Southern Peninsula Junior Rep
Information Pack
“Sharks Pride”
WELCOME TO THE SOUTHERN PENINSULA JUNIOR SHARKS
The Southern Peninsula Basketball Association (SPBA) was formed in 1967. Not long after the SPBA
entered a number of junior representative teams in Basketball Victoria’s (BV) junior competition in
metropolitan Melbourne, known as the Victorian Junior Basketball League (VJBL).
The SPBA has senior representative teams that compete in the Big V League, third only to the NBL
(National Basketball League), in senior basketball.
Over the past few seasons there has been considerable growth in basketball across the Mornington
Peninsula. This has been demonstrated in the continual growth of our Representative teams. The
number and quality of teams continues to grow in both our Girls and Boys program.
This information guide will help explain the world of Representative basketball for new families and
reinforce the message to those who have been with us for a while. Please read over the following
carefully, as much of the common Q&A is outlined within this document.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our players, coaches, and team managers the best of
luck for the coming 2014-2015 VJBL season, and also to remind you that you are now part of the
Southern Peninsula BA representative program which has a proud history. I ask that you conduct
yourself in a manner that continues to see the SPBA develop and be seen as the leading junior
representative sporting program on the Mornington Peninsula.

Information for Players and Parents
Playing Representative Level Basketball
Junior representative basketball is an elite competition. It is for players who are committed to
developing and improving their basketball skills and knowledge. At Southern Peninsula we provide
individuals and team’s the opportunity to maximise their potential by competing at the highest level
possible, given their own ability. The aim of the Southern Peninsula Junior Rep program is to promote
the game of basketball within our community and to develop players.
All players in a team at this level have an important role to play despite how much court time each
player may or may not receive. Coaches will want all players to develop steadily, not just the best
players on the team. Playing Representative basketball is very different to Domestic Basketball.
Attitude to your team mates, your coach and your willingness to listen and improve, along with your
level of skill are all factors in what will determine the amount of minutes played. All parents to need to
be aware of this.
The Southern Peninsula Sharks Junior Teams play other representative teams in a competition across
Melbourne. Teams play at three levels:
Victorian Junior Championship - Known as ‘VC’, this is the highest level at which junior teams can play.
Victorian Junior Leagues - Divided into four tiers in 2009; VJL 1, VJL 2, VJL 3 and VJL 4
Regional -There are two competitions: Eastern Qualifying and North Western
Shark’s players must continue to participate in the Domestic Competition to be eligible to play
representative basketball; this only applies to our U12 and U14 teams. All players that do not play
domestic still need to pay SPBA $48 insurance fees as this will cover you for training. Administration will
conduct an audit in February and invoice players accordingly.
Playing Times & Venues
Matches are played on Friday nights ranging from a 6:40 start for the younger age groups through to a
9:40 start for the senior age groups. Venue locations will vary from week to week, however a home
game at Dromana Stadium (SPBA’s home court) will typically occur every second week once the
Championship season commences. Players are expected to arrive 40 minutes before tip-off. For parents
with multiple children, car-pooling has proven a successful option. A list of venues is attached.

Team Managers Duties
Each Junior Representative team must elect a Team Manager. The following list details of the duties of a
Shark’s Team Manager. Each team will be issued with a team bag at the start of the season. This team
5
bag contains, basketballs, first aid kit, white board and various other items. It is the Team Managers
responsibility to ensure all items are looked after and not misplaced.
A team manager’s main job is to ensure that the coach “just coaches” and doesn’t have to worry about:
 Who is scoring

Whether there is a uniform colour clash (home team needs to change) and
Team Managers should take to each game the following:
Drink Bottles (players to purchase)
List of player details – name, date of birth, address, phone, parents names (you will be provided with a full set
of player registration forms and medical forms that all players and parents fill out prior to registration) Fixture,
Scoring roster, List of venues, put all notices received in a folder. These may be handy to refer back to during
the season.
1.
It is important to support the coach 100%. If any problems with parents or players within
the team come about then the coach needs to be aware of what is happening.
2.
Be aware that if there is a colour clash the HOME team or, if at a neutral venue the first
named team must change colour.
3.
Each team must provide a competent scorer. Team Manager should prepare a scoring
roster with all parents taking turns. Any parent not confident to score should be given
assistance by another parent in the team. The Association will be running a scoring school
at the beginning of the season to teach any parent about scoring.
*Note: Where teams have siblings please ensure the parents scoring roster covers both siblings and not
just the family. This ensures an even spread of scoring turns.
The Team Manager pays the team sheet fee at the door (make sure it is stamped ‘paid’ as no team can play
until this is done) and completes the Team Score Sheet
Ensure that all the relevant details are filled out on the Team Sheet, i.e. Team name, Age group,
Division, Date, Venue, Coach’s name and team member’s names and numbers starting with lowest
number first and finishing with the highest number. The VJBL issues fines for incomplete score sheets
ALSO all players must fill in their name and sign (full signature and not just initials) the back of the
score sheet! DON’T FORGET TO COMPLETE! All players must meet a minimum numbers of games to
play in the finals and signatures are the only verification of this. The Team Manager must also ensure
that the Coaches name has been written on the score sheet. VJBL will issue $10.00 fines to teams that
don’t complete this each week.
Scoring
Comprehensive instructions on how to score are available to parents through the office. Parents are
expected to share the scoring duties via a roster that will be made out by the team manager (Refer to
Team Manager’s Duties)
Court Time Management
Representative basketball is considered an elite development program and as such does not operate
with the same guidelines as domestic competitions. A basic principle within the representative program
is that court time is not guaranteed for any player.
There are two key parameters that determine the court time an individual player may receive:
1. The game environment – at the discretion of the coach, playing time is subject to:
6
-
The level of competition,
The role of the player in each game, and
The importance of the game.
2. For clear disciplinary reasons – a coach may reduce court time if the player:
-
Does not attend all practices,
Is not punctual for all practices and games,
Does not give 100% effort during games and practices,
Does not attend a training session without notifying the coach, and
Displays poor sportsmanship towards players, officials or spectators.
Players or parents who are concerned about playing time should initially discuss the matter with the
Coach or Assistant Coach. If you do not believe the matter has been resolved or you require any further
information then you should contact the Director of Coaching, Gerard Hillier. (03 5981 0347)
Note: Coaches are to make themselves readily available to discuss any matters regarding to the players
within the team.
Note II: Please do not approach coaches directly after the game as this is not the most appropriate time
to raise your concerns, the best time would be before the teams next scheduled training. Simply text or
call the coach and request a quick catch up prior to training commencing.
