Page 1 of 5 Introduction WelTec promotes lifelong learning and is committed to working with students to provide a quality educational experience. This Student Code of Conduct sets out the standards and principles that WelTec students are required to comply with, as part of maintaining an atmosphere and environment that encourages learning and effective partnerships by treating people of all ages, cultures and backgrounds, and the campus facilities and environment, with respect and consideration. It is not practicable to expressly provide for every possibility and eventuality in this Code of Conduct. In addition, this Code of Conduct is a guide. WelTec reserves the right to address any specific situation as it considers appropriate. 1 Scope This policy applies to all students, on or off campus, on any course related activities, as well as in respect of any other activity or conduct on the part of the student which could impact on either the appropriateness of the student’s enrolment or on WelTec’s operations, standing or reputation. The Academic Regulations apply for academic misconduct. 2 Policy The Student Code of Conduct is the expected standard of behaviour for students while studying at WelTec. The Student Code of Conduct is made available to students in hard copy at the Learning Commons and at the commencement of their studies through access to Student Information documents and electronically via the student intranet. When required, disciplinary action is intended to be primarily educative and secondarily to discourage reoccurrence. However, where appropriate, the institution may decide to cancel the enrolment of a person as a student at WelTec, or in a particular programme or scheme at the institution. 3 Student Code of Conduct 3.1 Behaviour WelTec expects that all students will: Take responsibility for their own behaviour and participate in their own learning. Respect the dignity and rights of all members of the campus community. Respect the environment and property of WelTec staff, students, visitors and residential neighbours. 3.2 Harassment and other Inappropriate Conduct Students shall not engage in any intimidation, violence, bullying, unreasonable disruption, unlawful discrimination, or any harassment of other students, staff or any member of the public at any time, or disclose confidential information while at any WelTec campus or while engaged in WelTec activities. Page 2 of 5 3.3 Smoke Free Campus All WelTec campuses are completely smoke free. This includes buildings and grounds. Smoking is not permitted in or around any premises operated by WelTec. (1) 3.4 Alcohol and Prohibited Drugs Any student entering any WelTec campus, or undertaking any WelTec activities or study shall be free from the influence of: Any drug that is not lawfully prescribed for that student; and Alcohol in a situation where this is inappropriate. 3.5 Health and Safety WelTec students shall share in the responsibility of maintaining a safe and healthy working environment whether on campus or studying off-site. To this end, students shall: Advise the Institute at enrolment of any disability, that may require additional health and safety support in any given situation, to ensure such support is available when needed Comply with all safety rules and procedures including in relation to fire and emergency evacuation procedures, and any other safety regulations and procedures Follow all directions of staff, or any third party responsible for students, to ensure such safety regulations and procedures are carried out Notify a staff member as soon as possible of any actual or potential hazards (including any to the student themselves), incidents, accidents or emergency situations on any WelTec campus or in relation to any WelTec activity or course Meet all specified requirements and pre-requisite standards for work experience. 3.6 Information and Communication Technology Students are responsible for ensuring that all activities on their individual network account meet the standards of conduct appropriate to an educational institute. This includes but is not limited to all WelTec students not using their account or any WelTec system or hardware, nor allowing anyone else to use any account or system or hardware, to: Copy, modify or install software without authority Infringe copyright regulations or any intellectual property Access, obtain, alter, add or erase data without proper authority Use the WelTec ICT resources to incur cost to WelTec or anyone else, except where prior express authority is obtained Use social media (including but not limited to twitter, facebook and other internet functions or sites) in a manner which brings or is likely to bring WelTec into disrepute. Access, store, view, publish or distribute material which is objectionable, or offensive or otherwise inappropriate in an educational institute. 4 Misconduct 4.1 Misconduct Misconduct means any behaviour or conduct inconsistent with the expectations of being in a learning environment, including but not limited to a breach of this Code of Conduct. Page 3 of 5 4.2 Serious Misconduct Serious misconduct means misconduct that by its nature and/or degree: Negatively affects (or has the potential to negatively affect) the safety of other students or staff of the institution; or brings, or could bring, the name of the institution or its quality standards or reputation into disrepute; or Involves behaviour considered seriously inappropriate for a student of the institution; or Is recurring misconduct, not necessarily of the same type in each case; or Is conduct which calls into question whether the student should remain enrolled at WelTec. 5 Links The legislation relevant to this Code of Conduct includes the following (together with any amendments or re-enactments): Misuse of Drugs Act (1975) Official Information Act (1982) Sale of Liquor Act (1989) The Education Act (1989) Health and Safety in Employment Act (1992) Film, Videos and Publication Classification Act (1993) Human Rights Act (1993) Privacy Act (1993) Copyright Act (1994) Harassment Act (1997) Copyright (Infringement File Sharing) Amendment Act (2011) 6 Procedures The procedures for dealing with any allegations of misconduct are in the Student Code of Conduct Procedures. 7 Contact Person The following person may be approached in relation to this policy: Academic Services Manager In addition, any person wishing to report alleged misconduct may approach a staff member with their allegation.
