Panel Discussion: Latinos in Bloomington

What is the experience and significance of Latinos/Hispanics living in Bloomington? What it is like to live in
Bloomington through a Latino/Hispanic perspective? In Honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month The City of
Bloomington's Latino Programs and Outreach Division and Indiana University's Latino Cultural Center will
present a panel discussion on Latinos/Hispanics living in Bloomington. This event will include a panel of guests
whom all live in Bloomington and are of Latino/Hispanic descent. The audience will be encouraged to ask
questions, as the diverse panel talks about their experiences. Refreshments will be provided.

Artist Madelin Perez from Villa Clara, Cuba will be in Bloomington to create the CUBAmistad mural project, to be

Cuban Artist Madelin Perez Noa Noon-hour “Brown bag” Discussion
October 15; 12:00–1:00pm, Center for the Study of Global Change, 201 N Indiana Avenue, corner of 6th Street
Madelin Perez Noa is a Lyrical Surrealist Artist from Caibarien, Cuba, specializing in colorful paintings, textile art,
murals, and illustrations. Her paintings have been exhibited in Cuba, Canada, and the U.S. She has illustrated
both books of poetry and children's books. In addition to winning several important awards in Cuba, she also
founded her own community project, Por La Costa; it promotes the arts by recycling items that are washed up on
the town’s shores and creating a festival showcasing town arts. Her passion is not only creating whimsical fairytale stories in her paintings, but also teaching the visual arts to children within her community. This GSPS
discussion will touch on the local and global impact of art, and role of art in promoting social justice.
“Buying into the Regime: Grapes and Consumption in Cold War Chile and the United States”

Dr. Tinsman will be giving a lecture focusing on the relationship between Chile and the United States, with
respect to the grape industry that flourished during the Pinochet regime and the Americans who promoted it. This
transnational economic development was a terrain of political struggle and transformation on both sides of the
Equator.

Volunteering opportunity for Spanish-speaking students
Volunteers in Medicine, the local clinic that serves the uninsured, is seeing an influx of Hispanics using their
services and would like volunteers that are able to communicate and translate for them in the patient room. They
would need to be relatively fluent and able to work either 8am-12pm or 1-4pm on their assigned day. Those

2nd Annual Diversity Leadership Conference
The Office of the Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Multicultural Affairs is hosting the 2nd Annual Diversity
Leadership Conference on Saturday, November 1st, 2014 at the Indiana University Auditorium

address issues that impact various student communities. The conference consists of workshops, seminars, and
speakers to promote academic excellence, diversity education, personal empowerment, and leadership
development to accomplish its mission of developing student leaders. This year’s keynote speaker is Marc
Lamont Hill, PhD, Associate Professor of Education at Teachers College at Columbia University. The registration
deadline is Friday, October 24th. Please feel free to share this invitation with interested students, faculty, and
staff. You can also pick up DLC event postcards at the October Multicultural Outreach Work Group meeting. The
original deadline for the call for proposals was September 5th; however, proposals are still being accepted.
