At Shore Coaches X-C Meet
Blue Devil Gymnasts Defeat
CR Cougars, 107-103.575
The Westfield High School gymnastics team improved to 5-0 on the
season with a 107-103.575 victory
over the rivaling Cranford Cougars at
Cranford High School on September
30. The Blue Devils were led by senior captains Hannah Goldring, Mae
Devin and Jenna Rizkalla and got
important contributions from junior
Megan Melillo, sophomore Hannah
Prieto and freshman Lexi Fasano.
Kelly McAuliffe and Lauren Costa
were strong in all four events for the
Cougars, but it was not enough to
withstand the talented depth of the
Blue Devils, who had nine gymnasts
compete in the meet.
With the victory over the Cougars,
Scotch Plains-Fanwood and the A.L.
Johnson Crusaders, the Blue Devils
have only one remaining potential
Union County rival remaining with
the Summit Hilltoppers, who will host
a regular-season meet on October 14.
The fourth ranked Blue Devils are
rounding into form as they head into
the heart of their schedule with key
home meets against East Brunswick
on Friday, October 10, and Hunterdon
Central on Thursday, October 16, before hosting the Union County Tournament on Friday, October 24.

cornerback Catanzaro picked off a
Tiger pass at the Westfield 40 and
returned to the Linden 45. Unfortunately, the Blue Devil offense failed
to capitalize on the good field position. Next, Blue Devil linebacker Luke
Prybylski stuffed a Tiger fourth down
reverse for a five-yard loss, which
gave Westfield possession at their own
28 with 1:43 remaining. Westfield
then moved the ball into Linden territory, but cornerback Samad Starling
picked off Malacrea’s pass and returned it to the Westfield 36. Two
plays later, Catanzaro, who had three
interceptions against Scotch PlainsFanwood, intercepted again to send
the game into overtime.
“Maybe we should work on a pitch
play during practice after a pick since
he’s getting so many,” Pryblyski suggested.
Linden won the coin toss at the
start of overtime and opted to allow
Westfield to go on the offensive.
Simcox had respective carries of 12,
five and eight yards to put the Blue
Devils up 13-7. Moriarty’s point after
kick was good, but Linden got a roughing the kicker penalty of 15 yards
tagged onto their possession that
started at the 40. A 24-yard reception
put the ball at the 16 then five plays
later, Guillaume slipped in from the
three and Dolbrice’s successful twopoint conversion pass to Ampey gave
the Tigers victory.
“Everybody stepped up. Mike
O’Connor was hurt, so Steve
Barmakian had to play a lot, Brendan
Collum, Kyle Dombrowski all
stepped up huge,” Simcox said.
“We held our own. We had some
injuries during the week with Mike
O’Connor getting hurt. We needed to
switch some linebackers around. Our
whole defense played a heck of a
game. We are really proud of ourselves. We are going to go work next
week against Ridge and hope we all
get it together and pull off a ‘W’ there,
get back to .500 and look to see these
guys [Linden] again in the playoff,”
Prybylski said.

TIME FOR SOME MEDITATION...Raider senior running back Emendo Thomas takes some time to meditate during the third quarter of the game against the
North Hunterdon Lions.

Fogel for their 55-yard scoring strike
and a 14-7 lead, the Lions were at it
again early in the second quarter.
This time it was running back Rob
Marron, who swept around the left
side of the Raiders’ defense and raced
51 yards for a touchdown with 9:08
left in the half staking North
Hunterdon to a 21-7 lead.
The Raiders answered with a strong
10-play, 72-yard drive that was ended
with running back Kobe White bursting up the gut of the North defense for
a 10 yard touchdown run. The drive
featured a heavy dose of White, who
carried six times for 39 yards . The
score cut the deficit to 21-14 with
4:41 remaining in the half.
North Hunterdon needed just two
plays to score again. After a tacklebreaking 39 yard run by running back
Jordan Ditzel, McDonald took care
of the rest by sprinting around the left
end and outracing the Raider defense
to the cone for a 15-yard touchdown.
Down 28-14, the Raiders’ offense
was in familiar territory having just
prevailed in a 51-48 shootout less
than a week earlier against Ridge.
But the Lions’ arsenal proved to be
too much on this day and the Raiders
could not match them score for score.
The Raiders were forced to punt
with under two minutes left in the
half. McDonald took charge and
promptly hit Fogel behind the Raider
secondary again for a 40-yard gain
that put the ball at the Raider one.
From there, Ditzel punched it in to
make the score 35-14.

The Westfield High School gymnastics team upped its record to 6-0
with a 104.425-62.85 win over the
Union Farmers in Union on October
2. Neither team entered an individual
for the all-around honors, but Blue
Devils Lexi Fasano took top honors
in the vault with a 9.15, Hannah
Goldring won the uneven bars with
an 8.725, Mae Devin won the balance
beam with a 9.1 and Sarah Fox won
the floor exercise with an 8.9.
Goldring placed second on the vault
at 8.925, followed by Farmer Jenna
Carvalho at 9.725, Fox at 8.55 and
Blue Devil Megan Troutman at 8.15.
Troutman placed second on the bars
at 8.15, followed by Blue Devils
Sydney Keenan at 8.1 and Lexi Holzer
at 7.55. Sydney Keenan also took
second on the beam with an 8.95,
followed by Blue Devils Megan
Melillo at 8.825, Fox at 8.7 and Nicole
Dispensa at 8.45. Holzer took second
on the floor at 8.55, followed by
Sydney Keenan at 8.325, Farmer Brittany Makhanda-Smith at 8.05 and
Blue Devil Zoe Federbusch at 7.975.
The Raiders never mounted much
of a threat in the second half. North
Hunterdon, meanwhile, scored on a
37-yard field goal midway through
the third quarter then delivered the
knockout blow on a five-yard touchdown run through the middle of the
Raiders’ defense early in the fourth
quarter for the final 45-14 tally.
The Raiders, once again, got effective running from their backfield
combo of White (13 carries, 113 yards,
TD) and Thomas (16 carries, 124
yards, TD) but they were rarely able
to sustain drives nor come up with the
big play as they had a week earlier
against Ridge.
“We ran the same stretch play and
‘iso’ blasts that we ran last week,”
said Stack. “We just didn’t break any
big ones this week like we did against
Ridge. We were always a hair away
from breaking one. Emendo had a
play in the final minute of the first
half where he breaks through the line
at midfield with nobody in front of
him and one of their DBs brings him
down by the shoelaces. Otherwise
that is a score and we go into the half
down 35-21.”
Raider quarterback Marques Taylor hit five of 11 for 36 yards, while
McDonald completed seven of 15 for
222 yards and a score. Ditzel scored
two touchdowns and rushed for 104
yards on 17 carries. Fogel caught
three passes for 111 yards and a touchdown for the Lions, who racked up
450 yards of total offense.
“In our first two games we really
held the opposing offenses in check,”
said Maxwell. “In these last couple of
games we’ve taken a step back. We
have had a lot of blown coverages and
miscommunications on the field.
We’ve got to get that fixed.”
The Raiders plays host to Linden
this weekend so the defensive adjustments need to come quickly.
