Sliema is located close to Valletta, the capital of the Republic of Malta, the smallest member of the European Union. Malta International Airport (approximately 10 km from Sliema) has daily direct flights to and from the major European cities. On 316 square kilometers, Malta concentrates splendid witnesses to an eventful history that goes back to the Bronze Age and saw periods of Arabian, Italian, French and British dominance. The HIC/RPC Conference series, which alternates between Europe and the US, provides a unique forum for in-depth discussions on downstream bioprocessing. It focuses on the increased scientific understanding of the hydrophobic nature of biological targets and their chromatographic isolation and purification. The program will put a special focus on current DSP topics such as antibody-drugconjugates or multimodal chromatography. The Conference will seek to maintain an optimal balance of fundamental science, engineering, and important industrial advances or applications. Recognized professionals will provide insights into their areas of expertise. This combination of knowledge and experience will lead to a deeper understanding of molecular interactions and improved process design for biopurification steps. To encourage young professionals to attend the conference, we have introduced a reduced junior participant fee. The exchange of scientific ideas in a collegial atmosphere can create new approaches and solutions for downstream purification steps. From basic theory to industrial scale purification, recognized professionals will share their expertise and experiences on all aspects of chromatographic separation and process design for biomolecules. The practical elements of chromatographic development and implementation will be balanced by panel and individual discussions about novel approaches and theories. This combination will lead to a deeper understanding of the hydrophobic molecular interactions affecting chromatographic selectivity and capacity, and the application of this knowledge to large scale purifications. SCIENTIFIC CONTENT The program will consist of lectures and poster presentations contributed by scientists worldwide. Recognized experts in industrial applications will present issues of topical interest and lead discussions on a wide range of subjects. Poster presentations and scheduled speakers will cover the following areas: • Fundamentals of Hydrophobic Interaction and Multimodal Chromatography • Industrial Applications of Hydrophobic Interaction and Multimodal Chromatography • New Developments in Packing Materials and Operating Conditions • New Antibody Formats and Antibody-Drug-Conjugates • HIC for Bionanoparticle, Virus and VLP Purifications The final program will be published in February 2015. 3 9 Committee Chairperson Alois Jungbauer University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna, Austria Alois Jungbauer is Professor at the Department of Biotechnology. He is working in the field of bioengineering of proteins, plasmids and viruses with a special focus on expression, downstream processing and characterization of large biomolecules. His international reputation is evidenced by his long record of scientific publications and patents. Committee Members Tim Breece Xoma Corporation Berkeley, CA, USA Tim Breece is currently a Senior Scientist in Purification Development at Xoma Corporation in Berkeley, California, a position he has held since 2009. Here he develops purification processes for monoclonal antibodies from the allosteric antibody research program at Xoma. His main focus is in chromatography development, but his responsibilities include all facets of downstream focusing. Prior to Xoma, Tim was at Genentech for 24 years with positions in the Technology Assessment, Purification Development and Manufacturing departments. He has a long track record of scientific articles, presentations and patents. From 2002 – 2010, he served as an instructor for the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Bioprocessing Technical Seminars lecturing on chromatography scale-up and monoclonal antibody purification. He received his BS in chemical engineering and applied biology from the University of California at Berkeley. Jie Chen Dyax Corporation Cambridge, MA, USA Jie Chen is Senior Director of Protein Science at Dyax Corporation. She joined Dyax in 2000. Since then, she held several positions in process development and protein science function areas. Jie currently leads the Protein Sciences team at Dyax for process and formulation development, product characterization and preclinical research lot production. She is also involved in overseeing the process tech transfer to GMP manufacture contractors and GMP manufacturing activities for Dyax small protein and antibody products. Prior to joining Dyax she worked in various biomedical research fields and biotech companies, and also as clinical oncologist for several years. 4 9 Committee Members (continued) Steven M. Cramer Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Troy, NY, USA Steve Cramer is Professor of Chemical and Biological Engineering. He is conducting research on several areas related to chromatographic bioprocessing with a long record of scientific publications and patents. He has won numerous awards including the 2006 Alan S. Michaels Award for the Recovery of Biological Products. Klaus Graumann Sandoz GmbH Kundl, Austria Klaus Graumann holds a PhD in Biotechnology and joined Sandoz Biopharmaceuticals in 2001. Since then, he held several positions in technical development of biopharmaceuticals for Sandoz and other divisions of Novartis. Since July 2010 he is Global Head Technical Development Operations. Milton Hearn Monash University Clayton, Victoria, Australia Milton Hearn is Professor of Biochemistry and Director of the Centre for Bioprocess Technology. His research interests have focused on the development and application of new methods for biochemical analysis and separation with a long record of scientific publications and patents. He has received various awards including the H.J. Smith Medal of the RACI, the Japan Society for the Advancement of Science Award and the Alexander von Humboldt Forschungspreis. Thorsten Lemm Roche Diagnostics GmbH Penzberg, Germany In his function as Head of Recovery & Downstream Process Development at Roche Pharma Technical Development (Europe), Thorsten Lemm is responsible for downstream process and technology development for biologics/large molecules. Thorsten received his PhD in biochemistry in 1998 and has meanwhile accumulated 15 years of experience in diagnostics and pharma biotech development at Roche. 5 9 Committee Members (continued) Egbert Müller Tosoh Bioscience Stuttgart, Germany Egbert Müller is Technical Director at Tosoh Bioscience GmbH. He is a Lecturer in Industrial Biotechnology at the University Darmstadt (Germany) and owns numerous patents for surface modification techniques of chromatographic resins. Arne Staby Novo Nordisk A/S Gentofte, Denmark Arne Staby is the Senior Principal Scientist of CMC Project Planning & Management at Novo Nordisk A/S. He obtained a PhD in Chemical Engineering from The Technical University of Denmark, Department of Chemical Engineering in 1993, and after finishing his post-doc in 1994 he has been working with development of purification processes for recombinant proteins and peptides at Novo Nordisk A/S, both as scientist, specialist, project manager, and department head. He has published and holds many papers and patents. In 2009, he was appointed Adj. Professor in protein purification at the department of Chemical Engineering, Lund University, Sweden. Kouhei Tsumoto The University of Tokyo Tokyo, Japan Kouhei Tsumoto is Professor at the Department of Bioengineering at The University of Tokyo with a long record of scientific publications. Abstracts may only be submitted via Internet at the conference website www.hic-rpc.org For the preparation of your abstract, please refer to the guidelines on the conference website. Language Abstracts must be submitted in English. Presentation Format Accepted abstracts are to be presented either as poster or oral presentation. Scientific and technical presentations will be held from Monday afternoon, 2 pm, to Thursday noon, March 19, 2015. Poster presentations are scheduled for Wednesday evening. There will be an off-site event including dinner on Tuesday afternoon. excursion The excursion will take you to Valletta – the capital city of Malta. Valletta has many titles, all recalling its rich historical past: it is the “modern” city built by the Knights of St John; a masterpiece of the baroque; a European Art City and a UNESCO World Heritage City. After some time off for leisure in the city center the excursion continues to the medieval city of M’dina where the dinner will take place. 10 9 General Information (continued) Venue The 9th HIC/RPC Bioseparation Conference will be held in Sliema, Malta. The conference venue will be the Hotel Palace. Malta is the biggest Island of the Maltese Islands and lies in the center of the Mediterranean Sea. Temperatures usually begin to rise in Malta in March and during this month, the average temperature for the island is from 13°C in up to 15°C. The average sea temperature for Malta in March is 16°C. REACHING MALTA The island is a few hours’ flying time from most mainland European cities and has excellent intercontinental connections. Malta International Airport is located 10 km from Valletta and 10 km from Sliema. The national airline, Air Malta, operates flights to and from all the major airports in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. Getting Around The small size of the Maltese Islands makes getting around easy and hassle-free. There are various ways to get around in Malta. The public bus service is reliable and serves the major tourist areas. Ferries serve between Sliema and Valletta on a 30 minute schedule and taxi services offer fixed rates from Malta Airport to Sliema (see also below). Confirmation Upon receipt of the full registration fee, each participant will receive a confirmation of registration. Please present this confirmation at the registration desk as proof of your registration. Cancellation/Name Change Refund of fees, less 25% administrative charges, can be applied for in writing up to February 10, 2015. After this date no refund will be possible. For any change of names, a fee of € 20 will be charged. Responsibility The participant acknowledges that he/she has no right to lodge damage claims against the organizers should the holding of the conference be hindered or prevented by political events (such as acts of terrorism, danger of hostility, war etc.) or by unexpected economic events or generally by force majeure, or should the non-appearance of speakers or other reasons necessitate program changes.
