WELCOME TO THE WAVERLEY FALCONS
The Waverley Falcons were formed in 1982 as the representative arm of Waverley Basketball
Association (WBA). Junior teams compete in Basketball Victoria’s (BV) elite level competition in
metropolitan Melbourne. The WBA’s senior teams compete in the Big V League (formerly the
Victorian Basketball League (VBL).
Over the past five seasons considerable growth has been experienced across all age groups in both
the boys and girls programs. This information guide will help explain the world of representative
basketball for new families and reinforce the message to those who have been with us for a while.

3. INFORMATION FOR PLAYERS AND PARENTS
3.1 Playing Representative Level Basketball
The Waverley Falcons Junior Teams play against other representative teams in a competition
across Melbourne. Teams play at three levels:


Victorian Championship.
o
Known as ‘VC’, and is the highest level at which junior teams can play.
o
Split at half way point to form VC Championship and VC Reserve.
VJL (Previously Known as Metro)
o

Divided into four tiers in 2006; VJL 1, VJL 2, VJL 3 and VJL 4.
Regional
o
There are two competitions: Eastern Qualifying and North Western.
Falcon’s players are expected to continue to participate in the Waverley Domestic Competition.
3.2 Playing Times and Venues
Matches are played on Friday nights ranging from a 6:40 start for the younger age groups (very
occasionally a 6.00pm start may be scheduled) through to a 9:40 start for the older age groups.
Venue locations will vary from week to week however every team is guaranteed an equal number of
games played either at home, away or at neutral venues. For parents with multiple children carpooling has proven a successful option in the past to lighten the load. A list of venues can be found
on page 9.
3.3 Venue Entry and Inter-Venue Passes
Each stadium charges an admission fee of approximately $2.00 – $3.00. Stadium Entry Fees need
only to be paid at one venue for families visiting multiple venues. Players must pay where they
are scheduled to play. Non players such as parents, guardians and spectators pay their
admission charge at the first venue they visit on a Friday evening. Please collect your inter-venue
pass at the conclusion of your first visit, through the cashier or ticket box on exit.
3.4 Training and Game Day Attendance
Training sessions are conducted on Sundays throughout the season, and are typically 1½ hours
long. Coaches will advise which teams might be required to have a second session. These sessions
will be conducted sometime during the week at no extra cost to the athletes if Waverley courts are
available.
All players should arrive at training, ready to start at their allocated time. This means if training is at
10am then you start at 10.00am, and not arrive at 10.00am.
Generally, coaches ask players to arrive to the game, approx 30 minutes before tip-off. This allows
sufficient time for players to familiarise themselves with the venue, warm up, and time for the coach
to address the team.
It is important that the coach and/or team manager are advised ASAP if a player is sick or injured,
and unable to play/train. The earlier the coach is informed, the earlier he/she can adjust
game/training plan.
For the coach to hear that a player is unavailable via another player just before tip-off is unfair and
unacceptable.

3.5 Tournaments
The Waverley Falcons use tournaments as part of their development plan. The Eltham/Dandenong
Tournament (Australia Day weekend in January) is used to get teams prepared for the upcoming
season. Players will make themselves available to play. Other tournaments coaches may elect to
participate in include:
National Junior Classic Classic (By Invitation Only) – Queens Birthday weekend
Melbourne Tigers Tournament – June / July holidays
Nunawading Tournament – Queens Birthday
Norwood Easter Classic (Adelaide) – Easter
3.6 Fees
Fees for 2013/2014 season are listed below. These can be made payable to “Waverley Basketball
Association” via cheque or paid in cash to the WBA office at Waverley. If you are unable to pay fees
by the required date please call Mike Bullock to discuss other payment options.

3.7 Scoring
Due to all venues not providing and using Jamwares ‘LiveScore’ touch screen monitors for scoring,
manual score sheets are in use for the VJBL League on Friday Nights, and all other representative
basketball. ‘Jamware LiveScore’ is only available for Waverley Domestic competitions.
Instructions on how to score and a copy of the official VJBL score sheet are available through the
VJBL website, the WBA administration office, or please read carefully FIBA Brochure available to
download on our website below the information pack. An online scoring session can be viewed on
YouTube for all families to watch at their own convenience: http://youtu.be/gshpK-JL0bE
Visit the FIBA website (www.fiba.com) and click on ‘Basketball Rules’ and you will find an 80 page
comprehensive handbook of rules and scoring information. Pages 51 – 59 include instructions for
scorer (score sheet) and scorer assistant (scoreboard operator). This includes official referee
signals, 24 second shot clock instructions, and all other things you need to know.
3.8 Uniforms
Compulsory Uniform
All Falcons players must be in uniform at all times when representing the Waverley Falcons. In
order to keep the cost for parents to a minimum, only the playing shorts and warm-up tops are
compulsory items. Playing singlets are provided by Waverley for the season at no extra cost. A
reversible training top is issued to all new players on the payment of their Subscription fees. You
must return your playing singlets at the end of the season so they can be reissued the following
year.
Mouth Guards are also strongly recommended. Players will not be insured for any dental injuries
sustained during basketball, unless they are wearing a mouth guard. The WBA recommends
Stirton Dental Laboratories, who have been professionally fitting custom made mouth guards to our
players for years. Stirton Dental Laboratories can be called on 9572-1599.
Optional extras available to everyone, listed below, are available at the Falcon’s Pro Shop for
purchase.
The Falcon’s Pro Shop is located upstairs inside the Falcons clubroom, and can be opened during
business hours. The Pro Shop will be moving to an online system, and details will be on the
website www.wavereleybasketball.com

3.9 Conflict Resolution
Basketball is no different to any aspect of life, and there will be conflict from time to time. If a
resolution cannot be reached through your team manager and coach, contact Mike Bullock.

4. CODE OF CONDUCT
Basketball is intended to be a recreational activity for enjoyment and health. This code of conduct has
been developed by Basketball Victoria to give participants some guide to the expectations it has on
those participants. It is intended to assist everyone to obtain the maximum benefit and enjoyment from
their involvement in basketball. As a result, the quality of participation will be improved so people are
more likely to start and continue their involvement in basketball. Enjoy!! The Waverley Falcons abide by
Basketball Victoria’s code of conduct for players, parents and spectators. The full version of these
expectations is located on the Basketball Victoria website and they can also be found posted on stadium
noticeboards.

6. TEAM MANAGERS DUTIES
A team manager’s main job is to ensure that the coach “just coaches” and does not have to worry
about:
 Who is scoring

Whether there is a uniform colour clash (home team needs to change) and

Whether all the players are able to play.
It is important to support the coach 100%, and if any problems with parents or players arise, then
the coach needs to be aware of what is happening.
Falcons Team Manager Duties
Organising team list:
Once teams have been confirmed, and a team manager appointed, the team manager needs to
collect details of each player, including name, address, D.O.B, parents’ names, phone numbers and
email address.
Team managers will receive a bag of singlets, which are to be issued to each player. Once this is
done, a team list can be set up in players’ numerical order. Please note it is the team manager’s
responsibility to collect all singlets at the conclusion of the season and return them to the office.
It is also a good idea to set up a group email list, so that communication can start straight away.
Before the game:
Before the game (usually Wednesday), team managers need to visit the VJBL website to obtain
game details, and then send these onto the team via email.
They also need to check if there will be a colour clash. If so, be aware that the HOME team, or if at
a neutral venue, the first named team must change colour. At home games, Waverley teams can
obtain singlets from the Canteen, if playing away from Waverley, tops can be arranged by calling
the WBA office during business hours.
Each team must provide a competent scorer. All parents are to take a turn and a roster is to be
provided by the Team Manager. Any parent not confident to score should be given assistance by
another parent in the team.
Please note that the HOME team or the first named team operates the scoreboard (and shot clock if
required), and the AWAY team, does the scoresheet.

Game Day Duties:
After entering the venue, the team manager locates the scoresheet, and pays for it. Payments vary
from venue to venue, and can range from $40 to $60. Make sure that the cashier stamps the sheet
as ‘PAID’.
Once paid for, the team manager must ensure that all the relevant details are filled out, i.e.
Team name, Age group, Division, Date, Venue, Coach’s name and team members names and
numbers(on both sides), starting from lowest to highest number.
Please note the association receives a significant monetary fine if the coach’s name is not filled in at the
top of the score sheet.
ALSO, all players must sign their name (full signature and not just initials) on the back of the score sheet!
DON’T FORGET TO COMPLETE! All players must meet a minimum numbers of games to play in the
finals and signatures are the only verification of this.
Once the scoresheet has been completed by both teams, it can be taken to the scorebench after
completion of previous game.
Collection of scoresheet payments:
All players need to pay for the scoresheet whether they play or not. As the team managers are
responsible for paying upfront on the day, they need to collect payment from players in advance, so as to
create a kitty. Players can be given the option of paying week by week or a lump sum, so that the team
manager is not collecting every week. It is a good idea to keep a record of payments made to the kitty.
7. GRADING PHASE AND GAMES

Grading Game details during the pre grading and grading season, are usually up on the
VJBL website by Wednesday afternoon. Click on’ Fixtures and Results’, then click
appropriate age group, to find your teams’ game details.

Once the season commences in March, the fixture for the whole season is usually published.
It is important though to check each week that there are no changes.
