The Tall Ships Races 2014 Bergen Captains Manual Bergen Captains manual The Tall Ships Races 2014 Bergen 24 – 27 July Hey ho, let´s go! www.tallshipsbergen.no 1 Hey ho, let`s go www.tallshipsbergen.no The Tall Ships Races 2014 Bergen Captains Manual Welcome to Bergen! Bergen Once again I have the pleasure and honour to welcome Captains, officers, crew and the many beautiful ships heartily welcome to our city. The Tall Ship Races will now invade our city as hosting harbour for the fourth time, and I can promise you that we will do our very best to serve you. I know that we have the most beautiful scenario for your "armada", and we have prepared our organization to handle whatever coming up. But most important, - people in Bergen and the suburbs are longing to see your ships in the harbour and all of you onshore again. So be prepared to some wonderful days in lovely and historic Bergen. Yours sincerely Trude Drevland Mayor City of Bergen 2 Hey ho, let`s go www.tallshipsbergen.no The Tall Ships Races 2014 Bergen Captains Manual Hey ho, let`s go! Bergen has plenty to offer both those who want to experience something new, and for those who want to breathe in history and old traditions. Bergen is a truly unique city. The main reason for this is its wonderful location and world-famous surroundings. Here, history and long-standing traditions are as important as the city’s vibrant cultural life. The Hanseatic legacy goes hand-in-hand with the status of European City of Culture (2000), both of which are reflected in the cityscape. Bergen Focusing on the shanty tradition Bergen is full of maritime history. Sailing ships from all over the world have visited this port for centuries. The shanty and sea song tradition was, and is, an important part of the life on board sailing ships. This song tradition was brought forward by the first rock `n` rollers ever; the young and tough sailors from the great days of sail! In the old days they said that “a singing ship, is a happy ship” and we aim to prove that Bergen is a truly happy ship! We will focus on giving the crew an opportunity to become more familiar with this song tradition, and hopefully encourage more shanty-singing ships in the future. Hey ho, let`s go Everyday during the festival, from 18.00 – 18.15 there will be sung shanties by cadets standing in the masts of SS Statsraad Lehmkuhl and choirs standing on the quayside (see programme). We encourage all of you to meet up and join in on the daily shanties in front of the SS Statsraad Lehmkuhl. The shanties which will be sung is “South Australia” and Paddy´s Boots” Prove that your ship is a happy ship and show this when arriving and departing Bergen. There will be given a price for best arrival, so clean up your voices and make some noise and show us that your ship is the best to be on board! Also join the shanty competition on Saturday 26 July from the Fish Market stage. The closing ceremony on Saturday 30 July from 21.30 – 23.00 will also focus on the shanty tradition, and will be a combination of ships flutes, metal and shanty. The heavy metal, Enslaved will be playing on the forecastle of Statsraad Lehmkuhl. Please note that some ships will be asked in advance to join in on the closing ceremony by using the ships flute during the ceremony. More information will follow, but make sure you will be there! 3 Hey ho, let`s go www.tallshipsbergen.no The Tall Ships Races 2014 Bergen Captains Manual Contents 1. The Liaison System is based on volunteers working together with a mainly Navy based staff. Bergen has assigned dedicated liaison officers (LO) to each vessel in The Tall Ships' Races. Your vessel will be met by a LO upon arrival in Bergen Port. Your designated LO will meet your vessel upon the 24 July. Some vessels arrive earlier and will be met if the LO is available. If you arrive late at night you will be met the next morning. Through the LO we will provide you with essential information, much of which is contained within this manual, and will keep you up-to-date with any revised or new material throughout your stay in Bergen. Your LO will be pleased to assist you with any queries you may have and to help you with various arrangements that will be required during your stay – details of which appear in this manual and in the crew manual. The LO’s aim is to enable you and your crew to enjoy your visit to Bergen. They will advice you of full details of the social events organised for captains and crews. Bergen The LO will be available daily from 09.00 hours to 22.00 hours. All LO will have mobile telephones to ensure the best contact between your vessel and the designated LO. Name and contact details will be provided by your designated LO directly. In order to provide the maximum assistance, we anticipate that your LO will spend as much time as possible with your ship and crew, and you are cordially requested to afford your LO suitable facilities. The LO-system can also be contacted at the Liaison Center (see map). This is manned day and night with officers on duty. In special cases the CLO can be contacted directly. 8.2 Name & contact details of Chief Liaison Officer Chief Liaison Officer is Captain (N) Åsmund Andersen.
