St. Paul confesses to having persecuted the Church ferociously. Paul does not say "I am good, I am from a Catholic family, I have a certain nobility." No, Paul says, "I was a persecutor. I've been bad". He remembers his past life, and he remembers it from the very beginning. This habit of remembering our life is not a very common practice today. We forget things. We live in the present and forget the past. Each of us has a story: a story of grace, a story of sin, a story of journey, so many good and wrong things ... It is a good thing to pray with St. Paul who says: “He has chosen me! He called me! He saved me! He was my companion on the journey.” The act of remembering our own lives is to give glory to God. Remembering on our sins, by which the Lord has saved us, is to give glory to God. Paul says that he has only two things: his sins, and the grace of the Crucified Lord, His grace. Paul remembered his sins and said: 'I was a sinner, but Christ Crucified saved me.’ This was Paul’s memory. This is remembering that Jesus saves and he himself invites us to think about it. To you we turn with trust. Holy Family of Nazareth, grant that our families may be places of communion and prayer, authentic schools of the Gospel and small domestic Churches. Holy Family of Nazareth, may families never again experience violence, rejection and division. May all who have been hurt or scandalized find ready comfort and healing. Holy Family of Nazareth, may the Synod of Bishops make us more mindful of the sacredness and inviolability of the family, and its beauty in God’s plan. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, graciously hear our prayer. Amen Dear Padre From the Pastor’s Desk WHAT WE BELIEVE Question: In my days as an altar-boy, during the Offertory the priest was pouring into the chalice some wine and a few drops of water. Why? Answer: You are right! When I was serving Mass as an altar-boy, I was wondering why my pastor was counting the drops of water to pour into the wine. They were three all the time. In my little mischievous mind I thought the pastor was careful to pour only three drops of water for not spoiling the wine with too much water. When I conveyed that explanation to the young assistant pastor, he got chocked by laughter. After regaining his composure, he explained to me that wine and water symbolize the blood and water that flowed from the side of Jesus when he was pierced by the soldier’s lance. St. John in his Gospel records that, “When the soldiers came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs, but one of the soldiers thrust his lance into his side, and immediately blood and water flowed out (Jn 19:33).” So, when the priest consecrates the wine into the Blood of Christ, he also remembers the event just described. If you have the opportunity to look at the image of Jesus, Divine Mercy, who appeared to St. Faustina Kowalska in 1931 in Poland, you can see that two rays flow from his Sacred Heart. One is red (blood) and the second is white (water). The red ray symbolizes the Precious Blood of Christ (the Eucharist), while the white ray symbolizes the water of Baptism (the Church). In the meantime the priest recites this prayer, “By the mystery of this water and wine may we come to share in the divinity of Christ who humbled himself to share in our humanity.” The Offertory Rite helps us to enter into the mystery of offering ourselves to the Father as Jesus did when on the cross. It is the time of the Mass when each person present in church should offer himself or herself to God. We offer to God what we are and what we have; the good we have done and the wrongdoing we have done. We offer our daily work; our daily joys and sorrows; our daily crosses and sufferings; our love to God and to our neighbor; our family life; our school life; our playing basketball and our cooking; our doing laundry and our exercising at the gym; our driving the car and our watching TV. We offer our prayers and our thanksgiving for the daily blessings we receive. (Mmmh! I have my doubts on the goodness of offering the constant texting and taking selfies!) In those few drops of wine and water there is my life, my dreams, my joys, my good and bad days, my whole me. Everything I am and have is given back to God for his glory. When the Church says that we in the pews have to have an active participation to the Mass, she means what I just described. I should not be a sack of potatoes sitting on the pew thinking about the Patriots’ game or the new boyfriend, but an active soul and mind that are connected to what happens on the altar before our eyes. The Offertory Rite comprises also the offertory collection, my participation and support to the life of my parish by my prayer and financial contribution. If the parish is a family, a family is supported by all its members, children and adults alike, who participate according to their possibilities. Remember that our faith is never a private matter that affects only me. Faith is a public and communal affair that brings into play the single individuals and the entire community of the parish. If God is love; if God is a community of three Divine Persons forming the Trinitarian family, we who are created according to the image and likeness of God should be love, community and family, too. “Every day say to the Lord, “I love you, O Lord. Give me your grace. I thank you.” Saint Louis Guanella WE ARE A TITHING PARISH GOD’S PLAN FOR GIVING A WEEK AGO $ 3,078.00 CHILDREN $ 20.05 A YEAR AGO $ 3,056.00 CHILDREN $ 19.45 “The true purpose of tithing is to secure not the tithe, but the tither; not the gift, but the giver; not your money, but you...for God. "What's that Joey?" asked Goldblatt. "Well accordin' to the Bible, the Children of Israel crossed the Red Sea, right?" "Right." "An' the Children of Israel beat up the Phillistines, right?" "Right." "An' the Children of Israel built the Temple, right?" "Again you're right." "An' the Children of Israel fought the 'gyptians, an' the Children of Israel fought the Romans, an' the Children of Israel would always doin' somethin' important, right?" "All that is right, too," agreed Goldblatt. "So what's your question?" "What I wanna know is this," demanded Joey. "What would all the grown-ups doin when the children do everything?" The Brown Apple A four-year-old boy was eating an apple in the back seat of the car, when he asked, "Daddy, why is my apple turning brown?" "Because," his dad explained, "after you ate the skin off, the meat of the apple came into contact with the air, which caused it to oxidise, thus changing the molecular structure and turning it into a different color." There was a long silence. Then the son asked softly, "Daddy, are you talking to me?"
