In den meisten Geschichten über den Turm
von Babel wird die Sprachverwirrung als
Strafe angesehen.
Verwirrung, Fremdheit, Anderssein nennt,
vergangenen Jahren schon viel zustande
In most stories about the Tower of Babel, the
confusion of tongues is viewed as a punishment. Arrogant man builds a giant tower up
into the heavens and the higher the builders
climb, suddenly the less they understand of
the voices surrounding them and that manage to reach them from the depths.
Perhaps we can also read the story in a
completely different way: the builders only
came to these heights with their tower, into
these zones of light and splendour because
they were not building according to the
customary patterns and procedures. What
we call a confusion of tongues may have
been nothing other than a special form of
language of exchange between the builders, a language that was not geared to
immediate clarity, but to being different,
being new, to the penetration of ideas that
were not to be understood with conventional patterns. Because these builders in
Babel perhaps were actually artists, people with different ideas and different ways of
expressing these ideas, because that which
we call confusion, foreignness, being different has been a part of the realm of art from
the very beginning, the Babylonian confusion of tongues still appears threatening to
some.
It amazes and pleases us all the more when
symposia like the European Artist Symposium boldly highlight something in common
that comes from heterogeneity. No one
must conform to an idea, no uniform or binding aesthetic is demanded. A meeting of
“Babylonian builders”, who have managed
to pull off a great deal in past years.
so that confusion is to be desired, that of art
in which what is clear is foggy and what is
new only very slowly disseminates its translations.
TEN YEARS E UROPEAN A RTISTS

Zehn Jahre European Artists e.V.
Ten Years of European Artists e.V.
Was bedeuten schon zehn Jahre in der Welt
What are ten years when it comes to the
world of art? I still hear the words of my
teacher Robert Hammerstiel: Art has to mature, to grow up and be inspired by the personality of the artist. It will require ten years
of hard work in order to reach an approximation of the universe of one’s own self in
art.
Ten years of maturing, of cultural exchange,
of cooperation with other countries and cultural circles, of fostering art and the creators
of art, life in community as a basis for new
projects and ideas that left behind formative traces and led us to new horizons. This
decade of joint effort has taught us that the
creation of art unites us in a peaceful coexistence across all borders. It contributed
to the fostering of the social competence of
artists with whose help a children’s hospital
was built in Kenya. We organised numerous
exhibitions, symposia and workshops where
the visitors were involved in the synergetic
power of art and of those creating art. All
this is the fruit of a ten-year collaboration
that has moulded and changed us and has
brought us a step closer to our ideals.
My thanks go out to all indefatigable artists
and patrons in our organisation who together with me are looking forward to the
years of artistic creation that lie before us.

A Little Piece of Home
Every time they meet, they come from all over
the world: artists who are creative in different
fields. For some time they live and work side
by side, they discuss, learn from each other's
experiences, get to know and come to appreciate each other.
I am talking about the European Artists association symposium which takes place in Essen
annually and also in many other places around
the world on a more irregular basis. Here, creative people are united; they are encouraged
and inspired to discuss and to work together.
entstehender Kunst an soziale Projekte abgeben.
These meetings realise the basic idea of the
European Artists association: to bring together
people in artistic fields, to exchange experiences, knowledge and possibilities.
In view of the increasing globalisation, our cultural and social responsibility in the world grows
just the same. The people from the European
Artists association take this into account by mediating between people and cultures, apart
from that they support social projects from the
sales of art originating in this context.
Thus a huge network has developed in the
course of the ten-year-old existence of European Artists. It connects artists from all over the
world, ties together their activities and public
relations, offers them a platform and with it a
possibility to be perceived beyond their familiar surroundings.
Beside exhibitions and projects all over the world
the symposia are a central meeting place of
the people from European Artists which offer
them the opportunity for exchange and creative cooperation. Everybody who took part in
one of the symposia once is very likely keen on
becoming a repeat participant.
The advantages of such a project are obvious: For some time the artists can escape from
their everyday life with its obligations, they can
be themselves and work concentrated and
creatively, they can develop themselves

Inhalte in neue Formen gekleidet.

on their way and at the same time they get
to know other artists and their ways and have
the opportunity to observe or even strike new
paths.
As a result, the single artists make not only big
steps forward regarding their creativity, but
they also undergo a development in their
creative width. They take up and process suggestions, question their own habits and put
contents into new forms.
Indeed, art develops quite differently at different places in the world. Art is depending on
traditions and the role which it plays within these traditions. Art is depending on cultural taste,
on the materials available, on the colours and
shapes of the surroundings.
A walk through the exhibition which shows the
creative results at the end of each symposium can be compared with a trip around the
world.
And yet there are always relations between
single works and sometimes you can see freshly
developed parallels. The works of the different
artists create a connection with each other,
they keep contact.
Indeed, for many artists the European Artists
symposium is like a little piece of home, like
homecoming. Seldom people of the same nationality meet. In fact, an international group
of creatively working individuals forms for a set
time. By interacting they reflect the world – as
a contrast to each other, as related with each
other; they flow into one another.
Each of them gives a piece of their home and
their native country to the European Artists Association and just as much they can find themselves there – and even more.

The Woman, in all of her guises, is the heroine of my work. My philosophy is that art is
a pleasure that deserves to be lived, and
is also an endless pyramid of experimentation. I love the feeling of excitement when
I reveal a new print from its printing block,
my soul becomes colored when my symbols
swim in the rivers of paint on a canvas. My
best works were produced during my time
at the European Artists Symposium in Essen,
because of the beautiful artistic atmosphere
that it provides, and because of the good
friendships I have made with other artists there
whom I have learned so much from.
Thuraya Al-Baqsami is a prominent Kuwaiti
artist and writer who has been active since
the 1960s. She studied fine arts in Cairo and
Moscow until 1981, where she received her
Master's degree from the Surikov Institute.
She has held 60 solo exhibitions and participated in over 250 collective exhibitions
world-wide. Her works are in the collections
of the British Museum, UNESCO, Museum of
Human Rights Geneva, among others. Thuraya is also an established writer of short stories and poetry, and has received several
awards for her books and literary activities.

Art is a global language without any misunderstandings.
Art is an ideal means for interpersonal communication, pushes prejudices aside, opens
hearts and eyes for love, for reflection.
Without Art the world would be horrible,
without taste and boring.
Art is the real infinite freedom of thinking and
acting. Freedom without Art is preposterous.

Be it a visual art or curatorial assignment, writing books, articles, film, play or poetry, my
work hinges on the butterfly-effect: if a butterfly flaps its wings in Peking, it may trigger
a tornado in Pennsylvania. Changing one
small thing may change everything. And
not just in meteorology or chaos theory. The
shape of the butterfly resembles the shape
of the brain: an image, an installation, a
piece of creative work, an engaged gaze
or even a supposedly absent-minded sideglance – each a potential flap of a butterfly.
A change in the making.

Work description: Irregular semicircles of Washi paper (variable numbers and dimensions)
which internal structures are made of bamboo or wood. They must be hanging with nylon strings inside a cover and at a protected

Artist´s statement
Short CV
Through the story of her life Sabine Beuter
was able to collect manifold impressions
and experiences from various culture areas.
She mirrors them in an expressive but also
subtle form in her works.
In her oeuvre the artist deals through an intuitive process with the artistic and with her
own inner dynamics. Therein lies a rich ambiguity of visual perceptions, scriptural elements, signs, thoughts, memories and feelings.

could be.

Artist´s statement
Short CV
Creative principles of abstract painting and
of programme analysis characterise the
work of this Slovak artist, Boho. His composition utilises subtle borders of colour
fields (night and morning meditation), combined with horizontal and diagonal division.
Colour is the bearer of energy. Free flowing
paint is poured down colours and mixed
media. Since 1995 Boho has used basic numerology calligraphy. The square, circle
and triangle symbolise spirituality and numerology, well known to ancient cultures.

Artist´s statement
Short CV
As a multi-disciplined, self-taught conceptual artist, my work is mostly social commentary or politically motivated, whether working
in paint, installation/multimedia, or printmaking.
My aesthetic is clean-lined, refined, organized and precise. Unlike the rest of the work,
my paintings are more traditional studio
works, done in a time of meditation or selfreflection. I use simple geometric shapes,
painted in a cool, saturated palette. A white
field is used as negative space to form the
compositions, in which I reach for harmony
and serenity.

He takes part in numerous national and international exhibitions since the 1970s. Many
of his works are in possession of renowned

With different materials and techniques he
always works in layers which he stacks one
on the other. So it is a matter of course that
this art is not an elusive, off handed one. It
is sophisticated, construed and elaborately
composed. The means he uses - photography and text - normally guarantee clear
statements. Towards cursory views, though,
they raise more questions than they answer.

My work articulates the storytelling potential of art to produce the magical and transcendental in human experience. Both in
my masters and doctoral research I dealt
with fairy tales as paradigms of narratives in
Western society. In my performance work,
I created the concept of "the fairy tale of
every life", using workshops with different audiences to recollect the fantastic aspects of
one´s lives. I also draw, publish poetry and
illustrate stories and children´s books in the
same purpose. My current work, "Domestic
Fantasies" is a visual diary of singular aspects
of love and eroticism.
I studied architecture at Universidade Mackenzie and journalism at the School of
Communication and Arts, Universidade de
São Paulo. I also worked as a dancer, and
got a scholarship to dance and teach at
Peter Goss school in Paris, in 1984. From 1986
to 1993, I lived in New York, where I got my
Master in Performance studies and PhD in
Arts at New York University. Back in São Paulo
since then, I work at the Museum of Contemporary Art as a curator and art professor. As
an artist I have been participated in many
exhibitions, particularly researching fairy tales
as theme.

(...) Intuition, as a subconscious mind process
appearing in a form of a flash enabling to
notice an idea, a solution of a problem, an
answer for a tormenting question, is a value
that in my opinion makes art differ from any
other human activity. Adjusting quickly a given situation, or a problem to the patterns
and dependencies already known, as well
as the total lack of control, assumes but an
acceptance or rejection of a given solution. Comparing to logical thinking, intuition is
with no doubt a creative process occuring
on the highest level of abstraction (...) from

My Art is in continuous development, it is coherent with the changes in my life.
I work on specific "series". Each serie represents a specific time of my life.
Sometimes it is introspective: it digs inside, it
lacerates and it brings out into the work the
condition of my soul (X-Rays, Reminiscences,
Around and Inside Me, Atavistic series).
Sometimes it appears like a look around
myself, made of objects found and filed (Da

opposite to the natural world, one of its details was enacted as a simulacrum or as a
symbol (the aristotelian theory of mimesis
and the ‘simulacre’ of Baudrillard).
He took part in many art projects and land
art installations, in more than 100 group
shows all over the world, and he has had 12
solo exhibitions.
Among others at 2010 he took part in the
25th Alexandria Biennale, at 2011 in 15th Lulea - Sweden Biennale and in the 1st Sofia
Paper Biennale.
In 2013 the Archeological Museum of Thessaloniki presents a solo exhibition of him with

I am a professional artist and educator who
specialises in ceramic arts, painting and design. The primary goal of my arts practice is
to explore the various definitions and experiences we have of objects, whether they
be art objects, ordinary household items
or mementoes. My current research interests are inspired by my experiences living
and teaching art in China for the last three
years. The focus of my work is on how our belongings and homes shape, and conversely,
are shaped by our own personal and cultural identities.

My work is a series of investigations into formal contrasts and arguments. The idea of
fluidity and containment is consistently present and I am driven to create a feeling of
controlled chaos, tending towards dividing
my work into distinct play-zones. Knots, tubes,
folds and stacks are my transformations of
choice: experimenting with the tension,
stress and gravity of each object.
Thematically, the embrace of and pleasure
in materials and a strong sense of playfulness, humor and hilarity are key.

The traces that Petra Höcker is constantly
searching for among her surroundings, finding and recording in her artistic work, are
the traces of life.
She references them in her work and there
they continue to exist – not only in the sense of having been documented, but as a
symbol that is capable of development and
that has already undergone development
from the moment it was fixed on paper or
canvas. And she doesn’t stop there either:
the notes made are painted over and hidden, submerged beneath to some extent
sculptural, built-up layers of paint, they are
then re-exposed, accompanied by drawn
or painted commentaries, or listed like a succession of events emerging from the depths.

Known as a representative personality in the
contemporary art, not only in Romania, also
in the world, Corneliu Ionescu is part of the
great family of geometrical abstraction; his

Over her long engagement in art, through
various media, most often through painting,
drawing and graphics, she has created several cycles with nature as the main topic
and motif.
The latest two cycles are dealing with water
as a topic which she treats aesthetically and
artfully in a socially engaged way, expanding the boundaries of creative media.
Water as an elixir in the Te@rt cycle, is an art
which heals and improves the quality of life.
The topic of water is "decantered" again in
her latest concept Vodo_staj (water-level)
in which she presents the life of rivers, inclement weather, foods contemplating on
ecological awareness, the pollution of nature and its preservation.

Short CV
Dealing with symbols and traces as well as
their forces and movements has been my
central artistic topic for several years. I am
interested in the specific dynamics of the
different self-developed character shapes
and symbols, that is the impression of movement and thus of space (of time) that is conveyed. The dark shapes against the bright
background developing in my works often
seem to mean definite objects, but they
actually do not. They simply stand for themselves. The shape exists independently, the
work of art does not reproduce – it creates its
own reality. However, a moment of irritation
on the part of the observer is intended when
a symbol that has been set vehemently and
specifically apparently reminds confidently
of events and raises questions relating to a
supposedly known meaning.

I use for my inception the symbol of the Roman goddess Venus, which is used to indicate the female sex, as the constellation Libra,
which is associated with the element air and
is traditionally ruled by the same goddess
Venus. The round shapes of the signs can
also be recognized in the triangles and arrows as symbols of strength and willpower.
Behold the female and male, two polarities
that we also may recognize in birth-rebirth,
growth-arrest, open and closed forms, passive and active energy, sensuality-spirituality.

shows in her work the deep admiration and
feelings of consanguinity with extinct cultures, nature and things that have been. From
this consanguinity a lot of her work comes

I use the concept of Chance in art. Chance
working on humans in creative fields requires
a crisis of spirit, a search for a different path
in life and a thirst for the Infinite. A spirit that
is unsatisfied with routines, selfsameness, and
the familiar desires something from beyond.
In my art the challenges emanating from
my life’s search lead me to a non-systemic
chance. I take a chance in my art to be part
of a higher scheme that guides me in creating. I call the philosophy of my art 'Chancon' - Chance and Consciousness

Langenbach creates with his intuitive, own
blending of drawing, text, painting, photography, and collages the cover, the frame,
the indication for the viewer`s significant
perceptions. His interventions are paradoxical, a concentrated disclosure of trivialities,

Having worked for so long in a studio environment, and been responsible for ensuring all the various production departments
were properly financed and their products
produced on-schedule and within budget,
it is now a pleasure to get behind the camera and to shoot and edit videos which get
broadly promoted and used. In my current
work, we are expanding into live production
and streaming, which is even more demanding but more fun. I've taken great delight
in producing videos for the European Artists
and hope to produce more with them. I'm
seeking new publics and outlets for my video
productions.
22 year veteran of film/video/stills studio work
in Hollywood and California, covering areas
of pre-production, post production and live
studio production in a large film production complex. Experienced in film budget
management, location scouting/management, logistics and film/video export and

Aghim Muka
born 1965 in Fier,

Milan, Italy
Artist´s statement
Short CV
Muka is a versatile artistic figure and not easy
to classify. His self-expression is not limited to
painting alone. The media of his artistic research ranges from installations to video,
sculpture and performance.
He breaks with the traditional norms. Never
repetitive, each work expresses his poetic
art with an explosive force, whatever the
expressive means utilised, this being merely
functional to Muka‘s need to narrate which
he feels to be compelling, vital and categoric.
He studied Fine Art at the school of Art in Valona, Albania, where he taught afterwards
for some years.
Since 1995 he lives and works in Milan, Italy.
Being Albanian, he loves Albania and describes it with natural materials, cloth, silk,
cotton, sand, wood and acrylic. His latest
works see him making use of embroidery,
sculpture, sewing, cooking, burning, drawing
his inspiration from India, creating his work as
though it was a great universal puzzle to be
solved.

“My father was a painter therefore I chose
other mediums. It is funny, after a life dedicated to Fiber art, I began to paint on canvas
just before the symposium of 2006 because
there were three canvases waiting for me in
Essen… and since then I have not left my color palette and my brushes. Painting came
at the end of a long journey, almost a promised land.”

There is a need for artists the decontextualize the objects that used to be the status
symbols of the middle classes, or have been

Artist`s statement evolves in my dialogue
with creation:
To be outside in nature; to collect colours; to
perceive forms and structures; to be stunned
by singular beauty; to hold the instant. Back
in the atelier colours pour out like in trance
onto the canvas, fast and layer after layer.
Colour on colour. I watch the process of
painting, step back, let myself be led. The
picture announces the next steps, I obey.
Pictures emerge. Pictures beside which you
feel the closeness to creation.
Then I am back outside and let myself be seduced again.

Artist´s statement
Short CV
I have always been interested in the ability
of a ceramic vessel to point to something
beyond itself--to function as metaphor. Physically structured with necks, shoulders, bellies, and feet, ceramics vessels can evoke
the gesture and anthropomorphized stance
of the human body; they also reveal deep
aspects of human experience and the natural world.
Ellen Schön is Adjunct Faculty in Fine Arts and
Clay Studio Supervisor at the Art Institiute of
Boston at Lesley University, where she has
taught ceramics and 3-D courses since 2002.
Schön received a BA from Marlboro College
(Ceramics and Perceptual Psychology) and
an MFA in Ceramics from Boston University’s
Program in Artisanry. She has exhibited in
numerous shows in the United States and is
a past recipient of the Massachusetts Artist
Foundation Fellowship. Schön has organized
and co-curated interdisciplinary, thematic
group exhibitions in non-profit venues in the
Boston area and abroad.
My recent work explores the vessel form as a
wellspring or womb, with possibilities of both
fecundity and barrenness. Through spontaneous handling of inanimate clay, I attempt
to find and breathe life into form.

My work has its influence in both my Scottish and East European roots. It is a series of
fragments or “criomagan”, and icons, reflecting memories both visual and written.
With a family interest in the Gaelic oral tradition and the Gaelic written word, combined
with a direct visual reference to the power
and beauty of the isolated Scottish Highland
landscape, my work is an expressive interpretation of my surroundings. My visual language has developed into an interest in texture and combines printmaking techniques,
fabrics and the expressiveness of painting to
produce Scottish icons.

At first, I narrated the stories through the use
of symbols and codes so as to unite memories of my childhood, impressions of everyday
life, and even deeply personal and universal human emotions and experiences: love,
fear, dream, search for a personal path, insisting all the way through my work on only
one constant - to be completely honest with
myself.
In most cases my work is figurative. In the

Short CV
I am a visual artist who believes her field of
activity is a hybrid between a modality to
slightly defeat death and these adverbs of
time: yesterday, today and tomorrow...
In 2012, she starts her academic studies as
a DAAD scholarship holder, at HBK Braunschweig, Germany. She has had, since 2000,
23 solo exhibitions and 17 group exhibitions.
More than 400 of her artworks can be found
in public collections, as well as in the private collections of Her Majesty Elizabeth II of
Great Britain, His Imperial Majesty Akihito of
Japan, Her Majesty Sofia of Spain, Her Majesty Rania Al-Abdullah of Jordan, of several

“Synergy and Energetic”
In my photographs I represent the interaction of elements. Those through friction, wind
and sun produced energy, in addition to the
basic element of water, an existential condition for all human beings, animals and plants
on our planet.

My determination is to bring people together
and to mobilize them to activities, to release
positive energies. My photographs show people in synergy, collecting the warmth of the
sun, feeling the energy of wind and water
and to stay in contact with the earth - the
base for a new elemental encounter.

My artistic work is inspired by the postulates
of time and by the way the computer functions as it insatiably feeds on questions and
answers, and the vast amount of information
which we naively believe belongs to us.
He has had about fourty solo exibitions in various towns in the former Yugoslavia. He has
exibited his works worldwide, and has had
solo exibitions in Paris, London, Budapest,
Csongrad, Berlin etc..
I believe the role of art is to be a universal signpost, a warning and essential refreshment in dreary times. Without it the world
would be far poorer.

The landscape and man's mark upon it are
the subjects of my collages and paintings. I
often rework prints and paintings depicting
the landscape. I select existing compositions
for historical reasons and as acknowledgement of previous intellectual remarking on
the land. I also seek out cities to study buildings and networks of streets for clues to its
structure. Street views I select range between
eye level, the bird's eye view, and even the
satellite view. I also use maps and atlases to
guide my investigation. The images I create
imply the agency of man.
Tornai earned the bachelor of art at Lake
Forest College and the MA and PhD at Yale
University in the history of art, architecture
and material culture. She has been teaching
art history since 1995, and has participated
in curatorial projects both in academia and

interests are in American art and artists and
movements of former Soviet block countries. She writes for contemporary artists' catalogues and manages exhibition projects

Artist´s statement
Short CV
In my paintings I have usually tended to
avoid figurative themes, because I want to
express - on canvas, paper or re-cycled material - spiritual urges, using invented signs or
the spontaneous rythm of coloured marks
and lines. The writing element in my work, as
an expression of energy, is often indecipherable and enigmatic, it nevertheless appears
as a form of communication. - The land art
project takes inspiration from the age-old
traditions and symbolism of American preColumbian peoples - to reflect on the past,
on culture, and on respect for peoples,
nature and the balance of nature.
Monika Wolf lives and works in Milan, Italy.
Diploma "designer grad." Folkwang Hochschule, Essen. Study of Educational Art
Teaching at the University of Düsseldorf. The
current research focuses on the creation of
polycrome assemblages, using waste and
recycled materials. The paintings include the
assemblages as an integral part of the work.

sacred plants of the American Indians" at

GLOBALIZATION - CONNECTIONS - TIME
TIMEimages and TIMEprojects mirror the result, the fugaciousness of the moment. The
work consists of many detail screens that
are generated in a predetermined period
of time, either by me or the circumstances
(a visit to another place or including other
artists).
At the end of this period the detail screens
are newly combined to a complete work
thus giving a reflection of various aspects of
just this time of life. Afterwards no more work
is done on any painting.
The result is what it is neither repeatable nor
changeable.
