In a nutshell, we think Hotham has the best natural snow terrain in Australia... Looking for a challenge? Take your pick from the myriad of steep valley runs Hotham is renowned for, you know the sort that give your thighs a real work out. Intermediate runs you can ski all day, tree runs, natural halfpipes, gullies and bowls, it's all here. Want more? Go off piste with a FREE kat ride and discover Hotham's famous powder stashes or take the Heli-Link to Falls Creek and enjoy the slopes of our sister resort, all on the same lift pass... how's that for value? This manual has been designed to assist you in providing your guests with the ultimate Australian alpine experience. If you require any further information please do not hesitate to contact our experienced ticket team (available year round). Hotham Institutional Manual 2014 Page 2 For information, pricing and bookings contact Mount Hotham Skiing Company Ticket Office P: 03 5759 4436 F: 03 5759 3164 E: [email protected] W: www.hotham.com.au NEW IN 2014 Free Skiing from 1pm for all 5 day or greater tickets^ All guests who purchase a 5 day or greater lift pass can now ski for FREE from 1pm the day prior to the start date of their ticket. This offer does not apply to the ‘5 day any day’ pass. All guests who purchase a 1 through 4 day or greater lift pass can ski for FREE from 3pm the day prior to the start date of their ticket. This offer does not apply to the ‘5 day any day’ pass.^^ Flexible Ticketing! Guests who purchase lift tickets, group lessons, or kids Snowzone for 5 days or greater can take advantage of rest days in 2014. This means that if you purchase a 5 day pass you can use it for 5 days over a 7 day period. Remember lift tickets for 5 days or greater also include free access from 1pm the day prior to the ticket commencing. Flexible ticketing duration: 5 of 7 Days 6 of 8 Days 7 of 9 Days For Guests Ordering Rental: Flexible ticketing does not cover rental equipment or clothing, so you need to make sure the guest orders this appropriately. If the guest knows they are only skiing 5 days, then 5 days rental equipment will be sufficient, however if the guest intends to have a rest day/s this needs to be taken into account. See below for examples for a 5 day ticket: Skiing: Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, Day 4, Day 5 = 5 Days Rental Day 1, Rest, Day 2, Day 3, Day 4, Day 5 = 6 Days Rental Day 1, Day 2, Rest, Day 3, Day 4, Rest, Day 5 = 7 Days Rental SNOW PASS: MORE THAN JUST A TICKET Snow Pass… Your ticket to everything you need to enjoy one day, or many days, at the snow. The days of paper tickets are now in the past as the Snow Pass is YOUR pass to everything snow at Hotham and Falls Creek. By organising your lift, lesson & rentals prior to your arrival means you’ll spend less time in queues and more time on snow to maximise your Winter holiday enjoyment. Sounds easy? That’s because it is. Snow Pass is your ticket to your next snow holiday. GUEST INFORMATION WE REQUIRE & WHY WHEN BOOKING As we load your guests pre-booked lift, lessons and rentals onto our Snow Pass Cards, without all requested information on the ticket manifest, the Snow pass card is unable to be correctly linked to a guest’s profile. Each card is individually linked, each time a guest returns to Hotham or Falls Creek, we are able to use their specific information for their next visit – for example this means a guest who needs rental will have all of their details already recorded with us making the collection of equipment a much quicker process. A Guest with an existing Snow Pass Card who only wants tickets and or lessons will be able to bypass the ticket office and head straight to the lifts or lesson meeting place – we will need the customer ID or Pass Media code which are both located on the Snow Pass Card. Any orders sent without all required information will not be entered. IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR GROUPS – LOST SNOW PASS CARDS We strongly recommend the group organiser keep a spreadsheet of all Customer ID or Pass Media Codes and the student’s name each pass is allocated to. If a student loses their RFID pass there is a $3.00 replacement fee. If we do not know which card has been lost/allocated to which student you will need to purchase another pass (i.e. School Student 5 Day Lift & Lesson @ $313.00) at the full rate rather than just the $3.00 card replacement fee. Upfront payment is required. ^Any consecutive day ticket of 5 days or greater may be collected and used from 1pm the day prior. In the instance the product includes rental from Hotham Sports, equipment may also be collected from 1 pm the day prior. Please note that the afternoon use is for lifts only and that no lessons are included in the free half day. ^^Any 1 day through 4 day ticket or may be collected and used from 3pm the day prior. In the instance the product includes rental from Hotham Sports, equipment may also be collected from 3pm. Please note that the afternoon use is for lifts only and that no lessons are included in the free half day. **Please note that while all care has been taken in the preparation of this manual we do not accept responsibility for errors or omissions. If you decide to wait less than 48 hours prior to your 3pm check-in time to see if further lifts open, the credit or refund will be granted based on the number of lifts operational due to lack of snow on the day you request a refund. You may not cancel your holiday on the check-in date. The Snow Guarantee only applies if a lift cannot open due to lack of snow on the major trail it services. Whilst we strive to allocate the lesson times requested this is not always possible. Please contact Hotham Snowsports Centre on 03 5759 4452 or email [email protected] to confirm your numbers and lesson time one week prior to arrival. Our 1:30pm lesson is usually less busy so you can be assured of a better student/instructor ratio and more individualised attention at this time. The 1:30pm lesson also has a longer duration of 2 hours. Lesson packages include a group lesson each day for up to 5 days (i.e. 3 day rental & lesson package = 3 lessons, whilst a 6 day rental & lesson package includes 5 lessons). LESSON TIMES ARE ALLOCATED ON A FIRST COME FIRST SERVED BASIS – TO AVOID DISAPPOINTMENT, PLEASE COMPLETE & RETURN THE GROUP BOOKING FORM WITH YOUR PREFERRED LESSON TIMES. HELMET POLICY Mount Hotham Skiing Company (MHSC) in conjunction with the Australian Ski Areas Association ‘ASAA’ recommends the wearing of helmets for skiing and riding. Skiers and snowboarders are encouraged to educate themselves on the benefits and limitations of helmet usage while emphasising that skiing and snowboarding in a controlled and responsible manner at all times is the primary safety consideration for all skiers and boarders. In addition, MHSC require guests wear helmets while undertaking certain activities & programs within the resort. • All guest participants in what is generally known as Kids and Children’s Snowsports School Programs (Mighty Mites & Kids Klub) must wear an accredited ski or snowboard helmet. These helmets are available FREE to participants in these programs or through Hotham Sports outlets in conjunction with equipment rental. • All guest participants, of whatever age, in Snowsports School or other resort race programs, which Involve or include terrain parks, pipes, skier/boarder cross and/or race courses will be required to wear an accredited ski or snowboard helmet. • All guest participants, of whatever age, in pre-organised school group lessons, must wear an accredited ski or snowboard helmet. ** All School Students (primary & secondary) SBP/SB Rental packages through Hotham Sports include a Helmet Hotham Institutional Manual 2014 Page 6 For information, pricing and bookings contact Mount Hotham Skiing Company Ticket Office P: 03 5759 4436 F: 03 5759 3164 E: [email protected] W: www.hotham.com.au IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR SMOOTH LESSONS Whether you are a returning group or this is your first visit with us we thought we would send you a checklist to ensure your visit and your lessons go to plan. 1. Please ensure that you have sent an accurate breakdown of student numbers (skiers and snowboarders) to both group bookings and the Snowsports centre. We cannot allocate a lesson time to your group until this has been done. Please either email or ring your numbers through to [email protected] or 57594450. 2. You may choose a preferred lesson time but please understand that due to the enormous levels of business at times we may not be able to give you your first choice. Please check with the Snowsports centre for your allocated time. Once these times have been allocated they may not be able to be changed. We are expecting the volume during the week of 5 July to reach our capacity for lesson time allocation so we ask that you are flexible with your allocated lesson times. The 1.30pm (2hr lesson) and the 12 noon lesson times will definitely be required this week 3. We strongly recommend that you do not allow your students to change from skiing to snowboarding (or visa versa) during the week. This upsets the groups as you will have total beginners in the new discipline who cannot ski/snowboard with your established groups. If you do have a student who changes their discipline and requires another beginner lesson please contact a Snowsports supervisor who may be able to allocate them into our 10.00am or 1.30pm lesson times. 4. We allocate our instructors based upon student numbers only. Whilst teachers may join in the student lessons their presence will increase the group sizes. 5. In some cases schools groups with small numbers may be asked to join other schools or with our retail lessons at 10.00am or 1.30pm. 6. Once you have been allocated a meeting spot please ensure that all your students go to this area for the week to avoid them being left in the meeting place. 7. If you have any students who do not fit into your main groups please see a supervisor who may be able to fit them into another group. 8. 3.30pm lessons will cater to beginner students only. 9. Teachers or other helpers who bring primary school children with a secondary school group will need to purchase kids Snowzone tickets for these students and take them to the Big D for their lessons by 9.15am. We are here to help make your and the students holiday a memorable one so please contact a supervisor with any issues so we can try to rectify any situations prior to the end of your holiday. Thank you for your help in making your visit an exceptional experience. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any further questions. These risks include rapid changes in the weather, visibility and surface conditions, as well as natural and artificial hazards such as rocks, trees, stumps, vehicles, lift towers, snow fences and snowmaking equipment. Observe the code and share with others the responsibility for a great experience. 1. Know your ability and always stay in control and be able to stop and avoid other people or objects. It is your responsibility to stay in control on the ground and in the air. 2. Take lessons from professional instructors to learn and progress. 3. Use appropriate protective equipment to minimise the risk of injury. 4. Before using any lift you must have the knowledge and ability to load, ride and unload safely and always use the restraining devices. 5. Observe and obey all signs and warnings. Keep off closed trails or runs. 6. Give way to people below and beside you on the hill. It is your responsibility to avoid them. 7. Do not stop where you are not clearly visible from above. Look uphill and give way to others when entering/exiting a trail or starting downhill. 8. Always ensure your equipment is in good condition and use suitable restraining devices to avoid runaway skiing/boarding equipment. 9. Do not ski, board, ride a lift or undertake any other alpine activity if your ability is impaired by drugs or alcohol. 10. If you are involved in, or witness an accident or collision, alert Ski Patrol, remain at the scene and identify yourself to the Ski Patrol. KNOW THE CODE. IT’S YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. FAILURE TO OBSERVE THE CODE MAY RESULT IN CANCELLATION OF YOUR TICKET OR PASS BY SKI PATROL OR OTHER AUTHORISED PERSONNEL. ‘RESPECT GETS RESPECT’ FROM THE LIFT LINE, TO THE SLOPES, THROUGH THE PARK AND THE RESORT. * Alpine Responsibility Code is subject to change without notice. These risks include rapid changes in weather, visibility and surface conditions, as well as natural and artificial hazards such as rocks, trees, stumps, vehicles, lift towers, snow fences and snowmaking equipment. Whilst Snowsports carry with them inherent risks as outlined above, teachers can prevent many incidents by encouraging students to stick to terrain appropriate to their ability level and to avoid regularly congested areas. In particular: • • • • • Avoid taking students to the Village Chair, Heavenly Valley or The Orchard until they are able to confidently ski/ride the Sun Run, located near the Road Runner chair. Slalom Gully is one of the busiest runs on the mountain and care should be taken in relation to speed control and giving way to the downhill skier/boarder. When skiing in Slalom Gully make predictable, controlled turns and stick to the edges of the run where possible. Encourage students to attend all their lessons regardless of their ability level as improved technique directly correlates to decreased incidents. Encourage students to read the Pocket Guide to Safety in Alpine Areas provided by the Snowsports School. Ryan Watts Mount Hotham Snowsports Technical Director SLOW ZONES A message from Ski Patrol To ensure safer skiing and snowboarding at Mount Hotham some areas have been designated SLOW ZONES. These areas are generally where there is increased skier and snowboarder traffic such as the convergence of runs and at the bottom of chairlifts. These areas are well signed with SLOW ZONE banners and are highlighted on the mountain trail map. These areas are regularly monitored by Ski Patrol. Slalom Gully is one SLOW ZONE that is of particular concern to Ski Patrol and MHSC as it is a high use area catering to skiers and boarders of varying abilities. As a consequence of the high numbers, accidents are more likely to occur in this area. In recognition of this high risk area all skiers and boarders, regardless of their ability, are expected to travel in a slow and controlled manner. It is essential that students and teachers are aware of the SLOW ZONE areas at Mt Hotham before they enter the slopes. Ski Patrol and other authorised personnel have the authority to remove lift privileges if skiers or boarders who are deemed to be too fast or reckless in these areas. Reckless skiing and boarding is often witnessed in school aged students who are moving onto runs that are beyond their ability. To ensure students leave the mountain uninjured and do not cause injury to other slope users, please insist that students not ski or board in areas that are beyond their ability. Everyone needs to know how to stay in control and be aware of the mountain rules (Alpine Responsibility Code) and the consequences of breaking these rules. Ski Patrol and other authorised personnel will remove reckless or fast skiers and boarders from the slopes. The talks are designed to inform visitors touring or entering the Alpine region about the preparation and precautions that need to be taken to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience in the Alpine environment. The talks are run independently by members of the Ski Patrol and have the full support and assurance of the Mount Hotham Resort Management Board. The Snow Safety talks are usually conducted in the groups’ accommodation and preferably on their first night in the resort. The Snow Safety Talks run by Ski Patrol are designed to inform the group about: • The Alpine Environment and its unique climates • Preparing for activities in the Alpine setting • Snow Safety and how to avoid injury • Basic survival skills in the Alpine surroundings • Important places and phone numbers on the mountain. These topics are related through active discussion with the group, video media and information cards given to the group. The talks usually run for an hour and a half and a standard fee applies. For pricing, please contact Ski Patrol. The fee is negotiable for small groups of 15 people or less. Bookings are essential and numbers need to be confirmed. For more information please contact Hotham Ski Patrol.
