MECHANISED & AUTOMATED SAMPLE
PREPARATION SYSTEMS
SMART GEO-PREP
When using Smart Geo-Prep the operator chooses an
optimum weight for the split that will be produced. For
example, when using a ring or puck mill, there is an optimum
amount for pulverising, not too high a weight so the sample
is pulverised fully, not too small a weight so the pulverised
sample is representative of the original material.
The operator weighs each sample (this can be recorded in a
LIM System) and loads it into the Boyd Crusher. The sample
material falls into a small belt conveyor that takes it to the
RSD.
The speed of the belt is controlled by a PLC so that small
samples travel slowly, to ensure a high quality split through the
RSD. The RSD is controlled by the PLC to provide the pre-set
weigh plus the remainder.
MECHANISED SYSTEM
A Mechanised System is a combination of two or more
machines and devices so that a process of sample preparation
can be carried out without any operator action.
§
Two or more machines combined to form a mechanised
system for the preparation of the samples.
§
Operator handling is minimized, even for very large
samples.
§
Ideal for labs or mills processing up to 350 samples per
day.
AUTOMATED SYSTEM
Automated Systems are based on the concept of a sample
flowing through a process, not a series of batch events. The
concept has been developed over the last fifteen years. Many
new machines and devices have been invented by ROCKLABS
Ltd to facilitate this concept.
The overall aim is simplicity of design and construction to
minimise construction costs and running costs and enable the
system to be operated by existing laboratory technicians and
maintained by existing plant fitters.

MATERIALS
The analytical laboratory is a vital part of all industrial plants and research establishments. The
techniques employed therein have developed rapidly in recent years, but the fundamentals upon
which many of these techniques are based have remained constant. The majority demand the use of
high-purity inert materials. In this category platinum (Pt) has properties that make it an ideal choice. It
has a high degree of chemical inertness and yet can be readily fabricated into a wide variety of
articles. These, in turn, are used in a wide range of applications:
Wet Chemistry:
Eg. ISO 9502:1993
Metallurgical-grade fluorspar - Determination of silica content - Reduced-molybdosilicate
spectrometric method.
Loss related analyses:
Eg. AS 3572.3-2002
Plastics - Glass filament reinforced plastics (GRP) - Methods of test Determination of loss on ignition of glass filament reinforced plastics.
Lithium borate fusions for XRF, AAS, ICP-AES or ICP-MS analysis:
Eg. ISO 9516:1992
Iron ores - Determination of silicon, calcium, manganese, aluminium, titanium, magnesium,
phosphorus, sulphur and potassium - Wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometric
method.
Metals used for laboratory apparatus must have the following
properties:
§
§
§
§
§
High temperature strength
High melting point
Ductility
Corrosion resistance
Oxidation resistance
Platinum and its alloys possess these qualities and is therefore the
most widely used metal for analytical laboratory apparatus.

Metals properties
The carousels are made of refractory stainless steel alloy. The carousels do not bend nor warp under
temperature stress, metal is unbreakeable unlike ceramics. Ceramics charges with static electricity
and may produce unstable balance readings. Metals do not charge with static electricity. Our TGA
carousel design have transversal cuttings to absorb expansion and contraction. No deformation,
unbreakeable, durable.
Standardized components
TGA Instruments contain complete brand name balances and temperature controllers from recognized
manufacturers. The balance has display for easy service. The temperature controller has 2 displays: 1
for the set point and other for the present temperature. The balance as well as the temperature
controller are programmable using the buttons in the devices. These devices are manufactured by the
experts in the business. All the electric and pneumatic parts in the TGA can be acquired in the market:
Magnetic switches, relays, pneumatic valves, pistons, fans etc… With no dependency on Navas
Instruments.
All the sensors are magnetic not affected by dust. Very few propietary electronics (Only 2 boards), that fits
inside 2 slots of the PC. Access FOR SERVICE from back, sides, front and underneath.
