All are available on the iTunes store. Some have proven very popular but others I have used rarely or for just a short period of time. I’ve been delighted with the apps recommended by others during this course so please feel free to add to this post and together we should be able to compile a pretty comprehensive listing of apps for use in Primary Schools. English: Dr Seuss. Joanne has already recommended the Dr Seuss Apps. These are fantastic interactive books which kids love. The stories can be read to you or read yourself. Recently an update allowed you to record your own narration (or perhaps give the chance to record their own narration). I also love the fact that when you touch an object or word on the page it tells you what it is. This is great for kids who might otherwise have difficulty reading. There is now a Dr Seuss bookshelf app where your books are more easily accessible and new ones are available for purchase. Hare and Tortoise is an interactive book telling the story of the race between the two. Kids Flashcards for iPad: Features a range of flashcards on a range of topics. Very suitable for young learners or EAL students. Sesame books: Access to a range of books from Sesame Street. KidsOpedia: Introduction to letters, numbers and a few other categories. Also allows you to create profiles for the children and to give them quizzes. Toy Story: Again this is an interactive book but is very popular. Spelling City: I use the website equivalent a lot. There is now an accompanying app. It’s a great way to create spelling test lists and create games based on these. Storytelling: Book Creator has already been touched on in this forum but for me is one of the best apps out there. A similar app is Composer. Comic Life has also been touched on but it’s the best app out there for creating comics. It can also be used in conjunction with Book Creator to create comic books. For planning stories SimpleMind+ is a great mind mapping tool. A similar one is iThoughtsHD though this one is quite expensive and only offers a few extra features. SimpleMinds does a great job and also works great if you view it on an Interactive Whiteboard. Epic Citadel: this is actually a demo for a game but allows you to take a walk through a medieval town and castle. It works great for oral language activities. Take a stroll and then get the children to create a commentary or describe what they see. It also looks amazing. 2 Rory’s Story Cubes. Based on the very popular tool this app is a great resource for creating stories (sometimes very unusual ones).
Phonics Pocket Phonic: The kids seem to really like this one (despite the strong American accent). It helps them with phonics as well as writing letter shapes. Dolsch Words: A simple app covering the Dolsch List. Other phonics apps are Mels Phonics Blending Sound Sorting (Beginning Sounds) ABC Phonics Phonics Genius ABC Alphabet Phonics FW Sampler Letters lite Speech with Milo (There are a range of different apps based on these characters). Maths I’ll just list these briefly. Many are free though some involve a small cost. Math Splat Math Bingo Tanzania Lite (teaches Tangrams) Invaders (again a range of different apps focusing on different areas but unfortunately involve a different cost for each. It’s based on the old Space Invaders game and is a lot of fun to play‐though sometimes a little difficult) Add coach Math Puppy Pop Math Mathmateer (formally known as Rocket Math). This one has been touched on earlier in the course but is definitely a favourite of the kids). Motion Math Bee Bot (This is actually a basic introduction to programming. It gets progressively harder but the children I have at the moment seem to really enjoy the challenge). Pizza 1 (fractions). TimesTables Tables HD Safari math (suitable for very young learners). Mathaliens Chalkboard Addition Khan Academy (the app from the very popular website with a range of videos on absolutely everything). Algebra Touch A simple app which is useful is Convert Units. It converts everything from length to weight to temperature and many more besides. Everything you could possibly need to convert. Gaeilge: Unfortunately not many out there but things are starting to improve. Cúla Caint: an app from TG4 with simple flashcards and a child’s voice. Bábóg Baby: Based on the popular toy it teaches colours, numbers and shapes. 3 Greann Gaeilge: Helpful for older students Ó chrann go crann: A beautifully illustrated story which is read to you or you can read it yourself. It is also possible to read to in English. I should point out that in Irish she does have a very strong Northern dialect. Science: iSeismometer: If you are doing anything on earthquakes you can now see how they are measured. Place it on a desk or the ‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐or and get the kids to hop around the room. It records the movement. 3D Brain is a beautiful model of the brain which can be rotated around. Video Science: A host of videos on different experiments, etc. Simple circuits: Create simple circuits and see how electricity travels around them. Bobo and light: This is actually a book but is highly entertaining and has some very interesting facts. Animal Atlas: Fascinating animals from around the world. Life Cycles: Basic but covers the life cycles of a range of different animals, etc. Others I use are the National Geographic (iPad version). If you can still track it down the Titanic issue earlier this year was a fantastic resource with 3D models and videos. The children’s National Geographic is also available. I have a crazy fascination with space and some of my favourite apps are; Solar Walk. One of the most beautiful apps out there. It has information on all the planets and also shows the location of satellites in real time. It also has some beautiful videos on the sizes of the planets, tides, and much more. Expensive but so worth it. Brian Cox Wonders. A book by the famous scientist but a book showcasing what a book on the ipad can do. Videos, illustrations and animations. It’s an amazing book. PUniverse: Ever wondered what that star in the sky is called. Hold your iPad up and it will show you what you are seeing as you move around. Blackrock Observatory has a similar app. Hubble Top 100: Amazing images taken by Hubble over the years. Mars Globe and Moon Globe: Basically simple maps you can rotate and zoom in on. I will add more over the coming days. Mathamateer (was called Rocket Maths until a few weeks ago). The kids really love this one. You build a rocket which you fly to space. The better your rocket the longer it flies and the more time you have to answer questions and get a higher score. To make your rocket better you need to play some Maths games. I particularly like this app as it includes most of the Strand units. The only downside is the money section which is US dollar based. However for all other strands it is particularly useful. Pop Maths is basic enough but it’s a fun way to practice addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. 6 Maths Bingo is a very simple game which is again very popular. This is generally done as a group activity and allows us to practice tables in a fun and interesting way. Many teachers may use bingo as a maths activity and it can be very helpful in revising tables. In the past I have created maths bingo cards based on whatever tables we are covering but using this app has added a little more interactivity while also saving a considerable amount of time in preparing bingo cards. http://itunes.apple.com/ie/app/math‐bingo/id3... Math Splat covers the areas of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The children are given maths equations and must touch the correct answer. The volume may need to be turned down a little. The sound effects are a little rude sounding but the children love it. Learning Tables is Fun HD: This app again covers the areas of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The app also contains images related to the numbers on screen which can be very helpful for children who may need to count objects to get the answer. The answers are then dragged into position. The following Apps are basic but can be used as rewards or for children to practice particular concepts some more. Add coach: This App is quite simple. A number appears on the screen and the children are asked to make this number using the numbers 1 through 5. It’s a nice warm up exercise for kids and helps them to see all the possible ways you can make up a number. Sum stacker: Again this is a simple App. It is a short problem solving app where children must move a variety of different objects around (e.g. dice) to create certain numbers. Other Curricular areas Tanzen: This is an App on the area of Tangrams. There is a free version available to test with your class first. It is basically the same as the tangrams you may use in the class at present. Children are given the outline of a shape and manipulate the tangram pieces into position. Clues are available (limited to 2 per shape) to help you when you get stuck. Pizza Fractions‐Beginning with simple fractions: This app helps children with fractions. You can set the difficulty level from Easy to Hard. I am contributing two chapters. One is based on the creation of digital books and the other is on the use 7 of video in second language learning. I have also just completed a Masters Thesis on this. This is a quick overview of what will be in the book.
Using video to support second language learning is not a new idea. Teachers have used clips from TV shows, movies and specially created language videos in the classroom. These can be very useful in showing children how the language is spoken in different scenarios. However many of these contain language which is beyond the grasp of most learners. There is also the worry that many children watch these videos passively. They don’t get to contribute but simply watch the videos trying to pick out what language they can. In many instances the video is used for entertaining rather than teaching students. However with a device like the iPad it is now possible for the children themselves to create the video resources to be used in the classroom. In doing this the children are actively engaged in creating the resources they will use and it also offers children the opportunity to use the language in a way which encourages collaboration and the use of the second language in an informal setting. The resources created while very useful within the classroom setting that created them could also be used in other classes within the school. I have been using video creation as a way of motivating children to learn the Irish language. Despite being compulsory for all children the standards of spoken Irish in Ireland remain very low with as little as 2% of the population speaking the language on a daily basis outside the education system. Children find the language difficult to master and in many instances the way it has been taught has led to less motivated children. Using child created video has re‐instated some of this motivation to speak the language by allowing the children to create fun dramas which are then filmed and used as a resource in the language classroom. For many children learning a second language is difficult. Having spent a few years learning the sounds of letters in their first language they now find that in another language letters make different sounds. This can lead to teachers continuously stopping children to correct pronunciation mistakes. But in the real world we meet tourists who while not quite being fluent in another language can still be understood. In the first instance we should focus on meaning. Grammar and pronunciation mistakes can be rectified later. The use of drama is a popular way of teaching a new language. The creation of a video adds a further element to this process. The chief advantage of doing this is that the videos are there to be watched again when revising the language. The videos can also be rewound to go back over language that may not have been picked up the first time. Subtitles can be added further showcasing the language being used. The greatest advantage to using video however is the increase in children’s motivation to speak and use the language. Children gain confidence through repetition of the language. Even children with difficulties can take part in the exercise. Mistakes can be easily removed or re‐shot which can helps boost confidence amongst children. Even a child who is finding the language difficult only has to get it right on one take. This one take is a permanent record of their success and will help motivate them to take chances again in the future. The initial filming of the video should focus on meaning. The children should be allowed to make mistakes. Oral language in itself is more informal than the written word and mistakes should be expected. However it is from these that children will learn. While the creation of the videos and the language used during the filming process is important what is equally important is how the videos are used after the task has been completed. Children should have the opportunity to watch themselves speaking the language. Whole class discussions can occur later on everything from pronunciation to meaning. They can also become a very valuable teaching resource. Consider how a child next September would react to watching one of the children in an older class explaining a concept to them in a video they had created. This is also helpful in giving an audience to the children when setting out to create a video. Another aspect which video allows is for sharing with the parents of the children. Copies of the children’s videos could be sent home allowing the parents (who may not be able to speak the second language) to keep up to date with what is being covered in class. Watching these videos may also encourage the parents to begin using the language themselves at home. There are two main methods to creating the video. The first is to use a digital video camera to film the dramas. A Tripod and external microphone are helpful but not always necessary. In fact filming could also be done using an iPad Touch, iPhone or any similar device with video recording capabilities. What is filmed can then be edited using software such as iMovie. For many teachers this is where the main difficulty arises. Editing requires a certain skill set which many teachers may not have. While software such as iMovie has made the process far easier it is still a task which requires certain skills and time to complete. A far easier method is to utilise an Apple iPad. Puppet Pals is an app which allows you to create animations in no time and with very little or no editing needed. The app itself is free to download though you can pay extra to download a range of backgrounds and characters to use. It is also possible to import your own images meaning a child can include themselves in the animation. The process involves moving the characters around the screen recording the audio simultaneously. Then it is simply a case of pressing save and exporting your finished animated movie. It can also be exported into iMovie where other edits can be done but in most instances this is not necessary. When learning any language confidence in using that language is always important. Automatic responses to commonly used questions and phrases help build this confidence. In linguistic terms this is referred to as Automaticity. If someone asks you your name then having an automatic response to this question is helpful. While the term rote learning is not considered fashionable these days a certain amount of it is essential in learning any language. By creating scripts with the children dramas can be written which showcase some of these automatic responses. Through repetition during the rehearsals phase the children become more 8 comfortable with this language. The use of video assists in this as it allows the children to watch and listen to themselves speaking the language.

I really do believe that we have to offer children an opportunity to share their stories in formats other than the written word. We are quickly moving into an era where ideas and stories can be easily shared in a multitude of ways. One of these is video. Someone recently pointed out to me that in effect You Tube has become our instruction manual. Instead of trawling through an instruction booklet we can instead watch a video on how to do something. Creating videos such as this can also be done on the iPad. The camera feature is one I use a lot and the children find it very easy to use. A video can be created using the iPads in built camera and an app such as iMovie can then be used to edit this. It doesn't have as much functionality as say video editing software on a Mac or PC but for classroom purposes it is still very useful. Video also gives a child who may have literacy difficulties to excel and share their story. As I mentioned earlier I used it today with a child in Junior Infants and the reaction of his teacher when he returned was great to see. Apologies for the delay in putting up stuff tonight. I was giving a presentation to teachers in Cork Education Centre and got inundated with questions afterwards. Tonight I wanted to touch on one particular app I use in Oral language lessons. The App is called Puppet Pals. The basic app is free to download but you can pay a few euro more for a range of backgrounds and characters. It allows you to create simple animations quickly and easily and the results are bound to please the children. It is also possible to add in your own backgrounds and even images of the children themselves. I have used it primarily in the teaching of Irish. Having used Drama a lot in Irish I noticed that the one thing which was lacking was the opportunity for the children to actually listen to themselves speaking Irish. Creating short animations means the children can create a video in Irish. We then use these as a whole class teaching tool where we watch each others videos and give them a chance to spot pronunciation or grammar errors. The children get a great kick out of watching their “movies”. Another real plus to this is that the movies can be out on the class website or DVD to take home. My hope is that when the parents watch the movie they may be more inclined to use a cúpla focal at home which can only be a good thing. It is also possible to add them to a digital book created using Book Creator. This can be a really interesting project. Get the children to write a story and then get them to create an animation based on this story. I used this app today with a child from Junior Infants. His first language isn’t English but he had listened to the story of The Sleeping Beauty earlier in class. I gave him the chance to tell me the story he had heard and create a short animation. This helps you to create fantastic looking comics using illustrations created by the children as well as images taken from the Internet. This is also available to download
for use on a Mac or PC but the iPad version is vastly superior and easier to use. I have used this to create posters for use in the classroom as well as allowing the children to create their own comics.
It works in much the same way as Book Creator with the same icons being used. Once children get the hang of Book Creator they will easily pick up Comic Life. I particularly like using comics with children as it
helps them to create stories which they may not otherwise have the language to do. Much of the story is told in the pictures which can be great for an emerging writer. Many of the children can be inspired to write a
story based on their comics after. I have attached a copy of a comic we created on the Titanic. 33 children-33 images with each child responsible for writing the accompanying text. Some of the children wrote just a
few words while others wrote a few sentences but all really enjoyed the look of their comic after. It looks really professional and the parents loved getting the email with the children’s work attached.
I have also attached a document in PDF format which runs through the basic steps to creating a book using Book Creator and a comic using Comic Life. I’ve only just noticed however that the prices have gone up
since I created the document. Its worth bearing in mind that occasionally the price of Apps can fall as a special promotion but in comparison to the cost of similar software for a PC it is a much cheaper and in my
9 opinion better option. The children enjoyed using the Apps on an iPad far more than using equivalent software on a PC. I should also also point out that I am also no longer at Burnfort National School but now at
Carrigaline Educate Together National School in Cork. :)

This is my first time using Edmodo so forgive me if I am a little slow in getting going. I’m going to start with a little about creating Digital Books which is definitely one of my favourite things to do with a class on the iPad. If you click on this link you will get a video that was created in my classroom last year on using the Apple iPad to create a Digital Book. It gives a brief outline of why I created digital books in the first place and it will also give you a look at how I use it in the classroom. At the time I had just one iPad in the classroom (33 kids) but its important to note that every child does not have to have access every day. I'm very conscious of the fact that many of you will be starting small with perhaps your own iPad. Each week a group took the iPad and created a digital version of a book they had created in the traditional way. What I hadn't expected however is that the children would start working on stories at home that they wanted to create digital versions of. Each week I was inundated with books and stores from the children. Some of these were simply a few sentences while others were getting pretty close to a novel. as a result I had to invest in a second iPad which made things a little easier. First and foremost I was amazed at this extra motivation to write at home for fun. The children really enjoyed the experience of typing up their book, photographing their illustrations and then creating the digital book to share with others. It was great to see this. Some of the children were daunted by the idea of writing their story using just a pencil and paper. The children saw the final products from creating the book and seemed less daunted by the digital route meaning that even children who had literacy difficulties were willing to give it a go. We used an App called book Creator (currently €4.49). This is a really easy to use application but the results look great. It is also possible to add a narration of the book to each page which is a wonderful feature. Recently the option of adding a video has been included. The addition of a narration meant that each child could record themselves reading their own story. It also meant that if another child was reading their book and found some of it difficult they could ask for the narration and then follow along themselves. I will shortly share a dropbox folder with you where I will put up some of the books recently created by the children so you can download them to your own iPad and see what is possible. These books were all 10 Fac Gp – NR created entirely by the children and I did not assist with spellings or grammar so there may be some small errors. But I wanted the children to just enjoy writing for fun and we used the books as springboards in the class to go over some of the grammar rules at a later stage. Not all of us were destined to use the written word. Over the past few days the newspapers (I read the digital versions) have been lamenting the loss of the written word. RTE is running an ad saying that its not really Christmas till you receive a written card. But perhaps we should not be focussing on what we are losing but what we are gaining. A worldwide audience for the animations, movies, digital books, comics, etc that children can now create. A bright rosy future where every kid gets the chance to shine. I am currently uploading a few more videos so I will post the links tomorrow along with the passwords. The videos were created by the INTO last year as part of an online course. They cover "Creating Digital Books", Using Video in the classroom", "Using Apps in Maths" and "Using the Internet". I guess the last one does not really cover Using Apple in the classroom but might still be useful. In the one on video while I do not refer specifically to Apple I did use iMovie on a Mac to edit the footage. We also used an iPad for some of the filming we have done in the classroom. You may need to go into the books section in iTunes when your iPad is syncing to click the book to have it included in your iBooks folder. As for the Apple TV i definitely think its the way to go. It gives you the freedom to teach from anywhere in the room and not be tied to a desk which is the real advantage of the iPad. You can get an adaptor that plugs directly into the whiteboard but it does mean you can't move around as much. Many of the older projectors are VGA though so you might need to look into getting an adapter. Again this is adding to the cost but in the long term it is far more suitable. If you are only now looking into projectors find one with a HDMI port. Its the way things are going. On that though I recently spoke to a school where they are dispensing with Interactive Whiteboards. This school has 30 projectors and their worry is that once the bulbs start failing they are going to be left with a huge bill. They are looking at getting 72" HD TV's instead of Interactive Whiteboards. The life expectancy is far greater and there are no bulbs to be replaced. The screen size is suitable for any classroom. The only 11 Fac DT ‐ R downside is that it wouldn't be interactive from the TV but I guess in this case its the iPad that is interactive and as it can be used from anywhere in the room it means you don't really lose anything. I have just moved to a new school where we are only embarking on an ICT route and I definitely think this is well worth looking at. I think its available for free at the moment. it allows you to jazz up your photos tp make them look even more amazing and is really easy to use. Its a wonderful app. I am using it with EAL students and its proving very popular. I don't know if you have used the website at all but the app contains some of the videos featured on the site. If you have children yourself or nephews and nieces its an amazing site to visit.. You can create a personalised video message from Santa for children and use images and information about them. The first time I used it my nephews jaws hit the ‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐or. There are also some nice tutorials available on the Apple site as well as on You Tube. In fact for tutorial;s of any kind You Tube can be pretty amazing. If you have used something like Windows movie Maker at all the different layout can be a little confusing at first. I made the switch about 3 years ago and don't think I could ever return. I also find it amazing that the extra features you get are great to use. There is a Green Screen feature in iMovie which allows you to film the kids in front of a green screen and then place any background you want in after. We used it last year to create a documentary on Ancient Greece. We had the kids walking around the Acropolis. We also used it in our Fís Film Festival entry this year. The kids used a green sheet to make a ship look like it was sinking. Again there are tutorials on this but if you would like I could create one to run through any of the aspects you would like to use. I will also be posting a video later today on using video in Maths. I used to use a PC when we were editing our entry each year but switched to iMovie on the Mac about 3 years ago. Since then our movie making skills have taken off. I'll be putting up a post about this later in the week. If you would like to use the video feature on the iPad then Puppet Pals or Toontastic are a great place to start. Its a quick and easy way to create short animations to use in the classroom. I sometimes create short stories at home which I use as a resource in the class. Its a particularly useful way to introduce the Irish language. I recently did the story of the 3 little pigs. I created a short movie which included the phrases I wanted them to focus on. It was a great way to introduce the lesson. The only downsides to it are the American accent (a common issue). A way around this would be to use something like My Spelling Test which allows you to create your own spelling tests. However you can also record yourself reading out the words so you could include a phonics exercise as part of this. A website I have used a lot with the children is Spelling City. They now have an app where you can create your own spelling tests and there are also a great range of games based on the words you put in the list. A favourite with the kids is HangMouse. Beginning sounds Interactive game will help children with initial sounds. Its usually only every 2 years though . Its been an incredible experience. During the summer we had a Global conference (held in Cork) with over 250 ADE's from all over the world. It was a whirlwind week with some of the most enthusiastic and amazing educators you are ever likely to meet. I came away with lots of ideas. ADE's are also constantly creating resources and sharing ideas that they have tried. Apple are opening up iTunesU for a lot of these and are very anxious that ADE's start sharing even further. The book I am working on came about as a result of a (very) late night discussion on pre‐service teachers. We all felt that if we could encourage the next batch of teachers to try these things then we could have a snowball effect and encourage even more to give things a go. The book will hopefully be available on the iTunesU store before the end of the year. it will have examples of best practice from a variety of different areas. Best of all to non ADE's is that all of the resources will be available for free to anyone who is interested. You would also be part of a network where you can post questions (similar really to this) and get ideas from other ADE's. I won't lie to you though. It is hard to get in and you would need to show examples of how you have been innovative in your classroom. But we are definitely trying to get more Irish people on board. Its opened a lot of doors for me though and given me a great platform to share what I have been doing. I would otherwise have been simply sharing with teachers I knew. I guess one of the reasons I was asked to do this was as a result of being an ADE. I gave a presentation tonight to about 35 teachers and I think most went away with a head full of ideas. This was the main reason I wanted to get involved. I am always trying to get teachers to talk to each other about what has and hasn't worked for them. We are all in it for the kids and there are some amazing teachers out there doing incredible things. I think it is about €40 but its used by the American military in Afghanistan and while a primary school classroom can be as scary a place I'd say they should suffice. :) As for the Apple TV i definitely think its the way to go. It gives you the freedom to teach from anywhere in the room and not be tied to a desk which is the real advantage of the iPad. You can get an adaptor that plugs directly into the whiteboard but it does mean you can't move around as much. Many of the older projectors are VGA though so you might need to look into getting an adapter. Again this is adding to the cost but in the long term it is far more suitable. If you are only now looking into projectors find one with a HDMI port. Its the way things are going. On that though I recently spoke to a school where they are dispensing with Interactive Whiteboards. This school has 30 projectors and their worry is that once the bulbs start failing they are going to be left with a huge bill. They are looking at getting 72" HD TV's instead of Interactive Whiteboards. The life expectancy is far greater and there are no bulbs to be replaced. The screen size is suitable for any classroom. The only downside is that it wouldn't be interactive from the TV but I guess in this case its the iPad that is interactive and as it can be used from anywhere in the room it means you don't really lose anything. I have just moved to a new school where we are only embarking on an ICT route and I definitely think this is well worth looking at. In fact when you consider the cost of an Interactive Whiteboard the cost of a TV plus Apple TV plus a few iPads would probably still be cheaper than installing a Whiteboard. Of course this will frighten a lot of people because so much has been spent on Interactive Whiteboards but in many cases the ongoing costs of keeping them running might get people thinking ‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐ You have two choices really depending on your projector. If it has a HDMI port then you should be able to use Apple TV directly and move about wherever you want. If it has a VGA port then you would need to get an adaptor which I think costs about €70. I know it adds extra expense but it does free you up a lot more. I am currently using an adaptor that I simply plug into the iPad and from there to the whiteboard but it does mean I am tied to the desk. I also have to plug in the audio cable to get the sound to play through the speakers in the classroom. Many of the new projectors have HDMI (which is where everything appears to be heading) so check this out first. The handy thing with the adaptor and Apple TV is it also sends the audio wirelessly. I use Stream Solutions in Cork but any of the Apple resellers should be able to provide you with these. I'm not 100% sure of the exact amount but I think that up to 20 iPads can be synced to one account. After that a volume licensing fee will apply where you pay a smaller amount per device. But the initial 20 (approx) are just the one payment. The best route is to set up a school account so that all apps are purchased through this account. This saves you the bother of a teacher leaving the school and taking all the apps they may have purchased with them when they leave. The iPads can be synced by plugging them in directly but you can also sync them so that any new apps are uploaded to the iPads once they are connected to a WiFi connection. This depends on your internet speed though as it can be quite time consuming. Keep an eye on the file sizes of the apps you download as some are very large. Smaller ones will download very 13 easily. In the long term if you are looking at buying a larger number of iPads its worth investing in a syncing cart. These store the iPads, charge them and sync them easily. Just go to the section on photos and turn off the sync option there. Also make sure that the photo stream option is turned off. That way you can create a Comic Book in the same way you would create a digital book that will have all the fancy page turning effects. I played around with that a little lately and also added a narration to each of the images so that a child could also record themselves reading the comic. The finished comic looked really great. Having started working with younger children over the past few weeks It's been quite an eye opener to me that I have had to assist some of the children with some of the controls they need to learn (pinching to zoom etc.) I have also been using some games with the children to help those with poor motor control. The new Google Chromebook does look promising (especially at its current price) but I still love the freedom the iPad has given me and the kids. It's a big scary and exciting world out there at the moment. I've really enjoyed all the articles in the papers over the past few days about the dying art form of writing letters and reading "proper books". They seem to roll these articles out every Christmas. Instead of worrying about what we are losing we should be looking at what we are gaining. The ability to give children who find writing difficult a chance to shine and to show off what they are capable of. I haven't used them myself but I'll check around and see if there is some way to connect them. I used a Smartboard in my last school and recently the software was made available as an App meaning I can now create resources directly on the iPad. It doesn't feature the full software but is handy for creating basic presentations. However I would say that being able to connect them to a whiteboard is only one aspect. Its been a real highlight of the past few years. I'm in a new school now and cannot wait to introduce them to film making. Like I said the iPad is ok for editing for classroom purposes. While the children were incredibly careful with it, looking back I was very foolish. The chance to integrate across subjects is always possible. I would say it would also be possible to create a comic on say a Science experiment that was conducted in class. Instead of having illustrations they could create a comic using photographs of the various stages but then present it as a comic. I am sure they were very proud of it and won't forget the details of the story of the Titanic for a long time, if ever. I have seen a youngster, an elective mute child, who suddenly began to talk through the 'crazy face' app using it as an intermediary to another person.Gasp! I said. But be careful, the children ‐‐‐‐‐‐‐ flags up need the simplest of communication apps to begin with ~ so they realise that they are the one in control, they have power at last. They can get rid of an interfering adult with one swipe, a great incentive for cause and effect learning or contingency awareness if you want to be posh! Below are the simplest most powerful communication apps I use with a little description, all free at last check on iTunes. Shut up! This yells out when the big green button is swiped, it cannot be missed as there is only one button on the screen.. At last a chance to tell meddling adults where to go in a polite way! Answers free lite This has two large buttons red and green . A swipe at the one you want to say produces a voice'yes' or 'no'. Go into settings and you can change the voice to male or female( nothing is worse than hearing a little boy with a speech switch that uses a female voice for him... aaaagh! or the reverse for a girl!) use text, pictures etc The full version is well worth buying. Say hi! A simple 'yes' and 'no' with red no and green yes witten in words. I researched and found I needed to defragment, which sounded awful , but it worked! The programme I used was free and it did a disk inventory of everything on my computer in a wonderful colour pattern to show dupicate files. It also showed that music( iTunes especially) dominated my memory. So I was able to delete many things and `i now have a reasonable memory. I use a programme called 'disk inventory X' and check on a regular basics. I find animatch and pictofun are perfect for the early days in Junior infants while sand and draw stars are great for the learning to write stage. My infants love read me stories with loads of activities to choose from here too. With older classes I have used chicktionary and textropolis for literacy and spelling and rorys story cubes for oral language. Geared is great for spacial awareness. I have just started using Macs in the classroom but I’m a bit lost as to what can be done on them. Any suggestions? Would anyone have simple step by step instructions on how to use imovie? I was exploring weather with my class this month and I created a playlist of the weather related songs/music pieces that I was using for this theme. So rather than searching for cds and tracks when I wanted to play the music everything was together in one place. I work in an autism unit with six children with varying degrees of need.Some of the children have already access to ipads at home, but as far as I can see they regard them purely as items of entertainment or stimulation (which I'm not saying is necessarily bad in itself), however, I would like to try to move to a more learning type focus. I see ‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐ ‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐ earlier posted suggested apps and also spoke of indiscriminate use in the classroom. I would like especially to work with the two children who are non‐verbal to give them the opportunity of communicating more effectively. I have heard of the 'Grace' application and 'Touch to Talk' (?) but would like some sort of basic training at least before proceeding further. Any comments/suggestions welcome. I have a management query. We have six new ipads and a store and sync case. I have set up our itunes account and am ready to download apps. The plan is that the ipads would go to six classes everyday and then back to store and sync. Anyhoo... I have a general question that has been gradually becoming a bigger problem... My issue is space, I have a MacBook Pro late 2009 with 2GB ram and about 10GB free hard drive space... 1.27GHZ and so on, it has a full health check ran during summer and it was given a clean bill of health... I have upgraded to Leopard to Mountain Lion and iPhoto '09 to '11. I also downloaded the full instrumental suite for garageband recently to create music for Nativity play... Since all these upgrades and updates computer is soooo slow, spinning color wheel and even the blue system icon popping up regularly. I intend to install 2x2GB ram from Crucial but I am not sure if this will solve the problem hugely... The cloud storage and photo stream and various operations running now in background are eating into my computers functionality... I don't want to give up these nifty features but am spending far too much time looking at these wheels lately... I would prefer not to have to purchase a new MacBook or iMac just yet... I have 25GB of Cloudstorage and Time Machine... I would love some advice on this matter, the more I use technology in my class the 18 Par DT ‐ R P DT ‐ NR greater volume of movies, photos and books I am having declutter from devices and Notebook itself...

Our whiteboard system is bee am and therefore does not appear conducive to the technology. It appears then that we will be depending on units. I also like these two and use them both for school and professionally... They enable us to graphically design, create and publish media for website, twitter or just within school... 1. Photo Collage: I know everyone is into Instagram and instacollage and I have been making collages for AGES using iPhoto or Picasa but this is my fave... I use my own photo backgrounds and really the sky is the limit... So then I noticed that they have these 'stickers' and you can insert stars hearts etc into the picture and these are transparent to the edge of the image.., I know very little about these things but in my limited experience with Movie Making and Hyperstudio (don't ask!) in college I knew that these were different file types and only to be created by people with special software... Until I found... 2. Eraser: there is one for iPhone (which I prefer) and one for iPad... Ur better with a stylus for this too... iPhone version can feather around the image so it is not so obvious that it was edited by hand. The best transparent gif was school crest... As far a I remember color splash is the one I used for my profile picture here on edmodo... you've got to show you support for your local GAA team! Photo toaster is also good, only ever used these for mass booklets, important school photos and had some fun with colour filters last Halloween making pupils into Frankenstein etc... Photofunia also very good, but some content not suitable so I would keep just for grown ups... Nothing too sinister but Resident Evil and a bit too much skin... You could use it yourself to create content for your school... Eg. Newspaper headline if you won a competition... I sent one to a friend once and she thought it was a real newspaper headline... She was mortified after when she looked at it properly!! I like moving Tales 'The Night Before Christmas' another one by one Hundred Robots, and Padworx' Christmas Carol, the nutcracker by Mouse Kin Media is also nice... It depends on the age group I am just listing out animated sorry book apps, Puppet Pals is very good any ony as limited as users animations... U can import your own iPhoto pics backgrounds and cut out pictures similar to transparent gifs and use them as characters... Download the lite version and try it, I really like it as you can make an original piece. I haven't used an ipad in class but I have used a Flip Mino to video the children speaking in Irish and doing some simple dramas. They really enjoy it and rise to the occasion!! I have also used it for the Fís project. The children wrote their own story, auditioned, acted it out and also filmed it. It was a great learning experience for all. The editing was the difficult part! He has used it a lot in Geography and has found it very beneficial. Apple technology is so intuitive and automatic syncing but with all the volumes of data comes a range of other issues... My bro said that the computer like mine should always have at least 15GB free at any given time... So hard if u want your own pics and music on it and then school music and pics too... I like when playlists and albums are synced with MacBook for using ipad... Spent a long time looking at new iMacs online after that...
