rabies. The
vaccines that most owners are used to giving are a
combination of several vaccines, a “cocktail” that she
refers to as the “mombo combo”. The use of multiple
vaccines needs to be re-examined as the risks of giving
them simultaneously and repeatedly can have
disastrous consequences.

Where do you stand on vaccines? Do you vaccinate on
a yearly basis? If you are a breeder do you give your
puppy shots as you always have? If the answer to these
questions is YES, then you might think about
researching this subject. Better yet, if one of Dr. Jean
Dodds seminars on Vaccines and Immunity were ever
available in your area, I’d highly recommend you
attend. I had the privilege of attending one of her
workshops held this past May in conjunction with The
Canadian Association of Professional Pet Dog
Trainers Conference held in Fredericton, New
Brunswick.

For those who are not familiar with Dr. Dodds, she is
an internationally recognized authority on vaccines
and the effect they have on the immune system. She
has a wealth of information that helps you to make an
informed decision about vaccinating your animals.

Dr. Dodds is the first to tell you that vaccines are
important to protect our animals against serious
infectious diseases. However, she says there is no
scientific evidence that shots should be given annually.
She stressed that we need to be aware of the “proper”
use of vaccines and that if we do not use them
properly, we may actually increase the risk of adverse
reactions or trigger immune-mediated and other
chronic disorders (called vaccinosis).
There are times when vaccinations should be avoided
such as:
• when an animal is ill
• 30 days before estrus
• during heat cycle
• during pregnancy
• while a bitch is lactating
Vaccines were not intended to be given to very young
animals. According to Dr. Dodds,he optimal age for
the immune system to respond in puppies is 12 weeks.
By 9-10 weeks the immune system is closer to an adult
immune system and so better able to handle antigenic
challenge and that is why she suggests that age to start
vaccines. Puppy/dog owners should always be
cautioned to pay particular attention to their puppy’s
behavior and general health following any vaccination.
If a puppy/dog has a reaction to a vaccine DO NOT
revaccinate again.
Dr. Dodds recommends the following vaccine
protocol:
• 1st @ 9-10 weeks – Distemper & Parvovirus
• 2nd @ 14 weeks – Distemper & Parvovirus
• 3rd optional @ 16-18 weeks – Distemper &
Parvovirus
• 4th Rabies – no earlier than 20 weeks and even later
is better ALWAYS give separately (not in
combination with other vaccines).

Getting our feet wet...

I started off on the show side of the fence, and wanted to get a WC
on my dog essentially as a way to get points for Versatility, but
then I got hooked! A training friend got us out hunting, and
before I knew it I had taken my firearms and hunting courses, had
a shotgun, a 4WD truck, and Winter had turned into a pheasant
fiend! He won the Nan Gordon at the 2007 specialty in Quebec,
which has to have been one of the most gratifying
accomplishments we’ve had. He is officially CKC/UKC Ch.

WCX CCA. We’re plugging away at the CKC WCX together, and
so far the water blind has been his nemesis. Working with him I
learned about the importance of a strong foundation if intending
to move on to the more advanced levels of testing.

So, who am I to be taking on this job? Well, I make no claim to be
an expert trainer, but I am actively training and testing my dogs,
and hunting with them. I’ve gone from being the girl with the big
blond show dog, to a handler venturing into the world of
multiples and blind retrieves, and a judge of WC’s and hunt tests.

Welcome to the new WC and Hunt Test column for the Golden
Leaves. Our Vice President Marg Bethune approached me about
taking on this task for the refreshed Golden Leaves.

The last couple of years much of my training has been devoted to
giving my girl Breeze a strong foundation and getting her ready
To add to the training load, I am currently running Breeze’s son
Butch through basics, with the intent to have him out after his
JH in the spring. So I have a full truck, and thank goodness, an
enthusiastic and dedicated bunch of training partners.
My intent in this column is to encourage Golden owners to
venture into the wonderful world of field work with their
Goldens. My own home club, the GRCGT, is hosting the
National this July in Stratford and I would love to see a huge
turnout at the field tests. A WC is certainly within reach with
some preparation and training.
So where should you start?
•
Familiarize yourself with the regulations—you need to
know what to expect, and to be fair to your dog, you need to
know what would DQ you! The WC and Hunt Test rule
books are both available online in the members section of
the CKC website, or for purchase through the CKC. I would

It has been a busy fall for the Maritime Golden Retriever Club and its
members; our Annual Specialty, “Heart of Gold” was held in
Charlottetown, PEI on October 30th. Those results can be found
elsewhere this newsletter. Foremost, I would like to thank all of the
MGRC members for their dedication and hard work in ensuring the
success of the Specialty: the Specialty Committee (Chair-Deborah
Fraser, Chris Gallant, Kristina McLane and myself ), the Breed
Information table (Wendy and Rod March), the Silent Auction (Linda
Grant) and every other member that contributed to the tasks leading
up to specialty.
The weekend was capped off with a 2 hour seminar given by
Specialty Judge Jeffery Pepper. Many took advantage of the
opportunity to learn more about the breed standard and its
interpretation. Perhaps the best aspect of all was the hands-on
learning opportunity using dogs that won at the Specialty the
previous day.

I’m unsure where to begin in covering the specialty, as it was such an
eventful, memorable day. Perhaps I’ll list a few moments from the
Specialty that stick out in my mind … Esther Cox winning the Robert
G. “Bob” Cox Memorial Trophy was a treasured moment, young handler
Daniel Filmore winning the specialty with “Bijou”, Don Scott earn HIT
(198) with his girl “Tori” at 80 years of age, Rod & Wendy March’s
veteran “Dublin” “borrowing” a stuffed golden toy from the judge’s
table and parading around the ring with it in his mouth, and of course
making new golden friends. I have to put in a special mention to
Shawn Kelly for his kilt & brace obedience team, and thank him for
organizing the team obedience (4 goldens performing at the same
time – a sight to behold!); it was an experience I’ll never forget, made
even better by the cool “GoldMembers” t-shirts designed by Shawn.
The Awards Banquet was a great way to wrap-up the Specialty. Suzi
Beber of Smiling Blue Skies donated a beautiful hand-crafted bracelet
for the auction, and an MGRC member donated a signed, out-of-print
copy of Judge Jeffrey Pepper’s book ; both items caused small bidding
wars! MGRC Lifetime Memberships were awarded to Linda Grant,
Gerry & Linda Cormier and Val Corner that evening, in honor of their
dedication to the club over the past 30 years. The Annual Awards for
2008 were also presented at the Banquet:
The Golden Retriever Club of Newfoundland participated in the
Downtown St. John's Christmas parade again this year. The day turned
out to be nice and dry - always good when one has goldens - and we
had about 13 Golden's in attendance ranging in age from almost 10
down to 5 months of age. As usual, the Goldens were the crowd
pleasure - they spent their time going into the crowds, getting pats
and giving many kisses to many of the children lining the route. All
golden owners were then invited back to the home of Rod and Wendy
March for seafood chowder and beef stew. A great day was had by all.
We have a number of recent accomplishments by our MGRC members:
“River”, CH Toplook's Mystic River CDX, owned by Esther Cox, earned
his WC and JH last fall. Esther’s other boy “Trail”, Gowrielea Cabot's Trail
AM/CDN CD WC, earned two legs toward his JH.
Tracy Snyder has had a busy fall with her goldens, adding a number of
new titles: Fittingly at the Maritime Golden Retriever Regional
specialty “Trinity” Can Ch BDA Ch UKC Gr Ch Canwin’s Guess Whatum
Think N RE CD finished her CD with a first in Novice B and a score of
196.5. Trinity picked up 2 HITS this weekend as well. Two weeks later
Trinity finished her Rally Excellent title with a 1st in Excellent B class
and 100 score. December was a busy as well as rewarding month for
“Heist” Can Ch Glenmor Elysian Stealun D Show CDX RN CGN as he
finished his CDX with two HITS out of the 4 times entered and also
received his Can Championship with a BOW and BOB Grp 3rd. Thank
you to Jr Colton O’Shea and Graeme Burdon at the other end of the
lead. Am Ch Can Ch BDA Ch UKC Ch Prospectors Guess Whatum Up To
CGN OD “Guess” continues to shine in the mother category. This year
her puppies surpassed even my dreams when they climbed over 112
