Caring and Compassionate Services For Those In Need
Issue #10 - October, 2014
Reverence and Creativity
Seton Center assists nearly 250 eligible families during the seasons of Easter, Thanksgiving and
Christmas through the Helping Hands program to provide grocery store gift cards for holiday
meals and new toys for young children at Christmas. With the Daughters of Charity core values
of reverence and creativity in mind, Seton Center is prayerfully working to streamline and
dignify the delivery of this program. For Thanksgiving and Easter, each family will receive a
grocery store gift card for their holiday meal. It is our hope to provide them the freedom and
dignity to create a holiday meal that specifically matches their personal traditions.
Drives for and donations of non-perishable food are still most welcomed. These foods will be
made available to the families to supplement their meal and/or provide for their general on-going
food/household needs from our food pantry.
For the Christmas Helping Hands program, donations of presents will be accepted for children
aged infant through 13 years old. The donated items will be set-up in a store-like environment so
parents have the opportunity to choose what gifts their young children receive. Children aged 14
through adults will receive gift cards from Target or Wal-Mart. With these gift cards, our teen and
adult clients will have the opportunity to purchase gifts that truly fit their personal needs.
Thank you for your past sponsorships and donations to the Helping Hands programs and for your
prayerful support as we enter another year of providing the hope of a bountiful holiday to those
struggling to make ends meet.
If you have any questions or would like to be a 2014-15 Helping Hands sponsor, please contact
Administrative Assistant Tina Lamont at 301-447-6102, ext. 13 or [email protected].
Pa$$port to Wealth
The world of finance can be intimidating. We are grateful for a caring community, especially for
PNC Bank, Woodsboro Bank and the Maryland CASH (Creating Assets, Savings and Hope)
Campaign as they faithfully continue to partner with Seton Center by offering free and local
financial learning opportunities.
Seton Center clients in need of assistance for the holidays are required to attend at least one
financial seminar to receive sponsored gifts. These seminars are open to everyone in the
community as well: “Fraud Prevention” October 7th @ 6:30 PM at the Emmitsburg Library by
Woodsboro Bank; “Foundations of Money Management 1” November 3rd @ 1 PM at the
Emmitsburg Library by PNC Bank; and “Foundations of Money Management 2” November 10th
@ 1 PM at the Thurmont Library by PNC Bank. There’s no need to pre-register.

Meet Greg Sterner, II
Denise Sauvageau & Greg Sterner, II
Greg dropped out of high school after
his junior year. He fell into destructive
habits and made some poor decisions.
His life consisted of working, video
games and drugs. Greg was always a
hard worker, but found himself in need
of assistance to make ends meet. He
made the difficult choice to visit Seton
Center to ask for help. During his time
with Case Manager Denise Sauvageau,
Greg shared his desire to work toward
financial stability. When asked if he'd
be interested in participating in the
Thrift Shop Updates
MD CASH (Creating Assets, Savings
and Hope) Campaign’s
MyBudgetCoach™ program, Greg’s
answer was a resounding “YES!”.
Because Seton Center committed to
joining this program as a service
provider for one year, we were able to
provide trained staff and volunteers to
assist him in improving his ability to
budget, set and achieve goals, and
make well-informed financial
decisions.
When Greg accepted this invitation, he
committed to meeting monthly with a
volunteer Budget Coach for the period
of one year. In a few short months,
Greg has already completed three
Sessions, opened his first savings
account, been promoted twice at his
place of employment, begun working
on his GED, and is following up to
apply for his dream job as a
professional firefighter. These positive
steps forward don't end with Greg
either. His enthusiasm is contagious
New Faces
Creative Support
Seton Center supporter Kellie Putman, an
independent Thirty-One representative,
enlisted sponsors to provide eight Cinch Sac
Back2School bags and used her commission
to fill them with school supplies.
Thrift Shop Manager Kenneth
Droneburg (pictured here) is using his
retail experience, creativity and love for
people to enhance each person’s
experience when donating or purchasing
items by:

now accepting credit, debit and EBT
Cash cards. 

shopping bag for only $1.50.

accepting and selling small
pieces of furniture.

and he has encouraged his father to
work toward his own GED too. And,
after they reach their educational goals,
Greg’s mother plans to seek her
bachelor’s degree in the field of
graphic design.
Not so coincidentally, Greg’s volunteer
Budget Coach, Thurmont High School
retired teacher and sports coach Tom
Sherald, is also a certified tutor for the
Literacy Council of Frederick County.
Tom originally contacted Seton Center
to help tutor GED students, but also
joined our volunteer Budget Coach
team. Because of your support, Greg
and Tom may continue working
together to build Greg’s financial life
skills, GED readiness, confidence and
hope for a brighter future.
Christ’s Community Church named Seton
Center as the recipient of the 2014
Community Back To School Night’s dunk
tank proceeds. Dana and Pastor John Talcott
presented the check to Sister Joan Corcoran
and Sister Linda O'Rourke of Seton Center.
Many thanks to Kellie and the congregation
of Christ’s Community Church for these
creative uses of their resources to lift and
bless the families we serve!
We are also thankful to the incoming Mount
St. Mary's University freshmen students for
their help to restock the Thrift Shop shelves
following the August Bag Sale.
Pictures of Sister Joan Corcoran, Pastor &
Dana Talcott and Sister Linda O’Rourke,
Kellie Putman and the Mount students can be
seen in the top banner on the previous page.
Stay connected to Seton Center
We are pleased to welcome Kelly Mays &
Jonathan Moser as our newest staff
members. Jonathan began serving as a
Saturday Thrift Shop cashier in August. His
retail experience and outgoing personality
offer a quite pleasant customer experience.
Kelly joined Seton Center in early
September as a part-time case manager,
focusing on families or individuals in need
of more intense, one-on-one case
management, along with home visitations.
She brings social service education and
experience with her, along with her heart’s
yearning to help those in need. Thank you
Jonathan and Kelly, for coming on board to
serve with us!
Volunteer Hours/Value
