Katherine Alvarenga

Springdale, AR
Katherine is interested in information systems, web design, and
programming. She is an intern for Tyson Foods in the
Information Systems department. She is a devoted high school
band member. Katherine has been influenced most in
computing by her mentor Mrs. Kathleen Johnson.

Monticello, AR
Raya is interested in computer programming and enjoys
th
producing videos. As a 9 grader, Raya produced a “Bus
Safety Video” teaching kids in the Monticello School District
the importance of bus safety using MAC software. She is
captain of the Pom Squad. Raya’s East Lab teacher, Mrs.
Keturah West has been her computing influence.
Maggie Hardy

Siloam Springs, AR
Maggie’s passion is for computer graphics and sound related
technologies. During her junior year, she competed in the
FBLA Desktop Publishing event; placing second at district and
third at state. She also enjoys working at a local ropes course
challenging others in team building exercises. Maggie
indicates her teacher Mrs. Lisa Hotsenpillar is the one that
persuaded her to further her interests in computing.

Autumn Rouse
Bryant High School
Class of 2012
Bryant, AR
Autumn is most interested in the design of computer hardware.
She is certified in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint 2007. She
designs and races her own robot design and won first place in
CO2 races with a very unique car design. When Autumn isn’t
designing cars, she enjoys musical theatre.
Morhea Sorgnard
Broken Arrow High School

Broken Arrow, OK
Morhea became interested in computers and technology at the
age of 6. She is working towards setting her career in
Electrical Engineering and possibly later going into designing
medical devices. Morhea also enjoys photography. During
her junior year, she founded the Photography Club at her high
school.
Amanda Wadley
Bentonville High School

Bentonville, AR
Amanda’s career plans after high school is in computer
systems analysis and wants to continue her knowledge in
computer programming. At the end of her junior year, she
scored a 5 on the AP Computer Science test. Amanda credits
her father for influencing her interest in computing. She also
enjoys following tiny creatures around in her backyard to get a
perfect macro picture.

Class of 2011
Springdale, AR
Macy is most interested in database management and web
design. She is an intern for Tyson Foods working in the
Information Systems department. Macy has been influenced in
computing by her teacher Kathy Johnson and her boss at
Tyson Foods Nancy Matthews. She loves to travel and try new
things.
Christy Munson
Ridgway Christian School

Pine Bluff, AR
Christy’s career plan after high school is in computer science
and is most interested in programming. She won first place in
the Computer Science category and second place overall at
the Southeast Arkansas Regional Science Fair, which allowed
her to compete in the International Science and Engineering
Fair. She also works as a teacher’s aide and tutors students in
mathematics. Christy credits her mother for influencing her
most in computing.
Christy was unable to attend the ceremony tonight because she is competing in the Regional
Science Fair. Good luck from all of us!

Kathleen Johnson
Springdale High School
Over the last 25 years, Kathleen has seen all facets of the
technology field from being a programmer, to teaching at a
vocational school, a junior high, and finally settling in at
Springdale High School. Kathleen teaches the CA I, II and III
courses, Advanced Database, Advanced Spreadsheet, Web
Technologies and occasionally Alice (Intro to Obj. Oriented Programming).
Kathleen was an integral part of the start of the Mastery Computer Applications curriculum
(piloted in 1999) which started at Springdale High School and is now an accepted alternative
curriculum for the Arkansas Department of Career Education. This curriculum consists of two to
three core classes in which students learn Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Internet
Researching and E-Mail. Students must master each unit with 80% before they can move on to
the next topic. Many Arkansas schools have switched to this new curriculum. Each summer,
Kathleen teaches the Computer Applications In-Service which is required to teach the CA
curriculum.
In 2009, Kathleen was one of the team of teachers who pioneered the Information Technology
(IT) Academy at Springdale High School. The IT Academy has seven majors: Information
Support and Services, Programming/Software Engineering, Web Site Programming & Design, IT
Accounting, IT Management, E-Commerce, and Graphic Arts. Benefits of the academy include:
individualized student mentoring .field trips, guest speakers, opportunities for community service,
monthly meetings, contacts with local technical (NTI), community colleges (NWACC) and the
University of Arkansas (Walton College of Business) in Fayetteville. Our Advisory Board includes
IT professionals from some of the local Fortune 500 companies--Wal-Mart, Tyson, and J.B. Hunt,
faculty and chairs from the above institutions, and other local business professionals.
Presently, this program is still in pilot, but many of the courses have already been adopted by the
State of Arkansas. This year, Kathleen worked to design the Web Technologies and Adv. DB
Frameworks and test banks and served on a committee to re-write the Computer I, II and III
Applications Frameworks and test banks.
Kathleen Is excited to work with the tremendous team of teachers at Springdale High and the
Arkansas Department of Career Education to make these changes. Already many of these
changes have helped to expand the IT Academy at SHS to 200+ students and increase the
enrollment of females in our technology courses.

Affiliate Award Celebration
NCWIT is the National Center for Women & Information Technology, a
coalition of over 200 prominent corporations, academic institutions,
government agencies, and non-profits working to increase women's
participation in information technology (IT). We believe that inspiring more
women to choose careers in IT isn't about parity; it's a compelling issue of
innovation, competitiveness, and workforce sustainability. In a global
economy, gender diversity in IT means a larger and more competitive
workforce; in a world dependent on innovation, it means the ability to design technology that is as
broad and creative as the people it serves.
The NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing honors young women at the
high-school level for their computing-related achievements and interests.
Awardees are selected for their computing and IT aptitude, leadership ability,
academic history, and plans for post-secondary education. The NCWIT
Award for Aspirations in Computing offers both a national and local affiliate
competitions to generate support and visibility for women's participation in
